Spread joy as a Make-A-Wish clown
BY CAT SHANNON
Each year, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy travels through the county, bringing smiles to the faces of people along the route and raising funds for children facing life-threatening illnesses. You can be part of the fun by joining the event as a Make-A-Wish clown.
Participating as a clown is a fun and easy way to support the effort, said Amy Nolt, whose clown name is hArMonY.
“Pretty much anybody can be a clown,” she said. “I used to be very introverted, but I love doing this.”
To help people get into clown character, Amy holds classes at
her Lititz home.
“We teach people how to put on makeup, how to choose their clown name and outfit,” she said. “We teach them clown etiquette and give pointers on how to interact with people.”
Clown opportunities are available for people of all ages, she said, and no special skills are required.
“Some people do magic tricks as they walk around. Some people do balloons. We had an acrobat last year, but you don’t have to be able to do anything other than be available to walk around, talk to the kids, take pictures with the Wish kids,” she said. “Some people like to hand out stickers or little items to give away.”
This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will be held on Saturday, May 10, at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. A family fest will begin at 9 a.m., and the truck convoy will kick off at 1:30 p.m. Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.
Amy and her husband, Mark, have been organizing the clowns for about 10 years. Amy has been involved with Make-A-Wish for almost 30 years.
“I started in college as part of a clown ministry,” she said, noting

When young people ages 8 to 12 who attend Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Power Camp asked for more sports to be offered at camp, area representatives Diana Roth, Kyle Martin, and Emily Johnson responded. This year, the New Holland camp will offer baseball and track and field in addition to five other sports, and the Manheim camp will offer lacrosse, in addition to six other sports.
The New Holland Power Camp will be held at Petra
Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, from Monday, June 16, to Thursday, June 19. The Manheim Power Camp will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, from Monday, July 14, through Thursday, July 17.
Roth said that the theme for this year’s camps is “Glory,” based on II Corinthians 3:18. The faith-based curriculum will focus on the question “What are you chasing?” by examining the quest for individual glory versus reflecting God’s glory.

joining WOTM after learning that the organization supports the community through initiatives such as Mooseheart, an Illinois-based home for children in need, and Moosehaven, a home for the elderly in Florida.
“I joined when I was 19, when I was not in a relationship with anyone and was not involved in anything else,” she recalled, noting that she enjoyed going to the monthly meetings. “I was a very active member. I hardly ever missed a meeting.”
Calling herself an “active member” is a bit of an understatement. Over the years, she served as chair of most of the WOTM committees. She held additional leadership positions within her chapter, including serving as Junior Regent and Senior Regent and earning the College of Regents, the highest honor for a member in her respective chapter.
From 1969 to 1970, she was appointed by the International WOTM to serve as Deputy Grand Regent of Eastern Pennsylvania. From 1976 to 1978, she was appointed to serve on the International Grand Council.
In 1988, Janet was appointed as the International Grand Regent, which is the highest appointment granted to the International WOTM. She considers this to be her greatest life achievement, noting that she’s very proud of the accomplishment.
Janet was born in Hollidaysburg to Joseph and Ida Amelia Horton Derr on
March 12, 1925. She had three brothers and one sister. When Janet was a child, her parents settled down in the Elizabethtown area, having moved several times before for work.
Janet married Clyde Kaylor and had a son, Dennis Dale Kaylor. After the couple divorced, she married Robert S. Harple in 1963. The family included Robert’s four children and Janet’s 7-year-old son. In 1964, the couple’s daughter, Melissa Jo Harple, was born.
Early in her career, she was employed at the Marietta Depot from age 17 to her early 20s, working her way up from forklift operator to a medium lift and a high lift operator.
She stayed home to raise her children, and she also worked part time for 12 years at the Hillcrest Supper Club along with other restaurants in Elizabethtown, including a few years at the Watering Trough in Mount Joy and at the Elizabethtown Moose Lodge 596.
When she was 98 years old, Janet moved to Paramount Senior Living. Reflecting on her life, she underscored the value of community service and encouraged others to give back. She especially encourages people to consider joining the Women of the Moose.
As for the secret to a long, happy life, Janet didn’t hesitate to credit her daily ritual: At 4 p.m. every day, she has her own happy hour, complete with a Manhattan.

Power Camp
In addition to baseball and track and field, the New Holland camp will offer basketball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, and soccer. Roth and Martin are the camp directors. The Manheim camp, which is directed by Johnson, will offer baseball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling, in addition to lacrosse.

Camps begin at 9 a.m. each day and run until 3:30 p.m. Lunch is provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme. Although the themes for this year’s camps have not been chosen, Roth noted that Wacky Wednesday is always a favorite. Each day begins with worship featuring a worship band and a speaker, usually a local
pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The speaker at the New Holland camp will be Petra pastor Brian Coles,” reported Martin. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, enjoying a snack, and joining in a closing assembly.
Volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school, college, or club coaches, and many serve for both weeks. Interns assist the directors

and coaches. According to Roth, interns who have helped out at camp previously “know the drill,” so they will be given more leadership responsibility.
“They will lead debrief time at the end of each day and be in charge of group competitions and games,” explained Martin. Huddles, groups of five to seven students, are overseen by a huddle leader. Huddle leaders are high school students who lead, guide, and encourage campers. About 50 huddle leaders are needed for a camp of 120 to 150 students, which is the number expected at both camps this year.
Student participants are also given the chance to take part in Coins for
Campers, a competition between boys and girls to raise funds for similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar. Martin stated that in 2024, the goal was to raise $5,000 for the other camps and that the goal was surpassed. There is a cost to attend camps. A sibling discount is applied when more than one child from a family attends. Some financial assistance is available. Readers who wish to register a child for camp may visit www.lancasterfca.org/ camps. Questions about financial assistance may be emailed to droth@fca.org. Specific questions about the Manheim camp may be sent to emilyjohnson @fca.org.

Clown from pg 1
that when the previous clown organizer found out Amy had clowned in college, he invited her to help out with the convoy.
For her character, Amy dresses in a rainbow-striped outfit covered in music notes. Her husband, whose clown name is Teed Off, dresses as a golfer.
The clowns entertain the crowd before the truck convoy departs from the Manheim Auto Auction and then walk along the convoy route, spreading joy as they go.
“We try to cover the entire 26-mile route, but we need help to do that,” Amy said. “We had 14 clowns last year, and that was a big number for recent years. In the past, we’ve had as many as 40 clowns. Trying to cover 26 miles with a few people is a little daunting.”
When she says people of all ages can participate as
clowns, she means it. “We take any age,” she said. “Our oldest clown last year was 85. Anyone under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.”
If people are interested in supporting the fundraiser but don’t want to dress up as clowns, there are opportunities to walk the route as a non-clown as well, she said.
Clown classes are held on an as-needed basis, and Amy said she’s available to teach a class on any Saturday or Sunday in April, except for Easter Sunday, April 20.
“I invite anyone who is interested to come to a clown class and learn more,” she said. “The clowns just add a little more fun to the convoy.”
For more information on volunteering as a clown, call or text Amy at 717-587-9841.
