Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), formerly known as Chester County Wom en’s Services, a nonprofit pregnancy care medical center, will present its annual 5K Run/Walk For Life on Saturday, Nov. 12, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville.

The event will begin at 9 a.m., followed by awards and prizes for best times per age group for those running the 5K. New this year will be a category for children running the 5K. “We will have trophies for the top boy and girl winner for the kids age 13 and under,” noted Nicole Crist, CCCC development director.

There will be separate registration fees for adults, teens ages 13 to 17 and children age 12 and under. All registered participants will get a bib and an event T-shirt.

This is the second year that the event is being held at Hibernia Park. “Last year, we had 385 participants. It was very suc cessful,” said Crist.

Crist explained that the 5K course makes a figure eight in the park. The run ners will set off first, followed by the walk ers. Families with children in strollers are welcome. However, jogging strollers are recommended because there is a portion of the course that is not paved and goes through a field.

The event will include an opening ceremony. “We have a pastor, and our vice president, Amy Cudd, will talk about our mission and where the funds are going,” Crist said. A DJ will provide music throughout the event to encourage the participants.

Also participating in the 5K walk will be Myriam Ruager, CCCC executive director. “Myriam pushes an empty stroller to hon or the unborn and the (babies) that have been lost,” said Crist. “It is really powerful.”

musings

While many people have a goal of achieving happi ness, the rest of us have a less lofty but equally sat isfying goal: a good mood.

Being in a good mood is a reflection of how life is going. If you are not feel ing any aches or pains and if your stress level is low, that will generally equate to a good mood. Con versely, when the com puter is freezing up, when your cellphone drops an important call, your “trick” knee is bothering you and work deadlines are loom ing, it can lead to being in a bad mood.

There are several trig gers that affect a person’s mood. One is sleep. A good night’s sleep and waking up feeling refreshed can kick off a good mood that will last throughout the day. Junk sleep, as the mattress manufacturers like to call it, makes us irritable. A good night’s sleep can be interrupted by thoughts that worry us or, more concretely, dogs that want to go outside at 6 a.m., even on week ends. And for mothers, es pecially new moms, there is no such thing as unin terrupted sleep, as they constantly check on their little ones.

A good mood can be ru ined by the common cold or other minor but irritat ing sicknesses. There is a feeling that you get when you know you are get ting a cold - the scratchy cough, the sore throat and the sniffles. You know it’s coming and there is really nothing that can be done. No amount of orange juice and cough drops can cure the inevitable misery.

Having a messy house or apartment can also be a sure fire way to get into a bad mood. This is when the sink is full of

dishes, the recycling bin is overflowing, the kitchen table is littered with junk mail and there are more clean clothes in the laun dry basket than the closet.

Spending time getting the household back to a bit of order can not only be sat isfying but can lift the bad mood.

To many people, weath er is a big determining fac tor of a good or bad mood. For me, hot and humid means misery, so there is nothing like a cool and crisp autumn morning to elevate my mood. Certain scenarios in nature can also make us feel very peaceful, like the bloom ing of spring flowers, the fresh scent of the earth after the rain or how freshly fallen snow lies si lently on the ground.

The dictionary defini tion of mood is “a tem porary state of mind or feeling.” Because a mood is just that - temporary - it means moods can change. While it is easy for a good mood to go bad because of outside influ ences, a bad mood can be turned around. Experts have made suggestions for lifting one’s mood, such as listening to music, taking a walk, spending time with our furry friends or calling a human friend, especially one who tends to make you laugh.

The old adage states, “Tomorrow is another day.” That means the bad mood won’t last forever. Tomorrow may actual ly be the day that your computer doesn’t freeze, when all cellphone calls go through, when you sleep well, when the house is not perfect but passable and when Mother Nature provides a picture-perfect day. And if not, there’s al ways the day after that.
