This summer, six young men from Lancaster County - ranging in age from 15 to 19 - will be flying to the West Coast to take on a 3,820-mile, 63-day bicycle ride from Oregon to Maine. The Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride is a new undertaking for each of the riders and for Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young men and women of character through bicycling adventures. Retired United States Air Force Col. Lee DeRemer developed the vision for Lifecycles after seeing a transformation of sorts in his nephews after they had conquered a bicycle trip through Montana and Wyoming together. DeRemer had planned that adventure after his nephews lost their father to cancer as a way to spend time together and provide some of the male leadership they were
now missing in their lives. The joy and growth that trip yielded was something DeRemer believed could be replicated on a larger scale. Today, volunteers from Lifecycles lead weekly rides for teenage boys in Landisville, Marietta, and New Holland and for girls in Lititz. More than 80 riders participated in the 2019 season, and more than 160 riders have been a part of Lifecycles since the program began in 2015. A free meal is served, and bicycles, helmets, and shirts are supplied for all participants. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up ahead of time at www.lifecyclesteam.org if they would like to join a ride. Walk-ins are welcome too. Additionally, Lifecycles organizes annual summer challenge rides for participants. The inaugural challenge ride consisted of nine teenagers and seven adult guides pedaling 290 miles to

LBC To Present “Ruth” Musical Building Resilience Through Trauma-Informed Practices By Ann Mead Ash
When David Felty, executive producer, considered bringing the Sight and Sound Theatres original production of “Ruth” to the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) stage, he felt the show, based on one of only two books of the Bible dedicated to the story of a woman, should have a female perspective. With that in mind, he brought in Heather Grayberg to direct and choreograph, along with an all-female creative team that includes Leslie Talley and Gabrielle Hines as assistant directors, Kendra Bigley as music director, Katie Moser as set designer, and women overseeing costumes and props. “Ruth” will be staged on Fridays, Jan. 24 and 31, at 7 p.m.; on Saturdays, See “Ruth” pg 9
By Chelsea Peifer
Preparing for their roles in the Lancaster Bible College production of “Ruth” are (from left) Kayla Valesquez, understudy for the role of Naomi; Samantha Ingram, who will play Naomi; and Delaney Bigley, who is alternating with Kristin Hurdleston in the role of Ruth. The show will play in the college’s Good Shepherd Chapel on weekends from Jan. 24 through Feb. 2.
The About Child Trauma (ACT) Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Mount Joy, offers traumainformed training to organizations and professionals with the goal of helping children to heal from the effects of early trauma. Executive director Lark Eshleman, MLS, MS, Ph.D., who specializes in the field of trauma and attachment, wants people to know that they can all have a hand in fostering resilience - the antidote to child trauma. “What we know is that relationships are key, and one caring adult can change a person’s life,” stated Eshleman. “That person doesn’t need to live with them but needs to be consistent and safe. To be that person for a child in need is a gift beyond measure.” See ACT pg 2
Lark Eshleman serves as executive director of the About Child Trauma Foundation and is one of several professionals in the organization who is available to present Pennsylvania Department of Educationapproved Act 48 trauma-informed courses that cover topics including emotional trauma, complex trauma, trauma and sensory processing disorder, and mindfulness.

others who are interested. In the fall of 2019, Eshleman led a trauma-informed training for the non-teaching staff at Donegal School District, and plans are underway for a series of interactive parenting workshops in February at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. “Behaviors are often not what they seem,” stated Eshleman, who has worked as a children’s librarian, school psychologist, and principal and has served overseas with children traumatized in the war in the Balkans. Eshleman explained that implementing a traumainformed approach as an educator or other person who works with children and youths involves asking questions about the root cause of an individual’s behavior. Depending on the answer, more questions must be asked to determine how the adult can best work with

According to Eshleman, a 1998 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) demonstrated how traumatic childhood events can be the root cause of many social, emotional, and cognitive impairments that contribute to an increase in high-risk health behaviors, chronic health conditions, emotional and behavioral dysfunction, and early death. Examples of ACEs are physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; and forms of household dysfunction such as divorce, mental illness, substance abuse, a parent being treated violently, and having an incarcerated relative. “The more adverse child-

hood experiences you have, the more in danger of certain physical, psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues (you are),” summarized Eshleman. In 2019, trauma-informed education became mandatory for staff at all Pennsylvania public schools with the passing of Senate Bill 144. The new legislation acknowledged that ACEs have a potentially long-term effect on a child’s functioning and well-being and implemented requisite training to help school board members, administrators, and faculty members to identify the signs and symptoms of trauma in students. Eshleman, who was named to the state’s Trauma Informed Practices in Schools Workgroup, and other professionals from the ACT Foundation lead workshops for educators, parents, representatives of professional agencies, and

E-town Swimmers Split With Lower Dauphin

E-town’s Riley Runnels posted a time of 55.49 to put the 100 Megan Handshew (left photo) won the 100 Backstroke in 1:07.71, and Lexi Fink captured the 100 Breaststroke in 1:11.90 to help the Freestyle into the Bears column during their 87-84 nonleague E-town girls to a 99-71, nonleague win over Lower Dauphin last Thursday at Elizabethtown College. loss to Lower Dauphin last Thursday in E-town. a 1:37.84 in the relay win while Ben the 113-pound bracket while Walters’ Ryan Findley were the final two Bears by Eric Pyles
turned in a 22.07 in the 50 free, besting teammates Sam Azzalina and Adam Mickievicz in the event sweep. Riley Runnels provided the only other E-town victory, taking the top spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.49. For the Lady Bears, Houck was pleased with the win but still saw some things his squad could improve on. “We equally made some mistakes, were missing an A swimmer due to illness, but had a little more room for error so that it didn’t cost us.” That additional room Houck mentioned led to six event victories, including one sweep, two one-two finishes, eight second place finishes and five third place finishes in the 9971 win. Lexi Fink picked up three of those victories but it was Rachel Handshew leading the way in the 50freestyle sweep with a time of 27.99. Megan Handshew and Genevieve McDonald locked up the sweep with both swimmers touching the wall at 28.58 for a rare tie. Rachel Handshew also helped Fink secure one of her victories with assistance from Sierra Kapcsos and Emily Kriner. Together the quartet claimed the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.53. Fink’s remaining two wins came in solo events starting with a 1:11.90 in the 100-breaststroke. A 1:05.97 in the 100-butterfly gave Fink a second solo win and was one of the two events where the Lady Bears finished onetwo. Kriner slotted into second with a time of 1:09.77. Kapcsos and Rachel Handshew accounted for the other one-two finish with Kapcsos winning the 100 freestyle in 58.86. Megan Handshew picked up the final Elizabethtown victory, clocking a 1:07.71 in the 100-backstroke. WRESTLING The Bear wrestling team has kept busy over the last week or so, taking part in the Governor Mifflin Holiday Tournament before taking on Lebanon and hosting the Grizzly Duals on January 4th. Two grapplers returned from Reading holding medals after Governor Mifflin’s two-day wrestling extravaganza on December 27th and 28th. Wyatt Mummau and Bobby Walters both picked up seventh place medals Photo by Cheri Sine E-town’s Elijah Eberly scores over Warwick’s Kai Cipalla for two of his team-high 22 points in the thanks to their final match ending in a forfeit. Mummau’s forfeit win came in Bears’ 76-54, Section Two loss to the visiting Warriors last Friday.
In the world of swimming, the term ‘split’ is most often used when discussing times for individuals in a relay race. However, it also covers the results in Elizabethtown’s January 2nd non-league showdown with Lower Dauphin where the boy’s dropped a narrow 86.5-83.5 final, while the girls coasted to a 99-71 victory. The results leave both sides at 3-2 overall as the Bears head into the meat of the L-L schedule. “The boys results were pretty disappointing,” said head coach Chad Houck. “We were down a few swimmers due to illness but that’s no excuse for the mental mistakes we made that will cost a team in a close meet such as that.” But he quickly turned his attention to the remainder of the season, “It was a disappointing way to end the non-league, non-section schedule for us, but it does allow us to reset ourselves mentally for the upcoming section slate.” Ben Azzalina was at the forefront of the near miss, leading the way in a 50-freestyle sweep while taking part Photo by Cheri Sine in the victorious 200 freestyle relay. E-town’s Alex O’Shea challenges the put-back by Warwick’s Kai Andrew Donahue, Wyatt Rachael and Cipalla during last Friday’s Section Two contest in E-town. Sam Azzalina joined Azzalina to clock

Elizabethtown’s next big invitational came at home on January 4th when the Bears welcomed Dover, West York, Palmyra, York Suburban and York Tech to Daubert Gymnasium for the Grizzly Duals. E-town went 2-3 on the day with wins over Palmyra (45-34) and York Tech (62-12) settling the Bears into fourth place. West York (48-27), York Suburban (58-21) and eventual champ Dover (51-27) handed Elizabethtown their losses. Walters and Cole Rice both enjoyed perfect 5-0 days with four of Rice’s wins coming via pinfall. Walters picked up three pinfall wins, adding a tech fall and forfeit win to his day. Jake Rudy and Nathan Thomas just missed giving Elizabethtown a quartet of perfect wrestlers with both finishing 4-1 after suffering losses against York Suburban. Mummau and

In between the two big invitational events the Bears traveled to Lebanon to take on the Cedars and came home with a 39-30 victory. Elizabethtown did the bulk of their damage over a six-match stretch that started with Cade Capello’s 10-0 major decision win over Trevor Gipel at 132. The win put E-town in front 15-12 and the Bears never looked back. Aiden Robinson followed with a pinfall win at 138 that pushed the lead to 21-12. Rudy’s 9-5 decision at 145 stretched the lead to 24-12 while Walters needed 73 seconds to make it 30-12 thanks to a pinfall win at 152. Kaidyn Heaps picked up the second See E-town pg 6

Masters led the scoring blitz, accruing 21 points along with seven assists, three steals and four rebounds. Stambaugh secured another 13 Charger points, Stewart chipped in 12, and Barnes was once again a long-range threat collecting another dozen points from beyond the arc. “I’ve been pleased by our fast pace of play and willingness to share the ball more on offense,” praised head coach Kory Pruner. Two days after Christmas, the Chargers traveled to Reading to take on the Antietam Mountaineers, and on that occasion, the team-wide Photo by Vaughn Brown effort was led by Stewart’s 18-point, Hunter Stewart goes baseline for the Chargers during their 10-rebound game and culminated in 74-49, CCAC victory over West Shore Academy last Friday at a 54-51 nonconference win. The contest was stalled at an even 43 apiece after three quarters, but the Chargers retook the court and outscored Antietam 11-8 in the final eight minutes to seal the win. December 10th in a home court pairing against the Crusaders, marking the Chargers first conference win of the season. It might have looked like anyone’s game after a 17-17 opening quarter between the CCAC opponents, but a few adjustments to the Charger’s game plan resulted in an extremely different story for the remaining three periods and a resounding 82-34 Charger win. “We challenged them to be more active, communicate and stand up to the physicality,” explained Pruner of his message during the break. The pep talk worked, and a few defensive changes created turnovers and subsequent Charger conversions, kick-starting a surge of momentum, giving the MC club a 43-22 upper hand at the half. “Partnering a better defensive effort with not turning the ball over, and taking quality shots allowed us to continue to increase our lead after halftime,” Pruner added. Only two teams have been able to hand the Chargers a loss so far this season, Delaware County Christian (67-59) on December 18th and Schuylkill Haven (72-60) on December 7th. Rolling their momentum into 2020, the Chargers face a three-game lineup of Dayspring Christian, Covenant Christian, and Millersburg High School promising plenty of excitement. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The MC Lady Chargers also added a pair of wins to their record last weekend, maintaining an unblemished conference record of 3-0, and bringing them to 8-2 overall. The night before the Chargers all but doubled the efforts of the West Shore Bobcats in the 44-25 victory, headed up by 19 points from senior
Kenzie Baughman. Baughman also led the team in assists (4), and picked up two steals and nine rebounds for contributions on both ends of the court. E-town from pg 4 to last win, topping Pedro DeArcell by an 11-8 final at 160 and Rice capped things off by pinning Wilson Santos just before the one-minute mark of their 170-pound tangle. Three straight Lebanon wins closed out the match and set the final at 39-30. Elizabethtown picked up their first two wins at 113 and 120 which gave the Bears a short-lived 11-6 lead early in the match. Mummau picked up the win at 113 while Thomas was responsible for the 120-pound victory. BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team saw their six-game winning streak snapped on January 3rd courtesy of a 76-54 loss to Warwick. The result leaves the Bears and Warriors knotted atop the Section Two standings with identical 3-2 records with both squads holding 7-4 overall marks as well. Warwick, behind Joe McCracken’s game high 23 points, controlled each frame starting with a 16-11 edge in the opening quarter. The Warriors stretched the lead to eight at intermission with a 17-14 run through the second quarter while keeping the Bears on their heels with a 21-18 edge in the third. Any thoughts Elizabethtown had of a fourth quarter comeback were squashed thanks to Warwick’s 22-11 closeout of the contest. Elijah Eberly finished one-point shy of equaling McCracken’s game high tally, settling for 22 points while Ryan Parise added 15 in the loss. The Lady Bears suffered the same fate in their battle with Warwick on
the 3rd but the Lady Warriors needed overtime to derail Elizabethtown 4439. E-town’s starters scored all but six of their 39 points with Jade LoveMorris and Carly Sedun netting eight apiece to help the Lady Bears build a 24-10 lead at the break. Warwick trimmed the E-town lead to 11 points at 33-22, heading into the final stanza where a 17-6 Lady Warrior run knotted things up and sent the game to an extra frame. The Lady Bear offense continued to struggle in the extra secession which allowed Warwick to escape with the five-point victory. Macy Seaman was the lone Lady Bear to score off the bench, finishing with six points, matching starters Alicia Underkoffler and Elise Hassinger. The fifth starter, Ainsley Raybold, finished with five points. BOWLING The bowling team continues to collect wins, taking out Lancaster Catholic by a 7-0 final on January 3rd to improve to 23-12. Zach Wentzel was one of two Bear keglers to bowl all three games, finishing with a match high 629 series. Daniel Eberle was the other Bear to partake in all three games, going 177, 157, 226 to finish with a 560 series. Logan Ginder, Alaina Telenko and Eryn Moore each rolled two games with Telenko and Moore taking part in Elizabethtown’s 937-672 and 845755 wins in the opening two matches. Ginder’s 192 and 200 came in the second and third matches and left the senior with a 392 tally for the day. Andrew Telenko (229), Gabe Berrier (226) and Ben Davis (159) rounded out the Elizabethtown line-up for the

day and helped the Bears secure the final team point with a 2848-2272 total pin count advantage. RIFLE The early portion of the 20192020 season was a bit bumpy for the E-town rifle team. A 495-491 loss to Manheim Central on January 3rd dropped the Bears to 1-3, roughly one-quarter of the way through the season. That is uncharted territory for the team under fifth year skipper Dave Reinfried, eclipsing the 2-2 mark from the ‘15-’16 and the ‘17’18 seasons that had served as the previous reference for a slow start. The Bears hope to shake off this slow start and regain the form that saw them go 32-9 over the past three years as they work their way through the remaining portion of the regular season. Cole Ginder led the way in the four-point loss to Central with a score of 99. Emily Bonsall, Emma Kreider, Rachel Broomell and Jagger Gilleland notched matching scores of 98 to complete Elizabethtown’s top five.
Calvary from pg 5 loss in a holiday tournament hosted by Lebanon Catholic. On December 19th, the club fended off an eager Veritas Academy team that burst ahead in the first to put the Chargers at a 17-6 disadvantage after the opening quarter. The tide quickly turned in second period, with the Chargers eventually pulling away to a resounding 60-31 win, holding Veritas to only 14 additional points in the remaining three quarters of the contest. “It’s nothing we changed in our game plan-we simply started executing our game plan better,” explained head coach Phil Ferrari regarding the turnaround. “Veritas simply wanted it more in that first quarter. During the quarter break, I challenged the girls to get their heads and their hearts into the game-from that point on we outscored them 53-15.” Baughman’s 17 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, and five assists went a long way in the
comeback performance, igniting a contagious Charger surge. Locker netted 16 points and Witmer chipped in with a dozen. MC earned their first conference victory in a 38-31 overtime triumph over Christian School of York on December 10th. Baughman once again topped all scorers with 15 points, including a six-of-nine showing at the line. Locker’s 12 points supplemented the attack and a pair of blocks at the other end of the floor churned additional Charger momentum. Just one day earlier, in a 53-28 victory over Fairfield High School, Locker displayed her long-range abilities, netting four baskets from beyond the arc. Locker led all scorers with 21 points, and Baughman once again dominated the free throw line, shooting 83 percent with a 10-for-12 performance. In the squad’s season opener, a 52-26 win over Harrisburg Academy, sophomore Ruth Hynum pulled down seven rebounds and blocked two shots to spur the Charger defensive
efforts. Baughman and Locker led the offense with 17 and 11 points, respectively, to seal the success. Over the holiday break, the team took some time to put their team theme “Stronger Together” into practice off the court as well. Studying the Bible passages of I Corinthians 12 and Ephesians 4, the squad is learning how their individual role contributes to the whole, just as the body of Christ contains many distinct parts serving each other to become stronger. Gathering for their annual scavenger hunt, the team combined community service and friendly competition and collected nearly 200 items for the local food bank. “As their coach, I couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and dedication,” described Ferrari. “I love leading this team and serving together with them.” Now sporting an 8-2 overall record, the club delves into the heart of their season, with three opponents lined up on this week’s schedule.

Columbia; Monny Smith, 19, of Mount Joy; Jaerrid Strawser, 16, of Columbia; and AJ Vega, 15, of New Holland. The ride will provide ample opportunity for each of the boys to apply Lifecycles’ motto: “Do hard things.” The riders will set out from Sunset Beach, Ore., in June and finish out in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Four adult riders will accompany the youths, and a support and gear (SAG) van driven by two adults will follow the group. Continental breakfasts, lunches prepared by the SAG volunteers, and dinners at restaurants will fuel the riders as they tackle approximately 150,000 feet of climbing - a total equivalent to more than five times the height of Mount Everest. So it is with good reason that when Monny was asked what he believes the most challenging part of the trip will be, he responded, “The hills. I’m not looking forward to the hills.” Training for the Trans Am ride will not only include lots of bicycling for the boys but weekly gym nights led by a personal
trainer to cover cross-training. Micah’s mom, Melinda Clark, said that she is grateful for the avenue that Lifecycles has already provided to reinforce positive character traits and for the opportunity this trip will give to the boys to enhance decision-making and risk assessment skills. Albert Vega, AJ’s father and the leader of the New Holland Lifecycles site, is looking forward to hearing his son’s stories. “We have a lot of great conversations after our rides just in the local area,” said Albert. “I’m excited for him to see the country from a different perspective.” Each participant has been tasked with raising $2,000 of the approximately $6,000 per person trip cost to cover food, lodging, and travel expenses. Any business or individual interested in making a tax-deductible donation toward the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride may contact DeRemer at 717-586-2511 or director@lifecyclesteam.org or visit www.lifecyclesteam.org.

Winter is in full swing in Pennsylvania, accompanied by freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service asks customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, porches, street approach, and mailboxes. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. To do their part to keep letter carriers safe and to help them continue to offer consistent delivery service, customers should heed the
following tips: All customers should keep their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. This includes the approach to and exit from the area, as well as sufficient space on both sides of curbside mailboxes. Customers receiving door delivery should ensure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers. Customers should keep in mind that painted porches and steps are particularly hazardous. While salting or rubber-backed mats help

make them less slippery, customers should still clear the snow before a letter carrier arrives with the mail. In hazardous situations when delivery is suspended, customers should contact local postal officials to discuss ways to eliminate the hazard. Residents and businesses with blue collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice as well. According to the U.S. Postal Service, slips, trips, and falls are the leading cause of accidents among letter carriers. In addition to endangering the safety of the carrier, injuries to a letter carrier - or any visitor to a home can result in costly liabilities to homeowners.

The new CASA volunteers are Greg Carey of Lititz, Anne Connor of Lancaster, Tristan Eshleman of Richland, Ann Foley of Lititz, Jill Frey of Lancaster, Susan Gilder of Marietta, Laurie Hartz of Elizabethtown, Steve Heisey of Lancaster, Kelsey Hill of Lancaster, Danny Lingenfelter of Landisville, Marvin London of Mount Joy, Joe Manning of Lititz, Jan Masland of Lancaster, Mary Lou Nelson of Lititz, Maryann Payne of Hershey, Norma Snader of Lititz, Fred Thomas of Ephrata, Suzanne Vucovich of Lititz, Jenni Woodworth of Elizabethtown, and Jennifer Young of Lititz. “Ruth” from pg 1 Jan. 25 and Feb. 1, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on Sundays, Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. All shows will be held in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Kristin Hurdleston and Delaney Bigley are double cast in the titular role, and Ruth’s mother-in-law, Naomi, is played by Samantha Ingram. The pair find themselves poor widows when Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, played by Richard Thomas, dies and her sons are killed. With only faith in God and each other, Naomi and Ruth set off on a journey that leads to a lesson about finding God’s plans when one’s own have failed. But “Ruth” is also a love story about the kinsman Boaz, played by Bryson Buffington, who rescues the women from their plight when he falls in love with the title character. Brianna Brady will serve as the narrator, an otherworldly being who will at one point interact with the characters. While Grayberg is excited about the production, being the first to stage the

orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also pointed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.” As a choreographer, Grayberg said that there will be several songs that will include ensemble celebratory dances. “There’s a (number where) they enter the Temple of Chemosh, a god of the Moabites, with live percussion and extravagant dancing,” she said. As she deals with the challenges of bringing a big show to a smaller stage, Grayberg wants audiences to focus on the message of the show. “I hope audiences see this as a story of redemption and faithfulness and see that God works things out for good,” she said. Grayberg also lauded the cast members, noting that the students feel honored and thankful to play the roles. “I hope (audience members) see the truthfulness of the actors,” she said. Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

show outside Sight and Sound comes with challenges. “It feels like we are workshopping a brand-new show,” she said, noting that the stage at the Good Shepherd Chapel is somewhat smaller than the one at Sight and Sound. “We have to make the show attainable, so the text and staging can be tricky as far as conveying the story, but I think it will feel more intimate,” said Grayberg. “Theater is a vehicle for us to feel emotions and learn things and discover things within ourselves,” noted Grayberg. To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story down and bringing out the human aspect,” she said. “Ruth was used by God to facilitate (His plan).” From a musical perspective, Grayberg noted there will be significant changes. “This is the first time a Sight and Sound show will be done with a live orchestra,” she said, noting that LBC’s Dr. Bruce Gerlach listened to a recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece
