Students Will Travel To China For Physics Competition By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Students from three area schools have earned places on the United States team that will take part in the International Young Physicists Tournament (IYPT) in Beijing, China, on Thursday, July 19, through Wednesday, July 25. Katherine Baker of Coatesville Area Senior High School (CASH), Eric Beery and Anthony Mazur of Phoenixville Area High School (PAHS), and Jarod Dagney and Ben Mellema of Octorara Area High School (OAHS), along with two alternates, Willetta Wisely from PAHS and Kyle Quinn from OAHS, were chosen for the local team at a selection competition at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) in March. On April 14, the five team members and two alternates traveled to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for the regional competition, where
they defeated a team from Princeton Regional Institute of Science and Math, a New Jersey STEM high school, to earn the right to represent the United States in the international competition. The students began to prepare for the regional competition when they started the school year last fall. They were presented with 17 physics problems that do not have readily available answers. Working in clubs after school and in their free time, they researched the problems and came up with solutions and presentations. Each school has a teacher involved in its club to help the students with their research and to prepare them for competition. Assisting teachers are William McWatters, OAHS; David Fenimore, CASH; and Jay Jennings, PAHS. Thirty-five teams will compete in the IYPT, where the five local students hope to be among the top 15 finishers. See Physics Competition pg 7

Within a few minutes, the film can will launch, sending its contents through the air like a rocket ship. The film can experiment was just one activity that children enjoyed while taking part in Science in the Summer at the Coatesville Public Library. The theme of this year’s session was “The Science of Space.” Joe Korzec, a science teacher in the Rose Tree Media School District, was the program’s instructor. “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction,” Korzec told the students See Summer Course pg 8

When Patrick Welch moved to Chester County 14 years ago, he discovered Glen Moore United Methodist Church (GUMC), located on Route 282 near Wallace Township Community Park, during a walk around his neighborhood. Little did he know at that time that he would one day be appointed as the church’s pastor. Welch officially became pastor on July 1 during a special installation service that took place prior to the Sunday worship service. Welch succeeds pastor Ralph Cain, who retired after spending 10 years serving at GUMC. Food Donations from pg 1 With students home from school for the summer, even more nonperishable goods and toiletries are needed to fill the Community Food Boxes that have been installed throughout the community by It Takes a Village, a nonprofit organization that was founded in the spring of 2017. The boxes are located along Business Route 30 between Downingtown and Coatesville. A plaque is posted on each box that reads, in part, “Take only what you need, leave behind what you can, be the village for your neighbor.” In order to keep the program going, a core group of volunteers, called Box Buddies, keeps the containers restocked. The public may also contribute to the effort
by donating items such as pasta, boxed macaroni and cheese, beef jerky, tuna and chicken salad kits, canned vegetables, peanut butter and jelly, as well as personal care items such as soap and shampoo, hand lotion, tissues and diapers. Donations of pet food will also be accepted. Items that should not be placed in the boxes include clothing and shoes, homecooked items, items not in their original sealed packaging, razors, hand sanitizer, mouthwash, frozen food and blankets and bedding. Those interested in participating in the effort may join the private Facebook group of It Takes a Village at www
.facebook.com/groups/ittakesavillagecc. Those who visit the page can see daily updates of which boxes are especially in need of donated items. People are also welcome to post photos of the boxes that they fill. The boxes can be found at the following locations: Pocket Park in Downingtown, 141 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, near the Lord’s Pantry, accessible in the outdoor plaza from Lancaster Avenue or Mill Alley; Downingtown Train Station, located on the westbound or Lancaster Avenue/Route 30 side of the station; Dawkins Park, located next to the Coatesville High School campus on Pennsylvania
Avenue between North Caln Road and Veterans Drive; Abdala Park, located between Ninth and 10th avenues on the south side of Business Route 30 next to Walgreens in Coatesville; and Ash Park, located between Kersey and Walnut streets, Coatesville. For more information, readers may visit www.ittakesavillagecc.org/food-boxes. The Beta Omicron Chapter of Alpha Alpha State, Delta Kappa Gamma International for Key Women Educators, met recently at the Thorndale Inn to install new officers and honor selected chapter members. New officers for 2018-20 include Mindy Patton, president; Maryann Schwab, first vice president; Linda Irwin, second vice president; Marie Lentz, recording secretary; and Danielle Melesky, corresponding secretary. Also recognized during the meeting was Amy Buddock, who has led the presidency of the chapter for the last four years. Alice Bryant, a charter member of the chapter, commended Beta Omicron for its continued work in maintaining the goals and services established when the chapter was formed in 1975. Additionally, charter member Ella Zinzarella was recognized for contributions in establishing ongoing support of Samara House. Operated by the Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA) in Coatesville, Samara House is a long-term residential treatment program for women with substance abuse issues and their young children. Zinzarella was able to deliver countless supplies and gifts to residents of the Coatesville facility in partnership with the
Beta Omicron members. Because Zinzarella was not present at the meeting, Beta Omicron members, including Mary Ann Giancola, Alida Menefee, Patton and Schwab, visited her at Brandywine Hall in West Chester and presented her a plaque that was created in her honor. The plaque reads, in part, “Since 1992, (Zinzarella’s) dedication and guidance has influenced Beta Omicron’s support for the women of Samara House. In addition, a print titled “The Marketplace by Paoli artist Maria de los A. Morales will be permanently displayed alongside the plaque at Samara House. The Beta Omicron Chapter of Alpha Alpha State, Delta Kappa Gamma, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015, serves women educators in Chester County. The local chapter is comprised of members from the Coatesville, Downingtown and West Chester areas and annually supports scholarships, libraries and youth-related agencies.

Physics Competition from pg 1
introduced himself to the GUMC congregation by relating the story of his first encounter with the church. “Fourteen years ago, my family and I moved right on the other side of Wagenseller Park. We (took a walk) and saw this beautiful church on my first night in Pennsylvania (and) I took pictures of it,” he recalled. He said that he spent his early years in business working for an escalator and elevator company. “All of the time, God kept calling me and I tried not to be a minister most of my life,” he said. “I ended up (attending) Hopewell (UMC) in Downingtown. I wanted to get more involved in the church, and I asked the pastor what I could do. He told me that he wanted me to do prison ministry.” That event prompted Welch’s work as a prison minister, which he has been doing for 11 years. “I go into the jail in Philadelphia preaching and sharing Communion,” he said. In time, Welch left his career and decided to enter into professional ministry, receiving his Master of Divinity at Palmer Theological Seminary. During the installation service at GUMC, Welch was presented various gifts from congregation members, including the following: a new Bible from Henry Foehl; a cross from Don Graewe; bread and a cup to signify Communion from Marta Wierick; “United Methodist Church Book of Discipline” from Joni Thor; water for baptism from Gene Huffman; a globe, signifying missions, from
The team members all have a knowledge of each of the 17 problems, but each of them has specialized in two or three specific problems. Since the team was selected, the students have continued to work alone and together to prepare for the IYPT. The problems represent a wide range of physics topics. Ben took on the acoustic levitation problem, and with the help of other OAHS Physics Club members, created a working model that can keep very small, lightweight foam balls hovering in mid-air by the use of sound waves. Because the competition is being held in China, the team members are unable to take the equipment they have built to the IYPT with them. Instead, they will be prepared with data, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. For the IYPT competition, a team will present its findings on one of the problems to a panel of judges and two other teams. One of those teams will dispute that solution, and the other will review how well the solution and the dispute were presented, commenting on each. All three teams will be scored on their work.
Shawn Trego; a hymnal from Barbara Carter; a white robe from Becky Pendlebury; and a clergy collar from Bill Pendlebury. Welch donned the robe and collar following the presentation. Welch credited Cain for his smooth transition into his new role as pastor. “Every United Methodist Church will either reappoint their pastor or appoint a new pastor every year. It’s a one-year covenant,” Welch said. “I am thankful that (Pastor Ralph) lived about 3 miles from my old church (at Friendship UMC). I would see him … and we got to know each other. He was incredibly gracious (in the transition).” Welch said he will also be spending time getting to know congregation members, as well as members of the community by visiting the neighborhood. “I walked around, visited the deli and walked in the park and (enjoyed) being able to say, ‘Hi, I’m the new guy,” he said. “I’m still learning.” Following the service, the congregation enjoyed cake, coffee and other refreshments during a reception to welcome the new pastor. GUMC, located at 1920 Creek Road, Glenmoore, holds its Sunday service at 10 a.m. Sunday school for adults and children is offered at 9 a.m. For more information, readers may call the church office at 610-942-2324, email glenmooreum@verizon.net or visit www.glen mooreumc.org. More information is also available by searching for “Glen Moore United Methodist Church” on Facebook.
“It forces you to find a way to articulate your thoughts to someone who has no idea what you’re talking about. I don’t think you get that experience anywhere else, especially in a traditional school setting,” Eric said. “One of the most important parts is the mathematical theory, so you have to come up with the mathematical models to demonstrate how the phenomenon occurs. There’s experimentation and there’s math theory, and you have to get all of those into the presentation, so it makes sense.” The international tournament has been held annually since 1988. A grant and funding from the school districts are helping to fund the team’s trip to China. Although there will be teams from throughout the world, the competition will be held in English. To learn more about the event, readers may visit www.iypt.org. All students on the team are recent graduates of their respective high schools. They all plan to continue their education in the fall: Jarod at the University of Delaware, Ben at Drexel University, Katherine at Ursinus College, Eric at Haverford College, and Anthony at Rochester Institute of Technology.

In addition, players in vintage base ball do not wear gloves and only one baseball is used during the entire game. The Brandywine BBC, which formed in 2013, competes with other vintage clubs in the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League. The team has grown in size and skill since its formation. “We have received many compliments from our opponents who are impressed with our improvement and our large roster,” reported team player Rick Stratton, noting that the club has six wins and eight losses to date. “We have a handful of new ballists this year, which has been really helpful when others are not available to play because of vacation, injury or other commitments.” Like other teams that play outdoor sports, players have been subjected to intense heat during their past several outings. “We (recently) played a doubleheader in 95-degree heat,” Stratton noted. “Luckily, the pace was fast, and
we were able to finish both matches before 2:30 p.m.” All home matches are played at East Goshen Park, and games take place in an open grassy area in the park. Canvas bags or sacks filled with rubber chips are used as bases. Following the doubleheader, the team will compete in the Gettysburg Vintage Base Ball Festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. “We are getting very excited for the upcoming Vintage Base Ball Festival in Gettysburg,” Stratton stated. “We will be playing the Cincinnati Red Stockings - one of the most storied clubs in the country, dating back to 1869.” The next home game for the Brandywine BBC will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. against the Liberty Base Ball Club of New Brunswick, N.J. A complete list of games is available at www.brandywinebbc. org/schedule. For more information about the team, readers may email brandywinebbc @gmail.com or visit www.brandywine bbc.org or www.facebook.com/Brandy wineBBC.

The video depicted the space shuttle, manned by six astronauts, going to the International Space Station, traveling at speeds in excess of 17,000 miles per hour.
when describing the principle behind the film canister rocket launch. “When I put the lid on, it formed an airtight seal. The fuel is a little bit of water. The pressure builds up as it bubbles, and it (produces) a gas called carbon dioxide, which is the same gas we exhale. The action is the canister being placed down, and the reaction was the canister flying up.” To further illustrate the principle, Korzec displayed a miniature fan boat, the kind that is used by people who travel through the Everglades in Florida. “They can’t put boats in the swamp

EPC Golf Outing Supports Good Samaritan Services
Jeremy Engle (far left) and Jocelyn Engle (far right), representing Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), recently presented a donation representing the proceeds of EPC’s 2018 fundraising golf outing to Nate Hoffer (second from left), chief executive officer for Good Samaritan Services, and Ashley Eager (second from right), development coordinator for Good Samaritan Services. The golf outing, which took place on June 8, raised more than $22,600 to benefit Bridge of Hope at Good Samaritan Services, whose mission is to provide housing and supportive services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. EPC’s golf outing has raised a total of $135,000 in 10 years. For photos and more information about the 2018 golf outing, as well as information about the 2019 event, which is slated for Friday, June 14, readers may visit http://epcgolfouting.com. Individuals who are interested in golfing or volunteering at the 2019 event may email jrengle@engleonline.com. “You need a lot of thrust to overcome the drag of gravity,” Korzec explained. Atlantis had its maiden voyage in 1985 and was involved in subsequent trips through 2011. “Before the space shuttle, the rockets that we sent up basically were destroyed as they came back down, and all we were able to save was a piece of the top,” said Korzec. “The space shuttle looked like a rocket but flew like a glider. It allowed us to save the aircraft to use over and over again.” During the Science in the Summer program, held from June 25 through 28 at the Coatesville Public Library, students also explored topics such as the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human

survival in space and how rockets overcome Earth’s gravity. Science in the Summer was founded by a national pharmaceutical company in 1986 and is held in conjunction with local libraries. The Franklin Institute became a partner and administrator of the program in 2012. The experiment-oriented courses are offered to classes of 16 students in two age groups - children entering second and third grades (Level I) and children entering fourth through sixth grades (Level II).
