Performing Arts York, Pa., may not be as noted for its performing arts offerings as another well-known town with “York” in its name, but the central Pennsylvania town and the surrounding county may surprise visitors and residents with the scope and quality of its theater, music, and dance scene. THEATER York County features its share of theater companies. Currently celebrating its 80th anniversary, York Little Theatre, 27 S. Belmont St., York, offers a variety of productions. The theater will wrap up its 80th season with its production of the popular musical “The Producers,” which will be staged from Friday to Sunday, July 12 to 14, and Thursday to Sunday, July 18 to 21, and its production of “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” a new musical comedy fable for mature audiences, on Friday to Sunday, Aug. 9 to 11, and Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 15 to 18. York Little Theatre will also present a slate of performing arts camps this summer for children and youths of various ages. The mission of DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre, 100 Carlisle Ave., York, is to foster and inspire growth, creativity, responsibility, and an appreciation for live theater in people of all ages and cultures through an educational theater arts program. According to the DreamWrights website, the organization was founded in 1997 by a group of families who believed that participation in a theater education program would have a positive impact on their children. The theater has maintained its commitment to sharing theater experiences with children through offering classes, workshops, and camps, as well as by offering plenty of family-friendly shows. Productions suitable for all ages that remain on DreamWrights’ 2013 schedule include “Harvey” on Fridays to Sundays, Aug. 9 to 11 and Aug 16-18; “Sleepy Hollow” on Fridays to Sundays, Oct. 4 to 6, 11 to 13, and 18 to 20; and “Miracle on 34th Street” on Fridays to Sundays, Dec. 6 to 8, 13 to 15, and 20 to 22. As another family-friendly offering, DreamWrights presents special Playlet and Breakfast programs in conjunction with some of its shows. Designed for children ages 3 to 6, these programs introduce young children to live theater and include breakfast, a craft, the performance of a scene from the current play, and opportunities to go on stage and to meet actors. DreamWrights also plans a production of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” from Thursday, June 20, to Sunday June 23, which contains content that may not be suitable for younger viewers. Also on the DreamWrights schedule for 2013 is the Dream Derby Road Rally on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 12:57 to 4:27 p.m. In this fundraiser,

Theatergoers craving more of “The Bard” need only look to another York County theater group, OrangeMite Studios of Dover, which is committed to presenting high-quality performances of all of Shakespeare’s works through its Shakespeare in the Barn program. OrangeMite will follow up its production of Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labor’s Lost,” slated for Friday to Sunday, May 17 to 19, and Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25, with another of the Bard’s classic works, “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which will be presented from Thursday to Sunday, July 25 to 28. Both productions will be presented at the Barn at Tall Fir Acres, 2035 Tall Fir Drive, Dover, an intimate venue with wooden architecture. OrangeMite Studios also presents Shakespeare’s works in the form of original adaptations written by local playwrights. This year, the organization will present “Vengeance for Hotspur,” a Western adaptation of parts one and two of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV,” on Thursday, Oct. 3, through Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Barn. Since its formation in 2008, OrangeMite has presented productions of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” “The Comedy of Errors,” “The Merchant of Venice,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Two Gentleman of Verona,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” and “Timon of Athens.” In addition to its dedication to the Bard, the arts organization prides itself on consistently performing original musicals and plays by local playwrights. It may not be Shakespeare, but Hanover Little Theatre will present its own classic production – “Snoopy!” – this summer as part of its 64th season of programming. The musical production will take to the stage at Hanover Little Theatre, 360 Blooming Grove Road, Hanover, on Thursday to Sunday, July 11 to 14, and Thursday to Saturday, July 18 to 20. Commemorating York County’s
Civil War H For a few days in late June of 1863, York County took a starring role in the events of the United States Civil War. Several pivotal events took place in York County before the Union and Confederate armies squared off during the epic Battle of Gettysburg from July 1 to 3, 1863, in neighboring Adams County. When Confederate troops approached York in late June, the town was virtually defenseless, so it forged a surrender deal, agreeing that its citizens would not put up any resistance in exchange for the invaders’ assurance that they would not burn the town or harm the citizens. On June 28, 1863, York became the largest Northern town occupied by the Confederate Army. Under the arrangement, the Confederates allowed York residents to pass freely within the town, and the townspeople regularly interacted with the occupiers. The Confederates soon encountered resistance, however, at the Battle of Hanover on June 30, which featured North-South fighting in the square of the York County town, and when the bridge connecting Wrightsville and Columbia was burned on June 28 to prevent the Confederate Army from crossing the Susquehanna River. As the bridge burned, the Confederate soldiers worked for hours to prevent the town of Wrightsville from going up in flames as well. In 2013, a number of sesquicentennial events are planned in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of when the War Between the States came to York County. Residents and visitors may delve deeper into this important moment in York County history through community programs, museum exhibits, walking tours, and more, as opportunities abound to learn more about these historical events and the soldiers and civilians who experienced them firsthand. Aiming to highlight many aspects of the county’s Civil War story, York County Heritage Trust, 250 E. Market St., York, will debut its new exhibit, “The Fiery Trial: York County’s Civil War Experience,” this summer. The exhibit, which will focus on the role of York County and
southcentral Pennsylvania in the Civil War, will open to members on Friday, June 28, and to the public on Saturday, June 29. The exhibit will feature firsthand accounts of the events of the war from those living in York County. These accounts show the community’s response to the events of the war, expressing fear in the wake of a Confederate invasion, showing a divided community, detailing the great sacrifices made by soldiers and civilians, and more. Featuring period artifacts, objects, papers, documents, and printed items, the exhibit will cover the origins of the conflict in the 1820s and also consider the war’s legacy. The ties of the local community to nationally known people and events will also be examined. For more information on the exhibit, readers may visit http://yorkheritage.org. Leading up to the sesquicentennial events, York Civil War Round Table will present the program "More Civil War Voices from York County” on Wednesday, June 26, at 7 p.m. The free program will be presented by Scott Mingus and Jim McClure at the York County Heritage Trust’s Historical Society Museum at 250 E. Market St., York. History buffs may also head to the Hanover Junction Train Station, one of York County’s historical sites with Civil War significance. Located at 2433 Seven Valleys Road in North Codorus Township, Hanover Junction Train Station has been restored to its appearance during the early 1860s, when it played a role in the events of the Civil War. The train station was raided by the Confederates on June 27, 1863. President Abraham Lincoln visited the station later in the year on Nov. 18 and 19 on his way to and from Gettysburg to deliver the Gettysburg Address. The station was again a part of history in April 1865, when Lincoln’s funeral train passed through. Present-day visitors to the Hanover Junction Train Station museum can learn more about the station’s Civil War history during its open hours, which include Saturdays from May through October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from June to September from 1 to 5 p.m.
This monument in Wrightsville pays tribute to the town’s role in the Civil War in June 1863. This summer, a series of events are planned in Wrightsville and neighboring areas to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the burning of the bridge across the Susquehanna River between Wrightsville and Columbia to thwart the further advancement of the Confederates.

H eritage The station will also be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27; Independence Day, Thursday, July 4; and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2. The Hanover Junction Train Station will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 10 and 24. For more information about the historic train station, readers may call York County Parks at 717-840-7440 or visit www.yorkcountyparks.org. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. The borough of Hanover will commemorate its place in Civil War history from Saturday, June 29, to Tuesday, July 2. Coinciding with the town's 250th anniversary, events are planned to highlight the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hanover. A parade will be held on June 29, and a ceremony on Sunday, June 30, will take place at Wirt Park. A cavalry demonstration, bringing the Battle of Hanover to life, is planned for July 2 at the Sheppard Farm in Hanover. Gates will open at 1 p.m., with the battle starting at 6 p.m. Camps will be open for visitors, and nearly 200 cavalry are expected for this rain-or-shine event. There will be an admission fee, with youths ages 12 to 18 receiving a discount and children under age 12 being admitted for free. Interested readers may call 717-334-2828 for tickets. While in Hanover, Civil War enthusiasts may also take a self-guided walking tour that follows the footsteps of the encounter in Hanover. Visitors may embark on the walking tour throughout the year; guides are available at the Hanover Chamber of Commerce, the Hanover Library, and area lodging facilities. For a complete schedule of Hanover’s events and more information, readers may visit www.hanover2013.com/. One of the most well-known incidents in York County’s Civil War involvement is the burning of the bridge across the Susquehanna River between Columbia and Wrightsville to thwart the Confederates’ further advancement. Locations in Wrightsville and Columbia will commemorate the 150th anniversary of this fiery moment in the towns’ heritage as well as other aspects of local Civil War history. Flames Across the Susquehanna on Friday, June 28, from 7 to 10 p.m., will mark the 150th anniversary of the burning of the bridge. Ceremonial fires atop the 25 piers that span the river and once supported the original bridge will be lit at dusk, and a narration of the historical events of 150 years ago will be offered. Prior to the ceremony at dusk, the Susquehanna Travelers, a troupe of Civil War musicians, will provide entertainment from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on the grounds of John Wright Store and Restaurant, North Front Street, Wrightsville, which overlook the piers. There will also be an encampment, and a display of fireworks is planned for 10 p.m. Donations will be accepted.
A rain date of Saturday, June 29, has been set. Wrightsville and other locations along the Susquehanna River will also offer a number of Civil War-themed events in the days surrounding the Flames Across the Susquehanna event. The Burning of the Bridge Diorama, 124 Hellam St., Wrightsville, is commemorating the sesquicentennial throughout the year. Featuring a newly remodeled interior for 2013, the diorama is open to the public on Sundays, May 12 through Oct. 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. and also by appointment by calling 717-252-1169. Community members may bring an envelope or post card to Historic Wrightsville Museum, 309 Locust St., Wrightsville, from 9 a.m. to noon on June 29 to receive a commemorative cancellation. A book signing by Scott Mingus will be offered at Historic Wrightsville Museum on June 30 from 1 to 5 p.m. “The Civil War Comes to Wrightsville” slideshow will be presented on June 30 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Locust Street United Methodist Church, 314 Locust St., Wrightsville. A Civil War encampment will be held in Wrightsville River Park from 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, through 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 30. People of all ages will receive a glimpse into the lives of Civil War soldiers, as they listen to period music, sample rations, and discuss firearms and other topics with participating living historians. History tours will abound in the area. Historic Wrightsville, Inc. will offer several tours, and tickets will be available for these tours at the Historic Wrightsville Museum on the day of the event. The Historic Wrightsville Walking Tour, which stages from the Historic Wrightsville Museum, will be offered on June 29 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. and on June 30 at 3 p.m. A tour of Fairview Cemetery in Wrightsville at noon on June 29 and 30 will be led by tour guides from Lower Windsor Historical Society and Historic Wrightsville, Inc. Additionally, the Wrightsville Riverfront Tour will be offered at June 29 at 2 p.m. at Wrightsville River Park, and a cemetery tour of Union Cemetery and Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Wrightsville and Lower Windsor Township will be presented on June 29 at 4 p.m. In addition, Shank’s Mare Outfitters will offer the Burning of the Bridge Paddle Tour from noon to 3 p.m. on June 29. Kayaks will launch from the Wrightsville shore and follow the footprint of the bridge that was burned. Tour participants will learn about the history of this Civil War event and view encampments on both sides of the river. Rental kayaks will be available. To register, readers may contact Shank's Mare Outfitters at 717-252-1616. For further details on the sesquicentennial events in Wrightsville and other area river towns, readers may visit www.parivertowns.com, www. rivertownes.org, and www.facebook.com/civilwar150rivertowns. In nearby Hellam, the Kreutz Creek Valley Preservation Society Museum, 5345 Lincoln Highway, Hellam, will present a special exhibit of Civil War artifacts that features information on men from Hellam who served in the war. The museum display will be offered through June, and the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. No admission is charged. In addition to June’s festivities, a number of resources are available for those interested in delving even deeper into York County’s Civil War history. The York County Heritage Trust’s special collections include

“Civil War Soldiers: York/Adams County,” a database of York and Adams County soldiers who served in the Civil War, and “Pennsylvania Civil War Civilian Damage Claims (Pennsylvania Border Claims).” York County Civil War history is the focus of the website at www.yorklinks. net/cw/index.htm and the blog at www.yorkblog.com/cannonball/, and there is a “Civil War in York County, Pa.” page on Pinterest. The York Civil War Round Table, which seeks to promote, interpret, preserve, and protect the Civil War heritage of York County through education and the exchange of information, holds monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of every month, except December, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the York County Heritage Trust’s Historical Society Museum. The free meetings feature speakers who share on Civil War topics. Membership in the group is also free to anyone. The websites at http://pacivilwar150.com/ and http://www.pacivilwartrails.com/ provide detailed information on Pennsylvania’s role in the Civil War, including historical context, facts and figures, and personal accounts.
