Ruby, who was rescued by Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR), is look ing for her forever home. She is young and had a hard life. Her eye was infected and had to be removed in an extensive eye surgery but she has since recovered and is healing well.
In July, Ruby delivered six kittens in an animal hoarding home and was surrendered to a high-kill shelter the next day. At the shelter, Ruby and her entire family were immediately timestamped for euthanasia. LDAR was able to rescue her and her family less than 24 hours before their time ran out.
Through the stress of change and illness, Ruby managed to care for her kittens and even accepted an orphaned kitten as one of her own. Her kittens have since been adopted, and it is now her turn to find her forever family. Through all of these struggles, she remained trusting, gentle and affectionate.
Ruby is a very young cat who loves sleeping next to a warm human and is friendly toward cats and dogs if given proper time to be introduced. She also gives hugs.

Surviving The Flood: Messiah Church Recovers From Hurricane Ida
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe day after Hur ricane Ida passed through Downingtown on Sept. 1, 2021, people showed up to Messiah Lutheran Church, one of the locations that was dev astated by the floodwaters. However, not all of those who worked at the church removing water-soaked carpeting, drywall and furniture were congrega tion members.
“That was Labor Day weekend, and there were hundreds of people out. People were just showing up to the area and help
ing. It was beautiful,” said the Rev. Timothy Knauss, pastor, dubbing the help as “God sightings.” “The entire community rallied to meet the needs of Downingtown’s neigh bors and businesses.”
Now, more than a year after the devasta tion, the congregation of Messiah Lutheran Church was able to worship in the church sanctuary for the first time on Dec. 11.
“It’s been a long process, and we’re not fully recov ered yet, but worshiping in our sanctuary is a tre mendous step forward for us,” said Knauss.
According to Knauss, the storm brought nearly 200,000 gallons of water into the church basement below a por tion of the building and brought in almost four feet of water throughout the complex. “The altar actually floated on the platform that it sat on, (so) the altar did not get damaged with water,” he noted.
Immediately following the flood, the congrega tion worshiped together via Zoom, as it did during the pandemic.
In November 2021, Messiah partnered with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Coatesville to worship together, with
the help of the Rev. Susan Lynch, Good Shepherd’s late pastor. “Our choirs joined to gether, and our praise team came over for the second service,” Knauss said. “It was awesome to see two congregations and two styles of wor ship working together.”
At the end of July of 2022, Messiah’s congre gation returned to its church building, holding worship services in the church’s fellowship hall, which became a make shift chapel. In August, the congregation voted to move forward with a partial restoration of the sanctuary.
“It doesn’t look the
same. We have pews from another church that we bought that were not designed for our facility, but we’ll get there,” Knauss stated, noting that the previous pews absorbed water and swelled, so they had to be discarded. “We are calling it a minimal resto ration,” he noted.
The church is now discussing other renova tions, along with the help of FEMA. “Our fellowship hall and our sanctuary are on a concrete slab, but our connecting build ing, where our church offices and preschool were located, is going to require a more in-depth conversation because of
the basement,” explained Knauss.
Knauss said he is grate ful for how the church and community worked together through a trag edy. “It’s how God works in all of us. There is always a light (and) hope,” he said.
Messiah Lutheran Church is located at 46 W. Lancaster Ave., Downing town. Worship services are held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and on Sun days at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www. messiahlutherans.com or www.facebook.com/ messiahlutheran downingtown.
Whether living in an apartment complex, a townhome commu nity, a condo or a sin gle-family dwelling, we all have a common goal of keeping our homes safe while we all look out for one another. In our neighborhood, the houses are pretty far apart, but we all wave to one another or extend a smile or greeting as we drive along the road or walk our dogs.
For those who live in a neighborhood con sisting mostly of single homes, many of the homeowners fall into a specific category. There is always the one home that stands out because of the manicured lawn, perfectly contoured landscaping and flowers and trees that bloom seasonally. These are the homeowners who will not let a weed grow in their flower bed or al low a fallen leaf to find its home on the front yard in the fall. In our
neighborhood we have one of these home owners, whom we have nicknamed the “Lawn Patrol.”
Conversely, there is generally always one home in the neighbor hood that is considered an eyesore. These are the people who put their Christmas tree out for the trash on Valentine’s Day, whose mailbox is slightly crooked and who wait just a little too long before mowing the grass in the summer. This home generally has Christmas lights that stay up year-round and trash cans that stay by the road and never seem to make it back to the house.
Then there are the super sweet neighbors who never miss an op portunity to share their harvest of fresh vege tables in the summer time, who bring food over when they make too much and who put homemade Christmas cookies in your mailbox during the holidays.
Along with the ste reotypical neighbors there are those who are unique characters. In our neighborhood we have Big Jerry, who walks the dog in his pa jama pants. Our neigh bor across the street loves to play the electric guitar as a hobby. How ever, his wife is not a big fan, so he sits outside in the warmer weather and strums classic rock tunes by groups like Alabama and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
We have a whole population of dog walk ers. My next-door neigh bor walks Agnes and Mia at the same time each day. You can set your clock by it. Kobe, the most popular neigh borhood dog, frequently gets out of the fencedin yard. Sometimes it takes four or five of us neighbors to round him up.
Being a good neighbor means being part of a community. If we get our neighbor’s mail by mistake, we walk it over to their house instead of returning it to the

post office. If we see that a package has been delivered to our neighbor and is sitting out in the rain or snow, we will pick it up and bring it to their covered porch. We especially keep an eye on things when we know our neighbors are out of town.
The goal is to be the kind of person you would want to live next door to you. Strive to be a little more like the Lawn Patrol, share your time or help when needed. And, if you live in a neighbor hood, take down those Christmas lights and put out the tree in January, fix that mailbox, take in those trash cans and always keep your lawn mowed!
