Ordinary people, extraordinary impact

You don’t need special skills to make a difference in the world. That’s what Friends in Action International (FIA) hopes people will discover about its ministry.

“I try to instill in people that we are just normal blue-collar people trying to serve with the talents God blessed us with,” said Andy Bachert, chief operations officer for the nonprofit. “I grew up thinking a missionary was someone old, retired, poor, that moved to the jungle in a faraway country and was never to be seen again.

That simply isn’t true.”

Instead, he noted, God called him into action when Bachert

make an impact on lives around the world,” he said. “We’re nothing special, and anyone can get involved.”

Concert to showcase the music of Johnny Cash

When Johnny Cash performed, audiences were treated to soulful tunes, heartfelt storytelling and stripped-down authenticity. If you missed your chance to see the Man in Black in action, you’re in luck.

Local musician Corty Byron will

perform a Johnny Cash concert at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. His performance on Friday, Feb. 21, will begin at 7 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit Threads and Treads, an annual event that raises money to purchase shoes and clothing for students in need in

Bachert may not see himself or others who work with FIA as special, but the organization’s impact around the world proves a different point.

Formed in 1992 by a few board members of the organization New Tribes Mission (called NTM then, but now known as Ethnos360), FIA - originally called Friends of NTM - came from a need to support missionaries who were being sent as Bible teachers, evangelists and church planters.

As the new pastor at The Encounter Church in Bainbridge, Scott Gibbs has a clear mission. “I want to try and help people connect to the one and only true living God through Jesus Christ,” he shared. “I want people to know there is a God, and He wants to know you.”

Scott’s wife, Fran, added, “We want to be God’s hands and feet to reach everybody in our community. God loves us all, and we want people to know that.”

Scott officially became the pastor of the church, located at 221 N. Front St., Bainbridge, in January. Scott, who is from New York state, graduated from Lancaster Bible College with a bachelor’s degree in Bible. He was ordained through Lancaster County Bible Church. Fran graduated from Pinebrook Junior College with a liberal arts degree in Bible and medical secretary. Fran is originally from Lancaster County, so the pair was excited to return to the areaafter living in Fulton County for

A musical step back in time

Take a step back in time and make plans to visit the second annual Antique Phonograph Demonstration and Show. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Colebrook, 58 Church Road, Manheim. It will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with demonstrations at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and a ragtime concert beginning at 3 p.m.

“The idea for the show came from our shared passion for the phonograph hobby and Nick’s talent for organizing events,” said Shawn Patrick, who is co-hosting the event with Nick Sieber. “We are also both members of the Antique Phonograph Society but had no local social outlet for members to get together to share their passion

for the hobby.” The pair hopes that holding events like this will increase interest in membership to the society and introduce the hobby to a new generation.

As Sieber explained, a phonograph is the instrument used to play back recorded sound inscribed on a record. “Most folks today are familiar with a 33 1/3 rpm record, whereas our hobby mainly focuses on the era of cylinder records and 78 rpm records,” he shared. “Cylinder record production largely ended by the late 1920s, whereas 78s remained popular into the early 1950s.”

Two renowned speakers - Chad Shapiro and Wyatt Markus - will present at the event.

“Chad is an incredibly knowledgeable collector and historian of Thomas Edison, who has amassed a collection of Edison artifacts that would make any museum envious,”

Patrick commented. “His interest in Edison also led to him collecting many items from the earliest days of electricity, including a world-class collection of early light bulbs going back to the 1870s.”

Shapiro will share his knowledge of Edison and his contributions to perfecting the earliest phonographs, Patrick said.

“He will also be demonstrating an extremely rare, original Thomas Edison Tinfoil phonograph,” Patrick remarked. “Guests will hear the first machine to ever reproduce the human voice. It was the birth of recorded sound as we know it today.”

Markus specializes in reproducers or soundboxes, and he has also mastered recording onto wax cylinder records the way it was done in the 1890s, Patrick shared. “Wyatt will be demonstrating his talent by making a live recording onto a wax cylinder record,” he noted. “This is something that is rarely seen by the general public and is a must-see for all who have an interest in early sound reproduction.”

The phonograph show will also feature a live concert by Miss Maybell and Charlie Judkins.

“Miss Maybell and Charlie Judkins have played key roles in preserving music from the ragtime era and are proudly undertaking a project to digitally perform and record songs that may have never been recorded when originally released,” Sieber said. “This is the first time some of these songs have ever been recorded since being published 120-plus years ago.”

Maybell sings and plays several string instruments, while Charlie plays piano.

Audiences can expect to hear songs ranging from early jazz, blues and ragtime to early country-style music.

Visitors to the phonograph show are encouraged to bring records, phonographs or related pieces to swap or sell. A “swap meet” area will be set up, and, prior to the event, people who are interested in reserving a space should call Sieber at 717-598-8421 or Patrick at 717-490-0241. Markus will sell blank cylinder records for people to make their own home recordings, and Bob Barnett of the Musical Box Society will have a table of information.

Coffee and pastries will be available for purchase throughout the day, and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will feature a sandwich, chips, a dessert and a drink. Complimentary fruit and vegetable platters will also be available. Food proceeds will be used to support future phonograph shows.

Both Patrick and Sieber are members of the Antique Phonograph Society, a worldwide organization of people with a common passion for the preservation of the medium.

They hope people will come out for a fun day focused on the past.

“We would encourage anyone who enjoys history to attend,” Patrick said. “You will see demonstrations that are rarely ever seen. ... You will be hearing history exactly the way people heard it from the 1870s to about 1930.”

Added Sieber, “We highly recommend this show to anyone in the community who is a history buff, jazz music enthusiast or someone who is simply looking for a unique way to spend a Saturday afternoon. ... We are an inviting group of collectors and are always happy to share our passion for antique phonographs and music with anyone interested.”

While admission to the event is free, donations are suggested to cover the cost of the ragtime concert. For more information, visit www.antiquephono.org.

Elizabethtown Area School District.

For Byron, Cash has been a lifelong musical inspiration. He credits his grandfather, former Elizabethtown Mayor Ken Reighard, with introducing him to the country singer.

Although he will be performing Cash’s music, Byron emphasizes that he’s not doing an impression of the musician.

“It’s me performing,” he said. “I don’t put on a wig and pretend to be Johnny Cash. It’s just me going through his material. Audiences are going to hear all the hits they want to hear. For people who are not as close to his material as I am, they are going to hear some good surprises, too. I like digging deep and finding lesser-known songs Johnny did.”

As a fan of Cash, Byron has enjoyed some unique opportunities to learn more about the musi -

cian. He has recorded in Sun Studio, the Memphis location where Cash and other notables, including Elvis Presley, also recorded. He even visited Folsom State Prison, where Cash famously performed and recorded in the late 1960s.

“I got to meet one of the guards who would have walked Johnny into that concert in 1968,” Byron recalled. “It was great to get a firsthand account of what Johnny was like and what that day was like.”

Byron, who is a member of Christ Church, said supporting an event like Threads and Treads is important to him.

“It’s such a good cause, and it directly impacts people in the community,” he said. “When you donate to Threads and Treads, you’re helping somebody right here where you live.”

Threads and Treads will be held on Saturday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last year’s event raised more than $3,000, said organizer Nadinne Ziegler. “We were able to help about 30 students with coats, hats, shoes and clothing,” she shared. Christ Church will collect for Threads and Treads during the month of February as well as at Byron’s concert.

Ziegler hopes people will come out again to support this year’s Threads and Treads, noting that the event will have some new features, including a cornhole tournament.

Byron invites everyone to his concert, adding that Cash provides a robust musical catalog to choose from.

“Johnny Cash has had such a long career of recorded material,” he said. “It starts in the mid-1950s, and he recorded until his death

in September of 2003. It’s hard to compare a career like that to anyone else.”

He hopes audiences will hear songs they know and love as well as some new ones, and he noted that the concert provides a way to connect to the past.

“If you’re a casual Johnny Cash fan, you’re going to love what you hear,” he said. “If you’re deeper into Johnny Cash’s music, chances are, I’ll throw something in there that will surprise you. Johnny Cash is an interesting type of musical figure that just doesn’t exist anymore. Having that long recorded legacy, his music allows us to feel closer to that generation that’s not around much anymore.”

Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be accepted. For more information, visit www .etownucc.org.

“These men saw a need to support those going by means of construction and indigenous skills training,” Bachert shared, noting the organization hopes the work of its volunteers can help missionaries focus on teaching.

The organization’s goal was to build relationships with the people who are being ministered to, and in 2000, Friends of NTM changed its name to Friends in Action International and separated into its own 501(c)(3).

The business has its headquarters in Middletown, but its mailing address is in Elizabethtown, and the organization is well connected to the Elizabethtown area. It is a member of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce and works with multiple Elizabethtown churches.

FIA supports missionaries and mission organizations in locations with limited infrastructure, using construction projects and service to bring the Gospel to people who have not heard it.

“We go to some of the hard-toreach places with short-term volunteer teams who help construct and teach trade skills,” Bachert stated. “At our warehouse in Middletown, we also provide missionaries and mission organizations our international shipping services. From packages to crates, the whole way up to sea containers, we ship worldwide those much-needed supplies for missionaries and those they serve.”

Although FIA has a few missionaries stationed around the world, the organization also serves other organizations and solo missionaries that align with its mission and purpose, Bachert relayed.

Like many nonprofits, FIA is always in need of people who want to serve.

“Our volunteers can help with administrative tasks here at our headquarters. They can help pack a container or build wooden shipping crates,” Bachert remarked. “We have a volunteer grounds crew that mows and landscapes, keeping our headquarters looking nice.”

Volunteers can also serve on oneor two-week mission trips.

And, he emphasized, the organization will match people’s skills with the work they will do on the trips.

“God didn’t bless me as an evangelist or preacher, but he has skilled me in multiple trades,” he said. “The work I do to contribute to projects is just as valuable as the missionaries’ work sharing the Gospel. Knowing I can use construction skills to help support Gospel work is exciting! Even working here at our headquarters is all support of accelerating the Gospel work of missions. It all ties together.”

FIA can also use financial support as donations are key in seeing projects to completion.

“The majority of our staff and

support people are self-supported missionaries,” he said, explaining that they raise support for their salary. “This keeps our overhead costs low, allowing more donations to go directly to projects.”

He hopes people will take a leap of faith and consider serving with FIA.

“I like to tell people, ‘Go out with us one time. That’s all it will take to get hooked,’” he said. “Our volunteer return rate is approximately 90%, meaning once they go, they go again at least once if not multiple times.”

12 years - to head up the growing Encounter Church.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and we had been looking for this opportunity for a few years,” Scott shared. “We came here and interviewed, and we just felt the Spirit

of God with us. We are excited to hop on board and see what the Lord does.”

For Fran, the church’s outlook fits perfectly with the couple’s viewpoints.

“We feel it’s a prayerful church, and we are prayer warriors,” she

said. “We agree with the vision to reach the lost and to disciple those who do know Jesus.”

The biggest challenge facing the couple is the lack of a church building. The Encounter Church is currently meeting in a converted warehouse, but Scott and Fran would like to grow the congregation and look for a bigger, more permanent home.

“We are in a very nice facility, but the church needs to grow,” Fran said. “We want to attract families and people who are looking to see God in their lives. We are on a faith journey to grow the church and to connect with more people.”

The Encounter Church is an independent, nondenominational church. Sunday services are held at 10 a.m., preceded by prayer time at 9:30 a.m. Men’s and women’s groups are held throughout the month, as well as an evening prayer meeting and youth group on Wednesdays.

“We are a Bible preaching church,” Scott said. “We preach the entirety of God’s Word.”

Scott noted that being a smaller church provides a unique opportunity.

“We have the capability to connect and love a lot quicker,” he said. “There’s a closeness and collectiveness here. We are a very welcoming church.”

Scott and Fran are the parents of two sons. They have nine grandchildren.

“We consider this our greatest accomplishment, to pass our legacy of faith to our children and grandchildren,” Scott said.

He and Fran hope anyone seeking to experience a new church will come to The Encounter Church.

“We desire to find like-minded individuals … brothers and sisters in Christ, who desire to be equipped and grow spiritually, and to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus to go into all the world and make disciples,” Scott said. “So, if you are looking for solid biblical preaching, want to learn more about God/Jesus … come visit us at The Encounter. We can build a legacy of faith in Jesus together.”

The couple has a mission of taking God’s Word and applying it to today’s world, Fran shared. “We pray as a body, and if you don’t know how to pray, we teach you to pray,” she said. “We want to help people get to know God and walk with Him in a relationship. We want people to continue to grow in that relationship.”
