Mount Joy Minnie Will Offer Her Prediction BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ill we have an early spring? Or will we endure six more weeks of winter? Mount Joy Minnie knows, and she’ll give her answer to these questions on Groundhog Day, Tuesday, Feb. 2. “This year we’re going to go virtual,” said Kerry Meyers, executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce. “Normally, we would hold our Groundhog Day celebration at the town clock in Mount Joy, but we can’t do that this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.” Instead, Minnie will appear on Facebook and will give her prediction at approximately 7:10 a.m. “ We have new handlers for Minnie this year,” remarked Meyers, noting that Minnie doesn’t require a lot of “handling,” since she’s a stuffed animal. “Even though we’ll be doing things online this year, we’ll still do what we have always done, and

“Even though we’ll be doing things online this year, we’ll still do what we have always done, and our handlers will discuss with Minnie whether she’s seen her shadow or not.” This year’s event will still feature a crazy hat contest as in years past. “We would normally judge the hats by applause, but this year, we are asking people to post their pictures on the Facebook event page or email them to me at the Chamber,” Meyers explained. Prizes will be awarded for the

One day a few weeks ago, Pat Paules almost broke down in tears. These were tears of joy, not sadness, as she accepted a donation to benefit the food bank she oversees as part of Mount Joy Helping Services. “We received $5,000 in gift cards from Giant,” she said. “I was not expecting it, and when they presented the gift, I almost cried.” Employees of the Mount Joy Giant Food Store collected money for the gift cards through at-register donations from customers.

best hats, courtesy of event sponsor Keystone Lawn Company. Mount Joy Minnie has been predicting the seasons for many years, Meyers noted. The event even drew the attention of the Wall Street Journal last year when the paper included it in a feature on local Groundhog Day events. “We didn’t want to cancel this year, even though we had to do things a little differently,” Meyers stated. “People really enjoy it. We’re trying to keep things as normal as possible, and this is something we always do, so we wanted to do it again this year. It’s just a fun thing to do.” To view the Mount Joy Minnie Groundhog Day event, readers may visit www.facebook.com /mountjoychamber.

Children Invited To Music Program

Harper Kline enjoys making music at Little Notes at Florin Church of the Brethren.

Little ones are invited to make music at Florin Church of the Brethren during the Little Notes music ministry. The program is held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the second, fourth and fifth Thursdays of the month at the church, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, and is open for children up to kindergarten age and their caregivers. “Little Notes is a program we offer to introduce children to music,” said Jan Chavez, program director. “We’ll get out a variety of musical instruments for the children to play with. I’ll play some sing-along songs. I like to include

songs they know and pepper in some new ones for them to learn.” The program, which is free, also features play time and other activities. “We’ll have parachute time and snack, and I might play a DVD or do a simple craft or coloring page with the children,” Chavez stated. To stay as safe as possible during COVID-19, the program is held in a large space where participants can spread out, and all snacks are individually wrapped. Chavez also sanitizes all instruments between sessions. Chavez started the program two years ago as a way to give back to the church she’s belonged to her whole life and to provide a musical opportunity for preschoolers.

Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, wants to spread love while warming hearts and stomachs. The church will hold a free soup drive-through on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. until noon or until the soup runs out. This is the first time the church will be holding an event featuring free soup but not the first time the church has offered a drive-through format. The organizers were inspired by a free takeout ham dinner offered during the church’s drivethrough Nativity in December, said organizer Kris Gray. “The free ham dinner was so well received that we wanted to

offer another free food event to share the love of Jesus with our community,” Gray noted. “Homemade soup is a great comfort food and perfect for warming up during these cold days.” The event will feature chicken corn noodle soup. “A family in the church makes the soup using an old church recipe,” Gray said. Refrigerated containers of soup will be distributed to anyone who attends the event and will be delivered directly to cars. “You can drive up to the carport at the church to receive your soup,” she explained. “You will not even need to leave your car. Just heat the soup up at home when you are ready to serve it.”

Dayspring Plans Open House Dayspring Christian Academy invites families with soonto-be preschoolers, prekindergartners, and kindergartners to attend an open house on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. at the school, 120 College Ave., Mountville. The kindergarten open house will feature a Winnie the Pooh Valentine’s Day party that will focus on Proverbs 17:17a. Parents will meet with teachers and learn about the Principle Approach, which is a method of thinking and living by God’s truth and which is the method of education used at Dayspring. Michael Myers, headmaster, noted that children learned this way during the Colonial and founding periods in America. Dayspring offers two distinct kindergarten programs. Children begin learning about

a variety of subjects, including science, history, and geography, and they begin reasoning from the Bible, noted Myers. God is viewed as the author of all subjects. Both kindergarten classes use field studies to bring to life what children learn in the classroom. The prekindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who have just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced, and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as

they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them, and they learn to experience the wonder of creation. The kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced at this level. Students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read; many children learn to read before completing kindergarten.

In addition to kindergarten, Dayspring Christian Academy offers preschool programs for children who are 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. These programs offer an introduction to the alphabet as students learn a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with a Bible Character Day complete with costumes. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math lessons are woven together and rooted in God’s Word. Guided free play incorporates principles of selfgovernment, order, and unity. Circle time incorporates songs, the calendar, weather, colors, and Bible

To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus

food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’ food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program. Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points

Floyd Nets 10 in Season Opener Against Elco Pins supplied by Donegal seniors Ober (160), Grillo (172), and Blake (285), propelled Indian momentum, and a sequence of three Ephrata forfeits further separated the teams’ final totals. Ephrata kept pace with the Indians in the early bouts, coming up with two falls of their own and the contest reflected an even 15-15 score before Blake’s bout at 285 gave Donegal the lead (2115) that they would hold on to for the remainder of the match. Donegal freshman Noah Hinkle came up big with a major decision victory, earning four points at 113 to further the Indian cause.

With a later start date than most of the L-L League, the Lady Indians were eager to get their season underway, and though they opened with a pair of losses, they anticipate growth and improvement as the season progresses. Opening night featured a home contest against ELCO on Friday the 15th, and ending in a 55-33, ELCO victory. ELCO jumped ahead early, posting an 11-4 first quarter, and managed to hold the edge for the duration of the contest, despite Donegal regrouping for a strong offensive effort midway through the contest. “Big things will come as we continue to grow into new roles,” encouraged head coach Matthew Warner. Sophomore Sophia Floyd is one of those athletes embracing her role, currently as lead scorer for the Tribe with 10 points in the ELCO game. She continued her efforts the following day in a 51-13 loss to York Suburban where she once again led the offense, this time with eight. Madison Kaley netted six points against the Raiders, Catie Weber added five and Rylee Smith went two-for-two at the line. The team hit another obstacle

in the form of Eastern York and fell to a 68-17 loss on the 20th. Five different Lady Donegal’s chipped in to score, led by six points from Madeline Gohn. “We have a long way to go,” acknowledged Warner anticipating hard work to pay off in the coming weeks. “I am pleased with the progress we have made so far. This is a great group of young ladies we have here at Donegal.”

Donegal’s Rylee Smith drives the baseline on Elco’s Katelyn Rueppel in the Indians’ 55-33, Section Four loss at home on January 15.

Both clubs entered the contest with a pair of wins under their belt, and in a heartbreaking turn for the Indians, the contest went 33-27 to the Bears. Early bouts were full of Donegal success including decision points garnered by Mason Ober (160), Joel Grillo (172), and Ethan Halbleib (189). Garrett Blake cranked it up a notch with a Donegal fall in the 215-pound bout with 31 seconds remaining on the clock, mirrored by a fall from Nicoli Brotzman at 285, putting Donegal up 21-3. The Bears turned things around in the subsequent bouts, chipping away at the Indians lead until the contest was leveled at 27-27 heading into the final bout. In an unfortunate turn of events, an injury resulted in exceeding the recovery time allotted for Donegal, giving the final bout to Elizabethtown by default, and determining the outcome. Rather than dwell on the loss, head coach Nick Evans turned the attention of his grapplers to their next challenge. “We look to overcome the adversity,” Evans simply stated. Prior to the showdown with the Bears, the Indians earned a 43-18 non-league victory over Ephrata the previous weekend.

Junior Khalil Masden continues to have a major impact on the Indian’s games, averaging over 20 points per game, to lead the scoring in a stretch of three tough losses for Donegal. The Indians briefly held the lead in Tuesday’s 59-46 loss to Octorara, posting a 10-9 first quarter. Donegal’s offense was led by Masden’s game-high 18 points and was complemented by 15 from Jaden Fabian. Octorara gathered their momentum in the second quarter and finished the half with a 22-18 advantage and would go on to finish the contest with four athletes netting double digit figures. In a 55-38 loss at ELCO on Friday the 15th, Masden netted 20 including a four-for-four showing at the line. Though the Indians kept pace with the Raiders in a close 13-10 opening quarter, the Raiders went on a 17-6 surge in the second, and after opening the lead never looked back. Adding to the Donegal attack was Luke Yunginger, Joseph Turbedsky, and Dutch Good who each supplied a three-pointer, extending the ELCO defense on the perimeter. Despite their efforts and a 13-point fourth period, the Indians were not able to overcome the deficit. The night before contained a 57-46 homecourt loss to Big Photo by Bob Diller Springs, this time with 19 points Sophia Floyd maneuvers past Elco’s Cassie Johnson during Donefrom Masden, and Fabian gal’s 55-33, Section Four loss to the visiting Raiders on January 15.

Museum Continues STEM Programming Pandemic response programming developed by the North Museum of Nature and Science attained a milestone shortly before Christmas, exceeding a reach of more than one million households. This program is designed to address the emerging educational needs which students, parents, and

The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced the Students of the Month for December. The honorees are Milligan Straub and Richard Fitts. Honorees are recognized by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during the club’s monthly luncheon meeting. Milligan is the daughter of Christopher and Traci Straub of Maytown. Milli’s excellence in academics has led to her two-year membership in National Honor Society, where she serves as secretary; her three-year membership in National Art Honor Society, where she serves as co-president; and her two-year membership in National Math Honor Society. Additionally, she has served as a class officer throughout high school. She has performed in plays and musicals with Donegal Performing Arts since ninth grade and has also been a member of the German Club throughout high school. She previously participated in the GAPP exchange as a junior, Senator for a Day as a sophomore, track and field in her freshman year, and tennis in her freshman and sophomore years. Outside of school, Milli attends Trinity Lutheran Church and is active with its youth group. She has attended approximately five dance classes a week since ninth grade and teaches beginner ballet classes. She also taught ESL ballet club at Price Elementary School. Her plans after graduation include attending college, where she plans to study foreign languages. She would eventually like to teach English in Germany. Richard is the son of Jeffrey Fitts and Alison Hoke-Fitts of Mount Joy. Throughout high school, he has participated in Donegal Performing Arts, Rhythm Singers, and choir. He has been a Link Crew leader for two years, he was a part of the cross-country team in ninth grade, and he was on the tennis team in 10th grade. Outside of school, Ricky is involved in Trinity Lutheran Church’s youth group, where he has helped with many community service activities, such as meal packing and sorting items for clothing drives. Ricky has been in local theater productions with Susquehanna Stage Company, Hershey Area Playhouse, and Popovsky Performing Arts. After graduation, Ricky plans to attend a four-year college to study graphic design.

The VFW Auxiliary has announced a new contest, Get Excited for the Red, White and Blue. Youths ages 6 to 16 are invited to participate by making a video of themselves singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Youths may sing in the musical style of their choice, but they may not change the lyrics. State winners’ entries will advance to the national headquarters by Wednesday, May 5. At the national level, winners in each of the 10 program divisions will receive gift cards. One national winner will receive a gift card for a greater amount, and this student will be announced and his or her video performance will be featured at the National Convention 2021 in Baltimore. Participants may submit entries to youth activities chairman Gwen Avers by Wednesday, March 31, via DVD, flash drive, or an online perform such as YouTube or Vimeo. Youths may also give their entries to their school office, and an Auxiliary member will stop by local schools on Thursday, April 1, to pick up the entries. For the entry form and more details, readers may visit www.vfwauxiliary.org/resources and scroll down to “Youth Activities.” Questions may be directed to Avers at flavers@comcast.net or 717-419-8217.
