Oh, the fun you will have!

Oh, the whimsy! Oh, the fun!

It’s a Seussian adventure for everyone!

Step right up, don’t delay!

“Celebrate Seuss” is on its way!

You’re invited to explore whimsy and fun throughout the Milanof-Schock Library at “Celebrate Seuss: An Adventure at the Library.” The event will be held at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Friday, Feb. 28. The festivities will run from 5 to 7 p.m. with staggered entry times to allow plenty of room for families to explore all of the program’s activities.

“Our friends begin in the program room where they watch a short video and pick up their supplies for the journey,” explained Jan Betty, director of children and youth at the library, who is better known as “Miss Jan.”

“Then they travel throughout the library, traveling from station to station doing the activity at each one and gathering their prize.”

People can expect to run into some familiar faces along the way.

“We’ll have some visiting Seuss characters such as Fox in Socks and Horton the Elephant,” Miss Jan said. “Of course, the Cat in the Hat will be there as will Gertrude McFuzz. Thing 1 and Thing 2 will help visitors start their journey. And there might even be a visit from the Grinch.”

The library has been holding the Seuss program for years, and it always draws a large crowd.

“We love our community, and organizing an event like this is a way we can show it,” Miss Jan said. “We also love to see families come out and spend time together, doing something fun.”

She emphasized that the event

would not be possible without support from a group of people.

“There are a whole bunch of volunteers who help make this event even more special,” she said. “Volunteers from the library Friends group and the library, Norlanco-Rheems Kiwanis Club, Key Club, Builders Club and some library staff are some of the many hands that help make this event work.”

Miss Jan hopes people who have come to “Celebrate Seuss” in the past will return this year, along with new people experiencing the event for the first time.

“This is a very fun event for families to do together,” she said, “and a great way to spend a Friday night!”

Stop by the library to purchase tickets for “Celebrate Seuss.” For more information, visit https:// mslibrary.org.

Celebrate the history and heritage of Lancaster County - and Marietta specifically - at the next installment of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County’s speaker series, “The Preservation Palette: Colors of Our Past.”

The presentation, “Public History and the Founding Families of Marietta,” will be held on Wednesday, March 12, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The program will be held in the Sehner -Ellicott-von Hess House, 123 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

The evening will feature a journey through local history accompanied by heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Eric Schubert, a public historian and forensic genetic genealogist, will present the program.

A graduate student at Millersville University, Schubert has gained national attention for

his research expertise. As a student at Elizabethtown College, he collaborated with professor Jean-Paul Benowitz on a variety of public history projects.

“During this presentation, the stories behind Marietta’s founding families and influential business leaders, including the Duffys, Mehaffeys, Groshes, Hiestands, Stibgens and Spanglers will be discussed,”

Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how some people conduct themselves, gain knowledge, speak and listen and relate to others. It’s a disorder that we continue to learn about and one that might be more prevalent than first realized.

NeurAbilities Healthcare of Lancaster approaches autism from both clinical and behavioral perspectives. Two of the

organization’s main goals are to enhance the lives of people and families affected by the disorder and to integrate those individuals into society.

“People are often coming to us because they are struggling to support their family members,” said Adriana Neumann, NeurAbilities’ senior director for applied behavior analysis clinical services. “There’s something they’re struggling to manage. They want their child to learn, to make progress, to navigate the world. Every family is different.

Miss Jan invites people to “Celebrate Seuss: An Adventure at the Library.”

A musical step back in time

Take a step back in time and make plans to visit the second annual Antique Phonograph Demonstration and Show. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook, 58 Church Road, Manheim. It will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with demonstrations at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and a ragtime concert beginning at 3 p.m.

“The idea for the show came from our shared passion for the phonograph hobby and Nick’s talent for organizing events,” said Shawn Patrick, who is co-hosting the event with Nick Sieber. “We are also both members of the Antique Phonograph Society but had no local social outlet for members to get together to share their passion for the hobby.” The pair hopes that holding events like this will increase interest in membership to the society and introduce the hobby to a new generation.

As Sieber explained, a phonograph is the instrument used to play back recorded sound inscribed on a record. “Most folks today are familiar with a 33 1/3 rpm record, whereas our hobby mainly focuses on the era of cylinder records and 78 rpm records,” he shared. “Cylinder record production largely ended by the late 1920s, whereas 78s remained popular into the early 1950s.”

Two renowned speakers - Chad Shapiro and Wyatt Markus - will present at the event.

“Chad is an incredibly knowledgeable collector and historian of Thomas Edison, who has amassed a collection of Edison artifacts that would make any museum envious,” Patrick commented. “His interest in Edison also led to him collecting many items from the earliest days of electricity, including a worldclass collection of early light bulbs going back to the 1870s.”

Shapiro will share his knowledge of Edison and his contributions to perfecting the earliest phonographs, Patrick said.

“He will also be demonstrating an extremely rare, original Thomas Edison Tinfoil phonograph,” Patrick remarked. “Guests will hear the first machine to ever reproduce the human voice. It was the birth of recorded sound as we know it today.”

Markus specializes in reproducers or soundboxes, and he has also mastered recording onto wax cylinder records the way it was done in the 1890s, Patrick shared. “Wyatt will be demonstrating his talent by making a live recording onto a wax cylinder record,” he noted. “This is something that is rarely seen by

the general public and is a mustsee for all who have an interest in early sound reproduction.”

The phonograph show will also feature a live concert by Miss Maybell and Charlie Judkins.

“Miss Maybell and Charlie Judkins have played key roles in preserving music from the ragtime era and are proudly undertaking a project to digitally perform and record songs that may have never been recorded when originally released,” Sieber said. “This is the first time some of these songs have ever been recorded since being published 120-plus years ago.”

Maybell sings and plays several string instruments, while Charlie plays piano.

Audiences can expect to hear songs ranging from early jazz, blues and ragtime to early country-style music.

Visitors to the phonograph show are encouraged to bring records, phonographs or related pieces to swap or sell. A “swap meet” area will be set up, and, prior to the event, people who are interested in reserving a space should call Sieber at 717-598-8421 or Patrick at 717-490-0241. Markus will sell blank cylinder records for people to make their own home recordings, and Bob Barnett of the Musical Box Society will have a table of information.

Coffee and pastries will be available for purchase throughout the day, and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will feature a sandwich, chips, a dessert and a drink. Complimentary fruit and vegetable platters will also be available. Food proceeds will be used to support future phonograph shows.

Miss Maybell (right) and Charlie Judkins
The Antique Phonograph Demonstration and Show will feature a variety of old-time musical equipment.

Schubert shared. “These movers and shakers had extensive personal stories and business endeavors that contributed to the economic development of Front Street, the Susquehanna River and the Pennsylvania Canal in the 19th century.”

He noted that not only is the topic an important part of Marietta’s history, but now is also the perfect time to share more with the community as students of the Elizabethtown College Public Heritage Studies Program are currently conducting historical research.

Schubert said people who attend the program can expect to learn more about the role Marietta played in the region’s past.

“Marietta has a vast history that is tied to other parts of Lancaster County, larger families and Pennsylvania as a whole,” he stated. “Some of these stories, personal narratives and connections have not been shared often publicly, and they offer fascinating insight into 19th-century Marietta and Lancaster County. Fresh research by Public Heritage Studies students has continued to bring up new finds. Find out if your family name or relatives are connected!”

The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County is dedicated to preserving the county’s historic sites and architecture through

education and advocacy. As a nonprofit, the Trust collaborates with individuals, businesses and government agencies to protect the integrity of local historic properties. Relying on membership, events and grants for support, the organization minimizes costs by using volunteers. Its mission is to ensure Lancaster’s architectural heritage remains a vital part of the community for future generations.

Schubert’s program will be held in the historic Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House, which serves as the headquarters for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The 18th-century Georgian-style home, built in 1780, was once home to Andrew Ellicott, who taught Meriwether Lewis navigation techniques used for the Lewis and Clark expedition of the western territories.

Tickets are limited for the presentation. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/4hHFNuc.

Both Patrick and Sieber are members of the Antique Phonograph Society, a worldwide organization of people with a common passion for the preservation of the medium. They hope people will come out for a fun day focused on the past.

“We would encourage anyone who enjoys history to attend,” Patrick said. “You will see demon-

strations that are rarely ever seen... You will be hearing history exactly the way people heard it from the 1870s to about 1930.”

Added Sieber, “We highly recommend this show to anyone in the community who is a history buff, jazz music enthusiast or someone who is simply looking for a unique way to spend a Saturday

afternoon. We are an inviting group of collectors and are always happy to share our passion for antique phonographs and music with anyone interested.”

While admission to the event is free, donations are suggested to cover the cost of the ragtime concert. For more information, visit www.antiquephono.org.

Autism

from pg 1

Every person is different. Our job is not to change individuals. Our job is to remove barriers and help them manage.”

Established in Lancaster in 2022, NeurAbilities Healthcare is a relative newcomer to the local autism treatment scene. NeurAbilities Healthcare, which is located at 1858 Charter Lane, Suite 201, Lancaster, serves its clients through a community-based approach and on a one-on-one basis.

ease Control and Prevention, about one in 36 kids in the United States has ASD.

“We provide community-based services,” said Neumann. “We look at what individuals need. We do services in our clinic, in homes and in schools. It’s anybody with challenges impacting their abilities to function. Those are the people who are coming to us for our services.”

Backed by a private equity firm, NeurAbilities Healthcare is a self-sufficient private practice. Some of the services provided by NeurAbilities Healthcare are covered by Medicaid or health insurance.

“We want to provide services with excellence,” said Neumann. “Ultimately, we support largely the autism community, people with an ASD diagnosis. You have a lot of individuals who are experiencing different challenges. We like to focus on abilities. We’re supporting patients. We’re supporting learners. We try to capitalize on people’s strengths and focus on what they can do to overcome those challenges. We like to see every individual for who they are.”

“We have individuals who come in who have certain skill deficits in communication, in patterns of behavior, in social interaction,” said Neumann. “We also support individuals who engage in challenging behaviors. When someone is engaging in a behavior, there’s a reason for that. We want to be able to teach a different skill. We’re focused on anything that supports independence.”

The Lancaster office of NeurAbilities Healthcare is set up to be a colorful, warm, inviting space filled with toys and pictures that learners can relate to. More than 10 staff members operate the office, including three certified clinicians.

“In Lancaster, or anywhere you go, there are people who don’t know what autism is,” said Neumann. “The field itself is growing, and there’s always a need for autism services. As we’re working to grow the Lancaster clinic, we want to enhance community engagement. There will be a push in the community to know what autism is and what NeurAbilities does. Hopefully, we’ll be able to improve awareness around that.”

Currently, NeurAbilities Healthcare is serving about 15 local learners, mostly children under the age of 9 from Lancaster County. According to the Centers for Dis -

“There are other agencies that provide similar community-based skills,” Neumann added. “Some agencies don’t have clinics - they go into schools and homes - and some only have clinics. But it seems to me that there’s always a need.”

NeurAbilities Healthcare operates a total of three diagnostic centers and 14 applied behavior analysis clinics in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

“We’ve got improved insight into what autism is, and we have more doctors who understand what it is,” said Neumann. “There are more diagnoses. The question we are asking is, ‘What is causing this?’ There has been research into it, but there’s not a hard answer.”
