Stitching history and genealogy together

When you’re passionate about a hobby, it’s easy to spend hours and hours pursuing it. Deb Gepfer and Susan Heydt certainly know something about that. The women will offer a story based on their own experience when they present “Don’t Go Down the Rabbit Hole: Researching an Antique Sampler.” The program will be held on Thursday, April 24, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the East Donegal Township Municipal Building, 190 Rock Point Road, Maytown.

while sharing the family history of Ann Frances Breneman,” she stated. “We found some very interesting history in her family tree! Neither one of us is a genealogical expert, but we both find the research addicting.”

Gepfer and Heydt are both longtime fans of textile arts. Gepfer, who is the secretary of the Maytown Historical Society, is a retired preschool director and teacher.

“Neither one of us is a genealogical expert, but we both find the research addicting.”

Although they bill their presentation as a sort of cautionary tale, both women are proud of the outcome of their research, eager to share their story and ready to encourage others to consider their own research.

As Gepfer explained, the program will focus on the pair’s acquisition of an antique sampler - a small piece of cross-stitch - created by Maytown resident Ann Frances Breneman in 1855.

“We’ll explain how to research someone’s family history, and we’ll share the tools we used. We’ll provide tips for researching genealogy

Heydt, a retired Donegal High School teacher, is the co-owner of needlework design studio The Old Man and the Bea with her husband, Bruce.

The women met while serving on a committee to build a community playground.

“We originally connected through our love of quilts and cross-stitch,” Gepfer stated.

“That connection deepened and broadened when we joined the Delaware Valley Historic Sampler Guild.”

For their April presentation, the women will split responsibilities of the program. “I’ve written the presentation for this meeting because of my Maytown connections, and Susan will be interjecting throughout. She has

a wealth of knowledge,” Gepfer said, noting that a version of the program will also be presented to their guild in June via Zoom.

“The second presentation will be geared more to samplers than this program, which is geared toward Maytown history.”

When she says she finds

research addicting, Gepfer is not kidding. She spent hours learning all she could about Breneman and the sampler, which she acquired via a needlework auction a few years ago.

“The title of our presentation … is derived from how easy it is to get lost in all of the family

In March, Mount Joy Borough Authority officials, project partners and members of the community gathered to break ground on the new Mount Joy Borough Municipal Complex. The project, located at 300 Orchard Road, will address accessibility and space issues facing the current facility at 21 E. Main St.

“The existing building, which houses the borough office, Authority staff and police department, is outdated, undersized and not ADA compliant,” explained Mark Pugliese, borough manager. “The new facility will be fully accessible and include modern meeting spaces for public gatherings and council sessions.”

The council chambers at the new site will also double as an emergency operations command center, enhancing the borough’s emergency response capabilities.

“The project aims to create a more efficient, accessible and secure environment for municipal operations while strengthening community engagement and resilience,” Pugliese stated. The new complex is set to open in March 2026, and the process of developing the site

Aggressive-driving enforcement initiative posted

Fifty-three local law enforcement agencies in Lancaster, Adams, Perry, and York counties are joining Pennsylvania State Police and approximately 300 municipal agencies statewide to conduct a targeted aggressive-driving enforcement wave that began March 17 and will run through Sunday, April 27.

The goal of targeted enforcement is to reduce

the number of aggressive driving-related crashes, injuries, and deaths on roadways throughout the state. Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket.

The enforcement wave will focus on distracted driving, speeding, and work zone awareness. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or other

aggressive actions, will also be cited.

The enforcement is part of Pennsylvania’s Highway Safety Program and is funded by part of PennDOT’s investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

For more information on aggressive driving, visit www.penndot.pa.gov/ safety.

Historical society sets program

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host a contingent from the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster as the guest speakers at the historical society’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

The program will be “The Patriot Daughters’ Story.” During the Civil War, numerous societiesoften referred to as ladies’ aid societies - were formed in the North and South by women wishing to support the troops and contribute to the war effort. Ten days after the firing on Fort Sumter, Lancaster women met to organize the Patriot Daughters of Lancaster. The initial purpose of the organization was to raise funds and provide food and supplies for soldiers in local companies of Pennsylvania regiments. The ladies’ aid societies

in smaller towns in the county coordinated their efforts to knit socks, sew needed articles of clothing, and collect supplies for hospitals. Lancaster men then accompanied wagons and train cars loaded with provisions to sites of major battles. The upcoming slideshow presentation will feature re-enactors in period dress reading from eyewitness accounts, letters, and newspaper articles.

Refreshments and tours of the museum will follow the program. The meeting is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted.

The historical society building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., offering opportunities to view the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia.

Richardson announces retirement from YMCA

The YMCA of the Roses has announced that after 31 years of service, Larry Richardson, CEO and president, will retire on Thursday, July 31. Richardson first joined the organization in October 1994, when it was still known as the YMCA of York and York County, and he has since played a pivotal role in shaping its growth, impact, and mission.

Throughout his tenure, Richardson worked closely with the board, donors, stakeholders, members, and staff members to expand the organization’s reach and deepen its community impact. His leadership was instrumental in the development and expansion of the W. Dale Brougher Foundation YMCA in Shrewsbury and the opening of the Graham Aquatic Center, an aquatic center and recreation pool. Under his guidance, the York campus, Arthur J. Glatfelter YMCA, grew to include a community park and a state-ofthe-art tech center to help increase access to education and recreation.

Passionate about invest-

ing in the next generation, Richardson played a key role in bringing youth programs to the YMCA of the Roses. Programs such as Temple Guard and Young Thinkers of York continue to provide young people with mentorship, leadership development, and the skills to create meaningful change in their communities.

Under Richardson’s leadership, the Y strengthened the relationship between York and Lancaster counties, fostering collaboration and expanding services across the region. Richardson played a key role in guiding the organization through its merger with Lancaster Family YMCA, which led to the formation of the YMCA of the Roses. This merger expanded the Y’s reach, allowing the organization to enhance the programs and resources available to those in need.

Through his leadership, Richardson played a key role in fostering relationships with donors and strengthening the Roses Society. His commitment to stewardship has helped inspire individ-

uals to consider legacy gifts to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Y’s mission.

Throughout his career, Richardson was committed to addressing housing insecurity and homelessness in the region. He helped implement the Y Community Development Corporation (YCDC) to provide affordable housing in York, expanded the Arthur J. Glatfelter YMCA to include more than 100 rooms for homeless men, and played a key role in advocating for the Y to operate a low-barrier homeless shelter in Lancaster. His leadership ensured that these initiatives provided support and resources to those in need.

Richardson also championed the construction plan of a new branch in Spring Grove, set to open later this year.

To ensure a smooth transition, the board of directors has established a transition committee to guide the organization through its next chapter.

ASPIE artists plan spring show at

ASPIE, a nonprofit dedicated to creating supplemental income for adult artisans with disabilities, will hold its annual spring gallery show on Saturday, April 19, at a new venue: the Booth Ferris Room at the Steinman College Center on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. Steinman College Center is located off College Avenue. The show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event is made possible by cooperative work between ASPIE and the college’s Best Buddies chapter. Best Buddies is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment,

leadership development, inclusive living, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

As ASPIE enters its second decade of operation in 2025, its member artisans generate income through donations for their original artwork via the online ASPIE Gallery at www.aspieartists.com and the more recently opened in-person gallery at 1905 Barton Drive, Lancaster. Donors make it possible for artists with disabilities to show their work and grow more independent.

Artists who will be highlighted in the April 19 show include Jesse Buckwalter, a photographer from Lancaster; Jonathan Whitlock, a painter from Lancaster; Dorrin Gingrich, a painter

from Macon, Ga.; JP Henry, a photographer from Earleville, Md.; Kate Manners, a pour painter from Lancaster; Steven Georges, a metal artist from Mount Joy; and Malcolm Corley, a painter from Lancaster.

Several of these artists will attend a portion of the gallery show. In addition, a musical presentation by the Harmonic Crooners will occur from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Harmonic Crooners is an ensemble from the Adult Enrichment chorus led by Annette Whitlock, an ASPIE board member.

Adult Enrichment is a day program for adults with disabilities operated by United Disabilities Services.

expert researcher, getting started on the hobby of genealogy or just interested in local history, the program will offer something for everyone, Gepfer said. It will also offer clues to a special connection Breneman had to Maytown.

“A 2009 study by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates and CenterPoint Engineering evaluated the current municipal building … and identified significant issues,” Pugliese shared. “The structure, originally two separate buildings joined by an addition, is outdated, with aging mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems nearing the end of their lifespan. The roof, except for the police station wing, has outlived its usefulness, and the building has reached maximum capacity, leaving no room for future growth.”

The general condition of both the interior and exterior of the complex also requires substantial maintenance, he said, adding, “These factors prompted the decision to construct a new municipal complex to better serve the needs of the community.”

At the groundbreaking, Mount Joy Borough Council president William Hall addressed attendees and reflected on the long history of the site.

“The land on which we stand holds a special place in our community,” he said. “For many years, this site

was home to the Grandview Elementary School, where generations of students learned and grew. It was a place of knowledge, development and a place that shaped the future of many young minds. As we break ground today, we honor that history by creating a new space dedicated to the service and betterment of Mount Joy.”

Josh Deering, chairman of the Building Ad Hoc Committee, also addressed the crowd, recognizing the hard work and dedication that led to this significant milestone.

“The path to this moment was not without its challenges,” he remarked. “Today we stand at the beginning of a new chapter, one that will benefit our employees, our residents and the future of this borough for a very long time to come.”

The new complex has a price tag of more than $10 million. The complex was designed by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates. It is being built by eciConstruction.

For more information about the municipal complex project, contact the Mount Joy Borough office at 717-653-2300.

tree branches that you find while researching just one person,” she explained. “Every time you add a person to a tree, you get hints or clues about that person’s relatives, and when you add those relatives, you get more hints about other relatives and so on and so on. Plus, you will probably be adding family members that came before and after your original person. The research of Ann Frances Breneman produced a five-page family tree, and it would have been much larger if I hadn’t forced myself to bring it to a close.”

Both Gepfer and Heydt enjoy textile research and hope to pass that passion along to others.

“We both love learning the history of the stitchers and their families,” Gepfer remarked. “It’s all about sharing our love for textiles - quilts and samplers - and the history behind them with others in the hope that these crafts will continue for many more generations to come. It’s also all about the joy of creating, and, for Susan and her husband, Bruce, the joy of designing through their business.”

“We hope our presentation will be of interest to anyone who shares our love of samplers and cross-stitch and anyone wanting to research their genealogy,” she said. “We hope to have the patterns available for the reproduction of the Ann Frances Breneman 1855 sampler.” They hope to raise money for the Maytown Historical Society’s archive project through the sale of the patterns.

“We’ll unveil the model that I stitched from Susan’s reproduction,” Gepfer said, “and we’ll reveal through our presentation the person who held a position of importance in Maytown and was Frances’ great-granddaughter.” For more information on the Maytown Historical Society, search for the organization on Facebook. The society’s museum is located at 4 W. High St., Maytown.

Advoz plans trainings

Advoz will offer Introduction to Conflict and Restorative Justice Conferencing Training. Participants must first attend the introductory “Conflict, Communication and Culture” training on Friday, April 25. The program will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the S. Dale High Leadership Center, 1861 William Penn Way, Lancaster. This training is required to receive a certificate for “Introduction to Conflict and Restorative Justice Conferencing Training,” and participants will need to register for both trainings separately.

Introduction to Conflict and Restorative Justice Conferencing Training will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. via Zoom on Tuesdays, April 29, May 6, and May 13, as well as in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17. This course includes two to three hours of self-directed learning online in between live sessions.

The course aims to help participants gain restorative

conflict resolution skills and learn to apply them to situations involving youths and adults who are part of the local justice system. Attendees will learn to facilitate healing conversations that seek to address harm, enhance accountability, and develop resilience among young people involved in Advoz’s Restorative Justice Conferencing program.

To register for “Conflict, Communication and Culture” by Thursday, April 17, visit https://advoz .charityproud.org/Event Registration/Index/20703. Registration for the rest of the sessions is available at https://advoz.charityproud .org/EventRegistration/ Index/16040.

Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Practices has offered services for youths, adults, families, organizations, and communities in Lancaster County since 1981, previously as the Lancaster Mediation Center and Center for Community Peacemaking. To learn more, visit www.advoz.org or call 717-397-2404.

Garden club sets meeting

The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will present “19th-Century Family Kitchen Garden” on Thursday, April 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster.

Patrick Clarke, director of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland, will share how American family gardens in the 19th century were influenced by European cultures. Both urban and rural Americans were taught the value of a well-planned garden to

provide a healthy diet and a source of medicinal remedies for their family. Clarke will share aspects of historical gardening and how they may be relevant in today’s gardens.

Refreshments will be served following the meeting. Guests are welcome to attend by donation. For more details, email Kathy at KRASgardener@yahoo.com.

To learn more about the club, search for “Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County” on Facebook.
