Rachel Barnhart, a crisis response counselor with ECHOS, has worked with more than 40 Elizabethtown Area School District students so far this school year.

Helping Teens In Crisis BY CATHY MOLITORIS

here is no doubt this past year has been challenging for everyone. It has been particularly hard on teens, said Rachel Barnhart. She knows firsthand what students have been facing because she’s been working with middle-schoolers and high-schoolers at Elizabethtown Area School District as a crisis response counselor since the school year began. She is employed by Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) but contracted through the district. “My job came into place because of the rise in crises in schools,” she noted. “School counselors couldn’t keep up with the numbers, and also their position really focuses on other things.” While school counselors may meet with students to go over class schedules and sometimes touch on emotional issues, that’s not their main job responsibility, she said. “When they see a student with suicidal ideation or homicidal ideation or conflict at home, I get

school year, she worked with 43 students, conducted 112 sessions and provided more than 70 hours of crisis counseling. “This year has been really tough for teens,” she said. “The pandemic has brought an increase in isolation, depression and anxiety.” Barnhart noted that her position is important not only because it serves students in need, but also because she can help keep students out of hospitals. “I get to reduce over-hospitalization, especially when it comes to conversations about suicidal ideation,” she explained. “I’m able to prevent this in the middle of a pandemic when hospitals are already being flooded for other reasons.” She said this position has taught her not only that there’s a need for her services, but also that students are stronger than she expected. “I’ve never been so impressed with teenagers and their resiliency and ability to adapt,” she remarked. “This has not in any way been an easy year, but they are doing it, and I’m proud of them. I’m honored to work with them and be a part of their journey.”

she said. “I’ll refer them to outpatient therapy or, if they need inpatient, I’ll refer them there. Then, I’m here to help them when they come back.” Hired in July, Barnhart has seen a steady increase in the number of students she’s working with. In the first four months of the 2020-21

brought in,” she explained. “I could get a referral from a school counselor or another student or a teacher or a family member.” Barnhart’s job is to serve as a resource between what the school offers and outpatient or inpatient therapy. “My job is not to replace outpatient therapy but to create stability for students at the time,”

W hen it comes to mental health, sharing stories can help reduce stigma, provide support and offer answers. That’s the hope behind a new blog launched on Mental Health America of Lancaster County’s website. The organization created its new website, https://mhalancaster.org, in November 2020, and it launched the blog in January. “A lot of our website is educationbased,” said Caryn Thompson, marketing coordinator for Mental Health America of Lancaster County. “What we’re trying to do with the blog is complement that with personal stories. As far as mental health goes, it’s a topic that’s not just about facts and figures. We can tell you all the stats in the world, but that is not always going to get our point across. Sometimes, the experience of other people educates just as much.” The blog is being written by inhouse writers, including Thompson, but will also be open to community submissions. Categories include

educational pieces from people including physicians and counselors, personal stories and a creative category. For this last category, Thompson emphasized that the blog could include a variety of submissions. “Not everybody connects with words,” she explained. “If somebody wants to send in art, like photography or paintings ... we’re OK with that, too.”

Thompson already has five or six submissions for the blog and said that anyone who is interested in contributing can get help to get started. “We have a list of topics if you’re not sure what to write about,” she stated. “ We can give you some prompt sentences to give you a boost as a way to start writing. You don’t have to keep going on that topic, but it might get your creative juices flowing.” Submissions will be vetted by the organization, and Thompson is hoping to post weekly to the blog. “When you have people out there in the world telling their personal stories, that helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health,” she remarked. “You can see that here is a human being who is living with this diagnosis, but she is still going to work, still feeding her family, still contributing to society. These personal stories can help other people learn what it’s like to live with anxiety or to be bipolar, for example.” Thompson said the blog has a personal connection because she’s the mother of a 20-year-old son who has bipolar disorder. She started writing about her experiences as a parent when he was in middle school, and her writing was shared with other parents. “I know that personal stories can help other people,” she stated. “And if personal stories are engaging, people are more likely to read the educational information on our website and more likely to want to learn more.” For more information about submitting material to the blog, readers may contact Thompson at cthomp son@mhalancaster.org.

School Helps Community Members East High Street Elementary School and Bear Creek School held their annual Giving Tree and food drive programs. This year, East High provided presents and food items for 38 families experiencing financial difficulty. Coordinated by the school’s counseling department and PTO, the Giving Tree allowed the school’s faculty, staff members, and PTO to give back to the community they work and live in

by purchasing gifts off a wish list supplied by the families in need of holiday assistance. Each year, the program provides individually wrapped gifts, such as hats, gloves, jackets, and toys, to children. The food collection encouraged students and staff to bring in nonperishable food items. District staff members delivered the food boxes before the school district’s winter recess. The baskets included an assortment of

soups, sauces, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, dessert mixes, and more. At Bear Creek, the Giving Tree and food drive benefited 28 local families experiencing financial difficulty. The goal was to ensure as many children and families as possible could wake up with presents under the tree and food on the table during the holiday season. In total, more than 70 students received gifts, and 115 people enjoyed a holiday

meal thanks to the students, faculty, staff, and PTO of the school. As part of the Elizabethtown Area School District’s Life Ready Model, students participate in altruistic projects to extend their learning beyond the school system’s walls. These experiences are meant to empower students to give back to their community and build the foundation to become productive adult citizens.

Friends In Action Intl. staff members gathered for a meeting in July 2018.

Headquartered in Middletown, Friends In Action Intl. has spent more than 25 years assisting missionaries in remote locations with infrastructure projects that help the Gospel reach indigenous people groups. The organization is seeking additional volunteer staff and other volunteers in multiple areas. Open positions include human resource director; communication assistant; missionary partners to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and West Africa; Spanish-speaking liaison to Bolivia work teams; work team leaders to Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and Bolivia; and full-time shipping personnel. Currently, FIA is at work in six countries on 10 projects. From water projects in West Africa and Vanuatu to hurricane-rebuilding efforts in Nicaragua and Vanuatu, FIA serves close to a quarter of a million people each year. In 2020, the organization provided construction assistance to over 1,200 people in Vanuatu and Nicaragua. In addition, the nonprofit sent medical or food/water provisions to close to 8,000 people from Bolivia, Moldova, West Africa, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu. More than 225,000 people had a chance to hear the Gospel, many of them for the first time, through the organization’s outreaches. Over 80% of FIA’s headquarters’ staff are volunteer or privately funded so more donated dollars can go directly to projects and indigenous villagers.

ET Swimmers Split With Ephrata, CV title. The Mountaineers claimed the meet and their second straight section title thanks to a 105-65 victory. Elizabethtown eased some of the sting of the loss by posting a 132-35 win over Conestoga Valley. Ben Azzalina enjoyed the lone event win for the Bears, claiming the 100-backstroke while adding a second place in the 50freestyle. Wyatt Rachael picked up his only top-three finish, taking second in the 100-breaststroke. E-town also collected four bronze finishes on the day with Sam Azzalina picking up two (50-freestyle and 100breaststroke). Nevin Rutherford

McDonald and Handshew to win the 200-medley relay and with Handshew, McDonald and Dabbs to claim the 200freestyle relay. Hall (100freestyle) and McDonald (100butterfly) picked up the final two solo wins. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The year of transition continues for the boy’s basketball team. With a new, first year, head coach and a team with just two seniors, the Bears sit at 2-4 on the season after a 72-45 setback to Conestoga Valley on January 29th. The Bears were outscored in all but the second quarter, where they drew even with the Buckskins, 13-13, making it a 28-21 game at the break. CV did the bulk of their damage after the break, outscoring E-town 23-10 in the third, pushing the deficit to 20 points. CV padded its cushion with a 21-14 fourth quarter run. Luke Pierson just missed game high honors with 21points, falling one point shy of CV’s Luke Rumbaugh. Techeal Gonquoi chipped in 10-points to give the Bears two double digit scorers but only two other Bears cracked the box score, Braden Cummings (eight points) and Dax Kelly (six points). After a few snow days, the boy’s traveled to Lebanon where they fell to the Cedars 41-32. Just two players reached double figures, Gonquoi for Elizabethtown and Marquis Ferreira for Lebanon, and they tied for game high honors with 10 points. Pierson added eight but it did not stop Lebanon from posting a slight scoring edge in all four quarters to hand E-town the loss. Walsh finished her day with a second-place finish in the 100-backstroke. Handshew fronted the thirdplace finishers for her work in the 50-freestyle and the 100backstroke while Gabi Dabbs (100-freestyle), Brooke Heisey (500-freestyle) and Madi Conway (100-breasstroke) rounded out the top three finishers. The swimming teams also took part in a standard issue dual meet opposite Cocalico on the 27th where the boy’s posted a 115-49 win while the Lady Bears celebrated a 12640 victory. The Lady Bears claimed all three relay events and posted top three sweeps in three individual events to aide their efforts. over Ephrata, winning seven of the 13 matches, all with bonus points, on their way to the win. Elizabethtown jumped out to a quick 24-0 lead thanks in large part to three Ephrata forfeits. Wyatt Mumma (113), Lauren Hoffman (120) and Nathan Thomas (126) enjoyed the forfeit wins while Austin Reitmeyer kicked off the run with a pin at 106. The Mountaineers claimed the next three matches but E-town was still up 24-12. Jake Rudy started another bonus point run with his 18-2 tech fall victory at 152. Bobby Walters (160) and Hayden Haver (172) stretched Elizabethtown’s lead to 41-12 with back-to-back pins. Ephrata cut into the lead with another three-match run to close out the night. RIFLE The rifle team took part in their third COVID induced double header on January 28th, dropping 494-486 and 870-868 decisions to Manheim Central to fall to 3-7 on the season. Emma Kreiser posted the top score in each match with double 99s. Emily Bonsall went 99-97 for the day, slotting her second on the team. Allison Lowell was the only other Bear to have both rounds make the top five, posting matching 96’s. Rachel Gerberich (97) and Nizaly OrtizKreiner (97) finished up the scoring five in the 494-486 loss. As they have with three of their other matches this year,

the Bears needed extra shooters to determine a winner in their second head-to-head with Central. Aivery Shuck (98) and Kyle Lloyd (97) completed the top five in the 870-868 loss. OrtizKreiner and Kate Kruft followed with a pair of 96s. Parker Bryant (95) and Gerberich (92) may have been the last of the nine shooters but their scores were needed on this day to determine a winner. BOWLING The bowling team picked up their fifth straight 7-0 win on January 29th, rolling by Ephrata. Alaina Telenko led the way with a 714 series. The Bears finished with four bowlers over the 600-pin count plateau with Daniel Eberle (658), Zach Deardorff (653) and Eryn Moore (628) joining Telenko. Zach Wentzel wasn’t far behind with his 581 series. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Despite not seeing action for a week and not completing a game for 22 days, the Lady Bear basketball team can still play. Need proof, how about a 58-37 win over Lebanon on February 3rd. Jade Love-Morris netted 14 of her game high 16 in the opening half, helping to push the home team to a 36-19 cushion at the break. Elise Hassinger picked up the final six of her 14 points during a 12-9 third quarter run that pushed the margin to 20 points before the Lady Bears backed off to coast to the 58-37 final.

asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blinged-out shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on multiple folding tables,” Celli said. “The gypsy gowns usually need two to three large crinoline petticoats and are highly embellished. I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donating hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and threedimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out, and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-by-one by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a laborintensive job, but the results are outstanding, eye-catching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! The Uncommon Crystal Couture World of Sondra Celli” includes insight into her career as well as directions for several embellishment projects. The common thread running through LASN’s programs this year is that of challenge. The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been

needed. Pint and quart containers will be available depending on family size, and there will be a two-quart maximum per vehicle to enable the church to bless more people. The purpose of the event is to share the love of Jesus. The church previously held a soup takeout event in January and gave away all 175 quarts of chicken corn noodle soup in 30 minutes. The church is planning for more attendees at the upcoming event. A free takeout ham dinner is being planned for Saturday, March 27. Reservations will be required, and details will be announced later.

Inspired by the national campaign Share the Stimulus, UWLC will facilitate donations to be given as a one-time gift to people who apply for assistance through www.uwlanc.org/stimulus. Readers may visit the aforementioned website to donate

all or part of their stimulus check. Those who make more than the stimulus threshold are also encouraged to give, as are organizations such as UWLC’s Catalyst Sponsors, including Lancaster County Community Foundation and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank which have each donated $10,000; M&T Bank which has contributed $7,500; and High Foundation which donated $5,000. In addition, Oaktree Outdoor

Advertising is pledging to assist in promoting the fund through free billboard support. Whether someone received a stimulus check or not, he or she can support neighbors who are struggling to cover expenses not eligible for targeted support. For example, a young mother can receive WIC to help purchase baby formula, but diapers are disqualified. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website.
