P.A.A.L. Receives Donation
Hurricane Ida brought devastating rainfall to the Downingtown area, and many community members’ homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged due to flooding. Among the businesses affected by the flood was P.A.A.L. (Preparing Adolescents with Autism for Adult Life), a specialty secondary-educational program for adolescents with moderate to severe autism between the ages of 14 and 21, which establishes a professional collaboration between the educational system, families and the community at large. When the leadership team of Franklin Flood, a locally headquartered flood insurance wholesaler, heard about the devastation P.A.A.L. experienced and learned of its under-coverage with flood insurance, the company coordinated a site visit with P.A.A.L. to tour the center and see the damage. On Sept. 28, Franklin Flood’s leadership team, including owner Christopher Mazza, president Greg Devone and vice president of business development Cassandra Dalmas, visited P.A.A.L. and presented a check for $10,000 to help rebuild the center. The Franklin representatives were then gifted a banner created by all the students, with their names displayed in various colors, and the message “Thank you for helping us put our puzzle back together” in the center. The puzzle pieces reference the autism puzzle piece logo. The artwork has been framed and is now the centerpiece of Franklin Flood’s lobby. For more information or to donate to P.A.A.L.’s Rebuild the School page, visit http://paalprogram.org/index.php/ help-rebuild-the-paal-school.

Rotary Honors Bill Pierce
The Rotary Club of Coatesville recently held a special luncheon at the Coatesville Moose Lodge to honor Bill Pierce, executive director of Brandywine Valley Active Aging (BVAA). Pierce was named a Paul Harris Fellow and received a $1,000 grant for BVAA. Participants in the ceremony included George Carlino, past president of the BVAA and board member; Dania Langley, BVAA director of development; James Terry, BVAA board president and his wife, Nancy; Rich Saylor, past BVVA president; current Rotary board president Bob Sparr; and Dave Seegers, past president of the Coatesville Rotary and chair of the Rotary Club of Coatesville Foundation. “(As executive director of BVAA, Pierce) has continued to excel in his service, providing meals and activities for seniors during this COVID pandemic,” said Seegers. “He and the BVAA provide thousands of meals (to seniors) as well as offer assistance to those in need.” Earlier this year the Coatesville Area Senior Center changed its name to BVAA and expanded its geographic service area to include the communities previously served by the Downingtown Area Senior Center. BVAA’s Coatesville campus continues to operate at 250 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Coatesville. BVAA’s Downingtown campus operates at Brandywine Grace Church, 40 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Downingtown. BVAA also offers a virtual platform.
Pierce reported that during the past 18 months, BVAA, with support from its partner network, has served more than 80,000 prepared meals and distributed more than 200,000 pounds of fresh produce, dairy and other groceries. Online programs are also provided for seniors to keep them socially active.

Downingtown Group Receives Funds Communities That Care of Greater Downingtown (CTC) has received $51,000 in state funding to expand its youth prevention programming. These funds will support the CTC collective and staff in providing evidence-based programs that aim to encourage and empower youths to make positive choices, as well as to promote positive mental health and prevent substance use. CTC plans to use these funds to support and expand its Healthy Youth Positive Energy (HYPE) clubs, which are student-led clubs that work to create a healthy school community through advocacy, peer-to-peer support, and leadership. By engaging youths directly in a collaborative, community-based change townlively.com
effort, HYPE aims to give young people the skills, confidence, and experiences they need to become effective advocates for positive social change. In addition, the funds will assist with the expansion of the SOS: Signs of Suicide prevention program. SOS: Signs of Suicide is an evidence-based mental health prevention program and early intervention program. SOS teaches students how to identify the signs of depression and suicide in themselves and their peers, as well as help-seeking skills to access resources in the school and community. State Rep. Danielle Friel Otten was instrumental in assisting CTC of Greater Downingtown in
securing the state grant, which came from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. CTC of Greater Downingtown is a coalition of organizations, businesses, schools, faith communities, law enforcement, and health care providers using evidence-based prevention programs and policies to foster positive mental health and youth development. Through a collective impact approach, CTC helps communities identify and implement changes intended to help students be successful at school, at home, and in the community. CTC’s mission is to empower youths to make positive choices to reach their full potential. To learn more, visit www.dtownctc.org.

like family members. The old belief that dogs should not be allowed on the furniture often does not apply to pet parents. In fact, not only are the dogs allowed to sit with us on the sofa, but they also sleep with us. In many cases, pet parents only get a small corner of the bed so that our cats or dogs can have room to spread out. Sleeping dogs are great bed warmers, by the way. I love the cartoon that shows a husband and wife in bed with several pet dogs and the wife says, “Pass me a dog; I’m cold.” Another favorite post of mine from Facebook features a man who says, “My girlfriend does not like my beagle, Molly, so I had to re-home her.” And, by “her,” he wasn’t talking about Molly. We also talk to our pets. When leaving the house, we not only tell them how long we will be gone, but we also tell them where we are going and our expectations. The reward is that when we get back, we are greeted with great exuberance and excitement. Pet owners give their dogs and cats nicknames. Our Jack Russell terrier, Abby, answers to Abbs, Abeshola and Nubbin, a name that reflects her cropped tail. Because Abby is a bit chubby, she has some unflattering nicknames as well, including Pork Roll, given to her by our neighbor, and Sausage, given to her by the vet. Working at home with two dogs can be a challenge because they choose the most inappropriate times to bark, such as when I’m conducting a phone interview. Perched by the window, they never let a squirrel go by unnoticed. They also know how
to tell time. They are at the ready to bark when the mailman comes, and they know the weekly trash pickup schedule. My neighbor gets home from work at 5 p.m., and soon afterward she walks her dog, Agnes. My dogs know the time of the day and are stationed at the window just in time, ready to bark. And with two dogs, who needs an alarm clock? Yes, we deal with their flaws and shenanigans and the occasional accident, but dogs and cats are only here for us to love for a short time. When they pass on, it is very painful, but I have found that getting a new little fur baby to love helps ease that pain. There are so many dogs and cats out there searching for their forever families. Pets don’t need expensive toys to play with or designer outfits to wear. All they need is our love. They can’t speak for themselves, so we must speak for them and protect them. And this coming New Year’s Eve, when our neighbors enjoy setting off fireworks at midnight, I will be awake not only to celebrate the start of a new year, but to comfort little Nike, who will be safely tucked in under his blanket pressed close to me in my small corner of the bed. townlively.com
Rosary Walk Dedicated At PJP II BY FRANCINE FULTON After creating two outdoor classrooms for students and teachers to use at Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School (PJP II) in West Brandywine, Lizzie Heinz has now created a Rosary Walk at the school as her Eagle Scout service project. The walk features a path where students may pray the Rosary outdoors by following a series of signs that depict the Mysteries of the Rosary, which are important moments in the life of Jesus Christ and his mother, Mary. The Rosary Walk was dedicated on Oct. 17 by the Rev. Michael Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Parish, who blessed each sign on the walk with Holy Water. He also led those attendance in several prayers and provided a blessing: “God bless (Lizzie) and those who use this symbol of prayer and of the Blessed Mother.” The Rosary consists of beads in groups of 10 (decades), and people recite the Hail Mary while holding each small bead. On the larger beads separating the decades, different prayers are said, and there are particular Mysteries associated
with each decade. Currently, the Mysteries depicted on the signs at PJP II are from the Joyful Mysteries, and the signs include images of the Nativity and the Presentation, when Jesus was taken to the temple. Other mysteries are the Glorious Mysteries, which include the Assumption of Mary into heaven, and the Luminous Mysteries, which include events such as Christ’s baptism. Lizzie noted that the boxes were constructed so that photos from each of the Mysteries could be interchanged. The Rosary Walk also includes an introductory sign and a prayer box at the end. “The kids can write or draw on a piece of paper what they want to pray for,” Lizzie said. In addition, Lizzie created a pamphlet that explains the Mysteries and presented each PJP II student with his or her own Rosary to use on the Rosary Walk. Lizzie is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 611, which meets at Hibernia United Methodist Church. She previously completed the outdoor classrooms to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award. “They allowed girls to join (Boy Scouts, now Scouts BSA) a few
years ago and just last year I found a troop that I wanted to join,” she explained. “When I did the outdoor classroom, Mrs. (Patricia) Tarquinio, the vice principal, mentioned that if I had any more projects that I wanted to do, she had things that I could do.” Lizzie completed the project with the help of family members and fellow Scouts. “The (photos) were specially printed for this and we cut the wood, sanded it and put (the signs) together,” she said, noting the lumber was donated by Home Depot in Parkesburg. She wanted the project to be dedicated in October, which is traditionally observed by Catholics as the Month of the Holy Rosary. Lizzie is currently working on the final paperwork for her project and plans to have her Eagle Scout Lizzie Heinz has created a Rosary Walk at Court of Honor ceremony in Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic December. VAMC Recognized For Green Practices
This green space at the Coatesville VA Medical Center outside Building 6 is the result of the tree management and storm water project where infiltration trenches redirect excess water and revitalize local aquifers. Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) received the the 2021 Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth, an organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is given annually to honor health care’s achievements in sustainability. To be recognized, Coatesville VAMC needed to demonstrate continuous improvement and expansion of programs intended to lower energy and water consumption, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably, establish environmentally preferable purchasing criteria, and more. Of note this year was the tree management and storm water project.
