Museum Offers E-Learning Classes BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ike many places, Winters Heritage House Museum had to adapt to changes this past year. When the pandemic forced the site to temporarily close its doors at 47 E. High St. in Elizabethtown, it also opened an opportunity. “With nobody coming into the museum, we wanted to have a way for our staff to keep contributing to our mission, and we came up with ideas that could all be done virtually,” said Nancy Landis, museum director. The museum launched a series of e-learning courses with topics including crafts, recipes and science lessons. “ We sat down as a staff and started brainstorming ideas of things we thought would be fun for people to do,” Landis noted. “These are all things people did to entertain themselves in the days before TV.” Topics are geared toward children

but can be adapted for adults as well, she said. “We have a lesson on scherenschnitte, which is German scissors cutting. You can download patterns and print them out,” she explained. “We have a unit on embroidery. Kids love this. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much kids love to sew.” Other crafts include a print-andfold Conestoga wagon and packhorse train. “Many people don’t realize how important packhorse trains were to early transportation,” Landis stated. “These lessons give people an opportunity to learn as they are being entertained.” Recipes in the e-learning series include everything from homemade ice cream to Irish shortbread. “We came up with recipes that kids can help with,” Landis said. “Kids were definitely in our minds when we were coming up with topics. Most of the recipes are very simple, and we tastetested everything.”

The pantry will be maintained by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement on campus. “The pantry is intended to be accessible to all students to eliminate barriers to access for students experiencing hunger and having difficulty buying food,” she explained. “It will operate in ways that maximize hospitality and

The pantry will be stocked through community food donations as well as monetary contributions. Recently, the college’s campus security department held its annual Food for Fines drive to

The Lancaster Conservancy recently announced that Lancaster County is now a certified National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Community Wildlife Habitat. This certification shows Lancaster’s commitment to be a healthier, greener, and more wildlife-friendly county by creating wildlife habitat throughout its communities while also educating and engaging residents. The Lancaster Conservancy’s Community Wildlife Habitat initiative is a volunteer led effort that works with local property owners and organizations to encourage planting native plants, trees, and gardens that reduce stormwater runoff while providing habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators. The NWF has certified more than 568 sites, including yards, schools, businesses, community gardens, parks, and places of worship. Each of these sites provides the four basic elements that all wildlife need to thrive food, water, cover, and places to raise young - while integrating sustainable gardening and landscaping practices.

Chillin’ after the holidays? Now that the rush and hectic pace of the holidays are over, a New Year brings a new you! If you struggled to hear your family’s conversations and Christmas caroling, it is time to take care of you. Call to schedule your hearing test today. Hot chocolate provided, you bring the marshmallows!

Linda Ferich, who spearheaded this initiative for the last three years, was recently notified that Lancaster County now has enough certified sites for the county to qualify as the first in the state of Pennsylvania with this designation. With a critical mass of certified gardens, the goal is to create corridors for wildlife to thrive. Ferich personally visited and advised well over 300 property owners over the past three years. Ferich, Allison Zechman, and Margie Hall also led Habitat Steward trainings where 40 community volunteers were taught to identify non-native and invasive plants, analyze gardens and sites, and implement other sustainable landscaping practices. In recent years, the group of volunteers also launched additional initiatives focused specifically on creating habitat for wildlife at schools and places of worship. Encouraging community members to create native habitat is also one of the primary goals of the Conservancy’s annual Lancaster Water Week slated to take place for its fourth year from Friday, June 4, through Saturday, June 12, 2021. Removing invasive plants, planting natives, and reimagining lawns are critical steps toward saving pollinators, cleaning the water, and enhancing livability in communities for the long term. Readers who would like to have a Community Wildlife Habitat Steward schedule a visit to assess their site may contact Ferich at lferich@ lancasterconservancy.org. Several schools in Elizabethtown Area School District helped local families in need this fall. Thirteen local families from the greater Elizabethtown area enjoyed Thanksgiving meals courtesy of Elizabethtown Area Middle School. As part of the school’s annual Feathers for Families program, the school raised money to provide holiday shopping gift cards for families that were facing difficult financial circumstances during the holiday season. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving break, the students, faculty, and staff of the school bought paper turkey feathers to construct paper turkeys throughout the school. This year’s feather sale, conducted in the midst of the global pandemic and temporary school closing, raised over $1,300. All

proceeds were used to purchase the gift cards. The Feathers for Families program has steadily grown since it was launched in 1995. In the first year, the school raised $750 to put together food baskets for eight families. This fall, Mill Road Elementary School’s students and staff continued their annual tradition of collecting food items for families in need in the community. With a schoolwide focus on giving and gratitude, students brought in nonperishable food items like canned gravy, canned corn and vegetables, instant potatoes, stuffing, instant macaroni and cheese, and canned soups. Students also donated personal care items like soap, shampoo, toilet paper, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. In total, eight families from the Elizabethtown community were scheduled to receive a Thanksgiving food box. The school planned to give any leftover food items to Community Cupboard of Eliza-

bethtown. The families also received a voucher for a free Thanksgiving takeout meal from the River House Bar and Grill compliments of a local church. Rheems Elementary School students and faculty teamed up to help six local families. Working together during the first two weeks of November, the members of the school community donated nonperishable food items as part of the school’s annual Thanksgiving food drive. As a result of their efforts, the families were scheduled to receive food baskets filled with traditional Thanksgiving foods like canned cranberry sauce, canned corn and vegetables, stovetop stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, and gravy. The families were also to receive a gift certificate for a free turkey, a Giant gift card, and an assortment of personal hygiene and household products like cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and tissues. PBA Subcommittee Wins Award The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Minority Attorney Conference Planning Subcommittee of the Minority Bar Committee received the 2020 Award for Outstanding Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion from the PBA Diversity Team. The award was presented during a virtual awards luncheon on Nov. 19. Established in 2010, the PBA Diversity Team works collaboratively with PBA leadership and staff as well as all other PBA-related groups and entities to promote and enhance existing diversity initiatives and to assist with creating new opportunities. The award recognizes a PBA entity for outstanding efforts, contributions, or service to promote diversity and inclusion in the association’s membership and for demonstrating commitment to and leadership in promoting full and equal participation in the legal profession.

The PBA Minority Attorney Conference Planning Subcommittee is being recognized for its outstanding efforts, contributions, and service in the furtherance of the PBA Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Plan demonstrated in organizing the committee’s 30th annual conference, “Communities Under Attack: Leadership Going Forward,” in October 2019. The subcommittee promoted and demonstrated diversity and inclusion in its choice of program topics, such as best practices regarding juror diversity issues and ethical issues faced by minority attorneys. Subcommittee members who were honored include Mike Sand, Jessie Smith, and Rhodia D. Thomas, co-chair, all of whom reside in Harrisburg, as well as Beverly H. Rampaul, a member of the Lancaster County public defender’s office in Lancaster. For more details, readers may visit www.pabar.org.

LOHF Approves Program Funds Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) approved funding to four Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs. These programs seek to improve the mental wellbeing of youths and children, especially those who may not otherwise get the support they need. Patients R Waiting received $25,000 to mobilize a network of minority clinicians to provide mental health services to the most at-risk people in the community to reduce disparities in mental health care and maternal morbidity. Independent mental health care providers will offer culturally competent services to black and Latinx women, fully funded support to doula trainees and free doula services to pregnant women of color. Samaritan Counseling Teen Hope program received $15,000. Teen Hope provides screening to identify teens at risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide in 16 Lancaster County school districts and

then facilitates referrals to mental health care. The grant will transition this process to a digital method for improved accessibility, which is especially relevant during the pandemic. Elizabethtown Community Outreach and Services - Youth Crisis Response Counseling received $11,000. During the school year, the counselor addresses safety concerns of the students, assists with access to community mental health services, and promotes hope and wellness. During summer break, this program will offer individual and group support grounded in skillbuilding, psychological education, and trauma-informed care with the student and family. COBYS received $15,895 for a telehealth basic skillbuilding training and EMDR telehealth training for Lancaster County mental health therapists. All Lancaster County behavioral health therapists are invited to the training, and the first 30 may enroll at no cost.

LOHF encourages applicants to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for young adults and children from birth to age 26. Additional funds will be available in the spring of 2021. To learn more, readers may visit https://lohf.org/grants/.

Manheim Township Rec. Introduces Homeschool Phys. Ed. BY ANN MEAD ASH

R067037

When Michael Kurland graduated from the University of Tennessee, he headed to Jacksonville, Fla., with an idea. “I realized there was a large homeschool contingency down there, said Kurland. “I started a homeschool PE (physical education) program. In 2003, Kurland began teaching a curriculum he designed, attracting 400 students the first year, and eventually doubling the size of the program. Later, Kurland took the concept to a more urban setting in Maryland, where hundreds of students took part, some driving up to an hour for a class. A year ago, Kurland came to the Lancaster area where he took the position of youth sports and activities manager with the Manheim Township Recreation Department. His background came to the attention of his supervisor Matt Stopa, and the result is a homeschool gym class for Lancaster County students. Classes for any homeschooled children in the county were slated to begin on Jan. 4 at the Overlook Activity Center, 301 Golf Drive, Lancaster. The first session will end on Thursday, Jan. 28. Consecutive sessions

In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic

to games they may not be familiar with, such as gaga ball, as well as international games. A segment is devoted to the activities that were once part of the Presidential Fitness Test, which include a mile run, a shuttle run, and the Vsit reach. To promote social growth, Kurland has designed the curriculum to include teamwork and building individual self-esteem. “Parents receive progress reports after each session, said Kurland, adding that the course makes it easy for students who are at middle and high school levels to show they have obtained all their physical education credits. Kurland, who holds a degree in sports management, will be the sole teacher during the first year. Because of COVID-

19 restrictions, classes will be limited to 10 students to provide for social distancing. In the future, class sizes may range up to 20 students. Other safety measures will include taking temperatures, wearing masks and gloves, handwashing, and sanitizing class areas between classes. There is a fee to take part in each session. If a homeschool co-op group wants to keep certain students together, Kurland is open to creating a class for that group. He also said the possibility of including students who are taking part in virtual schooling exists. Readers who would like to register children for the classes may visit www.manheim township.org/253/recreation -and-park-planning or call 717-290-7180.

Food And Shelter Funds Available The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently announced that an award of federal funds has been made available through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) national board for fiscal year 2020 (Phase 38) for the Lancaster County jurisdiction. Lancaster County has been chosen to receive federal EFSP funds in the amount of $251,200 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Lancaster County. The selection was made by the EFSP national board, which is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s FEMA, and consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic

Charities USA, the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the Salvation Army, the Jewish Federations of North America, and United Way Worldwide. A local board made up of local members of these organizations, local government, and various county organizations in Lancaster County will determine how the funds are to be distributed among Lancaster County emergency food and shelter programs. The local board is responsible for recommending Lancaster County agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program. For Lancaster County, the local board has determined

that the priorities for the allocation of these funds are rent assistance/eviction prevention, emergency shelter programs (not transitional living programs), and mass feeding/food security programs. The timeframe for eligible expenses for Phase 38 began on Jan. 1 and runs through Monday, May 31. Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local organizations chosen to receive funds must be a nonprofit or agency of government located in the Lancaster County jurisdiction; be eligible to receive federal funds; have an accounting system or fiscal agent approved by the local board; have a Federal Employer

Health Centers Approve Merger Lancaster County’s two federally qualified health centers (FQHC) are merging to provide accessible, affordable, and integrated primary care, dental care, behavioral health, and social services throughout Lancaster and Lebanon. The boards of Lancaster Health Center and Welsh Mountain Health Centers unanimously approved the merger on Oct. 29 after months of due diligence and discussion. Lancaster Health Center, founded in 1972, has 178 staff members, an $18 million operating budget, and five Lancaster locations. These locations provide services to a total of more than 21,000 patients.

Welsh Mountain Health Centers, founded in 1969, has 97 staff members, a $10.1 million operating budget, and five locations throughout Lancaster and Lebanon. These locations provide services to a total of more than 14,000 patients. Both organizations are recognized as patient-centered medical homes. A patient-centered medical home is defined by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a model of care that puts patients at the forefront of care, building better relationships between patients and their clinical care teams. Lancaster Health Center and Welsh Mountain Health

Centers are part of a larger movement of FQHCs, which are community-based, nonprofit organizations that provide comprehensive primary health care to patients in their community. FQHCs are created by individuals in a community coming together with a mission to improve access to primary medical care in an underserved area. Every Community Health Center is different, but they all care for patients in a community-oriented, culturally embracing setting, partnering with patients and their families to understand and respect each patient’s unique needs, culture, values, and preferences.
