Ruby, who was rescued by Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR), is look ing for her forever home. She is young and had a hard life. Her eye was infected and had to be removed in an extensive eye surgery but she has since recovered and is healing well.
In July, Ruby delivered six kittens in an animal hoarding home and was surrendered to a high-kill shelter the next day. At the shelter, Ruby and her entire family were immediately timestamped for euthanasia. LDAR was able to rescue her and her family less than 24 hours before their time ran out.
Through the stress of change and illness, Ruby managed to care for her kittens and even accepted an orphaned kitten as one of her own. Her kittens have since been adopted, and it is now her turn to find her forever family. Through all of these struggles, she remained trusting, gentle and affectionate.
Ruby is a very young cat who loves sleeping next to a warm human and is friendly toward cats and dogs if given proper time to be introduced. She also gives hugs.

Surviving The Flood: Messiah Church Recovers From Hurricane Ida
BY FRANCINE FULTONThe day after Hurricane Ida passed through Downingtown on Sept. 1, 2021, people showed up to Messiah Lutheran Church, one of the locations that was devastated by the floodwaters. However, not all of those who worked at the church removing water-soaked carpeting, drywall and furniture were congregation members.
“That was Labor Day weekend, and there were hundreds of people out. People were just showing up to the area and helping. It was beautiful,” said the Rev. Timothy Knauss, pastor, dubbing the help as “God sightings.” “The entire community rallied to meet the needs of Downingtown’s neighbors and businesses.”
Now, more than a year after the devastation, the congregation of Messiah Lutheran Church was able to worship in the church sanctuary for the first time on Dec. 11. “It’s been a long process, and we’re not fully recovered yet, but worshiping in our sanctuary is a tremendous step forward for us,” said Knauss.
According to Knauss, the storm brought nearly 200,000 gallons of water into the church basement below a portion of the building and brought in almost four feet of water throughout the complex. “The altar actually floated on the platform that it sat on, (so) the altar did not get damaged with water,”
he noted. Immediately following the flood, the congregation worshiped together via Zoom, as it did during the pandemic.
In November 2021, Messiah partnered with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Coatesville to worship together, with the help of the Rev. Susan Lynch, Good Shepherd’s late pastor. “Our choirs joined together, and our praise team came over for the second service,” Knauss said. “It was awesome to see two congregations and two
styles of worship working together.”
At the end of July of 2022, Messiah’s congregation returned to its church building, holding worship services in the church’s fellowship hall, which became a makeshift chapel. In August, the congregation voted to move forward with a partial restoration of the sanctuary.
“It doesn’t look the same. We have pews from another church that we bought that were not designed for our facility, but we’ll get there,” Knauss stated, noting that
the previous pews absorbed water and swelled, so they had to be discarded. “We are calling it a minimal restoration,” he noted.
The church is now discussing other renovations, along with the help of FEMA. “Our fellowship hall and our sanctuary are on a concrete slab, but our connecting building, where our church offices and preschool were located, is going to require a more indepth conversation because of the basement,” explained Knauss.
Knauss said he is grateful
for how the church and community worked together through a tragedy. “It’s how God works in all of us. There is always a light (and) hope,” he said.
Messiah Lutheran Church is located at 46 W. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. Worship services are held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. and on Sundays at 10 a.m. For more information, visit www.messiahlutherans .com or www.facebook.com/ messiahlutherandowning town.
New 4-H Club To Offer Outdoor Adventures
BY FRANCINE FULTON“It’s all about keeping (youths) busy,” said Chester County 4-H Extension educator Audrey Reith, when describing the new Chesco Outdoor Club. Since its formation, club members have taken part in hikes at local parks and held their first organized activity - an outdoor cooking event that took place on Dec. 3 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook.
During the program, participants made a campfire and prepared a meal that included fresh vegetables like potatoes and carrots. Some youths also made hot dogs and other food items they brought from home.
While some items like sweet potatoes were wrapped in foil and placed directly on the fire, most of the food was cooked using buddy burners, which the youths made with the help of 4-H volunteer Susan Johnson.
Also known as a hobo stove, a buddy burner is a portable stove made from a large aluminum can. Using can openers, the youths made holes in the sides of the cans to allow the smoke to escape. They filled smaller cans with corrugated cardboard and paraffin wax and placed these under the larger cans as a heat source.
“We recycled large coffee cans. One of our 4-H alumni owns a diner
and donated the cans,” noted Reith. “They could use the buddy burners, which they made, (to cook their food) or cook over the campfire.”
Students also took part in a knife safety program presented by volunteer Paul Sanoski, whose wife, Susan, also volunteered at the event.
Reith said the new club, open to youths ages 8 to 18, was formed when members of other 4-H Clubs expressed an interest in outdoor activities. “As an educator, I like listening to what the kids want to do,” said Reith,
who is also the leader of the SPARKS 4-H Ag Club in West Grove. “We are looking at not only (visiting) county and state parks, but at other historic sites like local furnaces,” she said, noting that the students are also interested in archery. “We already hiked at Marsh Creek State Park and Nottingham County Park. It will
be totally about outdoor adventures.”
For more information about the new Chesco Outdoor Club, including details about upcoming events, contact the Penn State Extension Chester County office at ChesterExt@psu.edu or 610-696-3500 or email Reith at alr5762@psu. edu.

SJW Foundation Awards Scholarships
To Downingtown Tennis Players
Sweet Jane’s Wish (SJW) Foundation recently announced that Lauren Ayres, a senior at Downingtown West High School, and Nicky Burke, a senior at Downingtown East High School, have been selected as the fall winners of the annual SJW scholarship fund.
Four students are selected each school year from the tennis and ice hockey teams by the SJW Foundation. This past spring, Alie Bogusch and Sean Woods earned the honor.
The SJW Foundation is a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation and honors the memory of Jane Gerlach Booge, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2012 at age 47. Jane attended Downingtown High School and was a member of the tennis team. She took part in numerous championship matches, including districts and state competitions. Jane was well known for her compassion and friendship to many.

t You Be My Neighbor?
BY FRANCINE FULTONI disagree with the concept that “good fences make good neighbors.” While our neighbors are not necessarily our closest friends, it is important to have good neighbors and to be a good neighbor.
Whether living in an apartment complex, a townhome community, a condo or a single-family dwelling, we all have a common goal of keeping our homes safe while we all look out for one another. In our neighborhood, the houses are pretty far apart, but we all wave to one another or extend a smile or greeting as we drive along the road or walk our dogs.
For those who live in a neighborhood consisting mostly of single homes, many of the homeowners fall into a specific category. There is always the one home that stands out because of the manicured lawn, perfectly contoured landscaping and flowers and trees that bloom seasonally. These are the homeowners who will not let a weed grow in their flower bed or allow a fallen leaf to find its home on the front yard in the fall. In our neighborhood we have one of these homeowners, whom we have nicknamed the “Lawn Patrol.”
Conversely, there is generally always one home in the neighborhood that is considered an eyesore. These are the people who put their Christmas tree out for the trash on Valentine’s Day, whose mailbox is slightly crooked and who wait just a little too long before mowing the grass in the summer. This home generally has Christmas lights that stay up year-round and trash cans that stay by
the road and never seem to make it back to the house.
Then there are the super sweet neighbors who never miss an opportunity to share their harvest of fresh vegetables in the summertime, who bring food over when they make too much and who put homemade Christmas cookies in your mailbox during the holidays.
Along with the stereotypical neighbors there are those who are unique characters. In our neighborhood we have Big Jerry, who walks the dog in his pajama pants. Our neighbor across the street loves to play the electric guitar as a hobby. However, his wife is not a big fan, so he sits outside in the warmer weather and strums classic rock tunes by groups like Alabama and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
We have a whole population of dog walkers. My next-door neighbor walks Agnes and Mia at the same time each day. You can set your clock by it. Kobe, the most popular neighborhood dog, frequently gets out of the fenced-in yard. Sometimes it takes four or five of us neighbors to round him up.
Being a good neighbor means being part of a community. If we get our neighbor’s mail by mistake, we walk it over to their house instead of returning it to the post office. If we see that a package has been delivered to our neighbor and is sitting out in the rain or snow, we will pick it up and bring it to their covered porch. We especially keep an eye on things when we know our neighbors are out of town.
The goal is to be the kind of person you would want to live next door to you. Strive to be a little more like the Lawn Patrol, share your time or help when needed. And, if you live in a neighborhood, take down those Christmas lights and put out the tree in January, fix that mailbox, take in those trash cans and always keep your lawn mowed!
Scholarships
share Jane’s qualities of determination, focus and camaraderie and have a love of tennis or ice hockey. Lauren and Nicky are both tennis team captains.
Lauren and Nicky join the previous 34 recipients of the $4,500 award.
To date, the SJW Foundation has awarded more than $105,000 in scholarships to Downingtown East and West High School seniors who have participated in the student tennis and ice hockey programs and plans to further their education at a university, college or trade school.
Due to the success of the annual golf outing and the generosity of supporters, the SJW Foundation is also able to support the Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) organization and the Chester County Hospital foundation SHiNE with a yearly donation. The SJW Foundation has donated more than $21,000 to support local families experiencing financial crisis, due to the additional costs incurred while fighting breast cancer.
SJW Foundation scholarships are funded by the annual golf outing, dinner and auction and by donations from the community. Next year’s 12th annual golf outing will be held on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, at the Downingtown Country Club. Donation Drive Aids DVCCC
Continuing a call for assistance and protection of women, the Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) led a winter holiday project, Lights On for the Holidays, to benefit the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). Joined by women’s service sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha-Iota Tau Omega and WSFS, members of the CCSO provided donations to help provide electricity at safe houses and offices of DVCCC.
Throughout the year, one role of deputies at the CCSO is to serve Protection From Abuse orders, which are intended to provide protective relief by prohibiting abusers from contacting survivors and their children. Sometimes, survivors are forced to leave their homes for safety and end up at an emergency shelter or transitional home. Although men are sometimes abused, the majority of survivors are women.
