“Annie” will bring joy and heart to Donegal stage

When Donegal Performing Arts (DPA) presents “Annie,” audiences will see a story of a plucky young orphan who maintains her positive outlook even in the face of challenges, said Isabella Reich, a freshman who portrays the title character.

“Her whole personality is that she’s an optimist, and her goal is a better, brighter future for herself and her orphan friends,”

Isabella said. “She’s a very happy person, but she goes through a lot of sad things in the show, and she experiences a lot of emotions.”

Based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip, “Annie” tells the story of an orphan searching for her family. Annie lives in an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Dreaming of a better life, the young girl escapes but is caught and returned. Meanwhile, billionaire Oliver Warbucks, looking to improve his public image, invites an orphan to stay in his

mansion for the holidays. His secretary, Grace Farrell, chooses Annie.

Warbucks grows fond of Annie and wants to adopt her, but Annie longs to find her real parents, so Warbucks offers a reward for information, prompting many fraudsters to come forward. Miss Hannigan, her scheming brother Rooster, and his girlfriend, Lily, plot to pose as Annie’s parents to collect the reward.

Isabella noted that although the show has a happy ending, it’s

For three quarters of a century, Kraybill Mennonite School has been providing academic and spiritual enrichment to Lancaster County children.

The school, located in Mount Joy, invites the public to celebrate its milestone 75th anniversary at a fundraising banquet.

The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 29,

Melhorn Manor, 977 W. Main St., Mount Joy.

It will feature food, fellowship and fundraising, said school representative Rachelle Vriend.

“We plan to have various speakers from the Kraybill community sharing on God’s faithfulness through the past 75 years, as well as speakers talking about the financial needs for Kraybill moving forward,” she explained, adding that the evening will also

“As an all-volunteer, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, our mission is to invest in Donegal athletics in order to support our school district as a whole, enhance the overall student experience and contribute to the quality of life and closeness of our community,” said James “Buzz” Albert, founder and board member of Donegal Athletic Club (DAC).

As Albert explained, the organization provides financial

support for athletics, which allows the district to continue to enhance academics, the arts and other areas. DAC also creates community-wide opportunities for recreation, fitness and sports, contributing to the livability and appeal of the community, he said.

This year, DAC celebrates its 15th anniversary. “The idea for DAC grew from my realization of the importance that athletics play in shaping our student -athletes to be the best they can be - to contribute to a productive

Men of Iron will host inaugural 5K

“The mission of Men of Iron is to change a culture one man at a time through one-on-one mentorship, which focuses on the Core Five: faith, family, friends, fitness and finances,” said Josh Henson, vice president of generosity for the Manheim-based organization.

To help people meet the fitness goal, as well as provide opportunities for fellowship, the nonprofit will host its first Men of Iron 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, March 15. The event will be held at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Day-of registration will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the race will start at 9 a.m.

“We wanted to create an event for the community that would give people an opportunity to learn more about Men of Iron and what we do,” said Steve Glick, director of marketing, explaining the impetus for this inaugural race. “We spent some time brainstorming and decided a 5K is great because we hope to not only have runners and walkers participate, but also hope they bring their families along to cheer them on. This would give us the opportunity to connect with families in Manheim and the surrounding community.”

The race will offer opportunities for anyone who is interested in participating, Henson said.

“This is an accessible event for every fitness level,” he shared. “Come out and meet some great people, get some exercise or scratch your competitive itch and hear about an organization that is changing lives and impacting families.”

Men of Iron began in 2006 at Victory Church in Lancaster. At the time, the organization had 20 members - 10 proteges and 10 mentors. The organization’s focus from day one has been on mentorship, with proteges and mentors meeting face-to-face to encourage accountability and promote spiritual growth.

Now headquartered in Manheim, Men of Iron has impacted 3,500 men in southcentral Pennsylvania, as well as in North Carolina and Florida.

“Many of our resources have been used across the country,” shared Lehman, “from our free online devotionals to our small-group-based men’s ministry materials.”

Glick encourages men who are interested to learn more about the organization.

“Men of Iron is for any man who wants to grow as a husband, father and leader,” he said. “Through free resources, small groups and one-toone mentorship, we equip men to know God and know their purpose. We would love to help any man out there take their next step.”

An easy first step, said Henson, is registering for the 5K.

“Men of Iron is a nonprofit faithbased organization that relies on the support of like-minded partners,” he said. “Proceeds from the event will help us operationally expand our impact.”

Lehman hopes for a good turnout for the race and is excited about the opportunity to share the organization’s mission.

feature an art auction. “We are holding this event to raise funds for Kraybill Mennonite School and to go towards improving our campus.”

The school plays a special role in the community, Vriend said.

“Kraybill Mennonite is a Christ-centered school with caring teachers and a wonderful community,” she shared. “Our core values (are) Christ-centered, Anabaptist perspective, educational excellence, community building, peacemaking and service.”

Kraybill opened its doors to 31 students in grades one through 10 on Sept. 6, 1949. At that time, the students all came from Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Old Order River Brethren congregations.

Much has changed through the decades at the school, including the composition of its student body and the structure of the school buildings. The original school met in a renovated church meetinghouse that lacked electricity. Over the years, multiple buildings have been added to the campus, and the school added prekindergarten

and kindergarten while dropping grades nine and 10. Today, the school has an enrollment of over 230 students who represent 75-plus local churches and more than 20 denominations. The school serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade.

Details of the banquet, including the menu - which will be served by Mountain Laurel Catering & Events - are still being finalized, but Vriend encourages people to reserve tickets early for an event that will reflect on the past while also focusing on the future.

“Kraybill would like to invite you to an evening of food and fellowship, as well as an invitation to be financially a part of raising a firm foundation for the Kraybill community to build upon,” she said. “We look forward to having a wonderful evening together and partnering financially with the community to support this wonderful school.”

The deadline to purchase banquet tickets is Sunday, March 16. For more information on the banquet or to purchase tickets, visit www.kraybill mennonite.org/banquet.

After the race, people are encouraged to stick around for food and fellowship.

“We are working hard to secure post-race vendors, but we will definitely have both coffee and food available to purchase for post-race runners and spectators too,” said Christine Lehman, events coordinator. “We will also have fruit and additional water available for our runners once they finish the course.”

“Men of Iron is committed to changing a culture, one man at a time,” she said. “It’s our mission, and we take that responsibility seriously. We work hard to intentionally create products and services to equip men to become godly leaders in their homes, their place of employment and their communities. We look forward to making connections with more families in our community and invite everyone to join us for our inaugural 5K.”

Preregistration for the race will end on Wednesday, March 12. For more information, visit https:// menofiron.org/5k.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included.

full of emotional ups and downs.

“I think the message of the show is that life can and does get better,” she said. “This is a really cute show, but people don’t remember how sad parts of it are. A lot of people are going to cry during the show, but there is sad and happy in life.”

Although Annie starts out looking for her parents, she soon discovers that “family” takes many forms, said Jocelyn Yoder, who plays Grace Farrell.

“The show talks about family, but also about how family isn’t just blood,” she stated. “Family really comes down to the people you care about and the people you love. You can find family in the most unlikely places.”

For Jocelyn, portraying a character who is a businesswoman, a love interest for Warbucks and a mother figure to Annie has been a challenge at times.

“This is my first show where I’ve had a lot of lines,” said the

11th-grader. “I’ve typically been ensemble before. It’s been really exciting to learn to embody this character.”

Junior Nathan Frey plays Oliver Warbucks. He noted that his character undergoes a personality change throughout the show.

“Mr. Warbucks is a very interesting character to play,” Nathan shared. “He’s very cold in the beginning to pretty much everybody, but once he meets Annie, he starts to have emotions again. It’s very fun to portray the change from completely shut off to attachments to people again.”

It’s also been challenging for junior Derek Palmeri to portray Rooster Hannigan, a not-so-good guy who is motivated by greed.

“I’ve been loving each and every step of this,” Derek said.

“This is my first lead in a musical, and the role has been very good for me as an actor, because I have expanded my horizons when it comes to acting and singing.”

The winner of seven Tony Awards, including “Best Musical,” “Annie” features a variety of well-known songs, including “Tomorrow” and “It’s the HardKnock Life.”

Under the direction of Brianna Wilhelm, a 2017 Donegal graduate and veteran of the program, DPA returns to the stage after the club received numerous nominations from the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards for its 2024 fall play, “Radium Girls,” including Outstanding Play. The club’s 2024 spring musical, “The Wizard of Oz,” also set a DPA attendance record.

Derek said people who come to see “Annie” will walk away not only humming the songs, but also taking the show’s message to heart.

“Audiences will take away that you are loved no matter where you are or how poor or rich you are,” he said. “Come see the amazing talent and time DPA has put into this show. We have put so much hard work and dedication

into this show, and I just hope everyone comes out to see the magic come to life.”

“Annie” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, in the auditorium at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. For tickets and more information, visit www.dpa.donegalsd.org.

society as good community members, good employees and great leaders,” Albert shared.

As a volunteer coach with Donegal football, he realized that public school budgets were stretched thin, and extracurricular activities such as sports were an easy target for funding cuts.

“There were things our athletic programs desired, but I was seeing some of those things not being done due to budgets and perhaps rightfully so,” he recalled. “That sparked the thought that others would join me in giving back to something that they received so much from during their time as a Donegal athlete. ... The response from the very start has been overwhelming.”

From an initial meeting of about a dozen alumni, friends, coaches and administrators, DAC has grown swiftly, he said.

“We have leaders from many eras of Donegal athletics, and we are very much represented by almost every decade and area of Donegal’s past,” he stated. “We have coaches, administrators, athletes, friends and family leading our efforts.”

Membership in DAC is open to anyone, whether they have participated in athletics at Donegal, are parents of Donegal athletes past and present, are educators or are just interested parties.

“We have received funds from the Pacific coast in California, the southernmost tip of Texas and almost every region in between

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, March 4, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Audrey Hull will speak on the topic “Trusting God Through the Trials of Life.”

Hull is married to her Irish sweetheart of 38 years, and together they raised six children. While living in England, they did ministry with families and churches to help raise up the next generation of believers. Nowadays, they still counsel fami-

as the message spreads,” Albert said. “The challenge is to find every single former athlete from Donegal and see if they feel led as we are to give back and help us continue the tradition. It sounds daunting and it is, but that is the goal.”

As DAC president Abby Hoover explained, DAC supports student-athletes in a variety of ways by partnering with Donegal School District.

“Through this collaboration, DAC helps to offset the costs of essential equipment, as well as upgrades to fields, stadiums and courts,” she said. “This support not only alleviates financial burdens, but also creates a more enriching and professional environment for student-athletes to thrive, fostering both their athletic and academic success.”

To support its mission, DAC hosts fundraisers throughout the year, including a membership drive and a fall golf tournament.

“New this year, we will be partnering with Voyage Mount Joy for the first-ever brew festival on April 26,” she said. “We are excited to have been chosen as a recipient of the proceeds for this event!”

Since its inception, DAC has raised and donated more than $1 million to athletic programs in the district, and although the club’s focus is sports, its mission benefits everyone, Albert said.

“In a small way, every dollar we raise and contribute to athletics trickles down to every area of the

student experience at Donegal, whether it’s in academics, athletics, the arts and any other extracurricular activity,” he remarked. “Athletics is simply what formed us and drives us moving forward.”

Hoover noted that people can support DAC in a variety of ways, including donating funds, volunteering at an event or participating in events that benefit the club.

“I would encourage anyone in question of supporting DAC to attend one of the sporting events on Donegal School District facilities,” she said. “The student-athletes’ hard work, dedication and grit will most certainly encourage you to give so you can help take them to the next level.”

Albert suggests supporters reflect on the impact of Donegal athletics on their lives.

“If you feel like you or perhaps your kids are better citizens, employees, family leaders, whatever it may be and participation in scholastic athletics - in particular, Donegal - has helped shape that, then we think you might agree

and join us in giving back to help sustain the opportunities and success to make participation in athletics available and enjoyable to today’s student-athletes and future student-athletes,” he said. “I created DAC because I am proud of who we are: the Donegal Indians. We have countless success stories at a high level, but we all play a part in that. I wanted to give everyone a chance to realize that and the opportunity to give back if they feel led.”
