“Some people come early and have dinner and there is a business meeting at 7 p.m., which is required by our charter,” Noonan explained. “We have a treasurer’s report and a report from an EPSC representative, and we go over upcoming activities. Sometimes there are fun events or a speaker, who will talk about biking or exercises for skiing, or (there will be) bingo. At Christmastime, there is a gift exchange.”Members are invited to propose other outings and trip destinations. “We have people with broad interests,” said Noonan. “That has led to the things that we do when we branched out from skiing.”
Upcoming outings planned by the club include full moon kayaking at Marsh Creek State Park on Saturday, Sept. 10, and a horseback ride on Sunday, Oct. 23, at a location to be determined. Ski outings planned for 2023 include trips to Banff, Alberta, Canada; Niseko, Japan; Greek Peak Mountain Resort in New York; and Killing ton,BVSAVt.
“There will be a presentation from the pres ident, who will give a history of the club, and the activities chairman will give us an idea of the things that we do,” said Tim Noonan, a member of the activities committee. “There will also be a slideshow of past events.”
New members will also learn about the club’s affilia tion with the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council (EPSC). “BVSA is just one chapter of the broader Eastern Penn sylvania Ski Council, which includes 39 clubs through out Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland,” Noonan said. The open house will also include drawings for free memberships for new members only and a display of photos of past events and trips.
members are asked to pay an annual fee, with separate prices for couples, families and individuals. In addition to a monthly newsletter that lists club activ ities, members receive reciprocal membership to the EPSC and the National Ski Council.

The Pennsylvania De partment of Transporta tion (PennDOT) reminds motorists to drive safely in work zones. Drivers are reminded to slow down and never drive distracted, especially in work zones where roadway conditions can change every day. In Pennsylvania, there are two distinct programs related to active work zones. Under Title 75, Section 3326, motorists caught by police driving 11 mph or more above the posted speed limit in an active work zone, or who are involved in a crash in an active work zone and are convicted for failing to drive at a safe speed, auto matically lose their license for 15 days. Additionally, fines for certain traffic vio lations, including speeding, driving under the influence, and failure to obey traffic devices, are doubled for active work zones. The law also provides for up to five years of additional jail time for individuals convicted of homicide by vehicle for a crash that occurred in an active work zone. Under Title 75, Section 3369, fines are allowed to be administered through the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program. Penn sylvania’s AWZSE program, first implemented in March 2020, uses vehicle-mount ed systems to detect and record motorists exceed ing posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more using electronic speed timing devices. AWZSE systems are only operational in active work zones where workers are present.
BY FRANCINE FULTON “They are the three smallest bones in the human body but also the most important,” said Yaduraj Choudhary, when describ ing how the name of the nonprofit organization 3 Tiny Bones was chosen to represent the three bones found in the middle ear. Yaduraj, a 12th-grader at the Downingtown STEM Academy, was born with hearing loss and currently wears a hearing aid. He is the founder and president of 3 Tiny Bones, a student-led group. “Our goal is to educate communi ties on hearing loss to destigma tize it and create a more inclusive society,” he stated. Since its founding two and a half years ago, the group has institut ed several programs. “We have been working with the Downing town STEM Academy on educating students about hearing loss and healthy hearing habits,” said Yadu raj. “We have also educated the student body through posters in the hallway, as well as videos cre ated by our team that were broad casted to the entire school.” The school has also initiated the first Safe Hearing Zone. “We did a test run at STEM this past school year. We launched a Safe Hearing Zone at the prom and homecoming dances to make sure the music volume was safe so that the hearing health of all students and faculty in atten dance was protected,” Yaduraj explained.Yaduraj also hopes that peo ple will take the “HEAR Pledge” which stands for Hear safely, wear Earplugs, stay Away from loud noise and Recognize harm ful sounds. “This is one of our main initiatives right now, and our goal is 10,000 pledges by 2023,” he said. To take the pledge or for more information, visit www.3tinybones.org/pledge.Yadurajandotherstudent mem bers of the organization also take part in the Walk4Hearing in Phil adelphia presented by the Hear ing Loss Association of America, where they distribute hundreds of pairs of earplugs to promote hear ingAllsafety.theefforts, said Yaduraj, stem from his first-hand experience of hearing loss. “I went through a lot of challenges in my hearing loss journey. I had to undergo four sur geries when I was in elementary school. That led to many missed months of school,” he shared. “I was able to push through it and persevere and study hard.” He said that youths who wear hearing aids may face teasing from other students. “When I start ed wearing a hearing aid, especially in middle school I faced a lot of bul lying and teasing,” stated Yaduraj. “If you walk in wearing glasses, no one asks if you are blind. But if you wear a hearing aid, (people ask), “Are you deaf?”or ‘What’s on your ear?’ There is stigma for people with hearing loss (due to) a lack of education.”Healsohopes to educate young people about taking proper care of their hearing. For example, he not ed, many youths wear earbuds or headphones that are turned up too loudly. “These are kids with perfect hearing who are doing permanent damage because we have noise hazards - earbuds, headphones, lawn mowers, vehicles and parties (with loud music),” Yaduraj stated. “It is important for them to protect their hearing health.”

The Buddy Boxes are among sever al initiatives planned for next school year that will address food insecurity within the district. In the fall, students will decorate the boxes as part of these ongoing efforts.

Several recommendations are provided on how to prepare meals as a family.
Adults should expect some mess. Parents and other adults should go into any meal creation process with children expecting things to get a tad messy. It may be possible to minimize messes by setting up workstations covered by plastic tablecloths, which can be folded up and shaken into the trash. Encourage children to sit down so they do not inadvertently spread any messes to another part of the house.
Families that want to spend more time together can find a fun way to do just that by working together on some thing they already do each day. Cooking meals together as a family can add some fun to a task that is already a part of many families’ daily routines.
Parents should plan for things to take a little extra time. Preparation time is likely to take a bit longer when multiple hands are stirring the pot. Families can slow down and employ some patience. Adults should resist the urge to take over when children may not be doing things the right way. If meals need to be on the table at certain times, start an hour or two earlier than normal to account for some delays. When cooking as a family, eliminate as many distrac tions as possible. The kitchen may be the heart of the home, but it can be dangerous to be around knives and other cooking utensils and instruments. Distractions like televisions or phones can draw attention away and po tentially lead to injuries from pots boiling over or children getting too close to hot flames. Cooking as a family is very beneficial and can be made even more so by following some handy tips.
Tips For Cooking Meals As A Family
“Live United In AnnouncedMusic”
Parents should organize age-appropriate tasks. Little hands can only handle so much. A toddler can pour and stir ingredients, while an older child or teenager may be ready to chop ingredients or sauté at the stove.
Children can learn quite a bit from cooking, as preparing recipes can reinforce school lessons. Family cooking nights also pose a great opportunity to create lasting memories.
In addition to creating lasting, fun memories, cook ing together as a family may make children less likely to complain about foods since they have lent a hand in their creation. Furthermore, cooking together may foster a special feeling of unity and may establish a no-pressure, safe space for conversation.
United Way of Chester County will hold its annual Live United in Music event on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Penn Oaks Golf Club, 150 Penn Oaks Drive, West Chester. The event will feature national recording artist Alexandra Kay. Country Western attire is encouraged. Tickets per person include a reception, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and the performance. Proceeds will benefit the United Way of Chester County’s Community Impact & Innovation Fund. Limited corporate sponsorships are available. To purchase tickets and learn more about sponsorship opportunities, visit www.liveunitedinmusic.com or call 610-429-9400.
Cooking can be made into a multigenerational experi ence. Consider hosting weekly or monthly family meals where everyone gets to take part in bringing the meal to the table. This is an ideal opportunity for grandparents to pass down family recipes and regale grandchildren with funny stories and memories.
It is a good idea to begin with simple recipes. An initial foray into family cooking should involve a recipe that is easy to prepare and perhaps does not require too many ingredients. Families can build on each success after that, growing bolder with each subsequent recipe.
LCC exists to prepare business leaders to guide non profit organizations as board members. Participants explore complex social and community issues, devel op leadership potential, build professional relationships, and connect with local nonprofit organizations, posi tioning them to lead and network in the community.

At certain times when the day is strictly devoted to writing feature stories for the newspaper, I can go up to eight hours without talking to a single person. These are the days when I actually hope that the phone rings so I can engage a telemarketer or talk to the car warranty guy. I am even tempted to answer the phone when it says “Scam Likely” just to see what the person has to say. Being at home also has its temptations. Not only can you snack all day if you choose, but there are great morning news shows and plenty of afternoon TV to enjoy as well. For those of us who have deadlines and work that must get done, however, there is not much room for Personally, slacking.Iwork on a reward system. For every task I complete, I treat my self to something like a vanilla ice cream cone or a mug of hot tea enjoyed on the front porch. Most often, however, it is a walk down the street with my dogs. It takes a lot of self-dis cipline to work at home, and I believe this method is effective.Ioften think of my first office job out of college. We were required to work eight hours a day, but that could be any shift that we want ed. Most of us chose the traditional 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift, but our office man ager worked from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. So, every morning for about an hour, we all brought our office chairs to the front lobby and formed a circle while we drank cof fee or tea and ate dough nuts that someone had brought in or homemade baked goods. We called it the Breakfast Club. We talked and laughed. Topics of discussion ranged from current events to our personal lives. I keep in touch with several mem bers of the Breakfast Club, and even though many of them are scattered through out the country, none of us will ever forget that time of sharing. So,for those who are lucky enough to work from home, get to know your co-workers. Accept their flaws and embrace their quirks and eccentricities and just enjoy spending time with them. And now that I have fin ished my monthly column, I will go have that vanilla ice cream cone and maybe even follow it with a cup of hot tea, which I can drink on the front porch. And, if I can wake them up, I will take my dogs on a nice long walk.

Leadership Chester County (LCC), a professional devel opment program, is currently accepting applications for its 2022-23 class. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 30.
BY FRANCINE FULTON
I am hard pressed to find any negatives about work ing at home. I can think of only one drawback - social isolation. Those of us who work at home miss inter acting with our co-workers, sharing lunch or a coffee break with them.
Leadership Program
People who find spotted lanternflies on their proper ty can reduce the population and the insect’s impact by trapping and squishing them. One option is to cre ate a circle trap.
Lanternfly Circle Trap Instructions
Graduates seek to gain business, leadership, and en trepreneurial skills; a broadened understanding of the local socioeconomic landscape; and new perspectives in management, planning, and strategic thinking.
The LCC program is administered and facilitated by United Way of Chester County with guidance from its partners, West Chester University, and Chester County Chamber of Business & Industry. To learn more, visit www.leadershipchestercounty.org or call 610-429-9400.
At the onset of the pan demic, some companies had their employees work remotely. After the initial shock and a period of ad justment, many people began to realize what a privilege it can be to work atWorkinghome. at home means not having to dress up ev ery day to go to an office or other workplace, which means fewer trips to the dry cleaner and more wearing of pajamas, bath robes and comfy pants. It means not having to fight traffic or worry about road conditions during win ter or summer storms. Most importantly, being at home allows pet owners to enjoy even more time with their cats or dogs, although they mostly sleep all day anyway.
