Friends In Action Gears Up For 2020 Trips “Tim, I know today is a workday for the project, but can I go to the Bible teaching this morning instead?” When Friends In Action (FIA) executive director Tim Johnston was approached with this question by a Rama Cay villager named Pete it was a moment to rejoice. Headquartered in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical service to spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before.
FIA has been at work among the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua since 2004, when village leaders invited volunteers to help with community rebuilding efforts. The greatest concentration of Rama is a group of 1,400 people who reside on a poverty-stricken island almost forgotten by the mainland. The World Health Organization reports that malnutrition is increasing each year for Rama children. They face widespread malnutrition, inadequate water and sewage systems, and sporadic public health measures. One of the Rama Cay Villagers whose life has been touched by FIA is Pete. Pete used to live in a 10-by-10foot thatched-roof hut with his common-law wife, four children, and
many extended family members. His days alternated between binge drinking and trying to fish and subsistence farm his small plot of depleted soil. When FIA workers invited Pete to learn trade skills, he jumped at the opportunity. For the past eight years, Pete has worked alongside FIA’s volunteer teams to dig wells, install boat docks, construct a pedestrian bridge, and clear land for a community playground and laundry/shower house. The masonry, carpentry, and construction skills Pete learned eventually enabled him to make his own clay bricks and build a new house for his family to move to the mainland. Pete also began attending ongoing Bible classes led by FIA volunteers. See Friends In Action pg 7
Nicaragua resident Pete (pictured) experienced a major life transformation when Friends In Action (FIA) volunteers invited him to learn trade skills. Volunteers are welcome to sign up to participate in FIA trips in 2020 to places including Nicaragua and Vanuatu.

As Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania founder Lisa Palmquist welcomed everyone in attendance at the club’s luncheon for caregivers on Jan. 11, she shared that the event was “a bit of a dream come true” for her. Palmquist worked as an instructional support teacher in the Hempfield School District for 26 years and spent many summers serving as a camp nurse at Aaron’s Acres, which offers summer camps for children and young adults with special needs. These experiences and others helped Palmquist to develop a deep sense of See Caregivers pg 2

Eagle Project To Benefit Local Children Local Scout Evan Ott has been in Scouting since first grade, when he started as a Tiger in Cub Scouts. After nine years in Scouting, he is working to achieve the rank of Eagle with Troop 51 in Elizabethtown. As part of this pursuit, he is planning
an Eagle Project, which is his final requirement to earn the rank. As part of this effort, he must plan out a project, recruit volunteers, acquire materials, and act as the foreman of the project. For his Eagle Project, Evan plans to create 10 bunk beds - a total of 20 beds - for children in the central Pennsylvania area through the nonprofit organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace. Evan noted that in this area, there is a waiting list of 100 families that have requested beds. Evan plans to have his project completed by the end of April. The estimated cost is $3,500, or $350 for each bunk bed, and Evan is seeking donations to support the project. Local businesses and community members wishing to donate may visit www.gofundme.com/f/6bphc2-eagle -scout-project.

“To be in their shoes 24/7 - it is just amazing what they do,” remarked Palmquist. “They need to remember to take care of themselves first, and that’s the message that I wanted to get across (at the luncheon): You need to take care of yourself.” Palmquist and other Pilot Club members recognize that is much easier said than done - hence, the luncheon: a designated time for caregivers to take a break and be cared for and to hopefully be reminded that they are not alone or overlooked. “Our purpose is just to give some of these caregivers a chance to get out, sit down, breathe, and have a quiet lunch and talk to other people who may be going through similar things,” summarized Pilot Club member Gail Monteleone. Approximately 40 caregivers from throughout Lancaster County attended the lunch at Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim, the majority of
guardians of children with special needs and abilities. Pilot Club members served lunch and dessert and gave goodie bags prepared for each person in attendance as a small memento to thank them for what they do. New York resident and mother of three Faith Clarke spoke to the group on “Radical Self-Care.” Clarke is the author of “Parenting Like a Ninja: An Autism Mom’s Guide to Professional Productivity” and a national speaker on the need for self-care for parents of special needs children. As Clarke shared her own journey with those gathered, she also invited them to answer the question: “What do you crave?” After hearing responses like alone time, forgiveness, and understanding, Clarke presented another interactive statement: “Even though I have experienced (fill in the blank), I have learned (fill in the blank).” “Even though you are craving these

Both of the Elizabethtown swimming teams absorbed blows to their respective section title aspirations last week. For the boy’s, it was a 100-70 loss to Ephrata on January 16th that dropped the Bears behind the Mountaineers and Cocalico in the title hunt. The hit for the Lady Bears came on January 14th with a 102-68 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg and when coupled with the 88-82 win over Ephrata two days later put the Lady Bears in a second-place tie with Ephrata. “I was really happy to come away with a win on the girl’s side,” said head coach Chad Houck after handing Ephrata their first section loss in four years. “It came down to winning the close races and having our heads in the meet from the start. Nothing comes easy against disciplined, wellcoached teams like Ephrata, so I was glad the girls could win that one at home.” Lexi Fink led the way with two individual wins and took part in the 200-medley relay win. She claimed the 100-breaststroke (1:14.61) and the 200IM (2:24.49) while helping the relay team post a winning time of 1:58.26. Gabi Walsh, Emmy Kriner and Sierra Kapcsos joined Fink in that relay win with Walsh also taking the 100 back (1:02.29) and Kriner claiming the 100 fly (1:09.18). Walsh was the lone Lady Bear to pickup a win against L-S, taking the 200-freestyle in 2:14.76. The boy’s team turned the Ephrata
meet into a first-place elimination meet with a 125-39 demolition of Lampeter-Strasburg on the 14th where the Bears won every single event. That included an impressive sweep in the 200-medley relay fronted Riley Runnels, Sam Azzalina, Ben Azzalina and Nathan Yohn. Ben and Sam Azzalina, coupled with Yohn and Adam Mickievicz picked up a second relay win in the 200-freestyle relay. Etown’s third relay win came in the 400 free with Sam Azzalina, Runnels, Donovan Arnold and Andrew Donahue (3:52.37). Arnold was the lone Bear to capture more than one individual win, taking the 200 (2:05.13) and the 500-freestyle (5:46.74). Mitch Garber led a sweep in the 100-butterfly with a 1:10. Sam Azzalina added a win in the 50-free and Ben Azzalina was tops in the 100 free. Runnels added a 100-backstroke win to his relay success while Wyatt Rachel picked up the 100-breastroke (1:10.46). Donahue added a win in the 200 IM. “Ephrata was just too tough of a challenge,” said Houck of the loss to Ephrata. “I was happy with the swims we did have and the relay points we did get.” Those points included Ben Azzalina going 21.94 to win the 50freestyle and 56.16 in the 100-backstroke, coupled with Runnels, Sam Azzalina and Yohn to help take the 200-medley relay (1:47.72). WRESTLING The outcome of most regular season wrestling matches is boiled down,
simply, to who won or who lost but when the two schools involved are neighbors, the stakes typically are a bit higher. Such was the case for Elizabethtown’s January 15th clash with Donegal where the Bears were not only looking to upend a Section Two foe, they were looking to avoid a three-game slide to the school that resides to the east. Those plans did not come to fruition as Donegal claimed nine of the 12 bouts, including three by forfeit, on their way to a 49-18 victory. The Indians picked up seven of those nine wins right out of the gate starting with back-to-back forfeits by Etown at 182 and 195. A 25-second pinfall loss at 220 was followed by the final Bear forfeit, giving Donegal a quick 24-0 lead. Back-to-back uncontested matches at 106 and 113 led into three more Indian wins, all coming with bonus points. That pushed Donegal’s lead to 40-0 with five weight classes remaining. E-town broke up the Donegal run and got on the board at 138 where Aiden Robinson posted a pinfall over Jeremy Algoe. Jake Rudy (145) followed with a pin, taking down Andrew Small at 3:23. Bobby Walters gave Elizabethtown a three match run when he pinned Josh Myers (152) in just 76 seconds, making it 40-18.
Donegal closed out the match with two final wins. BOWLING With the end of the bowling season just a few weeks away, it is safe to say that the schedule falls where some weeks are just more important than others. Last week was one of those weeks for the E-town bowling team with head-to-head match-ups opposite the teams directly above and below them in the Section Two standings. Nearly all the bowling broke the Bears way leading to victories over Warwick and Ephrata that stretched Elizabethtown’s lead over the third place Mountaineers while also shrinking the distance to first place Warwick. The Bears opened the week on the 13th by posting a 5-2 win over Warwick. Four of E-town’s five scorers went over 200 in the opening game leading to a 1134-1087 win. Ben Davis was tops with a 256 with Eryn Moore (236) and Zach Wentzel (231) close behind. Andrew Telenko finished out the quartet with a 218 while Alaina Telenko checked in with a 193. Elizabethtown collected another win in game two, 1143-930, thanks to all five bowlers breaking the 200-pin barrier. Once again it was Davis leading the way with a 258 while Daniel Eberle stepped into the starting

line-up to roll a 240. Andrew Telenko (221), Moore (214) and Wentzel (210) rounded out the starters for the second game. The Warriors claimed the third game as only two Bears cracked the 200-pin threshold starting with Eberle’s 229. Andrew Telenko added a 222 with Wentzel at 190. Moore (160) and Davis (159) finished the starting five in the 990-960 loss. Despite the setback, the Bears managed to claim the overall pin count 3237-3007 to secure the 5-2 win. Two days later E-town found the going much easier against Ephrata, as the Bears enjoyed their seventh 7-0 sweep of the season. Eight different keglers took part in the win with seven of them getting two games of action. Davis was the lone single game bowler, posting a 225 in game three to help secure a 1028-880 win. Alaina Telenko (202), Moore (210), Josh Hammons (199) and Andrew Telenko (192) joined Davis in game three. Elizabethtown’s opening lineup saw Andrew Telenko (220), Wentzel (211), Eberle (201), Zach Deardorff (200) and Moore (171) pickup the first two team points with a 1003-849 win. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL A busy week for the E-town girls’ basketball team did not produce the desired results for the Lady Bears. Elizabethtown went 1-2 last week, dropping to 10-5 overall and 4-4 in L-L play. That dropped Elizabethtown into third place in the Section Two standings and into seventh in the District 3-5A rankings. The highlight of the week came on Thursday with a 46-28 victory over Milton Hershey. Ainsley Raybold’s game high 17 points topped the seven Lady Bears that scored and helped E-town outscore the Lady Spartans in each quarter. That started with a 17-11 run out of the gate and continued with a 10-7 edge in the second frame. Elizabethtown posted a three-point edge in the third quarter to take a 33-21 cushion into the final frame. Another six-point advantage secured the win. The Lady Bears opened the week on the 13th by hosting Cedar Cliff. The Lady Colts outscored Elizabethtown in each of the first three quarters en route to a 43-27 victory. Raybold was the team’s leading scorer with nine points. E-town returned to L-L play on Friday with a trip to Ephrata that resulted in a 56-45 loss. The Mountaineers outscored See Etown pg 6

Chip Stambaugh and Regan Mummau had the most, each securing six. Brett Taylor and Damian Rutt topped the assist category, with three apiece. Last Tuesday the team topped York Country Day with a comfortable 56-36 final score, after a 20-4 Charger run in the opening period which set the tone for the contest. The highest four scorers shared the offensive load with similar contributions; Masters put in 12, Hunter Stewart and Stambaugh each had 10, and Barnes added nine. Jack Hilsher led the team in assists, with four, and Masters provided the same number of steals to spur the defense. Monday, January 13, the Chargers trounced Harrisburg Christian in a 71-21 victory on the road. Thirteen different Mount Calvary athletes added points to the scoreboard, led by a game-high 21 from Masters. Stewart had a perfect night at the line, going five-of-five. “I think the most important thing was that we were able to get off to a fast start and take command of the game early,” noted head coach Kory Pruner. themes, Coach Pruner has been emphasizing to his team the importance of character building that extends beyond the basketball court. “We are focused on playing with a new perspective and new purpose,” explained Pruner. “We are taking ideas from John 1 and 2 and have started looking at playing with new life.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Last week held a bit of everything for the Lady Chargers, with the week coming to a close after a win, a loss, and a weather postponement. Friday night, after five consecutive
CCAC wins, the Chargers faced their first conference loss of the season, falling 32-30, on a trip to Christian School of York. The MC girls found themselves trailing the Crusaders 19-13 at the break. Rallying for a stronger second half, the Chargers outscored CSY 17-13, but came up just one possession short of a full comeback. Kenzie Baughman stole the show in last Monday’s 44-38 triumph over
Harrisburg Christian, racking up a season high 26 points, which included five three-point buckets and five-of-eight free throws. The Lady Chargers were up 27-18 at intermission, but the Knights rallied for a comeback in the third, going on a 12-0 run and briefly taking the lead, 30-27. E-town from pg 4 Elizabethtown 35-22 in the first and third quarters. The Lady Bears managed to gain the upper hand through the middle section of the game, outscoring Ephrata 23-21 but it was not enough to overcome the opening and closing struggles. Raybold’s 10 points just missed team high honors thanks to 11 points from Jade Love-Morris. RIFLE The rifle team continued their impressive turnaround with wins over Conestoga Valley and Manheim Township last week. The pair of two-shot victories makes it five in a row for the Bears after starting the season 1-3. “We are recovering nicely and shooting to our potential, or at least
close to it,” said head coach Dave Reinfreid. The first of those wins came on January 14th with Elizabethtown edging Conestoga Valley 493-491. Emma Kreiser posted the lone 100 of the match to lead E-town while Rachel Broomell followed closely with her 99. Arabella Albino, Kyle Lloyd and Cole Ginder rounded out the scoring five with a trio of 98s. January 16th saw the Bears avenge their loss to Manheim Township by posting a 497-495 win. Albino netted one of two perfect scores for E-town but it was teammate Mick Nicodemus stealing the spot light. The first-year junior registered his first career 100 to help secure the win. Broomell, Kreiser and Tyler Chapman wrapped up the scoring with 99’s.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL The boys’ basketball team split a pair of games last week, falling to Milton Hershey while knocking off Ephrata. The result is a 6-2 L-L mark and an 11-5 overall record. The Bears opened the week with an 81-70 loss to Milton Hershey after leading for most of the first half. In fact, the Spartans took their first lead just before intermission with a put back making it 33-32. Milton Hershey then outscored E-town in both the third and fourth
quarters to secure the win. “Give them credit,” said head coach Rocky Parise, “they made some adjustments at halftime and started hitting some shots they weren’t hitting in the first half and then we just couldn’t get over the hump from there.” Patrick Gilhool posted a team high 18 points while Elijah Eberly overcame early foul trouble to finish with 15 points and six rebounds. Alex O’Shea (13 points) and Ryan Parise (12 points, eight assists) gave the Bears four double digit scores.
Elizabethtown bounced back on Friday the 17th with a 64-50 victory over Ephrata. “That wasn’t the best game but give Ephrata credit, they hit some tough shots. We just need to keep getting better defensively if we want to have the success we want here at the end of the season,” Parise said. The reason for Parise’s measured happiness was a 16-13 Mountaineer edge in the final frame that prevented E-town from outscoring the visitors in
all four quarters. Thankfully the Bears had built a 51-34 cushion over the opening three frames that withstood the small Ephrata charge. Brody Beach collected a team high 14 points to lead another quartet of double-digit scorers. Ryan Parise matched Beach while adding seven assists, helping to maintain his hold on Pennsylvania’s top spot in assists per game, according to MaxPreps. Luke Pierson rounded out that quartet with a 12-point game.
Chargers from pg 5
A 17-point fourth quarter scoring blitz for the Chargers put them back in front, as well as defensive contributions from Haley Witmer who pulled down seven rebounds and grabbed four steals. Nine of those fourth quarter points came from the free throw line, a team-wide effort in which the Lady Chargers got to the line for
17 attempts. The squad also improved their protection of the ball, only allowing one turnover in the final eight minutes of play. Moving forward, Coach Ferrari has several areas he hopes to grow the team as they head down the home stretch of the season. “Our turnovers have been too high,” explained Ferrari. “We’re still winning the turnover battle because we’re forcing a lot, but we need to clean up our play on offense.” Physicality is another area the team is honing in on, hoping to
improve their second chances with additional offensive boards and neutralizing opponents on the defensive side. “We want to continue focusing on crashing hard on every shot,” elaborated Ferrari. “We need to continue getting better at slowing down opposing post players.” With those goals in mind, the squad faces an upcoming week with three opponents lined up to test their skills in the form of Dayspring Christian, Harrisburg Christian, and Lancaster Country Day.
Charger squad in the quarter, areas that needed to be addressed for a successful outcome. “We played really well in three of the four quarters,” summarized head coach Phil Ferrari. “We battled back after a rough third quarter to hold on for another league win.”

All artwork is original in design and concept and created by the participating artist; mass-produced and imported items are not permitted. Schell came up with the idea for a Festival of the Arts in Mount Joy after receiving a tremendous response from artists interested in displaying work in the MSMJ large display window when

that opportunity was made available. The art display was also wildly popular among residents and visitors who expressed appreciation for the rotating monthly display. The inaugural event in 2019 drew approximately 400 people - a number Schell hopes to see doubled this time. Artist participation is already up from 16 in 2019 to 30 total artists for 2020. “Based on last year, the artists really enjoyed the event and the opportunity to get their names and art out in the public,” remarked Schell. “There is no cost for this event from the artist’s end or the guests’.” Lanco Federal Credit Union is the major event sponsor for the Festival of the Arts, and First Citizens Community Bank is an additional event sponsor. COMMUNITY MEAL & CLOTHING GIVE-AWAY
On Monday, Feb. 3, the community is invited to experience A Taste of Manheim Christian Day School (MCDS) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, which is located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. Food, live entertainment, and a scavenger hunt will be among the family-friendly activities planned, and people will have an opportunity to tour the school and meet faculty and staff members. The evening will kick off with a free taco dinner being served from 6 to 7:30 p.m. or while supplies last, followed by an ice cream social starting at 7:30 p.m. Clown and juggler duo Cissy and the Man, of WJTL Kids Cookie Break Fest fame, will be at the school to greet and interact with children. MCDS guitar students will play acoustic music. Children may participate in a scavenger hunt - with variations geared toward different age groups - to receive a prize. All guests will be eligible to enter a drawing to win four free tickets to “Queen Esther” at Sight & Sound Theatres in Ronks. Those tickets will be valid for a performance between March 14 and Dec. 31. MCDS principal Jennifer Knecht, who has been serving at the school for nine years, said that MCDS wanted to offer
something new in lieu of their traditional winter open house. “We want to have a community event so that people can come in and see our school, and they can meet our teachers and see some of the things that we do - in a fun environment,” shared Knecht. “We’re really excited about it.” Teachers will lead art, physical fitness, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities for children throughout the scavenger hunt. “It’s free to the community,” emphasized Knecht. “It’s also important to us that people will realize that we are more than just the Manheim community. We love the fact that we are embedded here in Manheim, but we serve students from all over.” MCDS began in 1952 and offers a Christian education for children from prekindergarten age through eighth grade. In addition to Manheim, Knecht noted that students attend from Elizabethtown, Landisville, Lebanon, Lititz, Mount Joy, and beyond. Currently, approximately 200 students are enrolled at the school, which has 30 faculty and staff members. “We truly do believe that this is a family atmosphere,” Knecht shared. “We love these children like their parents
love them.” “We do a great job of connecting with families, and we walk what we talk. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that their children’s needs are met,” continued Knecht. “We are a lot more than just academics. Our foundation is Christianity and without the promise of eternity, it doesn’t matter how good your academics are.” Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year at MCDS opens in February. People may ask questions and learn more about registration and tuition at A Taste of MCDS. For more information on the event or the school itself, people may call 717-6654300 or visit www.manheimchristian.org.

A First Friday reception for “From Scribbles to More Refined Scribbles - A Journey of a Literal Lifetime,” an art exhibit featuring the work of Lancaster native Jenni Buffington, will be held at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will include time to meet the artist, live music and food. During a stay at her mother’s house after an illness, the artist discovered that her mother had held on to every piece of art-
work Buffington had ever created, which developed into the idea to hold a concept show. The upcoming exhibit will showcase Buffington’s progression as an artist. The reception will feature live music by Stephen Diehl, another Lancaster native, who will perform original acoustic melodies.
