“Icame to know Jesus when I was 15 years old,” said Keith Cullen, the new director of student ministries at RAISE28 (formerly Rainbow’s End Youth Services). “Introducing young people to the good news of Jesus is just me sharing what has been shared with me.”
Cullen assumed the role in late January, but he was already very familiar with the youth center and its mission, having served on the board for the previous two years.
He grew up in Romulus, Mich., and attended Moody Bible Institute in Spokane, Wash. For five years prior to his new position, he served as a youth pastor in Mount Joy.
His diverse background also includes working for Jon Brandt Landscaping and Excavating in Elizabethtown and for WellSpan in mental health and applied behavior analysis services.
When the director of student ministries opportunity arose at RAISE28, Cullen was eager to step in.
“Being a board member for two years prior has given me more of a bird’s-eye view,” he said. “When the opportunity came, I sensed it to be the right move and all in God’s timing.”
In his new position, he wants to absorb as much information as possible and form strong partnerships, he said.
“My goal is to learn all that I can about our ministry to best serve our community,” he explained. “My aim is to collaborate with students, parents, volunteers and community leaders to discover how to best fulfill our mission of reaching local youth with the
life-changing Gospel of Jesus.”
He also wants to highlight and honor the history of RAISE28, which was founded in 1982.
“We have seen many changes in more recent years,” he shared. “Some challenges will be how we might incorporate some old ideas in new ways. Though we have much work ahead of us, we have an excellent team of staff and volunteers that share in this ministry - some we may not have met yet!”
Located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, RAISE28 offers after-school programs for youths in kindergarten through 12th grade.
“We enjoy a good amount of games and activities, share a meal together - provided free by our volunteers - and spend time learning from the Bible,” Cullen remarked. “Additionally, we host community events throughout the year; offer free programs such as music and karate lessons; and provide academic services and professional development such
Cullen
as tutoring, volunteering and internships.”
Cullen moved with his family to Mount Joy in 2020. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Vicki, and their daughters, Charis and Magnolia, ages 4 and 2, respectively.
“A few of our favorite things are going on bike rides, hiking and birding, reading and singing and dancing,” he said, sharing that his personal hobbies are varied as well. “I have my hands in a little bit of everything, but I enjoy training in MMA, skateboarding, playing guitar and learning Spanish.”
He’s optimistic about what the future holds for him at RAISE28, and he’s passionate about sharing the organization’s services with even more students.
“We’re excited for all that God is doing in our community,” he said, “and we look forward to serving alongside those who share the heart of our mission.”

For just over two years, community organization Advoz worked with middle and high school students in the Elizabethtown Area School District to reduce conflicts and promote restorative practices.
Although the Lancaster-based organization’s participation in the district ended after grant funding ran out, Advoz saw positive results from collaborating with
the students, and it’s now looking to expand Advoz partnerships with other districts in the county.
From Elizabethtown, Advoz staff members worked with ninth-grade students in the School District of Lancaster to highlight mitigation of classroom conflict and improve communication skills.
“We focused on an introduction of conflict skills, ‘I’ messages, and the various conflict styles of different people,”

If you are 58 years old or older and enjoy staying active, the Lanco Senior Softball league is looking for you.
Men and women within a 100mile radius of Lancaster city who are interested in playing can contact league president Dave Dean at 610-334-1124 or email treasurer Dave Zerbe at dzerbe @comcast.net.
“We are looking for players,” said Zerbe, who resides in Strasburg. “Anybody interested in
playing should call or email and give us your contact information so we can follow up with you. But if there are people who can’t play anymore, but would like to help coach, we’d be interested in those people.”
Each team has a coach and an assistant coach, and some serve as league officers and board members.
Lanco Senior Softball, which started in 1990, currently has about 200 players divided among 12 teams split into two divisions, American and National.

Last year’s teams were Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant (home field at Rapho Park), LH Brubaker Appliances (Garrett Field), RH Cooper & Son (Rapho Park), Speedwell Construction (Rapho Park), Ephrata Good’s Disposal (Ephrata Middle School), Kautz Construction (Garrett Field), Strasburg (Strasburg Jaycee Park), TJ Rockwell’s (Rapho Park), Caruso’s Pizzeria (Rapho Park), GE Richards Graphic Supplies (Garrett Field), Mid Penn Bank (Ephrata Middle School), and Steel Fab Enterprises (Garrett Field).
Players do not have to play with the team based closest to their homes.
“It’s competitive,” Zerbe said. “These fellas, most of them have been playing some sort of organized ball in high school right through college and in different softball leagues as they got older and still enjoy the game.”
The median age of players in the league is 64, Zerbe said.
Teams will begin practicing in April, and there will occasionally be in-season practices. The season will start in either the last week of April or first week of May with one or two games a week. The seven-inning games will start at 6 p.m. and will generally be over by 7:15 or 7:30, Zerbe said.
It is a modified league, which means pitchers throw as fast as they can while using a bowling-style motion, Zerbe explained. There is no sliding or base stealing. American Softball Association (ASA) rules and ASA umpires are used.
“We do have fun, but it can get very competitive,” said Zerbe. “You have different calibers of teams. You have some teams where guys are just trying to have fun and enjoy the game. If they win, they win. If they lose, they lose. Other guys like to win and win it all.”
In addition to Rapho Park in Mount Joy, Ephrata Middle School, Garrett Field in Willow Street, and Strasburg Jaycee Park, Stauffer Park in Lancaster is used for championship games and could host regular-season games this year.
There were 17 regular-season games last year, with that total depending on the number of teams in the league. The regular season is slated to finish at the end of July, followed by the double-elimination playoffs with all teams qualifying and seeded based on record. A champion is crowned from both divisions.
Zerbe is hoping to attract more players for the 2025 campaign. “It seems like we’re struggling with having fellas in their early 50s who are excited about continuing to play softball,” he said. “Some of the guys are coming back and playing, but recruiting new fellas seems to be a little harder.”
shared Krista Rittenhouse, interim executive director and director of restorative practices for the organization. “We worked on community building. We believe if we don’t trust each other and we don’t care about each other, we’re not going to engage well with each other.”
Advoz also supports the peer mediation program in the School District of Lancaster, providing a facilitator in the school to oversee student mediators who have been trained by Advoz.
“Students are really seeing the value of this program,” Rittenhouse said. “It’s mitigating violence in the hallways, streets and after school, even on social media. Students are learning that if they handle conflict in the supportive environment of mediation, that spills out into how they handle conflict when they aren’t being supervised.”
Advoz also works with Sacred Heart School in Lancaster, providing services one day a week for the small private school.
The goal of Advoz’s collaboration with school districts is to reduce the
need for low-level offenders to be referred out to authorities such as district judges.
“They can report to our embedded school resource officers, and they still have consequences for their actions, but we are focused on repairing and maintaining relationships,” Rittenhouse explained. “Our students are going to absorb their education, and engagement is best when they feel supportive, they feel safe, and their brain is not in an activated state.”
In other words, she noted, restorative practices help students stay in their “learning brain,” not in their “survival brain.”
“We are all about turning conflict into conversation,” she said. “All of the programs we have are intended to
First-grade students learn how to listen as part of a weekly lesson with Advoz facilitator Carmen Epstein.

The requirements are simple. “You have to have a love of the sport, baseball or softball,” said Zerbe. “You have to love the sport to want to play. You have to have a little bit of competitive spirit and ability to play. That being said, if you want to enjoy and meet some good fellas who are unified in their ability to play and want to play, then come join us. It’s good exercise. The older we get, the more we move and the more we stay active, the longer we’re going to live. If you can come out and one night a week you run and bat and throw the ball, it keeps your blood pumping and it keeps you young. Come out and have a good time and enjoy the camaraderie. You can meet people and become friends.”

create structures to remove barriers to having hard conversations, to empower collaboration and inclusive conversation so everyone has a voice in determining a solution that works for everyone.”
Formed in 2017, Advoz was created from a merger of Lancaster Mediation Center and the Center for Community Peacemaking. Those organizations have roots that go back 40 years, so the depth of knowledge and resources is strong, Rittenhouse said.
Advoz concentrates on restorative practices, an umbrella term for the values and guiding principles that include collaborating, inclusive
learning, community building and response to harm. Restorative justice comes into play when harm has been caused.
“Now we’re in a subset of restorative practices that requires accountability, making things right,” she said.
According to statistics provided by Advoz, schools that employ restorative practices see positive results. Graduation rates increase, truancy decreases and suspensions also decline. Teachers report that restorative justice practices help them build caring relationships with their students and make a positive impact on school climate, ultimately leading to an increase in safety.
“Change comes when students have a sense of feeling connected and invested in their community,” she said, adding that it’s not a quick fix.
“Restorative practices often get misrepresented because it takes three to five years of intentionality to see a culture shift and to see skills change.”
Schools that choose to work with Advoz should be prepared to put in work up front to see big results.
“It takes more time on the front end to get a program going,” she said.
“You have to give up instruction time in the beginning, but you gain it back when students are engaged, inclusive and collaborative. When students are actively being invited to engage in their learning, they are less likely to be disruptive in the classroom.”
If a school is interested in working with Advoz, Rittenhouse suggests reaching out for an initial consultation.
“We offer multiple ways to support schools,” she said. “We have training for individual staff, for teams, for direct facilitation.”
The organization also works with businesses on conflict resolution and team building.
“We want our organization to be connected to the community and community owned,” Rittenhouse said. “We believe if people are using these strategies in their own lives, in their work and their homes, that has a trickle effect into the community.”
