Donegal students blast off into learning

In December, students at Donegal Intermediate School took a field trip far away. Far, far away. The school embarked on a unit of study about space, with departments including art, music, physical education, STEM and the library providing out-of-this-world curricula.

“We each personally have an interest in space in general and NASA’s recent missions - the James Webb telescope and

“We hope they will also develop their own natural curiosity and desire to learn and understand the world around them.”

the Artemis mission to the moon,” explained STEM teacher Nicole Shoemaker. “In addition, when I was teaching sixth grade, I realized that many students did not have a clear understanding of the basic structure of our solar system and the universe beyond our solar system. Then, we realized we had the opportunity to borrow the Starlab from the (Lancaster-Lebanon IU13) after completing training. So, we started building a unit full of information and experiences for students, and each year it has changed and evolved a bit.”

This was the first year departments across the school collaborated on the space unit.

“We are always looking to captivate our students in the area of health and fitness,” said librarian Andrew Wulfkuhle. “Collaborating with other specialists will help our lessons be more engaging and educational. While each of our specialty areas are different, trying to find ways to coordinate and collaborate between us make the students excited and the learning experience richer and more rigorous.”

For art, students learned about the chemical compositions of different planets and how those

affect the planets’ colors. They created artwork inspired by planetary palettes, using phosphorescent paint that will glow in a large blacklight gallery.

“This art installation will be an immersive experience on display at the Celebrate the Arts Night art show at Donegal Intermediate School in May,” said art teacher Kelly McCart.

Each grade level focused on a different aspect of space for the STEM and library units.

Third-graders learned about the solar system, and fourth grade studied Mars and the Mars Rover. Fifth-graders explored the Artemis mission to the moon, and

sixth-graders learned about the James Webb telescope.

“At a grade-appropriate level, each grade level does some research related to their topic, a hands-on project related to their topic, and then experiences the Starlab planetarium,” Wulfkuhle shared. “Sometimes we are also able to incorporate a movie or documentary and/or a Minecraft world related to their topic.”

In physical education classes, students completed “astronaut training,” learning how astronauts prepare to experience outer space, said teachers Dan Leighlitner and Sherrie Witmer.

Cheerleaders enjoy a perfect season

As a cheerleader for Donegal Youth Cheerleading, Lillie Smith wants people to know the depth of the sport.

“You don’t just wave pom poms and yell cheers,” she said. “You do a lot of fun things!”

For the members of the Green and White teams - for students in grades four to six and one through three, respectively - this past season has been particularly fun.

The teams won all first-place and grand champion honors at their three local competitions this past fall.

Competitions took place in Elizabethtown, Manheim Township and Hempfield school districts. An exhibition was also held at Donegal High School.

“Teams are from all over Lancaster and Lebanon county youth cheer programs, ranging from five to nine teams in each division,” explained Liz Smith, who coaches the Green Team. “The grand champion was against all first- through sixthgrade teams combined.”

Each competition requires the team members to perfect their routines. “The girls are judged on cheer, dance, tumbling and stunting,” Liz shared.

program, the teams are no strangers to success.

“Last season, we competed in two competitions and one exhibition with the White Team placing first at E-town and second at Manheim Township,” Liz remarked. “The Green Team placed first at E-town and first at Manheim Township, also winning grand champion, which is given at that competition.”

The teams’ season begins in August and runs through early November. Sign-ups for the teams occur in the spring for the following fall.

“Anyone within Donegal

School District is able to join, including private and homeschooled (students),” Liz said. “No tryouts are required or previous cheer experience.”

She encourages students to try cheerleading, noting, “Cheer is such a great sport because not only do you push yourself physically with the demanding stunts and tumbling and choreography, but you make lifelong friendships and memories. With starting at such a young age in the Braves organization, you are learning the skills and teamwork that is needed if you choose to follow the sport through junior high and high school.”

This year, three high school cheerleaders helped

College professor to speak at women’s group meeting

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

In her talk, “What Are You Thinking? Replacing Lies With Truth,” Susan Joy Simkins will share the strategy God outlines in Scripture for exercising dominion over what one permits into his or her mind.

A mango- and coconut-loving island girl, Simkins had a poor beginning and experienced a reversal of circumstances. She earned a doctorate from Ohio State University and is a professor of industrial-organizational psychology at the

to coach the youth program. “It was great to see the future generation of high school cheerleaders learning from the girls they look up to,” Liz said. “If your child has any interest in cheer, have them join the Braves organization. (They’ll enjoy) the way the coaches devote their time and energy in teaching all the basic skills to your child while having fun and growing so much as an athlete.”

Lillie, a sixth-grader who is a member of the Green Team, has been cheering for four years. She said she enjoys interacting with

other girls who share her interests. She also enjoys the physicality of the sport.

“I like being able to do stunts and try new things,” she said. “And I love when we go to competitions.”

She’s proud of how well the teams performed this year at their events.

“I think we did great,” she said. “We all worked so hard to prepare for the competition that winning first made all the hard work worth it. … Competition cheer is a lot harder than gameday cheer, and we put so much work into getting ready for our competitions.”

HARTZ PT to award grants

HARTZ Physical Therapy (HARTZ PT) is celebrating its 25th year serving the community in 2025. To commemorate the milestone, the company will award grants to 25 Lancaster County charities throughout 2025. Twenty-four charities will receive $2,500, and one charity will be chosen to receive 100% of the proceeds from the 22nd annual Fall Blast 5K & Kids Color Run held every October, estimated to be $25,000.

Four selected charities will be eligible to receive one of two $2,500 grants each month during 2025. The staff of HARTZ PT, along with the business’s patients and followers on Instagram and Facebook, will play an integral role in the selection of the winners each month. If a charity is not selected during a specific month after the vote, it will return to the selection process for a second chance.

Community members are invited to

nominate charities at www.hartzpt.com/com munity/25th-anniver sary/. To be eligible for consideration for the Fall Blast proceeds, nominations must be received by Friday, Jan. 10.

The $25,000 Fall Blast beneficiary will be found among the monthly $2,500 nominees. The Fall Blast director and committee will select three finalists, which will be required to fill out an application providing specific information, such as financial details. The finalists will make a presentation on Friday, Feb. 7, to the staff members of HARTZ PT, who will then choose the winner.

excited about fitness when comparing how they stack up with different tasks compared to astronauts and how they train,” said Witmer. “Ultimately, this would enhance engagement across all subject levels within our space unit. Also, by connecting (physical education) with real-world careers like astronauts, you provide a multidisciplinary, motivating experience that helps students see the relevance of physical activity in everyday life.”

“Because sixth-graders have already been exposed to digital music creation, they (explored) the sonification of Webb telescope images and (created) music using those sampled sounds,” said music teacher Hollie Mendenhall.

McCart noted that all of the teachers want students to gain a better understanding of what’s out there beyond Earth.

“We hope they will also develop their own natural curiosity and desire to learn and understand the world

Each grade also applied music studies to its galactic unit, with third-graders learning a song about the solar system and then using the planets to create their own rhythmic and melodic patterns. Fourth-graders applied their knowledge of classical music and the planets to drumming, and fifth-graders compared famous pieces of music written about the moon and then used excerpts from each to imagine their own song lyrics.

around them,” she said.

Leighlitner agreed, adding, “We always tell our students that the unified arts are truly all of the subjects combined - math, (English language arts), science, history, etc. This project makes that come to life, and helps their brains create cross-curricular connections that makes the learning ‘stick.’”

And it certainly did stick for the students. The space unit provided fun and education, said fourthgrader Jaidyn Spruill. “I liked drawing the planets,” she remarked. “Mars is my favorite, because it’s red because there’s iron in the soil!”

Zephen Johns enjoyed discovering more about the stars.

“I like learning about how stars make shapes like constellations,” shared the third-grader, and sixthgrader Parker Herman said learning about outer space has broadened his world.

“Learning about space helps us learn about what’s out there,” he said.

Discovering more about the night sky was the best part for third-grader Kade Whitmer. “Space tells us cool things about our Milky Way galaxy,” he commented.

And exploring the giant indoor Starlab was a highlight for sixth-grader Luca Giorgio.

“The planetarium was amazing,” Luca said. “It feels like stars and other space stuff surround you.”

PCA&D to offer free design work to nonprofits

Nonprofit organizations in the central Pennsylvania region are invited to apply to participate in Designathon, hosted by the students at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in downtown Lancaster. The annual 12-hour marathon event provides free professional-level branding and design work to local and regional nonprofits. Designathon will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025.

Organized by PCA&D’s American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Student Chapter, Designathon gives students real-world experience in creating projects for clients under a tight one-day deadline. It is also intended to help students learn that nonprofits have marketing needs in order to be successful and that strong graphic design on well-organized collateral pieces is an important component in successful

communication and marketing plans. Students also experience the value of giving back to the community. Recent work has included website elements, updated logos, brochures, illustrations, and event posters.

During its history at PCA&D, Designathon has helped more than 120 nonprofit organizations and institutions revitalize their branding and community outreach. Each year, the event’s participation attracts dozens of students, alumni, faculty members, and staff members, many of whom return year after year to participate in the community-centered project.

For more information and to apply by Sunday, Jan. 12, visit https://pcad .edu/designathon-2025/. Questions about applications and process may be directed to Maria Hostetter at mhostetter@pcad.edu.
