Frozen Foot Race Series Enters 30th Year By Chelsea Peifer

The Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series is back for its 30th year. The three-race series will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. Participants who complete all three races will now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots

Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.appliedracemgmt.com/events. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom longsleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage will be posted directing participants to the area. See Frozen Foot pg 7

The 30th annual Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series will offer three Sunday afternoon races at Elizabethtown College on Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17. New for 2019 is the addition of finishers’ medals for those who complete all three races.

Power Packs - Serving And Growing GBC, Manheim BIC To Host Night To Shine By Ann Mead Ash

By Chelsea Peifer

Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using lowcost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs

GBC has hosted a Night to Shine for the past two years, and event coordinator Joell Ketcham said that GBC decided to try a new and larger location for 2019. The event will take place on Friday, Feb. 8, in the gymnasium at Manheim BIC, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. See Night To Shine pg 8

faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should

be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.” In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and

GEARS Posts Program Schedule empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-at-Home Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round. Readers who would like to learn more about the program or sign up to volunteer may visit the organization’s redesigned website at www.powerpacksproject.org.

Honoring Veterans from pg 1 On Dec. 14, 2018, the Harrisburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) placed 230 name-specific wreaths at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to honor those who have served. These special placements were laid by volunteers, and a picture of each headstone with the wreath was taken to be sent to the relatives who had ordered the placement. Again on Dec. 15, members of the Harrisburg Chapter of the DAR, along with other DAR members from around the state, attended the memorial ceremony and assisted with laying the thousands of wreaths still to be placed. The Harrisburg Chapter contributed more than 700 wreaths. Through this effort and the efforts of many other organizations and individuals, every grave at the Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery had a wreath during the holiday season. Christmas Tree Recycling Set County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster

Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition -

Three Elizabethtown Area School District students were recently recognized as “Do the Right Thing” winners for the month of October. Rylee Gallagher, a third-grade student at Rheems Elementary School, was recognized for being aware of the needs of a fellow student. Callie Hammer, a firstgrade student at Bainbridge Elementary School, was recognized for lending a helping hand to a classmate who fell at recess. Elizabethtown Area High School junior Madison Williams was recognized for inviting students who were sitting alone to join her table at lunch and for helping create a positive culture in the school lunchroom. The students’ good deeds were acknowledged at ceremonies held recently at their respective schools, where they received a certificate of recognition, a “Do the Right Thing” T-shirt, and a gift certificate. “Do the Right Thing” is a national program and a collaborative effort between Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), the local police departments, and

the Elizabethtown Area School District. The program seeks to recognize students in the community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or outstanding efforts, and it emphasizes random acts of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a student. A volunteer committee reviews nominations and selects a winner or winners for each month. Nomination forms are available at www.eactc.org. EACTC is a community organization committed to improving the lives of children, youths, and families in the Elizabethtown area. Using research-based programs, initiatives, and strategies, the organization guides and encourages youths in making positive choices about alcohol, drugs, and high-risk behaviors. EACTC partners with the schools, parents, churches, and businesses to make positive changes in the community.

Frozen Foot from pg 1 Following each race, hot homemade soup will be served. Awards will be presented at approximately 3:15 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win door prize giveaways. Individual event awards will be bestowed upon the overall male and female winners, the masters male and female winners, and the first-, second- and third-place male and female winners for each five-year age group. Series awards, which will be presented at a ceremony at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on March 17, will include prize money for the overall male and female winners and the masters male and female winners. Additional prizes will be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated -

perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. For more information on the Frozen Foot 5K Race Series, interested individuals may visit the aforementioned website or call Wells at 717-580-6983.

Night To Shine from pg 1 People age 14 and older with special needs are invited to attend and may register at https://gbclancaster.org/night2shine by Friday, Jan. 25. Admission is free. “One of (Tebow’s) purposes in doing (Night to Shine) is to change the trajectory of how we think of Valentine’s Day,” explained Ketcham. In planning out the details, Ketcham’s goal is to make the experience as over-the-top and memorable as possible for each person who attends. “We have about 12 churches that partner with us now, and we try to knock it out of the park. I want it to be the kind of thing that when they walk in the door, it wows them,” shared Ketcham. “I want them to feel that we took time and really thought about them, because they deserve it.” Guests will be greeted by what Ketcham described as friendly paparazzi - ranging from photographers to local mascots such as Cylo - surrounding a red carpet entrance. Formal doormen will direct attendees to a registration area where they will meet a volunteer buddy whom they will be paired with for the evening. Hair and makeup and shoe

shining services will be offered, too. Following a seated formal dinner, guests will have the chance to dance, sing karaoke, pose in a photo booth, play cornhole, win door prizes, get treats from the ice cream parlor and coffee station, and take limousine rides. “The limos are a big hit,” noted Ketcham. Each ride is a short loop, but organizers pull out all the stops for guests, offering them sparkling cider and other goodies to add to the thrill. Upon their return to the building, guests receive a crown and sash as their name is announced on the red carpet. Each guest will receive a printed photo of themself on the red carpet and a goodie bag chock full of healthy snacks and other fun items donated by local businesses. A parent and caregiver respite lounge will also be provided. Night to Shine events will be hosted by approximately 700 churches around the world on the same date, and Ketcham emphasized that everything is made possible through donations and volunteer efforts. “We get a lot of thank-yous from the parents and guests,” Ketcham shared.

“Some have said that this is the first time their child has gotten to do something normal that was just for them. A lot of people just talk about the unconditional love that they felt.” Volunteers are needed for the Night to Shine event, and interested individuals may sign up at https://gbclancaster.org /night2shine, where they will have the option to select their top three choices for ways to serve. Options vary from helping with setup, parking, registration, coat check, food preparation or service, beverage stations, and cleanup and teardown to providing assistance with karaoke, the dance floor, the red carpet, first aid, and more. Individuals age 16 and older are welcome to sign up to serve as buddies for guests. Financial donations are also needed, along with donations of items for goodie bags and door prizes. The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations, preschools and senior

communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities. The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project. The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies. The Shalom Project is a one-year

voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional internships; and participate in seminars focused on Christian spiritual formation and personal growth. The program covers all of the participants’ living expenses, including housing, transportation, and food. For more information about The Shalom Project, readers may visit http://shalomlancaster.org.

Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to facilitate a

contemplative mode of worship and to help Kim choose wonder, praise, and gratitude in response to a challenging time in his life. Kim is an American artist who was born in South Korea in the late 1970s. He took up studio art and music performance as a child. At age 7, he became fascinated with basic generative design in a computer programming class. He is an advocate of art as an agent for telling stories and as a medium of renewal. He considers art integral to the narrative of his personal pilgrimage in human portrait and faith. Attendees of the First Friday event will be able to meet the artist, read some of the handwritten verses, and enjoy snacks.

Winter Driving Safety Tips Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000

Your

snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of fourlane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined. With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on lesstraveled routes and should adjust their

driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or icecovered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, allseason tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or

vehicle emergencies, especially if longdistance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. For more information on PennDOT, winter preparations, and additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.penndot.gov.
