atisfy your sweet tooth while supporting Mount Joy businesses during the Chocolate Walk and Wine Tasting from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27. “People will purchase tickets and then come to the Main Street Mount Joy office to pick up an empty box ,” ex plained Dave Schell, executive director of Main Street Mount Joy. The office is located at 55 E. Main St. With their box, Chocolate Walk attendees will receive a map of locations that are participating in the event. “They can go and get a piece of chocolate per location, and some places will also have wine tastings,” Schell noted. “We are asking businesses to offer handmade chocolate. We’re looking to give out homemade or high-end purchased chocolates.” Local wineries will be offering samples at some businesses as well. Participants who want to sample
S
wine must be at least 21 years of age and must show ID at each location, Schell said. Tickets to the event will be sold online through Main Street Mount Joy’s website and Facebook page, and tickets are limited. “We want to keep it to a limited number to encourage social distancing,” Schell explained.
“It’s a low-cost way to come out, have some fun, introduce yourself to a lot of different people and check out different places in downtown Mount Joy.” The walk has been held for more than 15 years and benefits Main Street Mount Joy. “The proceeds help us run our organization and help promote the downtown area,” Schell stated. “We also do it every year as a nice option to bring people outside in the winter and into our stores.”
Jennifer Anteau, owner of Made With Love Not Gluten Bakery, entices shoppers to her business for the Chocolate Walk and Wine Tasting to benefit Main Street Mount Joy.

said Jan Betty, director of children and youth. “We came up with this fun way to mark his birthday.” The event will feature a walk-through of the library with opportunities to visit different activity stations. “ We’re doing our best to make all of them hands-off,” Betty noted. “We’ll have people travel in family groups, so when you buy your ticket, you’ll reserve a certain time

to make sure we don’t have too many people in the library at once.” In addition to the activity stations, the event will include costume characters such as the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, Thing 1 and Thing 2, Gertrude McFuzz and the Fox from “Fox in Socks.” “People are encouraged to bring their cameras or take pictures with their phones,” Betty stated. “ We’ll have games, activities and prizes, plus a goodie bag for each child.” Participants will also have the opportunity to enter to win a Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant gift card. The library’s Dr. Seuss celebration, which has been held for more than 30 years, has always been very popular. “You need to come into the library to purchase your tickets, and in the past, we’ve sold out,” Betty said. Ticket sales began on Feb. 8. Proceeds from the event help fund children’s programs at the library, Betty noted, adding, “It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s fun for the whole family.” Although the event had to look a little different this year, it was still important to the library staff that it happened in some form or another. “ We are all about our patrons, and we’ll do anything we can to provide them with activities and reasons to get out of the house,” Betty stated. “We want them back in the library when they feel comfortable. We want them to know we’re still here for them.”

The coffee is sourced and roasted by a long established roaster in Lancaster County and one of the oldest in Pennsylvania, which is still locally owned and operated in the county. The coffee company was one of the first to be Fair Trade Certified and Fair Trade Organic in the area. Little Dippers uses one of its organic blends of espresso beans that are carefully roasted for all of its regular and decaf beverages. Little Dippers also offers a wide range of frappés that can be made with or without espresso, so it is perfect for those who want a little treat without the caffeine. There is also a frozen hot chocolate that is perfect for children or for the young at heart. More than 20 flavor shots are available to be used in any combination in all of the beverages from lattes to Americanos to frappés. Also offered are a few sugar-free flavors and a vegan chocolate syrup. Little Dippers provides nondairy alternatives, including almond, oat and soy, at no extra charge. Muffins and fresh-baked Amish doughnuts from Lancaster are served daily.

On Jan. 27, a devastating fire ripped through Christine and Jeffrey Polynone’s house at 35 Cider Press Road in Manheim. Although the couple managed to escape, the house was destroyed. Now, their daughter Michelle Levengood is organizing a fundraiser to help the couple rebuild and recover. “I grew up in that house,” said Levengood, who has three siblings. “It was a total loss. They were able to get out with the dog, but one of their cats died in the fire. The other was seriously burned and is in the care of W hite Oaks Veterinary Hospital.” The Polynones are lifelong residents of the Manheim area. They did not have insurance on their home. “My mother tried to get homeowner’s insurance, but they wouldn’t cover her because of the heating source in the home,” Levengood explained. “She also

Club members are boys and girls who were 8 to 18 years of age before Jan. 1. The meeting will include presentations about 4-H and the club, a virtual activity/game available via Kahoot, information about projects offered this year, and details about how to participate in and register for the club. The club will meet five additional times by Zoom on Mondays, April 5, May 3, June 7, July 12, and Aug. 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. During the virtual gatherings, club members will participate in business meetings run by member-elected club officers, social activities, a service project, a talent and presentation night, and end-of-year recognition. Families should request additional details, which will include the Zoom link for the March 1 meeting and specific project details, before the meeting by emailing volunteer club organizational leader Katina Musser at katmusser @comcast.net. Headquartered in Middletown, Friends In Action Intl. has spent more than 25 years assisting missionaries in remote locations with infrastructure projects that help the Gospel reach indigenous people groups. The organization is seeking additional volunteer staff and other volunteers in multiple areas. Open positions include human resource director; communication assistant; missionary partners to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and West Africa; Spanish-speaking liaison to Bolivia work teams; work team leaders to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia; and full-time shipping personnel. Currently, FIA is at work in six countries on 10 projects. From water projects in West Africa and Vanuatu to hurricane-rebuilding efforts in Nicaragua and Vanuatu, FIA serves close to a quarter of a million people each year. In 2020, the organization provided construction assistance to over 1,200 people in Vanuatu and Nicaragua. In addition, the nonprofit sent medical or food/water provisions to close to 8,000 people from Bolivia, Moldova, West Africa, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu. More than 225,000 people had a chance to hear the Gospel, many of them for the first time, through the organization’s outreaches. Over 80% of FIA’s headquarters’ staff are volunteer or privately funded so more donated
dollars can go directly to projects and indigenous villagers. Many positions can be completed remotely or in person. Interested readers may send their resumes to fia-usa@fiaintl.org or administrators can arrange for further discussion at 717-546-0208.

problem. For the month of February, the organization is holding its annual food drive to benefit local food banks. Donations will be accepted at the Elizabethtown EMS station, 380 W. Bainbridge St., or at the Manheim EMS station, 60 W. Colebrook St. “Our first food drive was in February of 2015,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager. “The February food drive, like many of our other outreach initiatives, is an opportunity to connect with individuals in the communities that we serve in hopes that we can impact individual health and community health.” Northwest EMS serves 12 townships and three boroughs, covering more than 200 square miles of response area in Lancaster, Dauphin and Lebanon counties. The organization operates from stations in Elizabethtown, Maytown, Manheim and Brickerville. “(Food drive) donations are delivered to the three food banks geographically located within our primary response district - specifically, the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, the East Donegal/Conoy (Christian) Food Bank and the Manheim Central Food (Pantry),” Shenk explained. She noted that the food drive

allows people the flexibility to donate items on their own schedule. “Most people would happily support their community food banks but find it difficult to coordinate delivery of items on the schedule the food banks might have for receiving donations,” Shenk stated. “By hosting a monthlong event and accepting donations at our stations, we make it easy for everyone. Since we are a 24hour department, simply bring your donations to us and we will take care of everything else.” The collection runs through Sunday, Feb. 28. “Beginning on Monday, March 1, all of the donations will be gathered in
one location and sorted for delivery,” she said. “All three food banks will receive the donations during the week of March 1, according to when they have volunteers to accept the donations.” Shenk encourages anyone to make donations, adding that people should avoid donating outdated food or food that will expire within the first few days of March. “If someone wanted to contribute perishable items, they need to coordinate that with me so that I can ensure proper handling of that item,” she noted. Donegal Matmen Named Section Two Co-Champs
BY LEAH SINTIC
In a grueling culmination of a season like no other, the Donegal grapplers fought their way to the top of Section Two and claimed a piece of the Section title, named co-champions alongside the Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers. In a Section Two clash against Garden Spot on February 9th, the Indians powered past the Spartans to a 35-21 triumph, holding off the defending champs, who also had their sights set on the Section title. Heading into the final evening of league competition, Donegal, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Garden Spot were locked in a three-way tie in the Section Two race, with everything riding on the outcomes of Tuesday’s showdowns. While Donegal and Garden Spot were battling it out in New Holland, the L-S Pioneers were fending off Manheim Central (51-21) to earn their share of the title.
After the dust settled, and Donegal had handed the Spartans their second loss of the season, only the Indians and Pioneers remained to share the title, both sporting 6-1 league records. For Donegal, the title win signifies their first time as Section champs since their 2012 season in which they clinched the Section Three honor. “It was a big night, a complete team effort,” celebrated head coach Nick Evans. “All of our young guys stepped up. Overall, our team took on the mentality of our two captains, Garrett Blake and Mason Ober. They lead by example daily and were always upbeat and positive.” In the must-win battle against the Spartans, Donegal gave up a first-bout forfeit before dominating the next seven matchups, which included falls from John Holmes at 160 and Garrett Blake at 215, and gave the Indians a 29-6 edge with five bouts remaining.
The seven-bout run opened with Landen Baughman’s performance at 138 pounds, winning three points by decision. Silas Mumper (145), Andrew Small (152), and Joel Grillo (189) followed suit with decision wins, and Mason Ober (172) secured five points with a technical fall. While the Spartans tried to regain their footing with a pair of back-to-back pins at 285 and 106, Noah Hinkel (113) and Landon Keller (120) pulled momentum back toward Donegal with their subsequent decision wins. In the days leading up to that crucial night, the Indians experienced a 40-26 nonleague setback at Solanco on February 6th, and one day earlier they overcame Manheim Central for a resounding 48-18 league triumph. In the loss to the Section One Mules, Donegal picked up points in a pair of pins supplied by Blake (215) and Nicholai Brotzman (285), as well as Ober’s technical fall at 160. While hosting Manheim Central the previous evening, a collection of four falls supplied by Hinkel (113), Keller (120), Ober (160), and Grillo (172), set the tone for the landslide win. The whirlwind final week concludes the Indians regular season campaign at 6-1 in league competition, and 12-3 overall as they
prepare to showcase their talent at the 2021 League Championships slated for February 13th at Manheim Township. SWIMMING Even though Donegal does not outfit a full swim team, several individual athletes were able to compete in the L-L League Championship on February 5th and 6th at Wilson High School. The hardworking group made quite the impression-and brought home quite the collection of hardware. The two-day competition kicked off with the girls’ events on Friday evening and by the time the waters calmed after the boys’ races on Saturday, the outcome revealed a slew of Donegal success. Three separate Donegal swimmers brought home a pair of first place medals with a couple school records sprinkled in. Ethan Shonk was responsible for both of the new Donegal best times with his first-place performance in the 200 free (1:45.17) and another first-place effort in the backstroke event with his time of 52.25, both times securing the junior a place in the Donegal school record books. Senior Jordynn Park topped the podium in both the butterfly (57.3) and breaststroke (1:05.00), and classmate Claire
O’Neill touched first in the 200 IM (2:10.12) and backstroke (59.98). “We had a really good weekend,” celebrated their coach Alison Kreider. “The girls were on fire Friday night and it was exciting to watch them.” Donegal’s Grant Leibfried raced to a third-place finish in the butterfly (53.72) and also claimed 10th in the breaststroke. Logan Fry’s weekend included a ninth place in the 200 free and 12th in the breaststroke. Sierra Houck took six-place medals in both the 50 and 100 free, and Kylie Wilkinson touched in 10th in the 200 free and 12th in the 500 free, both sophomores holding the promise of plenty more to come. “ Very impressive meet for them all,” summarized Kreider, as the team turns their training and attention on District Championships slated for early March. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Finally cleared to get back on the court, the Lady Indians encountered a formidable Cocalico club to welcome them back to league competition on February 10th, and ultimately succumbed to a 46-32 loss. Other than a second quarter run for Cocalico (21-8), the Indians kept pace with the Eagles point-for-point in three quarters of the contest, but the 21-point burst from Cocalico before the half created an unsurmountable deficit. Donegal’s offense was led by
Catie Weber and Rylee Smith who knocked in seven apiece. The Wednesday night contest was the first opportunity for the Lady Indians to compete since their January 25th loss to Conestoga Valley 60-48. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Donegal boys also faced the Eagles last Wednesday, but their clash took place at Cocalico’s gym and the Indians came up just a few points short, in a 53-49 final score. Khalil Masden netted 20 points for Donegal, with Levi Sites contributing 11, and another 10 from Gavin Hawk. Collectively, the Indians put together an impressive 11-of-13 showing at the line for a free throw shooting percentage of 85 percent. Two days earlier, the Indians fell behind in a low-scoring 4837 loss during a trip to Northern Lebanon. The Vikings jumped ahead early and managed to build a 2812 first half lead. While the Indians clapped back to outscore the Vikings 25-20 in the second half, it was not quite enough to erase the deficit. Levi Sites paced the Indians offense with 10 points, complemented by an addition eight from Khalil Masden. As the season draws towards its conclusion, the Indians anticipate a sequence of nonleague opponents in Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Garden Spot.

The Donegal-Witness Tree DAR Chapter supported the Lebanon VA Medical Center, the School District of Lancaster, and Dress for Success in December. To make it safe and easy for members to support these organizations, the DAR chapter organized a drive-up event, the Treasures From the Heart Trunk Drop, on Dec. 5. DAR members
identified five outdoor drop-off locations where members could bring donations and give them directly to DAR volunteers. Clothing donated to benefit Dress for Success was valued at over $1,000. A $20 check was also received. Dress for Success helps women in local communities take the first steps to financial independence for
themselves and their families by providing them with career and work attire. Monies also went to the School District of Lancaster’s Families in Transition Program, known as FIT. The goal of this program is to enable a student’s education to continue as uninterrupted as possible while the student is homeless. The items
donated for Families in Transition were valued at $400. Additionally, $375 in monetary donations was received. The Lebanon VA Medical Center has been providing medical care to veterans for more than 70 years. The DAR chapter collected items valued at $250 for the organization along with a $75 check.

“Sammy & Sinatra” Performances Set

“Less Snore, More Cuddle” Are you having trouble sleeping in 2021? If so, please... Take This Reader’s Quiz: 1. Do you snore at night, or sleep with someone who does? 2. Do you wake up with pain in your back or neck? 3. Do you share a bed with someone who wants a firmer or softer mattress than you? 4. Do you wish you could wake up more refreshed and full of energy? If you answered “Yes” twice or more, this story is for you.
Introducing “Less Snore, More Cuddle™” Sleep Systems
The Snoring Solution Did you know that astronauts don’t snore in space? Snoring is made worse by gravity’s effect on the throat, which narrows the airway. For this reason, snoring can be cured by sleeping in zero gravity -- or on an adjustable Cuddle Zone sleep system to elevate you head.
Stop Compromising Your Sleep If you wish you half of the bed was firmer or softer, a Cuddle Zone system can help. With “His & Her” custom-fit technology, you get a firmness that’s just right for each of you, you keep the Cuddle Zone.
Back and Neck Pain, Gone Sleeping without pain requires body support and spinal alignment. Unlike “firm or soft” mattresses, Cuddle Zone systems support the spine and neck with 2 to 4 comfort layers.
More Energy, More Life Cuddle Zone systems help give you deep, restorative sleep. Your muscles repair and grow, and your brain flushes out toxins. You wake up refreshed and energized.
Budget Bed or Sleep System? Why visit a local store when you can shop online? Because we don’t sell budget beds. We offer sleep systems, combining mattress, adjustable base and pillow. Each fitted to your needs. You can even experience any sleep system in our Dream Room. No website does that.
And those “unbiased” mattress review websites? They’re often owned by huge, private equity firms. But we’re not a faceless company. We’re locally owned in Lancaster. When you shop here, you support the community.
Now Explore Your Options At Gardner’s Mattress & More, we’ve curated over 24 Cuddle Zone sleep systems for you to see in person, 7 days a week. Private appointments are available. People enjoy our shopping experience, in part because there’s no sales pressure ever. And we have over 200 verified stories of customer delight for your review. As a reader, you may bring the coupon below to Gardner’s Mattress & More and claim your Free Gifts before the March 2 deadline.
FREE READER’S GIFTS As a reader of The Merchandisers & Advertisers, you are entitled to 4 Free Gifts. Simply bring this coupon to Gardner’s Mattress & More to receive: • FREE Gift #1: Custom made, Custom-Fit Pillow ($60.00 value) • FREE Gift #2: Free copy of our new book, Sleep Better! The only sleep systems that provide a Cuddle Zone in the middle, while raising or lowering head or feet sections. This solves common health problems for couples who sleep together. Here are some of the healthy benefits:
Prima Theatre will present the most celebrated tunes of Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra with two fresh takes: an on-the-move live performance and an ondemand concert. The on-demand concert will include stories of how the artists navigated the culture of their time and will offer insights into the power of prejudice, pop culture, and politics. Previously scheduled to be performed for a live audience, “Sammy & Sinatra” will be available beginning on Friday, March 12, as premium content on PrimaNOW, the theater’s online video platform, at www.primatheatre.org/now. Access to PrimaNOW is available for a nominal fee, while free for Prima Partners (donors) and season subscribers with an access code provided by Prima via email. A new offering has also been added titled “Sammy & Sinatra On-The-Move.” Traveling in a classic car, performers will utilize the vintage vehicle as a backdrop to present amplified and upbeat musical selections from the two crooners’ songbooks. Performances are available for March bookings at neighborhoods, homes, or businesses throughout Lancaster County, made possible by Michael’s Motor Cars and the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation. Booking for “Sammy & Sinatra On-The-Move” can be completed online, with available dates and additional information at www.primatheatre.org/sam my. Current dates include Fridays and Saturdays from Friday, March 5, through Saturday, March 20.
