Chester County To PresentColor Run/Walk

The sixth annual Chester County Color 5K run/walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s event, the sixth annual, will be held on the Chester Valley Trail and will start and end in Exton Park, 122 Church Farm Lane, Exton. This is a new venue this year; previously, the fundraiser took place at Everhart Park in West Chester.

The timed 5K is open to both runners and walkers. On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the race start at 9 a.m. Medals will be given out for the first-, second- and third-place finishers in various age categories.

Participants will be doused in different-colored powder at the start of the race and along the course. “At different points throughout the race course, there are color stations and people will be doused in color as they run past,” explained Rebecca Brain, Chester County public information officer. “It’s cornstarch and completely biodegradable, and it washes out.”

There will be an option for runners and walkers who choose not to participate in the color aspect of the event. “Runners who don’t want to interact with the color can take a route around the color stations that allows them not to be sprayed with powder,” noted Brain.

Participants will travel along the Chester Valley Trail through Exton Park and the neighboring corporate

center. “It’s a two-lap course, and those who are walking can just walk one lap if they prefer,” Brain pointed out. “We will have the fire police out there to control traffic.”Thepresenting sponsor for the 2022 Chester County Color 5K is the John R. Gailey III and JoEllen Berger Charitable Fund. Funds generated through this year’s Color 5K will support Chester County’s Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program.

Through the COPE program, overdose survivors who are being treated in emergency rooms at any hospital in Chester County can meet with a certified

Participants will be doused with colored powder along the race course.

Events Planned To Celebrate Leif Ericson Day

Members of Leif Ericson Viking Ship Inc. (LEVS) invite the com munity to commemorate Leif Ericson Day with a banquet and the sailing of the Norseman, a 40foot Viking ship replica, on Marsh Creek Lake on Sunday, Oct. 9.

LEVS membership chairman Hildegard Lind strom explained that in 1964, the U.S. Congress, by joint resolution, de clared Oct. 9 as Leif Eric son Day; the sail is always held on or near that date.

The first segment of the celebration will begin with the launching of the ship at 11 a.m. by cos tumed Viking re-enactors from the western launch area of Marsh Creek Lake. The GPS address for the location is 800 N. Reeds Road, Downing town. Visitors will be invit ed to take a closer look at the Norseman in the water and talk with the crew.At

noon, there will be introductions of honored guests, as well as the reading of a proclama tion from the president of the United States and the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, a wreath will be dedicated in honor of the life and accomplish ments of Leif Ericson. The Norseman will then sail until about 2:30 p.m. Later in the day, the annual Leif Ericson Day

banquet will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 720 E. Eagleview Blvd., Exton. In addition to dinner and a time for socializing, the event will feature guest speakers, a display of Viking artifacts and a silent auction. Attendees also will learn more about theTicketsNorseman.willbe

required for the ban quet; the reservation deadline is Mon day, Oct. 3. Those interested in attend ing the dinner are asked to contact Lindstrom at proudvikinglady@msn.

com.LEVS, a Chester County-based non profit, is a living history educational organization that was formed to ed ucate people about the Viking people and Leif Ericson, the first European

known to have discovered and settled on the North American continent. On the day of the sail, the group will have souvenir T-shirts that say, “Leif Land ed First,” along with books and other merchandise.Crewmembers

sail the ship on Marsh Creek Lake each year, and they also make appearances at various festivals and events. “We took part in the Kennett Square Memorial Day parade, and in July, we sailed on Lake Chautauqua during the Scandinavian Folk Festival at Jamestown Commu nity College in Jamestown, N.Y,” said Lindstrom. “In August, we went to a Swedish Festival in Mount Jewett in western Pennsylvania. For Labor Day weekend, we were at Scandinavian Fest in northern New Jersey.”

LEVS members, dressed in authentic Vi king-style clothing, also bring the ship to local elementary schools and present educational programs. This fall, the group has plans to visit West Bradford, Brandy wine Wallace, Springton Manor and Lionville elementary schools in the Downingtown Area School District.

LEVS is seeking peo ple to join the group and help to maintain the ship. For more informa tion, visit downpourshine,Lakeeventcontactcom/LEVS.Norsemanwww.facebook.orLindstrom.TheatMarshCreekwillbeheldrainorunlessthereisaorhighwinds.

AHG: A Christian Alternative To Girl Scouting

American Heritage Girls (AHG) was started in 1995 by a group of parents living in Ohio who want ed to offer a faithbased alternative to Girl Scouting. AHG troop mem bers enjoy all of the same types of programs and ac tivities, including camping, earning badges and com pleting community service projects.Locally, two AHG troops have formed: Troop 1031, which meets at Forks of the Brandywine Evangel ical Presbyterian Church in Glenmoore, and Troop 1234, which is chartered by St. Norbert Parish in Paoli.

Serena Farace of Down ingtown, age 14, who is a member of Troop 1234, explained that the troop is open to girls of all denom inations. “American Heri tage Girls now has troops in all 50 states,” she noted.

“There are many different faith denominations within the group, but we all wor ship one God.”

Troops are divided by program level into the following units: Pathfind er, ages 5 and 6; Tender Hearts, ages 6 to 9; Explor ers, ages 9 to 12; Pioneers, ages 12 to 14; and Patriots, ages 14 to 18.

“Older girls have the abil ity to hold leadership po sitions and to be mentors to the younger girls,” said Serena, who is a mem ber of Patriot group. “At the Patriot level, girls can decide to earn the Stars

and Stripes Award, which colleges recognize as a big accomplishment.” Like the Girl Scout Gold Award, the Stars and Strips Award requires the planning and completion of a communi ty service Serena’sproject.troop has camped at French Creek State Park in Elverson, and it took part in a multi-troop outing at Frances Slocum State Park in Wyoming, which is located in north eastern Pennsylvania. Ev ery April, there is also a multi-troop camping event at Innabah Camp and Re treat Center in Spring City.

“We do a lot of fun activi ties, many of which I would never have taken part in if I wasn’t a part of AHG,” Serena shared. “There are certain requirements we have to fulfill in order to earn badges and patches, and those requirements push me to go beyond my comfort zone. For instance, I have never gone camping in my life, but so far, I have gone on two camping trips, both for two nights each. I would never have thought I could do that, but I per severed and learned a lot about myself after the experience.”Serena’smother, There sa, said that a friend rec ommended the AHG pro gram when the Faraces were looking for an activity similar to Scouting. “We wanted a troopnot“It’sorganization,”Christian-basedshesaid.foralldenominations,justCatholic,and(thehas)girlsinprivate

Compeer: “Mental Wellness Starts With Friendship”

An important aspect of Compeer Chester Coun ty, a nonprofit organi zation that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the com munity, is social interac tion. Not only do pairs enjoy activities on their own, but the organization also holds community get-togethers.Mostrecently, Com peer presented its annual summer picnic at the Al bert C. Miller Park in Ex ton. More than 30 people attended, enjoying box lunches, socializing and games, including corn hole. Some attendees also took walks around the park. Members of the Compeer advisory coun cil helped with welcom ing people, handing out lunches and supervising theAccordinggames.

to Sherry Thompsen, Compeer out reach coordinator, one at tendee described the pic nic as “the best day I’ve had in a long time.”

Prior to the summer outing, the Compeer Bowling and Pizza Par ty was held in March at The Palace Bowling &

Entertainment Center in Downingtown, the orga nization’s first in-person event since before the pandemic.Thompsen

also an nounced that the inter national Compeer orga nization has adopted a new logo, which depicts the “O” in Compeer as heart-shaped and a new tagline, “Mental Wellness Starts With Friendship.” “Compeer Internation al asked all affiliates to start using this new logo. It provides a con sistent look for Compeer

programs, regardless of location,” she noted.

As part of the program, Compeer volunteers are paired with individuals of the same gender and geographical area who share common inter ests. Pairs share activi ties such as attending a sporting event or a mov ie or going for coffee or lunch. Individuals in the program have been di agnosed with conditions such as depression, so cial anxiety and post-trau matic stress disorder, and they are referred to the

program by a mental healthCompeerprofessional.isalways in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “We are in special need of older male volunteers age 55-plus,” Thompsen noted. The Compeer program would like to remind indi viduals that people in the U.S. can call or text 988 if they are experiencing a suicidal, substance use and/or mental health crisis. This new number, modeled after 911, went live on July 17. It offers 24/7 access to trained counselors who can talk with the callers and also direct them to addition al resources for mental health and substance use issues. “If someone is concerned about a friend or family member, they can use that number as well.” Thompsen noted.

Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partner ships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & De velopmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.Formore information, including volunteer op portunities, contact Don na Kueny, program direc tor, at 610-436-4445

How’s Your News?

Recently, I was on as signment covering an event for the paper, and I bumped into a young reporter from another newspaper who looked to be a recent college graduate.During the event and subsequent interviews, she only used one piece of equipment - her cell phone. She not only took photos with it, but she also used a voice record er

I,app.onthe other hand, al ways attend events with a fully loaded camera bag. I use my cellphone to take photos, but I also use a digital camera just in case. I also use a re corder, but I take notes as well in my reporter’s notebook. I believe it is important to always have a backup plan.

Also in my bag are spare batteries and extra pens, as well as business cards to give out. I make sure that I always keep a spare pair of reading glasses in my bag, which I’m sure the young re porter won’t need for a good many years.

I wanted to give her some advice about only relying on a phone. What if it gets lost or stolen or she drops it and it gets run over by a car? I guess I am just old school.

Not only do our styles differ, but so do the types of publications that we write for. Chester County townlively (formerly the Community Courier) is solely committed to in forming the public about positive people in the community and sharing information about local events that can be en joyed by the whole fam ily. We highlight service organizations, school students, historical so cieties and businesses, and most importantly, we shine a spotlight on ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

Through my job I have met a few celebrities over the years, including professional athletes. And while it is excit ing to meet someone who excels on the play ing field, it is equally or perhaps more gratify

ing to meet everyday heroes. For instance, there are local families that have lost a child but have turned that grief into something positive by forming foundations or awarding scholar ships to students in the names of their lost children.Local community members have installed Little Free Libraries, where people can take books home to read and then return them if they wish. Similarly, vol unteers have set up lit tle food pantries where people in need can ac cess free food.

I have met people who have overcome difficulties, like cancer survivors who now use what they have learned to help others facing similar situations. And there are those whose primary goal is to serve

others as volunteers.

Those whom I re member fondly include a wheelchair user who was able to develop his upper body strength enough to become a championship archer. I met a little girl whose parents adopted her from Russia at the age of 2, and her favorite TV program was “The Law rence Welk Show.” And then there was a vol unteer from a pet res cue who stayed up all night to feed two new born kittens that were abandoned by their mother.Mywish

for that young reporter is that she will have a career like mine where she will meet amazing and unforgetta ble people. And hopefully in time, she will not rely solely on her cellphone while on assignment. Be cause, after all, everyone needs a backup plan just in case.
