History Lives Here: Memorable Museums in York County
In 2013, York County commemorated the 150th anniversary of its major involvement in the United States Civil War. While that celebration has concluded, local history extends far beyond those well-known events of 1863. In fact, museums galore await York County residents and visitors with fascinating stories, artifacts, and experiences that will make various eras come alive. The Old Line Museum, so named for its proximity to the Mason-Dixon Line, was founded in Delta in the 1970s as a way to emphasize local Welsh heritage. Museum visitors can view numerous artifacts, photographs, and articles of clothing, as well as the Slate Clock, which was constructed by lifelong slate miner Humphrey O. Pritchard using three kinds of slate. The museum owns and is currently involved in the process of restoring two 1850s cottages that once housed quarry workers who lived in the area in the mid-19th century. History seekers are also welcome to stop by the Heritage Museum of New Freedom, which preserves the borough’s history through presenting important artifacts. Railroad aficionados can experience train travel 1860s-style thanks to Steam Into History, located in New Freedom. Regularly scheduled excursions are offered on the William H. Simpson No. 17, which is a steam locomotive replica of the train that
carried President Abraham Lincoln to deliver the Gettysburg Address. All trips offer round-trip travel from New Freedom to either Glen Rock or Hanover Junction. Train lovers can fast-forward to 1915 at the Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village in Airville. When not enjoying a 5-mile trip via motorcar train through the Muddy Creek Valley on the last surviving segment of the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad, visitors can experience life in the early 20th century by walking around the village, which includes a general store, a mill, and a grain elevator. The Indian Steps Museum, nestled along the banks of the scenic Susquehanna River in Airville, received its name from the “steps” carved into the river’s rocks by the early inhabitants of the region. The building itself was constructed in the early 1900s by John Edward Vandersloot, who wanted a place to house the Native American artifacts he had collected. Open to the public since the 1940s, the museum seeks to promote Native American culture, both through its collections and through the many programs it offers to people of all ages. The Historic Wrightsville Museum is located near the site of the famed 1863 bridge burning that prevented Confederate troops from crossing into adjacent Lancaster County. While visitors can certainly find a plethora of books and information

on Civil War happenings, the museum’s inventory also focuses on the history of the town of Wrightsville itself through both permanent displays and rotating exhibits. Another offering is the Burning of the Bridge Diorama, housed in another location nearby. Located close by between Hallam and York is the Shoe House, a unique advertising device constructed in the likeness of—you guessed it—a shoe. Built in 1948 by Mahlon N. Haines, owner of a shoe sales empire, the structure was originally used as a guest house. Its five levels included three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. These days, the giant high-topped work shoe, which is visible from U.S. Route 30, is open for tours and even includes a gift shop. The city of York offers ample opportunities for history lovers to take a walk into the past; one such venue is the Police Heritage Museum. Although the purpose of law enforcement has not changed over the centuries, the resources surely have, as evidenced by the museum’s exhibits. Visitors can view uniforms, equipment, and more while learning stories about real police officers from days gone by. People who enjoy the Police Heritage Museum may want to stop by the Fire Museum, also in York. The building, a historic 1903 firehouse, displays more than 225 years of local firefighting history, including horse-drawn fire carriages, vintage

fire trucks, firefighter uniforms and gear, sirens, old-fashioned alarm systems, and more. The Fire Museum is one of five sites in York that are operated by the York County Heritage Trust, and admission covers entry into all of them: the Fire Museum, the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, the Historical Society Museum, Bonham House, and the Colonial Complex. Visitors to the Agricultural and Industrial Museum will learn about the county’s numerous contributions in these areas, as displays showcase locally made wagons, steam engines, farm tools, and tractors. Working industrial exhibits such as an ammonia compressor, a gristmill, and a 1930s telephone exchange are also on site. The transportation wing of the building features York-manufactured vehicles, a 1937 Aeronca K airplane, and more. Among the 10,000 square feet of exhibits at the Historical Society Museum are quilts, photographs, and an extensive research library. The three-story Bonham House showcases many of the paintings of its early inhabitant, Horace Bonham, who moved into the house in 1875 with his wife, Rebekah, and two daughters. Guided tours give a realistic look at life in an upper-middle class family, and the historic home contains many fine examples of Victorian and Colonial Revival décor.

Upon entering the Colonial Complex, visitors cannot help but feel that they have actually stepped back into the 18th century. The four buildings on the property—General Gates House, Golden Plough Tavern, Barnett Bobb Log House, and the Colonial Courthouse—give a glimpse into the political landscape, tavern life, and personal happenings of the time. Among the historical flair in the northern part of the county are two Dillsburg properties owned by the Northern York County Historical Society: Dill’s Tavern and Plantation, which dates to approximately 1750, and the Maple Shade Barn, which has been in existence for a century. Both structures, which are
undergoing renovation and restoration processes, are available to rent for a variety of occasions. A different type of history is available for viewing at the Weightlifting Hall of Fame, located north of York city. The 8,000-square-foot facility offers a self-guided tour of the history of strength sports, traversing the ages from the early Olympic Games to modern-day powerlifting, bodybuilding, and Olympic weightlifting. These historic sites are among York County’s many museum offerings, which give area residents and visitors a chance to experience local history in an exciting way.

YORK COUNTY, York County offers residents and visitors a variety of dining, entertainment, and recreation options throughout the year. Spring, summer, fall, winter - there's always something to do in York County.
Spring
S
• Row, row, row your boat! York County offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy kayaking, canoeing, and boating: from renting a watercraft at Lake Redman in William Kain Park to paddling a canoe or kayak in a race on the Susquehanna River.
• Groove to the sounds of live music. Shopping venues, wineries, and
museums are just some of the York County venues that host outdoor concerts during the spring and summer. York city’s Box Lunch Revue concert series, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May through August, even offers a musical interlude in the middle of the day.
• Sample local libations when springtime brings the Mason-Dixon
Wine Trail’s annual Tour de Tanks. Participants may visit more than 20 family-owned wineries to talk with the winemakers, preview the season’s upcoming wines, and enjoy tasty treats.
• Take a hike…on the Heritage Rail Trail, that is. The 21-mile trail,
stretching from the Mason-Dixon Line up to the Colonial Courthouse in the city of York, is a popular spot for bike riding, walking, jogging, and horseback riding. History buffs will enjoy stopping at three historic structures – Hanover Junction, the New Freedom Train Station, and the Howard Tunnel – along the way.
Summer
• Enjoy America’s favorite pastime by taking in a York Revolution
game. Throughout the summer, there will be giveaways, special events, and the chance to cheer on York’s Atlantic League team.
•
The warm months are the perfect time to visit some of York County’s many outdoor flea markets and farm stands to stock up on fresh, local produce, as well as crafts and other treasures.
• Support the community while getting some exercise. Golf tour-
naments, 5K races, and other athletic pursuits are held across the county to raise funds for local organizations that support the community and its residents as well as national and international causes.
• Immerse yourself in the local culture and arts scene by taking a walk-
ing tour of the many large and small murals in downtown York or perusing the stalls and offerings at one of the county’s varied summer art and crafts fairs.

Seasons IN ALL
Fall
• Celebrate the harvest by visiting one of the many orchards
or farms in York County. Many family-friendly spots offer pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, as well as corn mazes and other fall fun.
• Local churches and community organizations offer community meals throughout the year, but these appetizing events are especially prevalent in the fall. Menu options abound, with dinners featuring turkey with all the trimmings, potpie, seafood dishes, spaghetti, hog maw, and much more.
• A trip to the York Fair is an annual tradition for thousands
of York County residents and visitors. With livestock competitions, a variety of exhibits, plenty of rides and games, world-class entertainers, and everyone’s favorite fair foods, it’s easy to see why fairgoers flock to this event each year.
• Enjoy the autumn foliage by rail. Area railroads such as the Ma & Pa Railroad in Airville and Steam Into History in New Freedom offer fall excursions that allow visitors to witness the seasonal beauty of nature.
Winter
• Celebrate the holiday season by checking out Christmas Magic, a half-mile walking trail in Rocky Ridge County Park that boasts hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights. Visitors will enjoy holiday scenes, animation, a train display, musical performances, opportunities to meet Santa Claus, and much more.
• Ring in the New Year! Over the years, towns across York County have devel-
oped a variety of traditions for celebrating the calendar change, including the pickle drop in Dillsburg and the cigar drop in Red Lion.
• Take a (frigid) dip for a good cause. Each year, scores of brave individu-
als take to the icy-cold waters of the Susquehanna River for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. The fundraiser supports Special Olympics York County's year-round slate of sports training and athletic competition programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
• The area is well-known for its many factory tours. Spend a day learning about local businesses by taking a Steel Toe Tour of the Harley-Davidson plant, scheduling a visit to Bluett Bros. Violins or Family Heirloom Weavers, or sampling the fare at Wolfgang Candy Company and Martin’s Potato Chips.
