When she founded Selah’s Heart in 2021 with a mission of supporting women experiencing pregnancy loss, Carolyn Ogilvie hoped the organization would take off. It has far exceeded her expectations.
“The Lord is moving mountains, and we’re expanding our reach,” she said. Selah’s Heart, named for the stillborn daughter of Ogilvie’s best friend, Lauren Walker, provides comfort for grieving families through care packages.
The community is invited to pack care boxes to donate to women in hospitals around the country on Saturday, April 26. The event will be held at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Along with packing the boxes, participants will experience a night of prayer and community, Ogilvie said.
“We have partnered with Awake Initiative, who is experienced in leading groups in worship,” she stated. “People can come, have some refreshments that our amazing donors have provided, enjoy a time of worship and then pack the boxes.”
When she began the organization, Ogilvie packed all of the boxes in her Elizabethtown home.
“The first year, I did 20 boxes, and I thought that was so cool,” she said. “Last year, we did 90 for the year. This year, I said, ‘Let’s try to double that. Go big or go home.’ Our goal is to do 200 boxes this year, with 100 packed at this event.”

For a demonstration of the hard work and talent that goes into supporting sports teams, head to the Green Nation Indoor Celebration. The event will be held on Saturday, April 12, at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Doors will open at 10 a.m.
“There are 39 units signed up to perform,” said Amanda Hess, concessions coordinator for the event. “That’s more than last year.”
Participating groups will come from Lancaster and surrounding counties in Pennsylvania, as well as from Maryland and Virginia.

“We include the smallest little ring you’ve ever seen, an infant ring,” Ogilvie said. “People are encouraged to take pictures of their baby with the ring and then take the ring home, wear it on a chain and have a keepsake of an item their baby touched.”
Children age 11 and under are invited to a Kids Fishing Derby, organized by the Donegal Fish & Conservation Association (DFCA). The event will be held at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12. Handicapped anglers of all ages who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license are also welcome to participate.
“The Donegal Fish & Conservation Association has a long history of outreach to the local community, and it is important for us to provide this opportunity for children to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends,” said Scot Harlacher, who is a member of the association and a member of the mission team at the church. “We hope that kids will come away from this event with an appreciation for nature and a sense of accomplishment that they were able to piece together all the skills needed to

Empowering girls and growing leaders
BY CAT SHANNON
“We’re helping girls get a sense of who they are,” said Laura Pepper, educational institute program coordinator for the Girls’ Leadership Camp. “A camp like this is important because girls don’t have a lot of in-person experiences with an all-around focus and an opportunity to connect their lives to the lives of other girls and get to know them in a meaningful way.”
The camp, which is organized by the PA Masonic Youth Foundation, will be held from Sunday, July 20, through Friday, July 25, at the Patton Campus, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. It is open to girls ages 10 to 14.
This is the third year for the camp, which evolved from a brainstorming session to promote female leadership.
“We want girls to be able to take the lead in their lives, their community and beyond,” Pepper said.
Each year’s camp has a
theme, and this year will be focused on women’s history, with a specific daily emphasis. The first day will highlight female role models throughout history. Day two will spotlight leadership qualities. On day three, girls will discuss connections, friendships and social pressures. Day four will focus on courage and resilience, and the camp will wrap up with sessions on aspirations and goals.
Along with sessions where girls can meet and interact with local leaders such as small business owners, campers will enjoy arts and crafts, including creating tiedye shirts.
“Girls like to sign each other’s shirt at the end of the week, sort of like signing a yearbook,” Pepper said.
Campers will also have opportunities to use the indoor, heated swimming pool, play games and participate in STEM activities.
Representatives from Samaritan Counseling Center will host mindfulness activities, and campers will learn to make and decorate French pastries with the owner of Elizabethtown-based Valosh Pâtisserie
More than 40 girls attended the first year’s camp, and while enrollment was down slightly last year, Pepper is optimistic about filling the spaces this year. The camp can accept up to 45 girls, and a few scholarships are available for families in need.
Volunteers are also needed to help with the camp, and people can help out for a day or all week.
About half of the campers return each year, a good sign that the program is making an impact, Pepper said. All of the campers in the past have come from Pennsylvania, but
the camp is open to any girls in the age range.
“We want the girls to get to know themselves better and to think about their future,” Pepper stated, noting that the target age for the campers is intentional. “This is a great age for girls to begin to get a sense of themselves and what direction they want their lives to go in.”
The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation is headquartered in Elizabethtown.
The organization hosts several youth groups for girls, including Job’s Daughters, Rainbow for Girls and the Ruth Mitchell Tucker Girls Youth Department.
The Girls’ Leadership Camp provides opportunities for girls to learn leadership skills, make friends and have fun, Pepper said.

fish for trout. It’s important for us to give families the opportunity to spend this time together, make memories and hopefully have some success.”
In conjunction with the fishing derby, the church will hold a pancake breakfast, which is open to the public. The meal will be served in the fellowship hall from 7 to 11 a.m. Proceeds from the breakfast will help to fund a church mission trip to the St. Lawrence County area of upstate New York in July.
“This is an area of New York state that has a huge need for help, especially given their harsh winters and economic challenges,” Harlacher explained. “We plan to install several ramps at people’s homes to help them with access and mobility. Our fundraising efforts fund the purchase of building supplies along with gas and food for the team and allow us to continue with this help for needy families.”
The fishing derby is just one way the DFCA promotes environmental stewardship. The group is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), the DFCA has raised more than 3,000 trout annually since 1964 for stocking in the Donegal Creek. At the fishing derby, there will be more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout stocked for the participants to catch and
take home.
“I encourage kids to come out to this fishing derby because it will present a reasonable chance for them to catch trout,” Harlacher shared. “It may be a bit easier than fishing on an open public trout stream because this area is specifically set up for a children’s event.”
Attendees should dress warmly and be prepared for rain because the event will be held rain or shine. Harlacher noted that people are welcome to come inside the church for food and hot drinks to warm up.
All participants must abide by PFBC regulations, and all fishing must stop at 11 a.m. DFCA members will be on hand until 11:30 a.m. to help participants, but each angler must bring his or her own equipment and clean his or her own fish. All participants must register with the DFCA on the day of the event. Parking will be permitted only in the Donegal Presbyterian Church parking area. Street parking will be prohibited. EPC Golf Outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.
The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting Good Samaritan Services.
The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. There will be two sessions of golf. The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. The deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https://epcgolfouting.com
for more information and to register.
Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.
“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher.
“We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”
Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees.
“We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley.
“Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”
Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis. “Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.
Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https:// goodsamservices.org. A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help.
EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said.
Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need. “We want to make the experience
memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”
Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really
important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”
Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will attend the outing. “His true passion

Experience a live Last Supper
BY CAT SHANNON
The week leading up to Easter is a busy and important one in the Christian faith. You can be a part of the action in a unique way at Ruhl’s Church.
The church, located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, invites the public to a Living Last Supper Service on Holy Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
Men from the church and community will take part as the scene of Jesus and His disciples eating their final Passover meal together is portrayed, explained Diane Rimert, event organizer and director. The Revs. Blaine Wenger and Richard Rimert will read the script, which is based on Mark 14:12-26.
“At this service, a biography of each disciple is read as they enter the room to join Jesus at the Last Supper scene,” Diane said. “Each reading shares their individual relationship with Jesus.” Jesus will be portrayed by Brendon Shenk, a member of Leacock Presbyterian Church.
The men will then share the elements of Communion in the form of bread
and juice before serving it to attendees. Gluten-free bread will also be available.
“Come hear about each disciple and their call to ministry with Christ,” Diane said. “Come see as they share their meal together. Come taste the bread and the wine - grape juice - as they did on the very special night.”
The goal of the Living Last Supper is to make a key part of the Easter story real to attendees, she shared, noting she hopes the event prompts people to ponder, “What’s your life like with Christ?”
“This is a return service that was held over 25 years ago at Ruhl’s Church,”
Diane said, adding that her husband held the service at Conestoga United Methodist Church prior to the pandemic and again in 2022. The idea for the service was introduced at Ruhl’s Church by a former pastor.
Diane said holding a Living Last Supper Service highlights the solemnity and gravity of Holy Thursday.
“This is the time we, as Christians in the church, reflect on Jesus’ last week

before His crucifixion and resurrection,” she said.
“At the end of each disciple’s reading they ask, ‚ÄòIs it I?’ Jesus knows who will hand him over to the Roman soldiers, but they fear or hope it is not one of them. When you hear their stories and relationship with Jesus, it gets us thinking, ‘Do I betray Jesus today in the way I conduct my life as a believer in Him?’”
She added that the service ends in a reflective manner to lead into the Good Friday service and the rejoicing of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Ruhl’s Church will hold Palm Sunday services on
