Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in 2020, and the yearlong celebration opened with volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe making thousands of comforters during The Great Winter Warm-Up events in January. The comforters are donated to people in crisis all over the world. In Lancaster County, volunteers gathered to knot comforters at sites

including Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim, Garden Spot Village in New Holland, Lancaster Mennonite School - New Danville Campus, Mountville Mennonite Church, and the MCC East Coast Materials Resource Center in Ephrata. MCC was founded in 1920 by Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren groups that formed a committee to provide food and other aid to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia, which is present-day Ukraine. See MCC pg 3

Erisman Mennonite Church in Manheim served as one of several Lancaster County host sites for The Great Winter Warm-Up, where volunteers throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe worked to make and knot thousands of comforters to donate to people in crisis around the world through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The Great Winter Warm-Up was the first of several events planned to celebrate MCC’s 100th anniversary in 2020.

Manheim, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. People of all ages and sewing ability levels - even novices wanting to learn - are welcome to attend. Anyone with interest or questions may call Janet at 717-926-4008. “It’s very ecumenical,” said Janet, noting that participants in the group represent a wide variety of churches throughout the area. During The Great Winter Warm-Up, Janet’s husband, Charles Patton, played hymns and other music on the piano which filled the church sanctuary as people of all ages worked away, enjoying quiet conversation and fellowship and breaking at mealtimes for chicken corn soup and light refreshments. Diane Buckley-Maidt traveled from Ellicott City, Md., to participate at Erisman because it was one of the MCC centennial events she thought would best fit into her schedule for the year. “I got the email and thought it sounded like fun,” said Buckley-Maidt, who served with MCC in the 1980s in Louisiana as well as at the Ephrata headquarters. At the end of the event, Janet delivered the comforters to the MCC Material Resource Center in Ephrata. From there, the comforters will be distributed to people in need throughout the world as a tangible sign of compassion in whatever crisis they may be facing. For instance, comforters have been delivered to people in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon in recent years in the wake of war in Syria and other violence in the region. To learn more about MCC and its centennial, readers may visit https://mcc.org.

Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief in more than 50 nations. Offering comforters and blankets has been one of the ways MCC has provided relief resources since the end of World War II. According to MCC representative Linda Espenshade, the organization sent more than 53,000 comforters to people in need in 2018, with approximately 30,000 of those comforters coming from MCC supporters on the East Coast. “Each comforter is unique and conveys a message of compassion,” stated J Ron Byler, MCC United States executive director. “People who get these comforters realize they are getting something personal. Someone has chosen the fabric and crafted each one with their hands. They understand this is a gift of love.” For The Great Winter Warm-Up, participants worked together to combine handmade comforter tops, warm batting, and sturdy backing fabric into durable comforters. The squares of fabric that make up the comforter tops had already been sewn together prior to the knotting sessions. At Erisman Mennonite Church, more than 80 volunteers worked together to complete a total of 111 comforters on Jan. 17 and 20. Janet Runion Patton, who leads the Sewing Circle that meets regularly at the church, said that the members of the group decided they would like to be a host site for The Great Winter WarmUp because they had hosted a day for knotting comforters in 2018. Erisman’s Sewing Circle meets at the church, located at 8 S. Erisman Road,

Sportsmen Post Event Schedule The Manheim Sportsmen’s Association, 552 Oak Tree Road, Manheim, has posted its upcoming schedule. Readers may visit www.manheimsportsmansassoc.org for information on all club activities. Applications are available by contacting the club. The monthly coffee hour for retirees and seniors will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, weather permitting. It is open to members and friends who are retired or semi-retired. First-time attendees are asked to call Charlie at 717951-6103. The club’s monthly membership meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. For more information, readers may

call 717-665-7729 or 717-587-6957. The Manheim Central High School rifle team has been using the indoor handgun and archery range since November 2019 and will finish its season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 8, with a tournament at Conestoga Valley High School. After the team’s schedule is complete, it will use the indoor range for parent/child practice and a parent/child match on three dates during the last week of February. Everyone who attends club activities during the winter months is reminded not to attempt to enter the club’s driveway if the weather is inclement. Drivers are asked to look for a “keep out” sign posted

at the driveway entrance. The club will hold a work day for winter cleanup and general maintenance in March. The event date is forthcoming. For more information, readers may call 717587-6957. Bingo will be played on Friday, March 13, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with bingo to start at 6:30 p.m. Only 300 tickets are available. For tickets and more information, readers may call 717-665-7729 or email membership@manheimsportsmansassoc.org. A complete listing of prizes may be found at www.manheimsportsmansassoc.org.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with appetizers, and dinner stations will open at 7 p.m. Silent and live auctions will begin at 8 p.m. Kiwanis Club member and event co-chair Ben Osterhout noted that numerous one-of-a-kind experiences will be up for bids, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and individuals. The concept for Denim & Diamonds came about last year when Kiwanis Club members brainstormed ideas for an event that would be unique, said Osterhout. Attire for the evening is theme-fitting or business casual. “We wanted something that would be casual, but at the same time if somebody wanted to dress up they could,” noted club member and event co-chair Linda Eberly. “It’s going to be a fun night with entertainment, food, and drink, and anyone is welcome,” Osterhout emphasized. To reserve tickets, interested individuals may contact Osterhout at 570-885-1752 or benosterhout@pakiwanis.org by Friday, Feb. 14. Diamond, Denim, and Partner levels of sponsorship are available. Donations of items and experiences for the auctions will also be accepted through Feb. 14. Kiwanis Club members have been working with Mount Joy Borough on plans for the proposed pavilion, which will be located at the site of the former tennis courts that were removed in 2015 due to deterioration. “Because of how much the field is used almost all year long for baseball and softball, a picnic pavilion will get a lot of use, too,” Osterhout said. Architectural plans and graphics of the pavilion will be on display at the Denim & Diamonds event. Kiwanis International is a global community of clubs dedicated to improving the lives of children. While the phrase is officially “third time is the charm” the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team was hoping to speed up the timing when they faced Section Two leading Warwick on January 21st. The two teams were meeting for the second time this season with the Bears looking to avenge a 22-point loss from January 3rd. Instead a 70-66 loss forced Elizabethtown to press pause on their revenge plans. “We are hoping to see them again, put it that way. It’s really tough to beat a team three times in a season and I think we are trending in the right direction,” said head coach Rocky Parise. As for the loss, Parise alluded to a tail of two games. “Beginning of the game was how we wanted it to go and the end of the game was how we wanted it to go but we hit some speed bumps in the middle frames. Warwick shot the lights out and made plays when they had to, they deserved to win.” The numbers back up Parise’s thoughts with E-town outscoring the hosts 42-32, in the opening and closing quarters but coming up short thanks to Warwick’s 38-24 run over the middle 16 minutes. Ryan Parise scored 13 of his team high 20 during E-town’s 25-13 fourth quarter blitz. Brody Beach joined the fun, drilling one of his four long-range bombs in the frame to finish with 12 points. Elijah Eberly picked up two points in the final frame but half of his 18-point tally came in the opening quarter. The Bears were forced to squeeze in a weather induced tune-up one night prior, dispatching Twin Valley on the 20th after a snow storm pushed the game back. “Weren’t really happy it was the day before Warwick, but it was a good tune up and got us in the right mindset,” said Parise. E-town had little trouble with the Raiders, sending them back to Elverson holding an 82-41 defeat. E-town held the scoring advantage in all four quarters but put the game away with a monster 28-8 run in the third frame. Eberly led a quartet of

two-minute mark of the night’s opening bout. Cade Cappello accounted for Elizabethtown’s final victory, knotting the match 12-12 with his 132-pound win over Josiah Smucker. Friday and Saturday sent the Bears to Manheim Township for the L-L Championships where Rice and Walters were the lone grapplers to return with hardware. Rice went 5-2 over the two-day affair with a pinfall win over Penn Manor’s Anthony Glessner earning the senior a fifth-place medal. Walters collected an eighth-place medal for his efforts with a shoulder injury forcing the junior to forfeit his final match. Wins over Franklin Liriano-Sena (Lebanon), Jonathan Rathman (Cocalico) and Joseph Fox (Donegal) sent Walters on his medal path. Two other Bears managed to leave with as many wins as losses. Ryan Findlay did his work in the 126-pound bracket where wins over Columbia’s William Cruz and Elco’s Dante Gifin balanced losses to Arik Harnish (L-S) and Dylan Demsky (Octorara). Rudy (145) knocked off LampeterStrasburg’s Hector Colon and Lebanon’s Luis Domingiuez in between losses to Northern Lebanon’s Conor Leonard and Octorara’s Michael Trainor. Mummau also posted a win, topping Elco’s Landon Brubaker in their consolation bout after a loss to Owen Breidgan of Northern Lebanon. The remaining seven wrestlers, Nathan

Thomas (120), Capello (132), Aiden Robinson (138), Kaiden Heaps (160), Ray Perez (195), Andrew Polizzi (220) and Kyler Heaps (285) also competed. SWIMMING The swimming teams kept their respective holds on second place in Section Two with matching lopsided wins over Manheim Central (110-50) and Conestoga Valley (122-47) last week. The Lady Bears posted wins of 128-35 over Central and 109-61 over CV. Each side improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in section meets. Against Manheim on the 23rd the Lady Bears won all 11 events which included a relay sweep. Lilly Rutkowski, Genevieve McDonald, Madison Conway and Rene Ottmans opened with a 2:10.27 in the 200-medley relay while Sierra Kapcsos, Rachel Handshew, Camille Donahue and Rutkowski closed out the meet with a win in the 400-freestyle. Kapcsos, Handshew, Lexi Fink and Emmy Kriner posted a 1:53.65 in the 200-freestyle relay. Gabby Walsh also earned wins in the 100 free (59.52) and the 100 back (1:04.12). Kapcsos with a 27.23 in the 50-free, Donahue with a 2:14.78 in the 200-free and Brooke Heisey’s 5:56.11 in the 500-free gave E-town a freestyle sweep. Fink (100-breaststroke), Kriner (100-butterfly) and McDonald (200-IM) rounded out the winners. Kapcsos fronted the January 21st

double-digit scorers with 18 points while both Ryan Parise and Luke Pierson finished with 17 points and Patrick Gilhool netted 10. Elizabethtown closed out their week on January 24th with a 79-66 win over Conestoga Valley. The Bears needed that strong second half after CV used a 17-13 second quarter push to slip into intermission holding a slim 31-29 lead. E-town switched things up at the break and applied some pressure defense that the Buckskins could not handle leading to a 10-point scoring edge in the third and a 15-point one in the fourth. Eberly led the charge with 16 of his career high 28 points coming after the break with the senior adding 11 rebounds. “He continues to play well and make big plays when we need it,” praised Parise. Ryan Parise chipped in with 18 points and nine assists while Beach’s 13 points and Gilhool’s 12 points rounded out the double-digit scorers. WRESTLING The wrestling team worked their way through a busy penultimate week of the regular season with losses to South Western and Garden Spot leading into the Lancaster-Lebanon League championships on the 24th and 25th. The Bears opened the week on January 20th with a 63-18 loss at South Western. E-town started the match strong, winning three of the first four bouts starting with Jake Rudy pinning Ethan Leitzel early in the third period of their 145-pound match. After a loss at 152, Kaidyn Heaps pinned at 160 and Cole Rice did the same to give Elizabethtown a short-lived lead at 18-6. The Mustangs claimed the final 10 matches to capture the win. Two nights later the Bears finished their L-L matches with a 59-18 loss to Garden Spot. Rice picked up another win, topping Ethan Eberly (170) by a 5-2 final. That was Elizabethtown’s final victory on the day and it came two matches after Bobby Walters (152) managed to slip by Drew Finkey, 3-2, in overtime. Wyatt Mummau (113) nabbed the first E-town win, pining Kyle Boyer just shy of the

Lady Chargers Post Back-to-Back CCAC Wins by Leah Sintic

The back-to-back CCAC wins came on Monday and Tuesday over Harrisburg Christian, 42-35, and Dayspring Christian, 53-33, where dynamic duo Kara Locker and Baughman dominated the offense in both contests, alternating who held the top point contribution. In Tuesday’s 42-35 conquest over the Harrisburg Knights, it was Locker who led the way with 18, and Baughman had 14. Haley Witmer was an inside

In a brief break from all the action, the team took a few moments to honor their four senior athletes who have brought leadership, skill, and personality to the tight-knit team. Haley Witmer, a four-year varsity player has also held roles such as class Chaplain, National Honor Society Secretary and a teacher’s assistant. Her post-graduation plans include heading to Lancaster Bible College to major in Elementary Education. “Haley always wants to learn more about the game and constantly asks good questions,” head coach Phil Ferrari noted. “I will miss her dependability and consistency next year, as well as the leadership she has provided to the younger players.” Naomi Ewing has balanced her four years of basketball with being captain of the soccer team, |class Treasurer, Student Council President, as well as being a member of National Honor Society, Athletic Council, Yearbook, and school musicals. Ewing plans to attend Lancaster Bible College to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice. Ferrari emphasized Ewing’s worth ethic when describing her contributions to the team dynamic. “Naomi lets her hard work and Photo by Cheri Sine hustle do her talking on the court, Mt. member of varsity volleyball and Media, has set her sights on attending college to focus on Business and Real Estate. On the court, Lehman has held several roles, showing versatility and a willingness to accommodate the needs of the team. “Brie has been with our program since she was a freshman and her roles have changed over the years. I appreciate her willingness to adapt and to focus on her defense and rebounding in order to help the team,” explained Ferrari. “We will miss Brie’s honesty, sarcasm, and sense of humor.” Kenzie Baughman, new to Mount Calvary this year, only had one season with the Lady Chargers, but has made quite the impact during her time. Off the court, Baughman also is a first grade Teacher’s Assistant, a member of National Honors Society and the high school Praise Team. After graduating, Baughman plans to complete a one-year Biblical studies program and then attend Lancaster Bible College to study Child Psychology. “Kenzie has been an amazing addition,” described Ferrari. “She’s an ultra-competitive player that has set high expectation for herself and her teammates. I will miss her competitive fire next year as well as her challenging questions that have made me a better coach.” BOYS’ BASKETBALL Three up three down, last week the Chargers made quick work of the opposition and picked up a trio of victories to improve their record to 15-2. Jack Hilsher’s 13 points led Mount Calvary in their 45-30 win over Lancaster Country Day last Thursday. The majority of those points came under late game free-throw pressure, and Hilsher rose to the occasion netting nine-of-eleven. Hunter Stewart and Aidan Masters supplied eight points apiece to balance the attack in a relatively low scoring contest for the squad. Tuesday’s 76-34 win over Harrisburg Christian put together a combination of team-wide success and senior night honors to treat the Mount Calvary crowd to an exciting night.

Twelve Chargers put points on the scoreboard, led by 10-point contributions from Hilsher, Stewart, Sam Robinson and Chip Stambaugh. “We have a lot of guys with great ability, so being well-balanced is a natural outcome of sharing the ball and playing hard,” noted head coach Kory Pruner. “The team truly wants the best for each other and knows that it is much more fun to win as a team.” Masters notched an additional nine points and made a big impact on the well-dispersed play by snatching six steals and dishing out seven assists. Harrison Crick’s defensive contributions included another six steals, converting to more time on the Charger offensive end. Consistency defined the Chargers’ first game of last week, with an 87-35 victory over Dayspring Christian Academy, in which the MC club put in roughly the same number of points in every quarter. The contest was at a close 24-18 Charger advantage after eight minutes, but while the MC boys managed to improve their tally by at least 20 each period, their intense defense limited Dayspring to single digits each subsequent quarter. Masters paced the team with 20 points, followed by 15 from Stambaugh, and another 10 knocked in by Stewart. Brett Taylor dished out four assists, and on defense, five steals from Hilsher helped swing momentum in Charger favor. During the senior night celebration, the team paused to reflect on accomplishments and influence attributed to the team’s four seniors. In addition to basketball, Jack Hilsher has played soccer and baseball, been class Vice President, a part of the Media program and was elected homecoming king this year. Hilsher plans to head to Word of Life Bible Institute in the fall and is open to how the Lord will have him serve in future ministry. “Jack is an inspiration to many and has been a steadfast leader in our program,” credited Pruner. “His

perspective on basketball, Jesus and life in general has taught me so much.” Harrison Crick has also played soccer, held the office of student council VP and been a part of Media team. Future plans for Crick include studying at Word of Life before pursuing a Criminal Justice degree at Lancaster Bible College. “Harrison has always been an outspoken champion of hard work and doing what is right,” Pruner said of Crick. “On the court he has identified his purpose and has executed it well; I know the same will be true of the places that God brings him in the future.” Sam Robinson is known as a leader on and off the court, also taking on that role in Media, as Senior Class President, National Honor Society and on the soccer field. Robinson also plans to attend Word of Life in the fall. See Chargers pg 8

and Albino. Add in Kready’s 99 and another 98 from Aivery Shuck and Elizabethtown earned a 595-594 win. BOWLING The E-town bowling team moved into a first-place tie with Warwick thanks to a 7-0 win over Lebanon on January 24th. Andrew Telenko’s 709 series, Eryn Moore’s 628 series and Alaina Telenko’s 611 series all helped the Bears to wins of 969-733, 1062-838 and 1022-959 for a 3053-2530 total pin count win and the 7-0 sweep. Daniel Eberle and Ben Davis both bowled two games to help out while Zach Wentzel and Zach Deardorff split the final two games. Elizabethtown started the week with a 6-1 win over Manheim Central on the 21st after a fluky 981-981 tie in the third game. E-town posted wins of 912-841 and 1030-885 to open the match which helped capture the overall pin count by a 2923-2707 tally. Thirteen different Bears saw action in the varsity match with only Moore and Alaina Telenko bowling more than one game but combing for just

four games. Eberle (264), Andrew Telenko (225), Gabe Berrier (221), Cole Kettering (213), Wentzel (205) and Davis (202) all enjoyed games over 200. Deardorff added a 199 while Josh Hammons checked in with a 193. Michael Hensel (151), Hannah Griffie (145) and Logan Ginder (135) rounded out the baker’s dozen. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team missed out on a perfect 4-0 week with a 45-22 loss to Red Lion on Saturday the 25th. Only six Lady Bears scored as Red Lion controlled three of the four quarters on their way to the 23-point win. Ainsley Raybold led the way with six points. Elizabethtown opened with a 51-36 win over Warwick on the 21st, avenging an overtime victory back on January 3rd. Elise Hassinger’s 16 points and Raybold’s 13 points helped the Lady Bears overcome Warwick’s early lead with the pair posting 24 of their 29 combined points in the final three quarters.

E-town made the short trip to Mt Joy one night later, returning with a 60-41 win thanks to double digit scoring advantages in both the first and third quarters. The combined 38-14 edge allowed Elizabethtown to absorb Donegal’s slim 27-22 advantage in the remaining two frames. Carly Sedun led the way with 15 points, Macy Seaman added 14 points and Raybold netted 10.

The Lady Bears closed out the week on the 24th with a 56-31 dismantling of Conestoga Valley. The bulk of Elizabethtown’s damage came in a 22-3 third quarter rush that turned a close 26-19 halftime game into a 26-point blowout heading into the final eight minutes. Jade Love-Morris collected a game high 15 points while Sedun added 10.

faith, character and leadership,” described Pruner. “He has also improved his game each year, and it’s been fun to see him succeed.” Senior night might be behind them, but the season is far from over for the Chargers who remain undefeated in CCAC competition (8-0) and face their final few weeks of regular season before embarking on what promises to be an exciting post-season journey.

“Sam has approached basketball similarly to other areas of lifewith humility, determination, excellence and proper perspective that always seeks to glorify his Savior,” stated Pruner pointing out that Sam’s contributions to the team dynamic couldn’t be described merely through statistics or highlights. Chip Stambaugh has been part of the MCCS family since eighth grade and has used his talents not only in the basketball program, but also varsity baseball and as a sound technician for the worship team. Chip has plans to join the National Guard and then pursue college to become an Officer. “Chip has shown growth in his

The stretch of daylight hours each day is already starting to increase as the calendar flips closer to the official start of spring, but groundhogs soon will have their annual moment to shine and declare whether the weather itself will yield six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Mount Joy Minnie will make her prognostication on Groundhog Day, Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary clock located at the intersection of Marietta Avenue and East Main Street in downtown Mount Joy. The community is invited to attend the festivities, which will begin with an opening ceremony at approximately 6:45 a.m. Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce executive director Kerry Meyers said that a large number of observers and a lot of noise are the key ingredients needed to wake Minnie from her hibernation. Minnie - a furry brown puppet - was Lancaster County’s first female groundhog to deliver a Groundhog Day prognostication, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, a

fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2007. Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, and the festivities took a hiatus before returning in 2010 when Nancy Shonk, then executive director of the Chamber, sought permission from Myers’ wife, Sharon, to bring Minnie back into commission. Each year, attendees are encouraged to use their imagination for the Crazy Hat Contest. Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second-, and third-place winners as voted on by the level of applause and cheering from the crowd. Past years have seen everything from cowboy hats to bonnets to top hats and more. Organized by the Chamber, the event’s advertising and hat contest prizes are sponsored by Keystone Lawn Company. Spot Light Media will sponsor the sound system, and Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 will serve hot beverages and refreshments. Shonk, who serves as Minnie’s handler and master of ceremonies at the event, said that Minnie’s prediction last year for six

more weeks of winter turned out to be accurate - but it did of course mean that Shonk and Minnie were met with resounding booing. As for this year’s forecast, people will just have to wait and see what the now-beloved puppet declares come sunrise on Groundhog Day. For more information, readers may call Shonk at 717-989-6452 or Meyers at 717653-0773. In the case of inclement weather, the crowd will gather under the portico at Northwest Bank, 101 E. Elizabethtown College professor of political science and endowed chair of international studies Oya Dursun-Ozkanca recently published the book “Turkey-West Relations: The Politics of Intra-alliance Opposition.” Dursun-Ozkanca’s book provides an examination of Turkey growing further apart from its Western allies. Since 2003, Dursun-Ozkanca has been researching and writing about Turkish foreign policy. In her book, she dissects six case studies regarding Turkish foreign policy over the past nine years, exploring an array of topics including Turkey’s foreign policy in relation to various nations and organizations, the refugee crisis, defense procurement, energy policies, and more. According to Dursun-Ozkanca, the book draws on extensive fieldwork and more than 200 semi-structured elite interviews

Oya Dursun-Ozkanca conducted with government officials, diplomats, academics, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organization officials, and journalists. The book, published by Cambridge University Press, is available for purchase on the Cambridge University Press website and on Amazon.
