When 14-year-old Matthew Hay sets out to do something, he puts in 100% effort, and the Eagle Scout project he is currently working on is no different. A Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 39 in Mount Joy, Matthew decided to build a veterans memorial in the Mount Joy Cemetery, 275 Terrace Road, as part of the journey to earn his Eagle Scout ranking. “It’s because my dad is a veteran,” explained Matthew, whose father, Joshua Hay, served in the United States Navy from 2001 to 2008. In a letter that Matthew wrote and sent to local businesses to explain his project and seek financial support for the project, he discussed the importance of honoring local veterans. Matthew came up with the idea of building a veterans memorial while participating in putting

flags at the cemetery with his troop. “This memorial will provide a place for the entire community to honor and remember our veterans,” wrote Matthew in the letter. The memorial is going to be installed in the middle of the cemetery in a circular grass area approximately 57 feet in diameter with a 46-foot walking path through the center. In June 2019, Matthew and his fellow Scouts, along with other teenage and adult volunteers from the community, installed the walking path that now runs through the center of the area where the memorial will be. After brainstorming, Matthew drew the design for the memorial on paper before working together with his uncle, who is an engineer, to create a 3-D CAD image that he included in the letters he mailed. Approximately $25,000 is needed for the entire project, and Matthew said See Veterans Memorial pg 3

Members of Boy Scout Troop 39 in Mount Joy helped Matthew Hay to lay a walking path for the veterans memorial he is in the process of constructing at the Mount Joy Cemetery for his Eagle Scout project.

Farm Show

ELIZABETHTOWN EDITION

2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. Admission is free; however, there is a parking fee in all Farm Show Complex-operated lots. Among the more than 6,000 animals that will be part of this year’s Farm Show are several lambs, pigs, and rabbits that have been raised and cared for by the Zimmerman brothers at the family’s farmette in rural Manheim. Tyler, 16, and Eric, 15 - now in their sixth and fifth years, respectively, of participating in the statewide competition - will each be entering one lamb and one pig. Ten-yearold Drew will enter a lamb and a pig, along with three rabbits. Transporting all of those animals to the Farm Show Complex in time for their competitions will take three trips. “It’s going to be an all-nighter,” said the boys’ mother, Tracy Zimmerman, with a laugh. But that driving time, plus all of the unseen effort leading up to it, is more than worth it for Tracy and her husband, Ryan Zimmerman, who hope to develop and instill a lifelong hard work ethic in their sons through projects like this. “It teaches them responsibility,” noted Ryan. “And commitment and follow-through,” added Tracy. Ryan and Tracy met in FFA when they were attending Manheim Central High School (MCHS). Now Tyler and Eric are involved in FFA at MCHS, and all three boys participate in 4-H. The brothers wake up early every morning to feed and tend to their animals and return in the evening to make sure each animal has fresh water and food. Eric explained that exercising the animals is another important part of the routine to build muscle and to prepare for the main event. “That way they aren’t as anxious in the show,” noted Eric. In addition to being judged for livestock show class awards at the Farm

Show, each contestant is judged on showmanship. Eric, Tyler, and Drew spend hours guiding the animals at home to ensure the animals are ready for the show ring. They practice in various environments and employ tactics like playing a radio so that the animals are not as overwhelmed by all the noise that will surround them 24/7 at the Farm Show. Each animal is washed before traveling to the Farm Show and again before entering the show ring. “Sheep take a lot of work,” noted Tracy. Each lamb will be sheared at home and at the Farm Show in addition to getting washed and blowdried to make it look its best. “I’m very competitive, so I like the challenge of getting them ready,” said Eric. He earned Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Pennsylvania Farm Show. With Eric and Tyler being so close in age, they often end up competing in the same division which naturally intensifies the competition. Collectively, the family has achieved a lengthy list of accolades at local fairs, including Champion Market Hog and Reserve Champion Lightweight Market Hog at the 2017 Manheim Farm Show, Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Ephrata Fair, Reserve Champion Market Hog at the 2017 Elizabethtown Fair, and Grand Champion Market Hog at the 2016 Elizabethtown Fair. “It’s fun showing the animals,” remarked Tyler. “You work a while, and you get to show what you accomplished. At the big shows like this, you’re amazed by how many people are into this.” In addition to animals, the Pennsylvania Farm Show will feature hundreds of exhibitors, vendors, and demonstrations; a 1,000-pound butter sculpture; and an assortment of food and beverages. County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Envi-

ronmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of the nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

Giving Tree from pg 1 East High Street Elementary School recently held its annual Giving Tree project to help local families experiencing financial difficulty during the holiday season to purchase presents for their children. Coordinated by the school’s counseling department and PTO, the Giving Tree allowed the school’s faculty, administration, staff, and PTO to give back to the community in which they work and/or live by purchasing gifts from a wish list supplied by the families in need of assistance. The Giving Tree has become a tradition at East High Street Elementary. In total, 136 children in the community were slated to receive individually wrapped gifts as a result of the program. So far, he estimates that he has put more than 300 hours into the project. “It’s a huge undertaking, but it’s typical for him to not take the easy way out,” Joshua said. “He has come up with the whole thing on his own. He always has to do something that’s over the top.” Matthew is homeschooled and has been involved with Boy Scouts since he was 8 years old. He also participates in the Lancaster Archery Club and attends church at LCBC - Manheim Campus. that $13,000 has been donated thus far. As more funds come in, Matthew will complete the rest of the project. Seven flagpoles will be installed: one with an American flag and POW/MIA flag and the others holding the flags representing each branch of the military. Two aluminum benches will flank either side of the walkway. A large granite memorial will be placed at the end of the walkway and will be engraved with an American flag and the following tribute: “In honor of all service members who have fought and will fight for our freedom and our country and in memory of those who have given their lives in defense of our liberty, WE SALUTE YOU! Land of the free because of the BRAVE.” Matthew came up with the wording with help from his great-uncle, who is a retired United States Army general. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke on stage, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides complete with sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests will receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. Harbor 180 will kick off at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy, on Monday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. The program will continue to be held each Monday. Harbor 180, hosted by a core group of leaders, has been developed in response to the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and other issues. It is designed to be a safe and confidential place for youths in sixth through 12th grades to express themselves and learn necessary tools to find victory over their pain. The goal is for students to find true healing as they work through Christ-centered principles among a community of peers and adult leaders. For more information, readers may call Gail Hoover at 717-330-3753.

stated Ketchum. “Parents and caretakers get to see their child dressed up and given the royal treatment for one night. So many of the parents come up to me and the other volunteers that night in tears, thanking us for doing it.” “This is the only time that a lot of the parents will get to see their kids dressed up like this. A lot of these guests will never get to have their own wedding or go to a gala or an event that’s just for them,” continued Ketchum. “This is something showing them that we value them and God values them.” More than 550 volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 event, and organizers are seeking volunteers to help in a number of ways for 2020. Interested individuals may learn more and sign up at www.gbclancaster.org/night2shine. Donations may also be made at that website. Readers may also contact Ketchum at 717-314-7125 or j_bomb_67@yahoo.com for more information.
