Celebrate Valentine’s Day at a Chocolate Walk
BY CAT SHANNON
On Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14, treat yourself or your sweetheart to a sweet time in Elizabethtown when LIV-ETown hosts the annual Mars Wrigley Chocolate Walk. The event will run from 4 to 8 p.m. throughout downtown Elizabethtown.
“Mars Wrigley and LIV-ETown invite everyone to ‘Fall in Love With E-Town!’” said Tony Gibble of LIV-Etown. Participants will purchase a box and walk through downtown businesses, collecting chocolates at each location. Twenty businesses will participate in the event.
“The event will also have a
Chocolate Lovers Menu pointing you to all of our local eateries that have a chocolate special,” said event organizer Clint Gibble.
“Those attending this event will be a part of a bustling community event full of small-town charm, big-heart vibes and themed to the language of love and chocolate.”
“You’ll also find activities and specials all around the downtown area. There will be a free
conversation hearts scavenger hunt with a grand prize of $150 in downtown gift cards.”
The Chocolate Walk will begin inside The Elizabeth, 18 N. Market St., where people will pick up a scavenger hunt sheet and receive their chocolate box.
“Those attending this event will be a part of a bustling community event full of small-town charm, big-heart vibes and themed to the language of love and chocolate,” Tony said.
Although the event promises a fun time for community members, it also serves another purpose, he noted. It allows LIV-ETown to continue community outreach initiatives to enhance the vitality of Elizabethtown.

You never know what treasures you might find in a building next to Hope Within Ministries at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. Inside The Trove, treasure awaits.

Are we alone in the universe? Tim Gallaudet doesn’t believe we are.
Gallaudet, a retired Naval rear admiral, will present a program called “Contact: UFOs, UAPs and Underwater Alien Landscapes” from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24. The program will be held in Gibble Auditorium on the campus of Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive.
The idea for the lecture came after Congress heard this past November from a variety of experts, both civilian and
but really we’re more of an upcycled shop,” said Audrie Schaller, who manages The Trove. “We don’t sell clothing other than some scarves and hats. We sell vintage jewelry, furniture and housewares.”
Proceeds from The Trove benefit Hope Within Ministries,
military, who presented on the topic of alien life as well as the presence of UFOs (unidentified flying objects), UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomena) and USOs (unidentified submerged objects).
“I was watching the congressional hearings on the government’s history and current awareness of UFOs, UAPs and the presence - as strange as it may sound - of alien life here on Earth,” said Jesse Waters, director of the Bowers Writers House on campus and organizer of the Elizabethtown program. “I was stunned ...
a nonprofit that provides medical and dental care as well as mental health counseling.
The Trove began as a pop-up shop inside Hope Within, but transforming the clinic space into a store after hours was time-consuming and difficult for the staff. When the separate building became available, the pop-up shop moved there, operating in the warmer months from the building and under tents in the parking lot.
It was then that Schaller realized the store needed a better name than “pop-up shop.” Working with Hope Within’s new director of development, she chose “The Trove” because of the word’s meaning: a store of valuable or delightful things.
Along with vintage items the store sells as-is, Schaller refinishes and upcycles much of the store’s inventory. She has sanded,
stained and painted buffets; stenciled artwork on furniture; added unique touches such as wallpaper to the inside of bookcases; and worked to bring solidly built, beautiful pieces back to life.
“While we are not your typical thrift store, rather a home and lifestyle shop that often sells upcycled things, we do try to have something for every budget,” Schaller said.
The space also features handmade items, including photography and paintings, from local artists.
Schaller originally worked for Hope Within as development director, but when she retired, she still wanted to volunteer with the organization. Now she and Robin Bush, who is a nurse with Hope Within, spend hours each week preparing items for sale at The Trove and creating enticing displays.
Hope Within Ministries began as a free medical primary care clinic in 2006. It serves residents of Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties who are medically uninsured and financially eligible. Services have expanded to include free common prescription medications; donation-based oral health screenings, education, cleanings and other dental care; and counseling on a self-pay, income-based, negotiated fee, with no eligibility requirements.
Hope Within’s typical patients are people who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but who cannot afford health care from the marketplace. The organization also provides free medical supplies, such as crutches, for people who need them.
be “Celebrate Mom and Spring Flower Sale.”
For the April event, Schaller noted that The Trove will feature donated items that are quality things but don’t fit in with the vibe of the store or haven’t sold yet. “It’s going to be set up like a yard sale,” she said. “These are nice items that someone is going to love.”
The Trove accepts donations of items, and anyone who is interested in donating should contact Schaller through Hope Within’s website, www.hopewithin.org.
And if you’ve been to The Trove before, Schaller encourages you to visit again because the inventory is always changing.
The Trove operates on the first Friday and Saturday of each month, and each sale has a theme. This month’s sale, on Feb. 7 and 8, is “Love Your Neighbor.”
It’s a labor of love for both women, who enjoy indulging their creative sides while supporting the organization’s mission. Schaller enjoys scouring sales for pieces or finding unique donations from the community, which she stores in a shed near the building until they are ready to be sold.
Concert to raise funds for medical research
Elizabethtown College’s Education Organization (EdOrg) will present an A-T Benefit Concert on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center on the Elizabethtown College campus, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown.
The goal of the event is to raise money for the A-T Children’s Project to fund research into ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T). A-T is a rare, inherited childhood neurological disorder that affects the part of the brain that controls motor movement - intended movement of muscles - and speech.
There is a fee, with a discount for students and staff members. Community members are welcome to attend.
For more information and updates, visit www.instagram .com/etown_edorg/ or search for @EdOrg Etown on Facebook. Information is also available by visiting https://atcp.org/event/ etown/ or emailing edorg@ etown.edu.
EdOrg consists of education majors at Elizabethtown College. The group promotes education-related community service and volunteering.
The Trove will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 7 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 8. On March 7 and 8, the theme is “March Madness,” while on April 4 and 5, it’s “Spring Cleaning and Yard Sale.” May’s event, on May 2 and 3, will
“I’ll find pieces that are beautiful just as they are or that maybe need a little sprucing up,” she said. “I love styling things and giving people an idea of how they can use the things in the store. That’s part of the fun, and it also makes us different than other thrift shops. We’re a thrift shop, but we’re a little bit more, too.”

“I served in the Navy as an oceanographer for 32 years,” Gallaudet shared. “Confirmation that UAPs are interacting with humanity came for me in January 2015 when I was serving as the commander of the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command. At the time, my personnel were participating in a pre-deployment naval exercise off the U.S. East Coast that included the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group. This exercise was overseen by the United States Fleet Forces Command, led by a four-star admiral who also served as my superior officer.”
During the exercise, Gallaudet received an email from the operations officer of Fleet Forces Command, detailing the occurrence of near-midair collisions that were interfering with the flights, but which could not be explained.
Attached to the email was a video showing an unidentified object “exhibiting flight and structural characteristics unlike anything in our arsenal,” Gallau det recalled. “The implication of the email was clear: The author was asking whether any of the recipients were aware of classi fied technology demonstrations that could explain these objects.”
The next day, the email disap peared from his account and the
Now a private citizen, Gallaudet hopes that by holding lectures like this one at Elizabethtown College, he will be able to share his insights on UAPs and give audiences something to think about.
Waters encourages people to come to the program with an open mind.
“Whether you believe in ‘little green men’ or not or simply wonder about what our government has on record in terms of human experience with life other than ours, this will be a fantastic chance to spend time with someone who’s on the cutting edge of this information,” he said. “The slides he has and his personal story are compelling and fascinating.”

“It takes a lot of time and effort to offer the free community events that LIV-ETown does, but it also takes money, and we are so thankful to Mars Wrigley partnering with us for this event as the goal is to raise the money for our insurance required for all these events as well as some other operating expenses,” Tony shared. “We are also thankful to have Mars as a yearly sponsor along with our other yearly sponsors, DDMP Investment Advisors and Myers Advantage Realty.”
He also emphasized his gratitude for the community members who come out to support events like this one and people who purchase a “My Town, E-Town Sticker Book” or items from the LIV table at each event.
“It all helps keep this going strong,” he said. Along with the Chocolate Walk, LIV-ETown hosts Second Friday events throughout the year, coordinates an annual Christmas tree lighting, organizes a summertime strawberry social and more.
