Stephanie Hall began brainstorming ideas for her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, she let nothing stop her.
“I was looking for something that would help my community, and I knew my church was a good place to start,” said the member of Conoy Brethren in Christ Church.
“There was a bridge on the property that was older, and it looked like it needed to be redone. I had never worked with wood or with the tools to build a bridge, but I wanted to try.”
Stephanie, who is the daughter of Jeremy and Christine Hall of Mount Joy, approached members of her church with her idea to improve the bridge, which spans a small creek on the property and provides access to a gazebo, playground and pavilion.
“I sold rails for the bridge, and I got a wood-burning kit,” she said. “I learned how to personalize the rails with names or anything people wanted who purchased one. People loved the idea that they could add their name and designs like crosses or hearts. Some people purchased rails to honor family members who have passed away, and that was really special. It’s a nice way to make sure people don’t forget their names.”
Stephanie is a 2024 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School. She worked on her Gold Award project in the spring of 2024.
“The most challenging part of my project was getting a team of enough people together to build a bridge,” she said. “Getting volunteers was difficult, but then people
stepped up and it worked out.”
In fact, she said the teamwork aspect of her project turned out to be the best part.
“It was really fun,” she said. “A couple of my friends from my school and some family members helped. I got to know more people in my church. I didn’t realize how many people in my church could do construction and what people were capable of.”
Stephanie has been a Girl Scout since she entered the organization as a Daisy Scout
in kindergarten. She planned to enlist in the U.S. Navy after graduation, and she knew she wanted to earn her Gold Award before she aged out of Girl Scouts at 18.
“I wanted to make an impact in my community before I started traveling and before I left home,” she said. “It seemed like a good way to say goodbye.”
She completed basic training in Illinois in November, traveled to Florida for aviation school and graduated from that program in December.

Dads or father figures can treat the young ladies in their life to a night on the town when GEARS

If you walk into the headquarters of United Disabilities Services (UDS), located at 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, you’ll find more than a few reasons that dogs are commonly referred to as man’s best friend. The nonprofit organization provides highly trained service dogs for clients throughout Lancaster County and its surrounding areas, and each UDS dog is equipped with a special skillset to meet its owner’s needs.
In early January, an office on the second floor of UDS’ main building was temporarily converted into a kennel for a litter of young golden Labs. The six puppies were less than 3 months old and, like all new arrivals at UDS, adorable but unruly. After a 22-month training program, each dog will be obedient enough to accomplish tasks such as opening a door and picking up a TV remote from the floor. Outside the room of puppies, UDS volunteer Linda Rineer worked with CJ, a black Lab that

Rineer, a resident of the Buck who frequently travels to UDS’ facility to assist with training. “A lot of people think (service dogs) are working, but for them, it’s like playing ball all day.”
UDS service dogs specialize in different areas, and each canine is matched with a job that complements its personality traits and strengths.
Some dogs may have a calming presence that can help anxious children feel more comfortable in school, and others are perceptive enough to recognize the early signs of a traumatic flashback and rush to their owners’ side. Rineer said the fourth UDS dog she helped train was able to fetch bottles of water from the refrigerator for a client with mobility restrictions. The dog was even able to take the empty bottles to the recycling bin after the owner was finished.
In recent years, UDS has broadened its service area to include

“Each year, countless families eagerly anticipate this magical event,” said Erin Thomas, GEARS
clients within five hours of Lancaster County. The number of local school districts requesting a service dog has steadily increased as well, and UDS dogs currently serve nearly every school district in the county. Jennifer King, a member of the UDS service dog ambassador team, said many teachers testify that service dogs have reached students in ways no school staff member was able. “It’s the power of a wagging tail and a wet nose,” King said.
UDS relies on sponsorships and donations from the community to sustain its service dog programs. Each dog requires an investment upward of $25,000 to cover the cost of coaching and food during the 22-month training period, and financial support from individuals and businesses allows UDS to lessen the cost of acquiring a dog for clients.

fathers and daughters as they create lasting memories together.”
Thomas noted that the event is not just for dads.
“If Dad’s not available, (girls) are welcome to bring any important male in their lives, like a grandfather or older brother,” Thomas said. “Some families with multiple daughters bring their grandfathers too so each daughter has a date.”
The dance is open to people of all ages, and attendees in the past have been as young as 1 year old. Formal attire is encouraged but not required for the event.
“We have more than just dancing planned for the event, so there is something for everyone,” Thomas commented, noting that Occasions Disc Jockeys will provide music and Princess Rapunzel and Flynn Rider will make a special guest appearance. Girls can also enjoy a professional photo by Youth Sports Photo, face painting, Valentine’s Day crafts, “Minute to Win It”style games and light refreshments.
“It’s a magical night of bonding fun,” Thomas shared. “The venue creates an elegant ambiance, which then helps the participants feel like royalty for a night.”
GEARS has hosted the Daddy/ Daughter Dance for 15 years.
“Every year, the attendance grows,” Thomas said. “It has been such a pleasure to watch families return to the event every year.”
GEARS offers year-round events like the dance as part of its mission to connect with the community.
There is a charge for admission to the event, and preregistration is required for the event. To register, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717367-0355. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 7.
She’s now stationed on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier in Newport News, Va., where she is an aviation boatswain handler.
Once she completes her five-year contract with the Navy, she plans to continue her education, and she might start with online courses while she’s serving in the military.
After her service, she said she may pursue a career in music therapy, noting that she loves to play music.
“I went to Europe and toured five countries, playing percussion with 150 students,” she said. “I’ve done some really cool things with music.” Piano is her favorite instrument, but she plays other percussion, including timpani and snare drums, and she started learning to play the guitar.
She’s thankful for the experiences that Girl Scouts has given her.
“I had a best friend in Girl Scouts, and that kept me going,” she stated.
“Once we got into an older troop, we planned big trips to New York City, New England, Tennessee. We got to do a lot of really cool things, and we were really good at selling cookies.”
Model railroad club sets open houses
The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will hold open houses from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1 and 2.
Attendees will be able to watch trains of seven different scales running on more than 1,600 feet of track in the club’s space, which features seven display areas. Repeat visitors may discover new scenes. Admission is free, and donations will be accepted.
The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, available to girls in high school who create sustainable change for a community or world issue. To be eligible to earn the award, a girl must complete a minimum of 80 hours of work on her project.
“I think it’s a great experience to go for your Gold Award,” she said. “You can really make a big impact on your community.”
Stephanie is a member of the 2025 Gold Award Class for her council, and she’ll be recognized at a ceremony later this year.
The Model Railroad Club building is on Freemason Drive on the grounds of Masonic Village at Elizabethtown. Once on the campus, follow the directional signs. Ample parking is available.
The train club welcomes new members, and interested individuals may speak to current members at the open house. The club was founded in 1997.
