The Elizabeth Hughes Society

The Elizabethtown Public Library and Elizabethtown Rotary Club are teaming up once again to present A Taste of Western Lancaster County, an annual celebration of food, music, and fellowship, on Feb. 7 at the library.

Restaurants, caterers, breweries, bakeries, wineries, chocolatiers, and other food and beverage vendors from throughout the region will be vying for prizes and bragging rights at A Taste of Western Lancaster County. The 12th annual celebration will take place from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Proceeds from the 21-and-older event will benefit the library and the service projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club. Throughout all three levels of the library, people may sample appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages from

local businesses serving the greater Elizabethtown area. Elizabethtown Public Library staff member Meghan Phillips, who is co-chairing the event with Rotarian Kevin Engle, explained that attendees will each receive tickets to vote for their favorites in various categories by placing a ticket in the container at the vendor of their choice. “We have a lot of favorites coming back this year,” noted Phillips. Winners at last year’s event included The Gathering Place for Best of Show and Best Appetizer, Fuego Latino for Best Entrée, Cox Brewing Company for Best Beverage, and Spence Candies for Best Dessert. “It’s a lot of fun because the returning vendors know what to expect now and are very competitive,” said library staff member Aimee Nelson, who has been on the planning committee for

young children. “Preschools typically begin sign-ups before spring of the same year for fall enrollment, so exploring at the start of the year is key,” stated Leilous. She noted that while many schools start when a child is age 3 or 4, some, such as Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, have programs for children as young as age 2, and infants and older children may attend Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County with their parent. “It is a great opportunity to explore all the schools at one time, in one location, versus researching all the options on your own,” said Leilous. “It is great to have the face-to-face interaction and to meet individuals that could possibly be working with your child.” Schools and organizations scheduled to take part in this year’s fair include Bossler Christian Preschool, Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, Discovery Kids, Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC), Elizabethtown Community Nursery School, Elizabethtown Kung Fu, Faith Factory, GEARS Kids Center, Kraybill Mennonite School, MOMS Club of Elizabethtown, Moms Out Morning (MOMS) at St. Paul’s UMC, Musik Time with Benjamin Dows, Parents as Teachers, Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary School, Susquehanna Waldorf School, and Tiny Timbers Christian Preschool. On Jan. 4, Gov. Tom Wolf and Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding kicked off the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show, inviting the show’s thousands of competitive exhibitors and nearly half a million visitors to embrace the 2020 theme, “Imagine the Opportunities.” Throughout the eight-day event, attendees had the chance to explore the breadth of Pennsylvania agriculture, its heritage, and the innovation driving its future. The ceremony began with a Pennsylvania State Police ceremonial color guard and the singing of the national anthem by the Greater Harrisburg Chorus’ Sweet Adelines, winners of the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show Oh Say, Can You Sing? contest. Serving as masters of ceremonies were Pennsylvania FFA president Timber Thebes of Perry County and Pennsylvania 4-H vice president of operations Kelsey Bish of Clarion and Venango counties. This year’s Pennsylvania Farm Show featured a variety of new exhibits, including a waterfowl habitat with real ducks and ducklings, mounted archery, a quilt trail, cider sales and beer tasting, and low stimulation centers for those with sensory challenges. Along with these additions, fan favorites returned, such as the Pennsylvania Dairy Princess competition, the PA Preferred Culinary Connection stage, the So You Wanna Be a Farmer exhibit, a chick hatch, wine and cider tasting, a

farmers market, and the Farm Show food court. Prior to the opening of the Farm Show, Redding and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman hosted a tasting event to preview new items on the menu at the food court. Also returning was the half-ton butter sculpture. This year’s sculpture depicted three of Pennsylvania’s professional sports mascots - the Philadelphia Flyers’ Gritty, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Swoop, and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Steely McBeam - celebrating with a spread of Pennsylvania dairy products. The sculpture, a long-time Farm Show staple, encourages Pennsylvanians to support Pennsylvania dairy. The Pennsylvania Farm Show, which ran from Jan. 4 to 11, is recognized as the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event. It features 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of which are part of animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors. For more information, readers may visit www.farmshow.pa.gov.

five years. Live music will be performed by local artists on two levels of the library, adding to the ambiance of the event, which is referred to by many as “an Elizabethtown reunion.” “It’s a really solid partnership between the library and the Rotary,” noted Phillips, adding that numerous people throughout the community pitch in to make the event a success. On the day of the event, members of the Elizabethtown Area High School football team volunteer their time by coming in to the library to remove extra furniture and rearrange things as needed - turning what could be a long, labor-intensive undertaking into a quick project. “They’re the unsung heroes, because they’re not here on the night of the event, but they really help to make it all possible,” Phillips remarked. Elizabethtown DeMolay members faithfully volunteer their time by running the coat check each year at A Taste of Western Lancaster County. “The biggest way to support the event is to come,” Phillips added. “We’ve sold out of tickets early for the past few years.” Tickets for A Taste of Western Lancaster County may be purchased at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located in the library; from a Rotarian; or by visiting http://tinyurl.com/twlc2020. Series To Spotlight Trauma-Informed Care The Lancaster School of Psychodrama and Experiential Psychotherapies will offer a four-part series on traumainformed care with experiential and creative arts methods. This quarterly series focuses on best practices for traumainformed care, particularly the safe application of experiential therapies, including psychodrama, sociometry, Family Constellations, art making, and meditation. “Creating Safety and Connection: The Basics of Trauma-Informed Care” will be offered on Friday, Jan. 31 (with a snow date of Friday, Feb. 7). “Creating Body Awareness: The Body Remembers What the Mind Forgets” will be presented on Friday, April 17. “Creating the Bigger Picture: Addressing and Healing Ancestral Trauma” will be offered on Friday, July 17, and “Creating Possibilities: Post-Traumatic Growth as a Reality” will be presented on Friday, Oct. 23. According to Karen Carnabucci, the

school’s founder and one of the instructors of the series, trauma-informed care is an approach that acknowledges the effects of trauma, recognizes the impact of trauma on behavior, and responds in a manner that is supportive, encouraging, and empowering. Participants will learn how trauma-informed care is different than trauma treatment; a strength-based action-oriented model, adapted for a high level of safety and containment on multiple levels; how to deal with the reluctant or resistant client; how trauma-informed care supports relapse prevention with addictions and eating disorders; how to safely incorporate experiential activities and creative arts therapies in traumainformed care; and self-care as a route to nourish the professional and provide deeper care of client or patient. The series is intended for mental health professionals, educators, physicians, nurses, health care administrators,

first responders, creative arts therapists, alternative health practitioners, midwives, youth leaders, school counselors, human resources specialists, addictions professionals, and others interested in trauma-informed care. The instructors will be Carnabucci and Sharon Czabafy, both of whom have experience with trauma care and treatment, substance abuse and addictions, and experiential and expressive therapies. Classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, offering up to 24 CE credits for social workers, marriage and family therapists, and licensed counselors, plus psychodrama hours. Psychology and Act 48 credits are pending. An early bird discount will be available until Monday, Jan. 20. The fee includes handouts and healthy snacks. An old school line of thinking says that the best way to get over something is to get back on the horse. The Elizabethtown girls’ basketball team didn’t need to actually get back on a horse, it is basketball after all, and thanks to Mother Nature they were forced to wait one additional day but the Lady Bears did shake off a surprise January 3rd overtime loss to Warwick with a victory over Conestoga Valley on the 8th. The 33-28 final was closer than expected after a Jade Love-Morris and Macy Seaman fueled first half sent the Lady Bears into intermission sporting a 21-11 lead. The Lady Buckskins, behind Laela Robinson’s team high 10 points, kept pace with Elizabethtown through the third and made things interesting with a 9-4 edge over the final eight minutes. The result was the closer than expected five-point victory for E-town. Love-Morris netted seven of her game high 13 in the opening frame to help the Lady Bears jump out to a 9-2 lead while Seaman picked up eight of her 12 points in the second allowing E-town to stretch their lead thanks to a 12-9 advantage. Two days later the Lady Bears welcomed Lebanon to Daubert Gymnasium, improving to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in league play with a 67-39 trouncing of the visiting Lady Cedars. With all five starters scoring in double figures, E-town outscored the visitors in each quarter to secure the 28-point victory. Love-Morris collected a game high 15

points while Seaman added 14. Elise Hassinger checked in with 13 points while Carly Sedun’s 12 points and 11 by Ainsley Raybold rounded out the starting five’s day. Alicia Underkoffler accounted for the final two points. BOWLING The bowling team found themselves on both sides of a 7-0 final last week starting with a victory over Ephrata on Monday. Ben Davis and Zach Wentzel powered the Bears to the shutout with a combined six games over 200. Davis posted the top two games, finishing his three-game run with scores of 269 and 266 for a 768 series. Wentzel started with a 207 and finished with a 240 and 235 to help the Bears to an overall pin count advantage of 3152-2690. Four other Bear bowlers took part in just two games, led by Daniel Eberle and his pair of 204’s. Alaina Telenko matched Eberle’s 204 in game one and followed with a 190. Eryn Moore and Andrew Telenko took part in game’s one and three. Moore opened with a 179 and Telenko a 171 while the pair added games of 182 and 188 to close out their match. Zach Deardorff finished things up for E-town with a 180 in game two. Elizabethtown’s 7-0 loss came on the 9th when they battled Cedar Crest. Nine different bowlers took part in the match with only Andrew Telenko seeing action in all three games. He posted a 223, 213 and 137 to finish with a 573 series. That left the Bears with another two-game quartet which was led by Aliana

Telenko and her 214-167 day. Moore (373) and Deardorff (371) finished within two pins of each other while Eberle rounded out the foursome with a two-game tally of 365. That left the Bears with a quartet of single game bowlers led by Wentzel and his opening game of 212. Josh Hammons added a 211 in game three with Gabe Berrier posting a game two score of 178. Davis finished with a 163. RIFLE What is the best way to deal with a multi-game losing streak?? Rip off a winning streak of equal length, which is exactly what the E-town rifle team did over the last week. The Bears fell to 1-3 on the season after consecutive losses to Manheim Township, Ephrata

and Manheim Central. But, wins over Governor Mifflin, Garden Spot and Wilson last week bumped their record to 4-3 overall. Elizabethtown opened the week on Monday, January 6 with a 493-486 win over Governor Mifflin. Arabella Albino collected the lone perfect score while Rachel Broomell just missed with her 99. Cole Ginder, Emma Kreiser and Emily Bonsall rounded out the top five with scores of 98. The Bears were back on the road two days later, returning from New Holland with a 496-494 victory over Garden Spot. Broomell, Bonsall and Ginder gave E-town a trio or perfect 100s while Kreiser just missed the club with her 99. Jagger Gilleland fin-

ished up the scorers with a 97. Elizabethtown’s busy week wrapped up on the 9th with a 496-488 win over Wilson. Broomell and Albino both picked up their second perfect score of the week while Kreiser posted a second straight near miss 99. Gilleland matched Kreiser’s 99 with Ginder tacking on a 98 to secure the win. SWIMMING The swimming teams made a splash on January 9th by sweeping Lancaster Catholic. The boy’s team enjoyed a 101-69 win while the girl’s side cruised to a 123-47 victory. The Lady Bears claimed all three relay events while posting top three sweeps in four different events. Gabby Walsh led two of those sweeps, turning in a 2:13.15 in the 200 freestyle and a 1:04.22 in the 100-backstroke.

Walsh picked up two additional wins by taking part in both the 200-medley relay and the 400-freestyle relay. Sierra Kapcsos, Emily Kriner and Megan Handshew teamed up with Walsh for a 2:02.68 in the medley relay while Gabi Dabbs, Brooke Heisey and Genevieve McDonald comprised the remainder of the 400 freestyle relay team (4:21.62). Heisey collected one solo win, leading a 500-freestyle sweep with a time of 5:54.70 with Kapcsos taking the 100-freestyle in 59.28. Lexi Fink captained the final E-town sweep, winning the 100-breaststroke with a time of 1:12.79. She also anchored the final winning relay with diver Kierstan Lentz swimming the lead leg of the 200-freestyle relay. Camille Donahue See E-town pg 6

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL For the girls’ team, last week held mixed results, ending on a homecourt loss to the Crimson Tide of Columbia, after a resounding win over the Covenant Christian Falcons the night before. After trailing Columbia 32-20 at the half on Friday night, the motivated Charger squad rallied for a comeback, bringing them within a point in the fourth quarter, 45-44, but came up just short of overtaking the Tide in the 49-44 loss. Donahue also picked up a solo win with a 2:29.26 in the 200-individual medley while Kriner picked up the final win with a 1:09.77 in the 100-butterfly. The boys enjoyed a comfortable win over the Crusaders but managed just four wins outside of the relay sweep. Ben Azzalina picked up two wins, taking the 50-freestyle in 22.14 and the 100-freestyle in 49.56. Sam Azzalina added a win in the 100breaststroke while Riley Runnels claimed the final solo win with a 1:04.46 in the 100-backstroke. Nathan Yohn joined the Azzalina, Azzalina and Runnels trio to open the meet by winning the 200-medley relay with a 1:48.22. Yohn, Runnels and Sam Azzalina then teamed with Wyatt Rachel to post a 1:38.33 to capture the 200-freestyle while Ethan Hall, Andrew Donahue and Donovan Arnold joined Ben Azzalina to close

out the meet with a winning 3:39.24 in the 400-freestyle relay. WRESTLING The Elizabethtown wrestling team hit the road twice last week, returning with a 46-32 loss to ELCO on January 6th and a 64-12 loss to Manheim Central on the 8th. The Bears picked up six wins against the Raiders on Monday, including a three-match run to kick things off. Aiden Robinson got things going with a 32-second pinfall over Dru Yoder at 145. Jake Rudy needed 4:51 before he was able to finish off Dan O’Neill at 152-pounds while Bobby Walters capped the threematch run by pinning Michael Torres just before the end of the second period of the 160-pound tussle. Cole Rice gave E-town a win in four of the first five matches by collecting a forfeit at 182 that made it 24-6 but the Raiders claimed the next four weight classes to take a 28-23 lead into the home stretch. The Bears regained control with back-to-back wins at 113 and 120 but

E-town’s Gabby Walsh, left photo, won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:04.22 and Sierra Kapcsos finished first in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.28 to help the Bears to a 123-47, Section Two victory over Lancaster Catholic last Thursday at Elizabethtown College.

ELCO secured the 46-32 win by taking the final three matches. Wyatt Mummau and Nathan Thomas were responsible for the final two wins with Mummau topping Landan Brubaker 32 at 113 while Thomas pinned Moses Chekanov just 51-seconds into the

120-pound bout. Two days later the Bears were unable to hang with Manheim Central. The first of two E-town wins came in the opening bout where Rice (182) pinned Ethan Stoltzfus at the 1:34 mark. That proved to be the high

point for Elizabethtown as the Barons captured the next 10 weight classes to turn that 6-0 lead into a 52-6 Manheim cushion. Walters (152) broke up the Baron run by pinning Rocco Dougherty in 77 seconds but Central closed out the match with two final wins for the 64-12 final. BOYS’ BASKETBALL What is the best way to respond after seeing your tidy six-game winning streak snapped?? Rip off three quick wins to kick start another winning streak. That is exactly what the boys’ basketball team did after a 76-54 loss to Warwick on January 3rd halted the Bears six game run. The new streak started on January 8th with an 80-60 demolition of Conestoga Valley. The Bears did their heavy lifting in the opening half where they built a 25-point, 46-21, cushion. That allowed the visitors to absorb CV’s 39-34 second half edge and still come away with a 20-point win. Luke Pierson, Elijah Eberly and Brody Beach spearheaded the first half push, each hitting double digits while accounting for 35 of Elizabethtown’s 46 points. Pierson tallied 14 of his game high 22 in the opening half

while Eberly picked up 11 of his 21 points. Beach added a 10-point first half on his way to 14 points. Ryan Parise finished out the double-digit club with a 12-point, 10-assist game. Elizabethtown made it two in a row with another lopsided final, this one a 63-46 victory over Section Two foe Lebanon on January 10th. Parise took center stage, posting a 21-point, five assist, four rebound game where all eight of his fourth quarter points came from the free throw line. Pierson added eight steals to his 15 points and Eberly tallied 13 points and seven rebounds before exiting in the third with an ankle injury. The Bears officially hit winning streak status on January 11th with a win over Middletown in the Mid-Penn Lancaster-Lebanon League Showcase. The teams flipped-flopped nine-point advantages in the middle two frames, leaving Elizabethtown with a 68-60 victory courtesy of their 18-11 first quarter edge coupled with a 21-20 fourth quarter advantage. Sophomore Patrick Gilhool erupted for a game high 23 points with Parise (19 points) and Pierson (12 points) joining him with double-digits to power the offense.

More than 60 designer purses donated by local individuals and businesses were up for bids in a silent auction while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres. Each purse was displayed with information about the “pursenality” who donated the bag.

Proceeds from the event will support the Go Red for Women campaign and the donation of Infant CPR Anytime kits and other resources to Lancaster County hospitals. The event served as a kick-off to the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women campaign, which will include the celebration of National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 7, and the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon on Thursday, April 30, at Rock Lititz Pod 2. Senior Center Sets Schedule

In October each year, people start calling the office at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, to ask about the annual clothing giveaway the church holds in January. “People are already checking in then to see if we’re doing it again,” shared Elayne Olson, who serves as the office and outreach coordinator at the church. Calls come in from people interested in donating and from people wanting to mark their calendars to attend. “It’s something people really look forward to,” Olson said. This year, the church will host its 12th annual clothing giveaway and community meal on Saturday, Jan. 25. All are welcome. Doors will open promptly at 9 a.m., and the giveaway will continue until 12:30 p.m. The fellowship committee will begin serving a free community meal at approximately 10:30 a.m., and the food will be available until noon or while supplies last. Takeout meals will also be an option. Anyone in need of clothing is invited to attend the giveaway. There are no qualifications to participate and no limit to the number of clothing items attendees may take home. Organizers simply ask that participants be respectful and considerate of others in attendance. Clothing in most sizes, from newborn through adult, will be available for attendees to choose from, as well as shoes, coats, and accessories. Volunteers wearing shirts that say “Live Generously” will be stationed throughout the church to offer direction and assistance. “Every year we wonder if we will have enough clothing to give away, but we always do,” remarked Olson. Donations of gently used clothing for people of all ages, as well as shoes and accessories, may be dropped off at the church between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, with additional drop-off hours between 6 and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Items should be packed in bags marked by gender and size and placed in the large storage POD in the church parking lot. The last day to drop off donations will be Sunday, Jan. 19. Olson noted that the clothing giveaway and community meal are a way not only to fulfill the call to serve and take care of others, but to put into practice the concept of reduce, reuse, and

recycle. Members of the congregation support the event by donating clothing and baked goods, sorting and organizing clothing in preparation, and volunteering on the day of the event. In past years, approximately 350 people have attended. “We all pull together to help our brothers and sisters in Christ,” Olson stated. For more information, readers may call 717-653-4168. Making A Difference Every Day In The Field of Senior Care The field of senior care offers employment opportunities for people with a variety of skills and talents. The senior care industry includes many different positions that are vital to ensuring that senior living communities provide the best possible care for residents as they age. Representatives from the industry note that working in the field of senior care can be a rewarding career choice for individuals with a passion for helping the senior population. “One of the many perks (of working in

senior care) is having the opportunity to be part of something bigger and having the opportunity each and every day to affect people’s lives in a positive way,” explained Kim Focht, director of human resources at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC), 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. “Our residents are our primary focus,” noted Kelly Miller, director of sales and marketing at Heatherwood Senior Living Community, 3180 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. “This is their home, and they

should be made to feel important and well cared for. Patience and understanding are key. Caring about how well our residents are treated is our main focus.” For Alicia Erdman, sales director for Legend Senior Living of Lititz, 80 W. Millport Road, something she enjoys about working in the senior care industry is the “satisfaction of knowing you were able to help a family and they no longer have to worry about their loved one’s overall safety.” Nurses are in high demand to fill various roles within senior care. Retirement communities offer positions for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Nursing Assessment Coordinators. A license is required to work

A certification is needed to serve as a CNA, but some senior care employers will help staff members obtain the certification. “We (at QPRC) do provide this education as well as pay our staff to get the education,” noted Focht. Personal care aides and medication technicians are also needed. A certification is required to serve as a med tech, with some employers providing and paying for the necessary training to staff members. “If you are serious, after 90 days (at Heatherwood), we will train and pay for the med tech certification, with the promise of a one-year employee commitment,” noted Miller. Other positions offered in the field of senior care include several roles within dining services for servers, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, dietary aides, and managers. Also needed are housekeepers, laundry aides and assistants, maintenance and renovations team members, activities aides, and receptionists. The field of senior care also includes home care professionals, who serve as caregivers, companions, and transportation providers to help seniors continue to live independently in their homes. Full-time, part-time, temporary, and PRN (as needed) employment opportunities are offered in the field of senior care. As facilities care for residents around the clock, employees are needed for all shifts. Nursing jobs offer a variety of options and flexibility, allowing for people craft a work

schedule that fits with their current season of life and family obligations. No matter which position they are interested in, one key attribute for senior care jobseekers to exhibit is dependability. “We’re looking for someone who is reliable and shares a passion for seniors,” explained Erdman. Other representatives from the senior care industry noted that displaying some longevity on a resume, without a lot of job hopping, is also a plus for those looking to get hired. Focht added that employers also look for individuals who have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in the industry is preferred, but not required. “Bring a positive, teamlike attitude, and we will train you,” noted Miller.
