Local Partnership Has Global Impact Deep in the interior jungle regions of the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu, NiVan villagers gather their jugs to begin the more-thanone-hour hike each way to collect water. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Flemmens, Messiah College’s director of The Collaboratory, wraps up preparations for The Collaboratory’s Monday night discipleship meeting with students. Two very different worlds collide when The Collaboratory teams up with Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) to complete life-changing community transformation projects in various regions around the globe. “Our Collaboratory mission statement boils down to two things: changing the world and changing us,” shared Flemmens. “(Working with FIA), we have the opportunity to do good projects in various places around the globe. This changes our interface with our learning and the application of what we are learning. At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in See Friends In Action pg 3

Even though he is only 14 years old, Logan Conrad, a freshman at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), has already learned important leadership skills such as event planning, public speaking and multitasking as a candidate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) 2019 Students of the Year program. As part of the seven-week initiative, which began on Jan. 13, select high school students from around the country participate in a fundraising competition to benefit LLS. So far, Logan has planned and held a cornhole tournament in which 20 teams took part. Proceeds from select food and beverages sales during the event were also donated to LLS. See LLS Program pg 2

who raises the most money for LLS in a 10-week period. Although he was nominated, Logan said he was not sure that he would participate. However, he quickly became committed after hearing more about the program. “We were invited to an LLS workshop in Harrisburg in November 2018 for candidates from central Pennsylvania to learn about the campaign and some skills we might use,” he explained. “I used that as a deciding factor, and I decided that I wanted to run.” Logan said he was moved by the speakers at the workshop. “While we were there, (we heard from) a few speakers who had cancer,” Logan stated. “ While they were talking, I realized how lucky I was because no one close to me had cancer or blood cancer specifically. A lot of people are not as lucky as me, and I wanted to give back.” Proceeds from the cornhole tournament and the restaurant fundraisers were tallied by the LLS of Central Pennsylvania in Camp Hill. Candidates are not allowed to reveal how much they raised at various events until the end of the program on
Saturday, March 2. “All candidates and their teams are invited to a gala on March 2 at Historic Acres of Hershey,” Logan said, noting that he will be in attendance at the event. “They will announce that night who wins the title.” According to www.studentsoft heyear.org, the Student(s) of the Year will receive a $5,000 scholarship toward the college or university of their choice. Participants also have an opportunity to win a Citizenship Award. That winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship toward the college or university of his or her choice. Logan, who is planning to pursue a career as an anesthesiologist, said that his involvement in the LLS campaign has been a great learning experience. “I’ve done a lot of speaking - both one-on-one and in large groups,” he said. “I feel as though the communication aspects - learning how to talk to people and how to relate to different kinds of people - have served me well.” For more details or to donate, readers may visit http:// tinyurl.com/llsconrad. various places around the world.” As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce structural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island. In June 2018, Dr. Brian Swartz’s engineering students worked with FIA to construct a pedestrian bridge above a 20foot ravine in Rama Cay that prevented access to a proposed medical center and baseball field from the villagers’ new hurricane-resistant homes. Messiah’s Dr. Phillip Tan also visited the Rama in December 2018 to conduct microbiological and chemical analyses of water sources.
“We are pleased to host Messiah’s students with engineering projects that apply their learning to solving real-world problems and meeting tangible needs that demonstrate God’s love,” noted Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. The latest partnership of FIA and Messiah’s Collaboratory will provide clean water through 16 miles of gravity-fed piping to more than 3,500 NiVan people in Vanuatu - covering 30 villages, two clinics, and three schools. Messiah’s Dr. Thomas Soerens visited the region with FIA after learning about the need of the villagers. “I hear your organization is a friend to the people of my village,” wrote Alani, a NiVan villager. “I write to you in need. The dry season is come, and I cannot catch enough rain water to care for my family. I ask you for water. Please come soon to help my family and my people. We will not make it through the dry season without help.” The NiVan tribal leaders are already familiar with and grateful for FIA’s efforts to combine
construction projects with the spread of the Gospel. The completion of a 6-kilometer road connecting 19 NiVan villages with schools and a medical clinic in 2011 resulted in faster medical transport and supply delivery, as well as more than 240 villagers coming to know Christ. Since 2017, The Collaboratory at Messiah College has partnered with FIA to secure a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond. The community is invited to join the efforts of FIA and Messiah College by providing financial support, donating construction materials, or taking part in a short-term work trip. For more information, readers may contact FIA at 717-546-0208 or fia-usa@fiaintl.org or visit www.fiaintl.org.
Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser To Support Adoption Local residents Kevin and Sammi Simmons invite the community to “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit the couple’s adoption journey. and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them. The Academic Kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early age 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-andpencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced, and students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read. The school reports that many children learn to read before completing Academic Kindergarten. Dayspring’s Developmental Kindergarten and Academic Kindergarten programs are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For parents who desire to supplement these or who
simply need a five-day option, IDEA! (Inspire, Discover, Explore, and Achieve) is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program offers a community style of learning, as well as a focus on direct Bible reading, science and history, STEM, collaborative group projects, history character studies, other creative avenues, and more. In addition to kindergarten and the supplemental kindergarten program, Dayspring offers preschool programs for children who are age 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays
Legopalooza - that glorious event where children and adults may play with hundreds of thousands of tiny building blocks without having to worry about picking up the many, many pieces (or accidentally stepping on them in bare feet later) - will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. The third annual day of creative play will be held at Wrightsdale Baptist Church, 310 Little Britain Road, Peach Bottom. People of all ages are welcome to participate in Legopalooza. While most of the action will take place with Legos in the main room, a smaller room will be
open for young children to play with Duplo blocks, which are easier for little fingers to manipulate and practically impossible for anyone to swallow. Legopalooza is presented by the church in conjunction with Quarryville Library, Solid Rock Youth Ministries, Elizabethtown Public Library, and Oxford Public Library. Elizabethtown and Quarryville libraries will provide 20 gallons of Legos each. “It’s a lot of Legos,” commented Quarryville Library youth services coordinator Randi Kennedy. She noted that the libraries will each have a corner with a unique activity, and a carracing station will be located in the center of the room. Attendees will receive Lego passports, as supplies last, that they can complete by visiting each activi-

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers and kindergartners to its Early Childhood Education Open House on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. The open house will feature a Valentine’s party that will focus on 1 Corinthians 13:13, which states, “The greatest of these is love.” Parents will meet with teachers and learn the distinctives of the Principle Approach, the method of education that is used at Dayspring and that was used during the Colonial and founding periods in America. According to headmaster Dr. Mike Myers, the Principle Approach is rooted in the Word of God. Dayspring offers two kindergarten programs - Developmental Kindergarten and Academic Kindergarten - in which children begin to learn the rudiments of subjects such as science, history, and geography while learning to view God as the Author of every subject. Both kindergarten classes incorporate field studies, as well. The Developmental Kindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure
ty. These will include a free build station, where anything may be built, and an “I Spy” challenge, where participants will be challenged to find specified items in the bins and buckets of blocks. Everyone who completes the challenges at each station will be entered to win a prize. There is no cost to attend Legopalooza. Children must be accompanied by adults. “As long as the kids come and have fun, that’s a win for us,” Kennedy remarked. “It’s great PR to let folks know about our services. We’ve heard (attendees say) they didn’t know (Quarryville Library) existed or had Legos.” For more information about Legopalooza, readers may call Kennedy at 717-786-1336 or visit www.quarryvillelibrary.org.

Museum Slates LunchTIME Event The February edition of the LunchTIME presentation at the NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will feature museum staff as they explore and uncover the details of the effects of the Art Deco movement in horology, or the study of the measurement of time, and how its influence differs from that of Art Nouveau and Streamline Moderne. The Art Deco LunchTIME Talk is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13, at noon. Art Deco, or Style Moderne, was a movement in art and design that originated in the 1920s and became popular in Western Europe and the United States in the 1930s. Its stylized look influenced design in many everyday objects, including clocks and watches. From December through March, museum hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From April through November, the museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the museum is also open on Mondays. Discounts are available to seniors, students, AAA members, and groups of 10 or more. Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to call ahead. For more program information, directions, or general museum information, readers may call 717-684-8261 or visit www.museumoftime.org.

The volunteer tax preparers at United Way’s free tax preparation sites understand the 2018 TCJA (tax reform). They go through at least 40 hours of training and are certified by the IRS. The purpose of the program is to provide customers with high-quality, professional, personal service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. The IRS will delay issuing refunds for taxpayers claiming the EITC and ACTC until Friday, Feb. 15. The law is designed to help the IRS find and stop fraud. However, the IRS notes that these refunds likely will not arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until late February. Bethel AME To Celebrate GEARS Sets Activities 200 Years Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, located on Fairview Avenue in Marietta, is marking the 200th year of its founding this year. The church was organized in 1819 by escaped slaves and free people of color who met outside of Marietta in an area known as Heisey Woods. In 1822, the congregation purchased a carriage house, remodeled it, and called it Bethel. In 1861, this building was destroyed when vandals set it on fire, but the congregation rebuilt another church on the same site. In 1969, the church was blessed by Mrs. Anthony Resch, and the old church was torn down and a new one was built at the same location. Bethel AME Church is recognized as the oldest continuously operating church in Marietta.
Graves of 20 black Civil War veterans are buried in the church cemetery, including Wesley Armstrong, who fought with the Massachusetts 54th U.S. Colored Infantry, which was featured in the film “Glory.” The church is planning several events throughout the year to commemorate its 200th anniversary milestone. To kick off the “Celebrate 200” project, a Valentine Musical featuring local talent will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. at the church. All are invited to attend. A “Celebrate 200” banquet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Heritage Hotel in Centerville, and an anniversary worship service is also being planned to be held in the future. Information on these two events and others will be forthcoming. Everyone is invited to attend the events.

best in Pennsylvania. “Attendance exploded,” said Mullineaux. “One year, we hit 4,000 (riders).” The ride is now restricted to 2,300 participants. It begins at the HACC Lancaster campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Several routes will be offered. The 62-mile metric century route will head north to New Holland, Farmersville, Terre Hill, and Reamstown, before turning south to return to HACC. Seven covered bridges will be part of the route. Additional routes include a 31-mile course with four covered bridges and a 15-mile ride with two covered bridges. One option adds a loop at Stevens that travels 32 difficult miles for riders who wish to complete a more challenging ride. Pictured on front: Bicyclists take part in the Covered Bridge Ride organized each August by the Lancaster Bicycle Club. The ride raises funds that the club uses to give out grants to area organizations for bicycles, bike racks, signage, and more. Applications for this year’s grant program are due by Feb. 15.

“We have given out $350,000,” said John Mullineaux of the Lancaster Bicycle Club (LBC). “The single biggest (amount) was for municipal and EMS (emergency medical services) bike patrols. We’ve purchased bicycles and equipment (for those organizations).” Mullineaux added that Lancaster police and police stations in a number of county boroughs have received funds from the club to purchase bikes. LBC is currently seeking applicants so that the club can give away another $25,000 in grants. Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and schools. The application form may be found at https://lancasterbikeclub.net/ grant-program. Completed applications are due to the club by Friday, Feb. 15. “It is a simple application process,” said Mullineaux. “We ask for a short description of what they will do (with the funds) and how much they want.” Mullineaux said that the application form also asks what the organization will do if it does not receive the grant. “I pull all the applications together and do a presentation for the board, and they (usually) vote up or down,” said Mullineaux, who added that sometimes the amount of the grant request is modified by the group. Those receiving grants must initiate their projects during the 2019 calendar year. The grants were first given in 1990. Over the years, the types of requests that have been granted have varied. “We have spent money on bicycle advocacy,” recalled Mullineaux. “We have spent more than $30,000 on
bicycle racks.” Mullineaux said many bicycle racks seen in Lancaster city and around the county were provided by the club. The club has also purchased road signs and bicycles for elementary school gym classes that were used to teach bicycle safety. Mullineaux said that one of the most unusual awards was to the mural project at the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail near Columbia. A part of the 250-foot-long mural will show a bicycle rider on the trail. In addition to the $25,000 grants, LBC also donates $5,000 to the county to help defray costs of maintaining covered bridges and $5,000 to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, for student scholarships. The scholarship program grew out of the 450-member club’s annual Covered Bridge Ride. The ride, which dates back 40 years, was originally just for club members. “We expanded (the ride) to include visitors because of the great place Lancaster County is,” said Mullineaux. Originally, the intention of the ride was to raise funds to augment the club’s budget, but in the 1990s, Bicycling magazine listed the ride as the

Community Place Receives Donation Community Place on Washington in Elizabethtown received a donation of $5,000 from Northwest Bank on Jan. 11. Community Place is a collaborative effort among United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) and community members, organizations, businesses, and social service providers to establish a centralized location for community services. The location is currently home to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown and provides office space for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) and Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). UCEA embarked on a capital campaign in April 2018 to purchase the old Catholic Parochial School on Washington Street and repurpose the property for social services programs for the community. Phase one of the campaign included purchasing the property and remodeling existing buildings to accommodate office space, a new location for the food pantry, and space for the winter shelter. UCEA estimated that $500,000 would be needed to complete phase one. Through December 2018, UCEA raised
approximately $390,000 toward the goal. Plans to erect a new building on the campus and host a variety of additional programs will require another $1.2 million to $1.3 million in capital campaign fundraising. Land development is underway for phase two. More information is available at www.Community Place Etown.org.
Community Place in Elizabethtown recently received a $5,000 donation from Northwest Bank. Taking part in the check presentation were (from left) Nancy May, Northwest Bank regional president; Susan Fritz, vice president of United Churches of Elizabethtown; Doug Lamb of United Churches of Elizabethtown and Community Place; and Todd Keagy, senior vice president of Union Community Bank, which is slated to merge with Northwest Bank in March.

humans reflecting God. Illustrating this creative problem-solving, Bornman shared the story of M.J. Sharp and his work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sharp, who was murdered in 2017, creatively sought to promote peace in a challenging setting. Bornman’s main purpose in sharing this story was to emphasize how the creativity of God within humanity can be used to do good in the world. Several students who were in attendance had been raised as Muslims but had later converted to Christianity. One student shared they were surprised at how openly the presenters could discuss theological differences in a respectful manner. EMM’s Christian-Muslim Relations Team, of which Bornman is a member, seeks to encourage church leaders to interact with Muslim clerical leaders. Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) worker Jonathan Bornman presented at an event on Nov. 30, 2018, at Tyndale Theological Seminary in Badhoevedorp, Netherlands. The event’s theme was “A Dialogue Comparing the Divine and the Human in Islam and Christianity.” Along with Bornman, the presenters included Dr. Yaser Ellethy, Dr. Khalid Hajji, and Dr. Bert de Ruiter. The Muslim and Christian scholars had been invited to participate by Tyndale professor and EMM worker Dr. Philip A. Gottschalk. Attendees were predominately seminary students and faculty, but community members were also present. Gottschalk hosted the event as part of a course he teaches titled “Ethics of War, Peace, and Peacemaking.” Bornman, a Christian-Muslim relations consultant, highlighted the belief that humanity is created in the image of God. He said that humans’ ability to creatively solve problems is an example of

Chargers Move to 10-0 in Conference Play by Leah Sintic
With two more wins last week, the MC Chargers continue their undefeated streak in the CCAC, now 10-0 in conference play, and boosted their overall record to 14-5. Juniors Jack Hilsher and Chip Stambaugh paced the Chargers in last Monday’s 58-32 win over Lebanon Catholic, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively. Stambaugh collected eight of his points in a first-quarter surge that provided the MC squad with an 18-11 lead after the period, which they managed to maintain throughout the Photo by Cheri Sine physical contest. Mt. Calvary’s Jack Hilsher turns to make the outlet pass after “I thought the physical nature of grabbing a rebound in the Chargers’ 58-32 nonleague win over the game was due to two teams who Lebanon Catholic last Monday. wanted to get the ball inside and also play tough man defense,” described head coach Kory Pruner. “These are goals of our every game,
so seeing the team respond to LC’s physicality with some fight of their own was nice to see.” Hilsher and Damian Rutt (five points), each knocked down a three-pointer in the early minutes to aid in establishing the lead, and Tyler Masters spaced his nine-point contribution evenly over the four quarters for a well-balanced attack. The second half was all about capitalizing on the lead already established, and improving their position. “We continued to get the ball inside and had a great defensive quarter,” Pruner described of the third period. Hunter Stewart was a major component of that defensive game, picking off five steals, grabbing nine rebounds, and a block. Transitioning his efforts to the offensive end, Stewart secured six points, including two-of-two at the line, and dished
out three assists. With a good handle on the contest heading into the final frame, the Chargers dispersed their offense, outshooting Lebanon 17-11, but even more impressive was that eight different players netted those 17 points. Evan Barnes continues to be a longrange threat, hitting a triple, and Sam Robinson and Wyatt Lamb each got on the scoreboard with a field goal. “We have been preaching ball movement and getting good shots,” elaborated Pruner. “As that happens, more guys naturally get involved in scoring. It’s a combination of selfless play and working to transition quickly into our offense that gets more guys involved.” Thursday night, the Chargers took down Lancaster Mennonite Hershey, 79-28, led by 16 points from T. Masters. Comfortably in the lead after the first quarter, the MC squad shared the ball and sought to execute a well-balanced game plan. Stewart notched 13 points, A. Mas-
ters netted 10, while Leighland Olsen and Hilsher put in nine apiece. Heading into the home stretch of the regular season, Mount Calvary looks to keep their CCAC record untarnished and set themselves up for an exciting post-season. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL With an injury plaguing the Lady Chargers’ leading scorer, it was a good time for a slow week. Mt. Calvary made the most of their first game after a six-day break, picking up a big win against Lancaster Mennonite Hershey last Thursday, 59-29. Heading into the contest without Kara Locker, who averages over ten points per game, the team made adjustments in an effort to not lose offensive momentum and at the same time, crank up the intensity of their defensive game play. “We gave up 42 points to them in our first game which is the most we’ve given up against a league opponent,” head coach Phil Ferrari reflected on the teams’ meeting during the first week of January in which See Chargers pg 11

ET Bowlers Blank Hempfield, Ephrata The Elizabethtown bowling team keeps rolling along, picking up two more 7-0 victories, their ninth and 10th such wins of the season. The first of the two came on January 24th over Hempfield. Patrick Hoffmaster and Elizabeth Vuxta went pin for pin in a battle for top bowler in the match. Hoffmaster came out on top but just barely. He beat out his fellow senior by one pin, 695-694, despite Vuxta posting the high game for the match, a 257 in the opening game and followed with games of 235 and 202. Hoffmaster also posted his best game right out of the shoot, starting with a 245 and following with games of 209 and 241. Katelynn Garman finished just off her teammates’ pace with her 678 series. Garman matched Vuxta’s hot start with a 257 of her own, while a 216 game two and a 205 game three rounded out her match. Abby Chaffins was the last Bear bowler to take part in all three games, posting a 246, 192 and 211 to finish with a 649 series. Bradly Ruth (178), Andrew Telenko (186) and Ben Davis (167) teamed up to take the final spot in the starting five. Elizabethtown’s next 7-0 win came on January 30th over Ephrata. Head coach Frank Telenko went with just five bowlers on the day with Chaffins posting the top individual game with her opening 236. She added games of 202 and 191 for a 629 series which left the door open for Ruth to take the top spot. He posted games of 220, 215 and 197 for a match high 632 series.
Chargers from pg 10 Mount Calvary triumphed 52-42. “We wanted to play more aggressively and improve our defense,” he summarized. This time, holding LMH to only 29 points, the Lady Chargers achieved both their defensive and offensive goals. That aggressive offense Ferrari described was spurred by a massive effort from junior Haley Witmer, who netted 23 points in the contest,
Garman missed a 600-series by one pin thanks to games of 202, 165 and 232. Hoffmaster settled into the four hole for the match with games of 183, 182 and 219 leading to a 584 series. Vuxta closed out the match with a 553 series that she put together with games of 212, 168 and 173. In between the two 7-0 wins was Etown’s first experience of the season on the other side of that final. The loss went down on January 28th with the Section Two leading Warwick Warriors inflicting the damage. A trio of Lady Bears finished within five pins of each other with Garman taking the top spot with a 591 series. Garman followed an opening 202 with a 225 before tailing off for a 164 game three. Vuxta closed out her threegame run with back-to-back 191 games after opening with a 205. Chaffins completed the trio with her 586 series putting her one pin behind Vuxta in the team’s pecking order. Chaffins was consistent over her three games with a 193, 203 and 190. Hoffmaster was the final Bear to bowl all three games, finishing with a 554 series. E-town’s final spot was split between Eryn Moore and Telenko with Moore posting a 189 and 161 in her two games of work. Telenko stepped in for game three and finished with a 183. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Elizabethtown girls’ basketball team spent the better part of January playing scorching hot basketball but the Lady Bears saw their hot streak end thanks to a 50-32 loss to Red Lion on January 26th. The setback ended a run of seven wins in nine games that includfollowed by 12 from Naomi Ewing. Freshman Marlie Niedwick also stepped up big for MC, netting a season-high 10 points. “We are in contention for both league and district playoffs,” noted Ferrari. “We are focused on taking care of what we control and trying to finish the season playing at our highest level.” With only four games to go, and a current CCAC record of 6-4, and overall record of 9-8, each upcoming game will be pivotal to accomplishing their post-season aspirations.
ed five straight which pushed the Lady Bears to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in L-L play. Red Lion was able to take advantage of an Elizabethtown squad that was playing their second game in as many days to pull away over the final 16 minutes. That 30-16 second half run pushed the Lady Lions lead from a mere four points at intermission to the 18-point final. Only a total of nine players managed to score in the game, four for Elizabethtown and five for Red Lion. Marena Lonardi and Sydney Pierson led the way for the Bears with 10 points each but they were topped by Alleney Klunk, Paige Fey and Makiah Shaw who each enjoyed 12-point games for Red Lion. Ainsley Raybold (seven points) and Emma Blyler (five points) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Bears. One night earlier Elizabethtown was able to blow by Conestoga Valley by a 52-36 final. The Lady Bears controlled the first three quarters before taking their foot off the gas which allowed CV to hold a 16-9 edge in the fourth. Lonardi led the way with 23 points, scoring six of Elizabethtown’s 10 first quarter points to help open a 10-6 lead. Lonardi added another six points to her tally during E-town’s 16-10 second quarter run with Raybold matching that number thanks to two long distance bombs. The third quarter saw E-town stretch their lead to 23 points thanks to a 17-4 edge in the frame spurred by another two Raybold three-pointers before the CV controlled fourth put the final margin at 16 points. Thanks to those four long range bombs Raybold finished with 14 points while Pierson added eight to the winning effort. Blyler’s three points along with two-point games from Macy Seaman and Jade Love-Morris added to Elizabethtown’s offense for the night. RIFLE It took the E-town rifle team nine matches over the course of the season’s first five weeks to absorb a loss. It only took them one week to get hit with a second loss. The 498-494 setback opposite Ephrata on January 24th dropped the Bears to 9-2 on the year and into a first-place tie with Manheim Township with just over a week remaining in the season. Cole Ginder was the lone perfect shooter for Elizabethtown against Ephrata with Matt Risbon and Tyler Chapman just off that pace with matching scores of 99. Aaron Tetkoskie and Jagger Gilleland rounded out the E-town top five with scores of 98. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Mother Nature’s attempt at wreaking havoc on the high school basketball season proved successful as a blanket of snow combined with a
deep freeze left L-L schools scrambling to reschedule numerous games over the past week. The result for the Bears’ hoops squad was a single game on January 25th which ended up a 7551 victory over Conestoga Valley. E-town did the bulk of their heavy lifting in the opening frame where they outscored the Buckskins 22-12 to account for 10 of the 24-point final margin. A 20-15 run through the second quarter pushed the lead to 15 points at halftime while a slow, 15-13, third stanza increased the lead by just two points. The Bears regained their early mojo to post an 18-11 fourth quarter edge for the 75-51 final. Larry Locker led all scorers with 26 points to go with five rebounds while Dylan Sweger drained four from long range to finish with 12 points. Ryan Parise nearly match Sweger’s long range bombing, finishing with three, adding three assists and two steals to his 11 points. Amos Kollie was the final Bear in double digits with 10 points. Elijah Eberly just missed making it five with his nine-point game. WRESTLING The Elizabethtown wrestling team got a jump start on the postseason with
a trip to New Holland on January 25th and 26th for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Individual Championships. Only one Bear managed to make it to the medal stand with three others finishing their weekend just shy, falling in what head coach Mike Sernoffsky called “the blood round” of the consolation bracket. Cameron Olson was that lone medalist, going 3-3 on his way to a sixth-place finish in the 120-pound draw. Despite taking three losses over the two-day affair Olson can take a tiny bit of solace in the fact that only two wrestlers got the better of him. Pequea Valley’s Jace Beegle handed Olson an 8-7 loss in the championship quarterfinals with a 10-3 final in the consolation bracket ending Olson’s weekend in sixth place. Olson’s only other loss was to Garden Spot’s Garrett Gehr, who went on to finish third, in the consolation semifinals. Mixed in with those losses was a 14-3 major decision win over Donegal’s Taj Younger, an 8-6 win over Conestoga Valley’s Rafael Rodriguez and a pinfall win over Marshall Adams of Warwick. Wyatt Mummau opened his run at the L-L championship with a 9-4 win over Pequea Valley’s Liam McGinley but
had his 106-pound title hopes dashed in the second round. Mummau picked up two more wins in the consolation bracket before bowing out of the tournament with a loss to Penn Manor’s Caleb Banzoff. The two consolation wins came over Cedar Crest’s Sam Smith and ELCO’s Javier Zuck. Tyler Lanza followed a similar path to Mummau’s but managed just one consolation win before bowing out with a loss to ELCO’s Trey Donmoyer. Lanza’s two 182-pound wins came over Lancaster Catholic’s Henry Gartley in the championship bracket and Annville-Cleona’s Steven Colledge in the consy bracket. Javan Thomas was the final Bear to post a near-miss at the league tournament, going 1-2 in the 170-pound bracket. Thomas’ lone win came in the second round after enjoying a first round bye. The senior topped Conestoga Valley’s Conrad Dillman by a 10-8 count. Thomas had to bow out of his quarterfinal bout opposite Warwick’s David Hnasko due to injury which also prevented him from continuing on in the consolation bracket. That meant an easy forfeit win for Garden Spot’s Jacob Zook and an end to Thomas’ weekend.

opportunities, and there will be a chocolate-themed sculpture in the mix. “It’s a wide variety, and they will be great for taking photos,” said DeKarske. This year, a stage will be set up in the square to provide live musical entertainment on Feb. 15 and 16. Local Scout troops will build bonfires for marshmallow roasting on Feb. 15 in the evening. Up to five nonprofit organizations, including Victory Church, Grace Church, Lititz Christian School, and Trinity Church, will have display tables located in Lititz Springs Park on Feb. 15. To add a little heat to the event, the park will also be the site of a fire-related pyrotechnic surprise on Feb. 15. The display will run periodically from 5 to 9 p.m. “Last year, flames literally shot into the air every 30 minutes,” recalled DeKarske. About 20 food trucks, offering a variety of foods, including burgers, barbecue, kettle corn, funnel cakes, and french fries, for purchase will line Broad Street. As is tradition, the Lions and Leos have several events planned
to take place at Warwick High School, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Feb. 16. The annual Chili Cook-Off, Kids Carnival, and Vendor Fair will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cook-off will offer the opportunity to taste chili concocted by 20 different chefs. The competition will raise funds for a number of local organizations. Admission buttons, which are necessary to attend the contest, may be purchased at the Lititz Stauffers of Kissel Hill, Bomberger’s, Dosie Dough, and Aaron’s Books, as well as at the high school during the event. Only 1,500 admission buttons will be sold. The Kids Carnival will feature food, face painting, craft and coloring stations, inflatables, and a variety of games and competitions. Wristbands for unlimited play may be purchased at the event. There is no admission fee to attend the Vendor Fair, which will feature a number of local vendors and businesses showcasing their products and services. Readers who would like to learn more about the festival may visit http://lititzfireandice.com.

Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, can easily recall what she considers the most unusual ice sculpture from the 2018 Lititz Fire and Ice event. “Last year, the Listerine bottle (was the most unusual),” noted DeKarske. “It was 10 feet tall. Everyone wanted a photo with it.” For 2019, DeKarske is looking forward to a group of sculptures that will be carved in a barnyard theme. “This year, I am most excited about the tractor because you can actually get on it,” DeKarske said. “We will have farm animals with it that (allow people to) put (their faces) in a hole for a photo.” This year’s Lititz Fire and Ice, which is organized by Venture Lititz in partnership with the Lititz Lions and Leo clubs, will run from Friday, Feb. 15,
through Monday, Feb. 18, throughout downtown Lititz. Specific activities will be held on Feb. 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 16, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Portions of Main and Broad streets will be closed during these times. The event will include more than 50 ice sculptures spread around town, with interactive sculptures near the Lititz Post Office and the entrance to Lititz Springs Park. The ice sculptures will remain in place for visitors to see through Tuesday, Feb. 19. On Feb. 15, activities will kick off at 5 p.m. with the traditional Friday night block party. According to DeKarske, 40 small sculptures, including ones in the shapes of everything from birds to fish to business logos, will be set up around town. “At least a dozen large ones will be carved on-site,” said DeKarske, who continues to work with Ernie DiMartino of Jeannette to procure the sculptures. A large throne and smaller throne will both provide photo
