HRelive the ’90s at The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy

ead back to the ’90s for a tasty way to raise funds for the community and have fun at the same time. The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy, co-hosted by Voyage Mount Joy and YAH Brew Mount Joy, will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. The beer fest will take place along Main Street in Mount Joy, from Market Street to Marietta Avenue.

“We were tossing around ideas for fundraisers, and we knew we wanted to do something unique,” recalled Allory Melhorn, president of Voyage Mount Joy. “We are partnering with Justin Hoak of YAH Brew, and we came up with the idea of a brewfest.”

The festival will feature approximately 50 breweries from the local area and well beyond.

“We currently have 20 confirmed breweries, and they are from all across the country,” Melhorn said. “We also have one or two coming from Canada, so this is a mix of local, state, national and international participants.”

A variety of food vendors will set up along Main Street, and local band No Reply will offer live music during the event.

“They will be playing ’90s music, and since the whole brewfest is ‘90s-themed, we encourage people to dress for the decade,” Melhorn said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Voyage Mount Joy and Donegal Athletic Club (DAC). Voyage Mount Joy is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the town through community events and resources. DAC is an

organization with a mission to improve the experience of Donegal student-athletes, marching band members, families and alumni.

Melhorn encourages people to get tickets early for the brewfest, which he anticipates will be a popular event.

“If you are a beer connoisseur, you definitely want to come to this,” Melhorn said. “We are going to have beers people most likely haven’t tried before.”

The street will be closed to traffic during the duration of the event. Early bird pricing will be available for tickets through

Friday, Jan. 31. After that date, general admission tickets and VIP tickets, which include early admission from 1 to 2 p.m., will be for sale. General admission tickets will admit people from 2 to 5 p.m. Designated driver tickets will be free.

The event is for people age 21 and older. On-site admission and entry point will be at Delta Street, across from the Mount Joy borough office.

In late December, members of the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) and Maytown Boy Scout Troop 53 came together to assist the Luke Brubaker family of Mount Joy with an environmental service project. The effort focused on removing protective tubing and stakes from trees and shrubs planted along Donegal Creek and Charles Run in East Donegal Township.

The plantings, which date back about 12 years, were initially part of a project led by Donegal High School’s Experiential Education Program (DEEP). Under the guidance of former teacher David Eichler, DEEP students helped plant the trees as seedlings along the waterway.

Eichler, who joined the volunteer effort, expressed

his satisfaction at seeing the success of the plantings: “It’s very gratifying to see the plantings that my DEEP students performed back then and

The nonprofit organization provides highly trained service dogs for clients throughout Lancaster County and its surrounding areas, and each UDS dog is equipped with a special skillset

to meet its owner’s needs.

In early January, an office on the second floor of UDS’ main building was temporarily converted into a kennel for a litter of young golden Labs. The six puppies were less than 3 months old and, like all new arrivals at UDS, adorable but unruly. After a 22-month training program, each dog will be obedient enough to accomplish tasks such as opening a door and picking up a TV remote from the floor. Outside the room of puppies, UDS

The project site is located on land owned by Brubaker Farms LLC, which enrolled in the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). CREP offers farmers and landowners incentives to implement conservation practices on environmentally sensitive lands, improving water and land quality. The plantings of trees, shrubs and native grasses help reduce erosion, chemical runoff and sedimentation, benefiting local ecosystems and ultimately protecting the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay.

“We’ve propped back up several tubes over the years, but as farmers, we’re too busy to remove several hundred tubes and are extremely appreciative of the Maytown Boy Scouts and members of the DFCA for coming out today,” said Tony Brubaker, who operates Brubaker Farms.

Upon a Mattress” slated

Students from the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) Music, Worship and Performing Arts Department will present their winter musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” beginning Friday, Jan. 31. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 1 and 8, in Good Shepherd Chapel on LBC’s campus at 901 Eden Road.

An adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1835 fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea,” the

musical has endured on stages of all kinds for 65 years. The comedy first opened off-Broadway in 1959 and moved to Broadway the following year, starring Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred, played at LBC by Faith Willis. “Once Upon a Mattress” spins a tale of a kingdom where finding a true princess proves to be more challenging than expected.

There is a discount for students of all ages. To purchase tickets, visit www.lbc.edu/events.

“Over the Christmas break, Dr. Eichler arranged for my Boy Scout Troop 53 and me to help the DFCA remove tree tubes at the Brubaker farm,” he said. “The tree tubes were installed about 10 years ago by Donegal High School students in the DEEP class to keep animals from eating the bark off of the saplings. It was interesting to learn about water management in a real-world setting instead of just in a classroom. My hope is like Dr. Eichler’s DEEP class from the past, that this activity can occur with a science class I’m in, too.”

DFCA members at the event included president Charlie Hower, Dan VanBu-

“It was a great experience for both groups,” Hower remarked. “The Brubakers supplied lunch and explained how they farm. They are doing a lot for the environment.”

Mike Brubaker also shared additional sustainability efforts at Brubaker Farms. The family has transitioned to no-till farming methods to prevent soil erosion and has incorporated renewable energy practices, such as capturing methane gas from cow manure and using solar panels to generate electricity for nearly 300 homes.

“Conservation and alternative energy is something we’ve been working on and using for years now,” Brubaker shared.

Make memories at a Daddy/Daughter Dance

Dads or father figures can treat the young ladies in their life to a night on the town when GEARS holds its annual Daddy/ Daughter Dance. The dance will be held on Friday, Feb. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Salon 1 at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown.

“Each year, countless families eagerly anticipate this magical event,” said Erin Thomas, GEARS special events coordinator.

“GEARS is dedicated to offering a diverse array of exceptional family bonding experiences, and the Daddy/Daughter Dance stands out as one of our most popular and well-attended celebrations. This event provides a unique opportunity to witness the heartwarming connection between fathers and daughters as they create lasting memories together.”

Thomas noted that the event is not just for dads.

“If Dad’s not available, (girls) are welcome to bring any important male in their lives, like a grandfather or older brother,” Thomas said. “Some families with multiple daughters bring their grandfathers too so each daughter has a date.”

The dance is open to people of all ages, and attendees in the past have been as young as 1 year old. Formal attire is encouraged but not required for the event.

“We have more than just dancing planned for the event, so there is something for everyone,” Thomas commented, noting that Occasions Disc Jockeys will provide music and Princess Rapunzel and Flynn Rider will make a special guest appearance. Girls can also enjoy a professional photo by Youth Sports Photo, face painting, Valentine’s Day crafts, “Minute to Win It”-style games and light refreshments.

“It’s a magical night of bonding fun,” Thomas

shared. “The venue creates an elegant ambiance, which then helps the participants feel like royalty for a night.”

GEARS has hosted the Daddy/Daughter Dance for 15 years.

“Every year, the attendance grows,” Thomas said. “It has been such a pleasure to watch families return to the event every year.”

GEARS offers year-round events like the dance as part of its mission to connect with the community. There is a charge for admission to the event, and preregistration is required for the event. To register, visit www.getintogears .org or call 717-367-0355. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 7.

volunteer Linda Rineer worked with CJ, a black Lab that is almost ready to be paired with a client. While a chorus of yelping and whining echoed from the temporary kennel, Rineer praised and encouraged CJ as he pulled a walker and opened doors on command.

“The key to successfully training a dog is food, food and more food,” said Rineer, a resident of the Buck who frequently travels to UDS’ facility to assist with training. “A lot of people think (service dogs) are working, but for them, it’s like playing ball all day.”

UDS service dogs specialize in different areas, and each canine is matched with a job that complements its personality traits and strengths. Some dogs may have a calming presence that

can help anxious children feel more comfortable in school, and others are perceptive enough to recognize the early signs of a traumatic flashback and rush to their owners’ side. Rineer said the fourth UDS dog she helped train was able to fetch bottles of water from the refrigerator for a client with mobility restrictions. The dog was even able to take the empty bottles to the recycling bin after the owner was finished.

In recent years, UDS has broadened its service area to include clients within five hours of Lancaster County. The number of local school districts requesting a service dog has steadily increased as well, and UDS dogs currently serve nearly every school district in the county. Jennifer King, a member of the UDS

service dog ambassador team, said many teachers testify that service dogs have reached students in ways no school staff member was able. “It’s the power of a wagging tail and a wet nose,” King said.

UDS relies on sponsorships and donations from the community to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog requires an investment upward of $25,000 to cover the cost of coaching and food during the 22-month training period, and financial support from individuals and businesses allows UDS to lessen the cost of acquiring a dog for clients.

UDS will hold its annual bingo fundraiser on Sunday, March 9, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The organization is always

CAPLC promotes economic opportunity for all

There are a great many Lancaster County nonprofits seeking to fulfill basic needs. But there’s so much more to life than bare necessities.

Not only does Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAPLC) want its clients to survive, but the nonprofit also wants them to thrive.

“There are folks in our community who are living with low incomes,” said Kristy Aurand, who’s been

CAPLC’s chief development officer for eight years. “When any one group of people do better, we all do better. Every person has value, and we’re all members of the same community. We get to do this work, and we hope that everyone sees this work as important, not just the people receiving our services. Lancaster County is a strong community, but we know that not everyone is benefiting from the growth and development. It’s all of our responsibilities to be a part of that.”

Headquartered at 601 S. Queen St., Lancaster, CAPLC operates under the motto of “People. Empowered.” The organization serves its clients through 10 distinct programs in four focus areas - early education, health and nutrition, household stability and safety empowerment. With satellite offices at 560 S. Reading Road, Ephrata, and 400 Chestnut St., Columbia, CAPLC offers individuals services through its Thrive to Five program, WIC (Women, Infants and Children), nutrition education, senior centers, food distribution, utility assistance, Early Learning Resource Center, RISE (Resilient. Inspired. Strong. Empowered.), Crispus Attucks Community Center and domestic violence services.

“I think we do have a unique opportunity,” said Aurand. “Each of these 10 programs has its own whys and whats. For the

participants, the net that’s cast is pretty wide. If people are coming to us for one service, they might have a need for another service. We can do a lot of it here, but it’s not exhaustive. Our employees also know what else is out there.”

According to an American Community Survey, the poverty rate in Lancaster County was 8.2% in 2023, meaning 44,195 Lancaster County residents were living below the federal poverty level. In that same year, CAPLC served 45,609 individuals, almost entirely from Lancaster County, and distributed over 880,000 pounds of food to local pantries.

“These are folks who, for whatever reason, find themselves living with low incomes,” said Aurand.

“Most of our programs are income qualifying; some are not. We want to get folks to thriving. We want to see that the resources we are providing are making a difference and lifting their families. It all comes back to economics. These resources are really adding to a person’s economic portfolio. We all have goals for our families.”

The operation of CAPLC relies on the work of 300 employees, more than 33,000 volunteer hours annually and about 300 local partnerships. CAPLC is funded through the federal community services block grant program, as well as private and business donations.

“Collaboration is so important,” said Aurand. “It’s one of the founding blocks of community action. We can’t do it all. The collaboration is really, really deep and for the full benefit of the community.”

“I truly believe that the best part of it is being able to work with a group of people every day who are committed to moving the mission forward,” Aurand added. “Even though our roles may be different, that’s what we’re all working toward.”

One of more than 1,000 branches nationally, Com-

“Gardens of Tomorrow.”

The fee includes transportation, guide services by Weigel, and admission to the flower show. The trip will depart from Clearview Lanes, 1990 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 10 a.m. and return at 8:30 p.m.

A trip to Washington, D.C., will be held on Thursday, April 10. A two-hour lunch cruise on the Odyssey will offer participants an opportunity to take in the views of the city and the

cherry blossoms. Food will be available. After the cruise, attendees will board a motor coach for a private, guided tour of the city’s highlights. The trip will depart from Clearview Lanes at 8:15 a.m. and return 7:30 p.m.

Trips to New York City will be held on Saturdays, March 15 and May 10. Both will depart from East High Street Elementary School, 800 E. High St., Elizabethtown, at 6:45 a.m. with a return time of 11:30 p.m.

munity Action Partnership was founded in Lancaster County in 1966. The national program was established by the Economic Opportunity Act partly through the stated initiative, “It is the policy of the United States to eliminate the paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty in this nation.”

“In the 1960s, the Lyndon Johnson administration launched the war on poverty,” said Aurand. “That’s what community action grew out of. It came from the idea that poverty exists in the midst of plenty.”

Program to focus on local inventor

The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County will kick off its 2025 Speaker Series on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the historic Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House, 123 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The program, “The Preservation Palette: Colors of Our Past,” will feature Gwendolyn Ruth Dickinson, granddaughter of William Chester Ruth. Through memorabilia, photographs, and her own experiences, Dickinson will share her grandfather’s story. Attendees will also view a short documentary film showcasing accounts from farmers, patrons, and neighbors who relied on Ruth’s machine shop to keep their farms and businesses thriving. Ruth was an African

American machinist, inventor, and business owner from Pennsylvania. Born in 1882 in Ercildoun to parents who overcame slavery, Ruth developed a passion for machinery early on, leading him to establish Ruth’s Ironworks Shop in Gap in 1922. Over his career, he secured more than 50 patents for agricultural innovations, including the combination baler feeder and a self-lifting farm elevator, significantly enhancing farming efficiency. Beyond his mechanical contributions, Ruth was a respected community leader and lay minister, dedicating his life to both technological advancement and spiritual guidance.

The program is available by donation. Space is limited to 50 attendees, and reservations are available at https://tinyurl.com/ HPTWilliamChesterRuth.
