Amazing Accomplishment - MS Patient Completes Ironman Rec Center To Offer MS Challenge Training BY ANN MEAD ASH
tephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks
S
later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. Realizing his life would change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown. Characterizing himself as “stubborn,” Stephen refused to accept the doctor’s predictions that he would be using a wheelchair in two years. Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge. Stephen connected with Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization. “I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019.
Stephen Glaus (left photo), an MS patient, earned his Ironman medal through a virtual event in the fall of 2020. Glaus swam at Blue Marsh in Reading (right photo), biked from Reading to Marietta, and then ran 26 miles on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.

Food insecurity is a concern for many college students, but Elizabethtown College is working to change that. The Blue Jay Pantry, established in late 2020, provides students with free, nonperishable food items obtained from community donations. “We established the Blue Jay Pantry in an effort to minimize the burdens that food insecurities can place on our students,” said Cecilia M. McCormick, Elizabethtown College president. “It’s estimated that one in five college students has inadequate access to food, and we

East Hempfield Township Police Department (PD) has participated in the Bleed Blue Challenge since the initiative’s inception. “We want to support Penn Medicine LG Health in its quest to get donations, especially in a pandemic year,” explained Lt. Jen Brubaker. “The blood stays local. It’s a way to give back to the community.” The Bleed Blue Challenge is a program of the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health) Blood Donor Center and is running from Jan. 4 to Friday, Jan. 29. During the initiative, participating police departments are encouraging members of their staffs and their communities to give blood at LG Health blood drives and at the center, 2104 Harrisburg Pike, Suite
New Choices Program Will Return YWCA Lancaster announced the return of New Choices, a program first launched 35 years ago as a collaborative effort between YWCA Lancaster, the Junior League of Lancaster, and Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. New Choices has aided individuals in transition and has helped thousands of Lancaster individuals to plan and achieve their career, educational, and personal goals. New Choices receives part of its funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and is overseen by Pennsylvania Women Work, which transforms women’s lives through empowerment, employment, and economic independence. Deb St. Onge, the current New Choices director, will continue her role as the director of YWCA Lancaster New Choices. YWCA Lancaster New Choices currently offers virtual courses twice a month, including a session from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and a session from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., completely free of charge for individuals in Lancaster, York, and Chester counties. Each course is a total of 10 hours over one week. To find out more about the program, readers may contact St. Onge at 717-869-6363 or dstonge@ywcalancaster.org.
Blood donor recruiter Anita Blizzard introduced the Bleed Blue Challenge with four PDs two years ago. It has grown to include 15 PDs this year: Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University, Lancaster City, Lititz Borough, West Hempfield, Northwest Regional, Mount Joy Borough, Pequea Township, Quarryville Borough, Strasburg Borough, and Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J. A total of 80 units were received during the challenge in 2020, with Millersville University PD receiving credit and a plaque for the most donors. LG Health aims to keep 200 units in stock at all times, Blizzard noted. “What they did last year was really good. With more police stations
you’d do even better (this year),” she said. Brubaker and other police officers planned to donate blood during the Bleed Blue Blood Drive on National Law Enforcement Day, Jan. 7. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make,” said LG Health director of laboratory operations Brian Stambaugh. To participate in the Bleed Blue Challenge, individuals may make an appointment by visiting http://lancastergeneral health.org/lgh/our-services /blood-bank/about-us/blood -drives.aspx or by calling 717544-0170, option 1. Donors must be age 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, have no history of hep-
tattoos or body piercings within the last three months. Individuals should be well hydrated and have eaten a substantial amount within four hours before donating. Those who have had COVID-19 may donate if it has been at least 28 days since diagnosis and they have no symptoms. Blizzard noted that COVID-19 is not spread through blood, but the donor center wants to reduce risk of infecting staff members and other donors. All potential donors will receive a thermal screening and be asked a series of questions. Everyone must wear a mask. Masks will be provided for those who do not have them. Readers who have questions or concerns may call the blood donor center at 717544-0170, option 2.

“It’s ironic, because we always joked toys are only a hobby. They can’t pay the bills,” remarked Clint. “In the course of 2020, the wedding and event industry came to an abrupt halt, but through an increased online presence and community support since the day we opened, the toy sales have enabled the store as well as Tony Gibble Photography to survive.” Tony and Clint have been avid toy collectors for years. “Toys are fun, and they represent happiness,” Tony said. “They take you back to a time in your life where things were simpler, and you had no concern over the adult issues of today.” As collectors, they noticed a lack of in-person stores for vintage and retro toys. “We wanted to create a shopping experience where collectors could go and feel like they were shopping in a retail store, with clean, like-new used
toys or even toys in their original packaging, and have an experience where the old could feel new,” Clint explained. With the success of their toy store, they decided to expand their offerings. “Most people would say that it is insane to open a new business in 2020,” Tony remarked, noting that the inspiration for their second store came from a desire to bring more joy to Elizabethtown. “We asked ourselves, ‘What could we do to bring more happiness to the community?’ What is happier than candy?” The Candy Unicornium opened after just 18 days of planning. With a carnival atmosphere and unicorn theme, the store offers retro candy, novelty candy, penny candy, bulk candy and more. The support they’ve received from the community has prompted Tony and Clint to

give back. They regularly hold Free Toy Fridays, when anyone can pick up a free toy, and they organized a Renew for Kids Toy Drive to benefit Toys for Tots. “People donate their vintage toys that we will try to sell, and 100% of the profit goes toward new, packaged toys bought at wholesale to be donated to Toys for Tots,” Tony explained, adding that the fundraiser runs all year.
Both Tony and Clint said operating their businesses has helped them do what they love most while making other people happy. “Expect the unexpected when you come through our doors,” Clint said. “You’ll see things you have forgotten about, but they will take you right back to Christmas morning. … There’s never an unhappy face in our store.”

Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a three-mile swim was no problem. Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced organizers to cancel. “MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his

The company’s weather mapping software is designed to ensure that providers never miss a snow day. Lawn Love broke into the on-demand services scene in 2014. ABC Keystone Goes Solar BY CATHY MOLITORIS
By focusing on its roof, the Associated Builders and Contractors Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) is working to go green. The chapter installed a rooftop solar array on its 31,000-square-foot training facility at 135 Shellyland Road, Manheim, in December. The solar panels will provide ABC Keystone with 60% to 65% of its electrical energy and represent a
trend for efficiency throughout the building, said G. David Sload, chapter president-CEO. “It is always our goal to be good stewards of our resources and energy consumption, and we strive to do our part for the environment,” he said. When the training facility was built in 2015, it was not initially costeffective to install solar panels, he noted, but advances in technology have now made it possible. At the time of con-
struction, builders planned ahead and constructed a roof with a slope and direction to maximize sun exposure as well as materials to bear the additional weight of the array. In addition to the solar array, the training facility features LED fixtures throughout the building as well as motion sensor-controlled room lights and large windows to allow shop and classroom spaces to be used without lights. The facility’s HVAC equipment was also
designed to be energy efficient. “We are confident that by now utilizing solar energy as well, we are keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum,” Sload said. The training facility hosts students in apprenticeship programs across nine trades in the construction industry. The solar panels are not only allowing the facility to be greener but are also providing a unique learning experience for students, Sload noted. See Solar pg 11

Plans for the annual Rose and Shamrock Celtic Festival and Feis, slated to occur in February, have been suspended due to the uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Each year, the festival brings thousands of dancers, musicians, and fans of Celtic culture to downtown Lancaster. It is possible that the dance and music competitions can still take place in an altered form to reduce crowding and prioritize everyone’s health and safety. All other elements of the festival, including bands, vendors, cultural presentations, and food, have been canceled for this year.

The .918 Club will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. There is plenty of free parking. The .918 Club seeks to keep the craft of letterpress printing alive in Lancaster County through presenting demonstrations at the Heritage Press Museum to illustrate the history of printing and through providing a working letterpress job shop. During meetings, volunteers of the Heritage Press Museum share ideas and suggestions concerning the educational demonstrations and sign up to operate the print shop. Meetings also provide a place for people to learn about letter-
press printing or develop the skills to become volunteers in the print shop. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the Jan. 27 gathering will be devoted to a business meeting. A presentation or video on some aspect of printing history will be presented, time permitting. The meeting will conclude with a show and tell, and attendees are invited to bring something they printed or discovered that was printed by letterpress. Additionally, the club is seeking support through payment of dues and donations to the club. Because outside groups are currently not permitted to use the campus facilities at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, the .918 Club is receiving all its income from

DONNA DELP Donna Delp, 57, of Manheim, PA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday evening, January 3, 2021 after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease six years ago. She passed at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lancaster and raised in the Centerville area, she was the daughter of the late Landis A. and Ruth H. Gochnauer Denlinger. She was the wife of Michael L. Delp for 37 years on September 10. Donna was a faithful member of East Petersburg Mennonite Church. She was a 1981 graduate of Hempfield High School. Although Donna was employed for a number of years by S. Clyde Weaver in East Petersburg, her greater ambition was creating a home and caring for her husband and family. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and trips to the beach and the family cabins. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Benjamin M., husband of Chelsea L. Fasnacht Delp, of Manheim, Jonathan M., husband of Abigail R. Schlicher Delp, of Elizabethtown, and Sara D., wife of Anthony N. Ferrari, of Manheim; nine grandchildren; five siblings, Clarence, husband of Cynthia Denlinger, of Millersburg, OH, Clair, husband of Barb Denlinger, of Strasburg, Shirley Byers of Shippensburg, George, husband of Dawn Denlinger, of Ephrata, and Gerry Denlinger of Farmland, IN; and her mother-in-law, Joyce Delp of Lititz. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Henry Delp. The family will receive guests on Friday evening, January 15, 2021 from 6-8:00 PM at East Petersburg Mennonite Church, 6279 Main Street, East Petersburg, PA. Masks are recommended. There will be no public viewing. The funeral and graveside service will be private.
