Museum Offers E-Learning Classes BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ike many places, Winters Heritage House Museum had to adapt to changes this past year. When the pandemic forced the site to temporarily close its doors at 47 E. High St. in Elizabethtown, it also opened an opportunity. “With nobody coming into the museum, we wanted to have a way for our staff to keep contributing to our mission, and we came up with ideas that could all be done virtually,” said Nancy Landis, museum director. The museum launched a series of e-learning courses with topics including crafts, recipes and science lessons. “ We sat down as a staff and started brainstorming ideas of things we thought would be fun for people to do,” Landis noted. “These are all things people did to entertain themselves in the days before TV.” Topics are geared toward children
L
but can be adapted for adults as well, she said. “We have a lesson on scherenschnitte, which is German scissors cutting. You can download patterns and print them out,” she explained. “We have a unit on embroidery. Kids love this. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much kids love to sew.” Other crafts include a print-andfold Conestoga wagon and packhorse train. “Many people don’t realize how important packhorse trains were to early transportation,” Landis stated. “These lessons give people an opportunity to learn as they are being entertained.” Recipes in the e-learning series include everything from homemade ice cream to Irish shortbread. “We came up with recipes that kids can help with,” Landis said. “Kids were definitely in our minds when we were coming up with topics. Most of the recipes are very simple, and we tastetested everything.”

to put an innovative twist on general contracting. Using their 40 combined years of expertise in real estate and restaurant construction, renovation, and remodeling, Schoenberger and DeArment strive to create unique functional spaces using quality products and workmanship. As a Realtor and the owner of Homegrown Outdoor Finishes, DeArment has an eye for enhancing a property’s perceived value and improving its appeal. He noted that his real-time experience with design and interior trends has helped Four Walls quickly break into a competitive industry. Schoenberger has served as project manager for the design, construction, and opening of six restaurants, including quick service and upscale casual. The skills learned in that process can be applied to the management of any home improvement project. “As a restaurant general manager and owner, you learn to be very hands-on within your four walls. That’s how the (business) name was derived,” Schoenberger explained. “This necessity to save money drives you to learn how to fix, repair, and build anything and everything you can.” Four Walls offers general contracting services, managing projects from start to finish. The business takes the lead in coordinating labor, materials, equipment, vendor partners, and outside resources necessary to complete all aspects of commercial and residential construction projects in Lancaster,
York, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. Four Walls operates with the understanding that listening, leading, and leveraging are critical aspects of positive and productive relationships with clients. “Four Walls takes the burden of calling three electricians, three plumbers, three carpenters, etc., to find the best price and most reliable service (off the customer),” Schoenberger said. “We line up the subcontractors, streamline all costs into one payment, manage the project timeline, and follow up with any issues that arise. From start to finish, we take the work out of your hands.” Schoenberger and DeArment grew up in Elizabethtown and live in the area with their families. They are committed to serving their hometown and surrounding areas. The men are members of Elizabethtown Rotary Club and the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce. Schoenberger was a founder of Main Street Improving Business/Visit Elizabethtown, which was a downtown economic revitalization organization. DeArment has invested in several rental projects to help the community. “(We) both have a personal interest to use (our) experience to make the area better,” Schoenberger remarked. “Four Walls can help improve homes, which will bring more interest to our small town.” Readers are invited to visit www.fourwallsconstruction co.com or call 717-689-5260 for free estimates on their projects.

last year, but this will be first time The Great Create is being held in the business’s new location, which opened in 2020. “If you enjoy watching reality competition shows, why not try your hand at being in one?” he remarked. “There won’t be cameras, of course, but you can compete against other people and show off your skills. It’s going to be a little bit
stressful for people, but that’s the fun of it. We want to hit all types of people for this, from the crafter to the person who is more precise with their art to those who truly have artistic flair. Some will excel, some will struggle, but everyone will have fun.” To register for The Great Create, readers may visit https://horstarts.com/events/ the-great-create/.

Feeling crafty? Head out to Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, on Saturday, Jan. 9, for The Great Create. The event will begin at 3 p.m. “The Great Create is an arts and crafts competition,” said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts. “It’s a little bit like ‘The Great British Baking Show’ but with crafts.” The competition will include three rounds, which will increase in complexity. “The first round doesn’t involve a lot of skill,” Horst said, noting that he didn’t want to reveal too many details ahead of time. “It gets trickier with each round. The second round is more technically challenging. You will follow written instructions and interpret them in your own way. It’s more of a design challenge, and while you’re doing that, you’ll learn about the history of Manheim and some of its notable characters.” For the third round,
participants will make something to take home. “In the last round, you’ll create something beautiful that you can bring home and hang on your wall,” Horst said. “Basically, the first round is about crafting, the second round is about design, and the third round is about being artistic.” Unlike other reality competitions, no one will be eliminated during the event, but winners will be declared for each round as well as an overall winner. W hile this event is for individual competitors, Horst said groups or organizations can reserve times for special events like this one in the future. “This would be a lot of fun for an office party or a bridal shower,” he noted. “For this event on (Jan. 9), you’ll be competing against strangers, so it’s a great way to get to know people. It’s a fun activity and lets you get creative.” Horst held a similar event
theatrical concert experiences featuring well-known music and timely stories, as well as a new end-of-theworld musical in partnership with Broadway’s Nick Blaemire. “Sammy & Sinatra” will be performed in March 2021, featuring the music of Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra and stories about these two Rat Pack legends. “Queen/Journey” will be offered in June 2021. It will showcase the music of the bands Queen and Journey. “Soon” will take the stage
in October 2021. The new end-of-the-world musical with book, music, and lyrics by Nick Blaemire reminds people of the importance of fully embracing life. “On the Naughty List” will be performed in December 2021. It will offer a fresh take on classic holiday songs and stories. Individual tickets are being released in January, with subscriptions and details available at www.primatheatre.org/2021. Several schools in Elizabethtown Area School District helped local families in need this fall. Thirteen local families from the greater Elizabethtown area enjoyed Thanksgiving meals courtesy of Elizabethtown Area Middle School. As part of the school’s annual Feathers for Families program, the school raised money to provide holiday shopping gift cards for families that were facing difficult financial circumstances during the holiday season. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break, the

the members of the school community donated nonperishable food items as part of the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. As a result of their efforts, the families were scheduled to receive food baskets filled with traditional Thanksgiving foods like canned cranberry sauce, canned corn and vegetables, stovetop stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, and gravy. The families were also to receive a gift certificate for a free turkey, a Giant gift card, and an assortment of personal hygiene and household products like cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and tissues. The school was also able to donate food items to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown to help stock its shelves for the holiday season. As part of the district’s Life Ready Model, student participation in altruistic projects extends learning beyond the school system’s walls. These experiences are intended to empower students to give back to their community and build the foundation to become productive adult citizens.

With a schoolwide focus on giving and gratitude, students brought in nonperishable food items like canned gravy, canned corn and vegetables, instant potatoes, stuffing, instant macaroni and cheese, and canned soups. Students also donated personal care items like soap, shampoo, toilet paper, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. In total, eight families from the Elizabethtown community were scheduled to receive a Thanksgiving food box. The school planned to give any leftover food items to Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. The families also received a voucher for a free Thanksgiving takeout meal from the River House Bar and Grill compliments of a local church.
