Mount Joy Rotary To Offer Free Shredding Event BY FRANCINE FULTON
T
he Rotary Club of Mount Joy invites community members to keep their identities safe by bringing their personal papers to its fourth annual shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9-11 a.m., at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. The service is free, but cash donations for the Mount Joy Borough Christmas tree lights and ornament fund will be received at the event. This year’s shredding event, postponed from April, has been adjusted because of COVID-19. Everyone is being asked not to place their shreddable items in plastic totes or boxes that need to be returned. “To maintain safe social distancing, (attendees should) put papers for shredding into disposable paper or cardboard containers and place them into their car’s trunk or truck’s back storage area,” explained event chairman Ron Carpenter. “The Rotary volunteers will remove your items from the storage compartment to take to the shredding vehicle (from Tri-State Shredding). It
will be impractical to return containers this year.” Items that should be shredded include bank statements, copies of birth certificates, canceled and voided checks and credit card bills. “Once you are finished with your personal, private papers, you need to shred them because identity theft is a real possibility,” advised Rotary public relations director Barbara Basile, who is also the library director. “(This includes) loan documents, old tax (returns), paperwork from an estate and passports that are out of date.” Hosting a free shredding event for the community is just one activity of the Mounty Joy Rotary Club. The club developed and maintains the Rotary Park in Mount Joy and conducts a Student of the Month program. It also operates a fundraising fry wagon, which offers homemade french fries, as well as hot dogs. In May, club members distributed free food from the fry wagon in the community, also collected donations for the Mount Joy Food Bank. “We do a lot of volunteer work and support both local and international causes,” Basile
pointed out, noting that the club helped fund the library’s new roof and recently made a donation to the Rainbow’s End Youth Center for student backpacks. The club meets on Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. An alternate meeting is offered at 5 p.m. on Thursdays at Twisted Bine, 93 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “We share a meal together, we have a lot of conversation and we talk about upcoming events,” said Basile. “We frequently have a speaker. A past speaker was about diversification in business to cope with the COVID crisis.” The club currently has between 25 and 40 active members. “Those who want to belong to a civic organization are encouraged to join our club,” Basile said. “(Members) are dedicated to making Mount Joy the best it possibly can be.” For more information about the club or any of its projects, readers may visit www.facebook .com/mountjoyrotary or www.mount joyrotary.org. Those interested in becoming a club member should contact Greg Sallade at 717-648-0510.
UCEA Breaks Ground At CPOW BY ANN MEAD ASH
Deb Jones, executive director of ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services), knows that many Elizabethtown and Mount Joy area residents have been waiting for the groundbreaking that occurred at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. “It was a longtime dream of community members to have a social services agency here in Elizabethtown,” said Jones. “It was decades.” That dream began to come to fruition in 2018 when United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) secured the Washington Street property, now known as Community Place on Washington (CPOW). The property formerly was a private school associated with St. Peter Catholic Church. On Sept. 11, ground was broken to expand that building to house a larger Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) compliant winter shelter and enrichment services, including job skills training, career and financial See UCEA pg 4

Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. When Gardner retired, the two younger men decided to form a partnership to buy the business, pledging a commitment to five-star service, experience, and products for their customers. Together, Giagnocavo and McClure have written buying guides, hosted seminars, and held events to connect with the community and educate the public on the ways Gardner’s Mattress & More can meet individuals’ sleep needs. The business partners introduced the Dream Room and customer lounge shopping concepts, and they give back to the community with the Gardner’s Gives Back food drive. Gardner’s Mattress & More has won 11 consecutive Reader’s Choice Awards for Lancaster’s Favorite Mattress Store. In February, Giagnocavo published “Sleep Better,” and free copies may be obtained by stopping by the store, 830 Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, during October. “It’s the culmination of his experience and knowledge base and clearly identifies where people struggle to get quality sleep and how we might be able to help them in our store,” McClure commented. “Of course, nothing in the book was written in a vacuum,” Giagnocavo added. “We succeed together as a team, and at Gardner’s, I’m the abrupt, hard-charging personality in the company, always pushing to do better. Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together.” The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs

Currently, ECHOS, the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, the Clothing Barn, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), and the Elizabethtown Area HUB are housed at CPOW. Doug Lamb, UCEA chaplain, said that the organization purchased the original property with a plan to expand. “We knew that all the programs and services we wanted to provide would not fit in the existing buildings,” he said, adding that UCEA was drawn to the property by the open baseball field and playground areas that were part of the campus.

The number of clients who are served by the center has grown significantly since CPOW opened. Lamb reported that the food pantry had seen a large increase in clients, serving as many as 165 families per month. Jones noted that need for the winter shelter increased by 20% last year, when the organization served more than 70 individuals. In ECHOS’ past fiscal year, 800 individuals were helped. Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance, which includes Manheim Borough, Rapho Township, and Penn Township, will host a cleanup event on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. The cleanup event will take place at the floodplain along Rife Run in Mummau and Logan parks, West High Street (Route 772), Manheim. The spring 2020 cleanup, registered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, was canceled due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Volunteers are invited to participate in the rescheduled event while working socially distanced, primarily in household groups, and wearing masks out of respect for one another’s well-being, where appropriate. This event is especially recommended for families with children of elementary school age and older. Individuals, Scout troops, church groups, neighbors, and others are also welcome. Participants should dress for the weather and wear long pants, socks, and closed-toe

The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creating its Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee, which says, “If you don’t love your mattress, we’ll exchange it for one you do love, with no fees, costs, or delivery charges.” Buying mattresses is a highly subjective process, Giagnocavo explained. “We can offer, spec for spec, the highest quality mattresses at each

The Gardner’s team has developed a simple process devoid of buy-it-today high pressure and dubious sales tactics. “You’ll see us out and about in town. Lady Booters Top Octorara, Lanc. Mennonite knocked in her second and third just minutes apart, bringing the Indians’ tally to five. Amber James guarded the Donegal goal and gathered eight saves. Tuesday, the squad edged past Lancaster Mennonite, 1-0. The lowscoring showdown displayed a cohesive Indians team, relying on each other to get the job done. “I’m pleased with our ability to rebound after a tough loss,” pointed out head coach Ben Sarro, referencing the previous week’s 8-1 loss to Cocalico. “Two of our wins have come after a loss, and in both games, we hit some type of adversity early on. It would have been easy to roll over and not finish those games strong.” After 49 tenacious minutes on the field, left forward Hayley Bauer notched the lone goal of the contest, assisted by Hannah Dunn. On the opposite end of the field, the Donegal defense worked together to hold the Blazers scoreless,

FIELD HOCKEY Donegal field hockey ended last week’s three-game schedule on a high note, earning back-to-back wins over Elizabethtown and Cocalico after slipping behind Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday. Thursday, the club hosted the Elizabethtown Bears and handed them a 3-1 defeat, with all of the scoring coming in the first half. Midfielder Emma Miller scored two of Donegal’s goals and the third came off the stick of Morgan Mullhausen. Julianne Wheeler and Paige Miller were each credited with an assist, and Donegal goalie CC Emswiler snatched up five saves. The night before, the Indians got

Mennonite. “Today was about effort, and I told the team afterwards that they put forth a tremendous effort and looked great, like a championship team,” summarized Koser. The last regular season meet is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13 at Eastern Lebanon County High School and will hold stiff competition, including the Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers (7-0), the only other undefeated team in Section Two. “We are looking forward to our next race on a flat ELCO course. Although the Section championship is on the line, our focus is on running our fastest time of the season and preparing for the post-season,” concluded Koser.

including seven saves from keeper Rena Rankin, to earn their first shutout of the season. “I can’t say enough about Rena Rankin, our senior goalkeeper. She hasn’t let in a bad goal yet,” praised Sarro. “Our senior defenders, Maddie Sheffer and Aysha Gibbs have really set the tone as well.” CROSS COUNTRY Indians cross country continues to cruise past their challengers, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams collecting another pair of victories in last week’s meet at Lancaster Mennonite. Garden Spot and Lancaster Mennonite were the latest opponents to fall behind the Donegal harriers, boosting the Indians record to an untarnished, 9-0 record for both teams. In the boys’ race, the first four jerseys to cross the finish line bore the Donegal crest, led by individual meet winner Brock Overlander clocking a 17:12 race. “Brock ran a great race and was only 16 seconds off the course record for a Donegal runner,” noted head coach Philip Koser. Hunter Gehman (17:51), Sam Rothstein (18:08), and Logan Fry (18:10) quickly followed to claim the top four spots. John Spackman’s 18:33 and Noah Hinkel’s 18:37 were good enough for sixth and eighth respectively. Myra Naqvi, pacesetter for the DHS girls, didn’t disappoint and picked up her third individual win of the season with her 21:03 race. Teammates Amanda Fry (21:37), Hadley Shoaf (21:40), Rachel Fernald (22:20), and Kendall Finicle (23:06) finished in succession to claim the top five spots for Donegal, providing more than enough momentum for wins over Garden Spot and Lancaster

Donegal girls’ soccer added two more wins to their 2020 season last week, taking down the Octorara Braves and the Lancaster Mennonite Blazers. The Lady Indians led by one at the half against Octorara last Thursday, but opened a scoring blitz in the second to eventually take the contest, 5-1. Donegal’s Laken Merchant
notched the only goal in the first half, her first of the season, but the sophomore still had plenty left to accomplish in the second half, ending the contest with a hat trick. Octorara managed to break past the Donegal defense to chip in a tying goal with 26 minutes remaining, but rather than shut down, the challenge sparked a fire in the Indians, leading to four more goals in the final 25 minutes of play. Reagan Cook and Hayley Bauer each netted a goal, and Merchant

ahead early and hung on for a 2-1 triumph over the Cocalico Eagles. Paige Miller put Donegal on the scoreboard with a goal in the first period, assisted by Madison Leety. With five minutes remaining in the third, E. Miller worked her way through traffic to create an open look and secured an unassisted goal. “It was great to see our team come and get an early 2-0 lead,” praised head coach Amanda Misselhorn. “We have been playing strong and passing the ball well through the midfield, so it was great to see our team finish with some pretty goals in the scoring circle.” The Eagles responded with a lategame goal of their own, but the Indians remained unrattled and contained Cocalico for the duration of the contest. E. Miller was also a highlight on Monday, notching Donegal’s lone goal in a 6-1 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. The Pioneers put together a formidable attack (12 shots, 10 corners), to test the Indians, and Donegal keeper CC Emswiler came up with seven saves in the loss. BOYS’ SOCCER DHS boys’ soccer experienced a 30 setback from Lancaster Mennonite during their only weekday contest last week. The Tuesday night event took place at Donegal’s field, and despite Neville Ncube, the Indians’ keeper, snatching up five saves, the Blazers were able to breech the goal line three times to take home the victory. Ever shuffling schedules is a common theme in the 2020 season, and a postponed Octorara contest left the Indians with a few days’ hiatus before another opportunity to improve on their 2-2 league record. Up next, the club expects to face opponents Eastern Lebanon County and Solanco.
