EAHS Mini-THON To Benefit Local Cancer Patients Community Invited To Participate By Francine Fulton

Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will hold its annual Mini-THON, a 12hour version of Penn State’s THON, on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9. During the event, starting at 7 p.m. on March 8, student dancers will stay up all night until the amount of funds raised during the event is announced at 7 a.m. on March 9. The slogan for this year is “One Small Step For Etown, One Giant Leap For A Cure.” All proceeds will benefit Four Diamonds, an organization that provides assistance to children treated at Penn State Children’s Hospital and their families by providing support services and covering medical expenses related to cancer

care that are not covered by insurance. In addition, funds raised go to research and finding a cure for pediatric cancer. The community is invited to patriciate in the event by taking part in the Mini-THON during community hours from 8 to 11 p.m. on March 8 for a small donation. Children age 6 and under will be admitted for free. “Any students and community members can attend,” noted EAHS teacher Kevin Goss, who co-advises the EAHS Mini-THON Committee. “We will have special events like at talent show and games and a bouncy house. We will have local kids and families who are (from) Four Diamonds come and share their stories during the community hours.” Like the Penn State THON participants, EAHS students are not permitted to sit down at any time during the 12 hours, so activities are planned to keep them up and moving, such as a See Mini-THON pg 2

At the conclusion of last year’s Mini-THON at Elizabethtown Area High School, it was revealed that the fundraiser netted more than $85,000 for the Four Diamonds charity. This year’s event will take place on March 8 and 9.

Susquehanna Stage To Debut Students Qualify For National At New Arts Center We The People Competition By Dayna M. Reidenouer

In a twist of irony, Susquehanna Stage’s first production in its new, permanent space at the Marietta Center for the Arts, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, takes place in a rented room. “Plaza Suite,” a comedy by Neil Simon, features four couples in three acts, each during their time in Suite 719 at New York City’s Plaza Hotel. “The last 10 years we had been in a rented space,” said Susquehanna Stage artistic director Jim Johnson. “ We wanted our own space.” The play will be performed on the Gallery Stage of the new venue, which originally served as a house of worship. Susquehanna Stage will present Neil Simon’s comedic play “Plaza Suite” at the new Marietta Center for the Arts on two weekends this month.

dodge ball tournament and line dancing. “They stand the whole night to show their support for families fighting through their tough battle with cancer,” Goss said, adding that participants are also treated to food and beverages donated by local businesses. A lantern ceremony will take place following the community hours. People can purchase luminarias in honor of or in memory of someone who has fought cancer or is currently fighting cancer. “ We will all come to the lobby and the names will be read of everyone (being remembered) and there will be a special music presentation and moments of silence,” Goss noted. At 7 a.m. on March 9, students will finally be permitted to sit down as the total amount of money raised is revealed. “Then everyone celebrates,” Goss noted. Between 150 and 175 EAHS students help organize and run the Mini-THON. Seniors Allyson DeBerry, Marena Lonardi and Sami Shutt are cochairs of this year’s committee. “It’s become a really big thing here at Etown. We had the first one in 2011 and we might have had 75 kids (attend),” Goss pointed out. “Typically, we now have 300 students who sign up to dance.” The event is promoted throughout the school year. “In mid-November we have a kickoff assembly. We remind (the students) about the mission of Four Diamonds,” Goss stated. “From the beginning of the school year up to the night of Mini-THON, we have various fundraisers. We’ve done an ice skating night, a painting night, restaurant fundraisers and a Valentine’s baby-sitting service that we advertised through the elementary and middle schools.” Mini-THON is especially beloved by Elizabethtown because its inspiration came from Elizabethtown Area Middle School student Chris Millard, who was diagnosed with cancer. While battling cancer, he wrote a story about a brave knight who has to win a battle using the four qualities of courage, wisdom, strength and honesty to help him overcome the evil sorceress. After Chris lost his battle with cancer, the Millard family created the Four Diamonds charity. Last year, EAHS exceeded its goal of raising $85,000. This year’s fundraising goal for EAHS has increased from $85,000 to $90,000. “We are pretty close to our cumulative total of bringing in a half-million dollars,” Goss said. For more information, readers may visit www.etown schools.org/elizabethtownhs, contact Goss at kevin_goss @etownschools.org or visit www.facebook.com/ EAHSMiniTHON.

LMS, Kraybill Announce Agreement After 12 years of recent shared ownership, Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) and Kraybill Mennonite School have announced a new beginning. Both parties signed an agreement on Nov. 9, 2018, stating that Kraybill Mennonite School will become fully independent again beginning on Monday, July 1, 2019. Kraybill Mennonite and LMS have a 40-year history of working together, at points independently and at other times jointly. Kraybill Mennonite School sought independent status in March 2018 after LMS shared

the need to combine grade levels or close the campus due to decreased enrollment. The Kraybill community united in support of continued operation of the school and its mission. Desiring a Mennonite school in the Mount Joy area to continue, LMS agreed to another year in partnership, culminating with fully independent status for Kraybill for the 2019-20 academic year. “Lancaster Mennonite is pleased to see the Kraybill community rally to ensure Mennonite education continues in Mount Joy,” said Pam Tieszen, LMS superintendent. “It is

clear that the transition team is as dedicated as LMS to see our mission continue. It is only with renewed community and family support that our schools are able to effectively (serve) students.” Kraybill Mennonite School continues to offer faith-integrated academic programs, and it has announced a decrease in its tuition rate, according to Kraybill school board chair Mark Graybill. He added, “Course offerings have been strengthened and changes have prompted a strong enrollment response.”

Thus, it seemed fitting to Martin that she organize a forum during which individuals and organizations can engage in conversation about trails, whether they be used by hikers, birders, equestrians, cyclists, or others. “The (Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee) focuses on all trails,” Martin said. “The forum is for all users, not just folks who sit on boards. It’s exciting to see the interest come from all levels.” Representatives of DCNR are slated to attend, as are representatives from Keystone Trails Association, Mason-Dixon Trail System, Northwest River Trail, Rail Trail Advisory Committee,

and Susquehanna Heritage. These folks want to hear what trail users have to say, and they will help to facilitate small group discussions on a range of topics. Martin suggested that the topics will include the management, rehabilitation, and maintenance of existing trails; the planning, construction, and management of new trails; access to trails and the use of public lands; funding trails at the municipal, county, and state levels; public-private partnerships and community outreach; and partnerships and collaboration among conservation, service, and trail organizations. “To enhance the experience of users takes planning,” Martin pointed out. “The (goal) of the forum is to help (organizations) make good decisions about trails in the future.” Martin envisions the forum as a mix of casual interaction and focused discussion. Attendees will move from table to table for the small group discussions. “It should be fun and engaging,” Martin said. “We’re all coming together for our love and passion for trails.” If the event is successful, Martin said she hopes to host a follow-up forum so the public can learn about the results of the March 16 forum and hear about how the results have impacted trail development and management. There is no cost to attend the forum, although donations will be accepted. Light refreshments will be provided. Weather permitting, folks may stay after the forum to hike the Northwest River Trail. Seating at the forum is limited to 60 people. To reserve a seat, folks should register at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “PA Trails Advisory Committee & Partners Public Trail Forum.” For more information about the event, readers may contact Martin at 717-392-7891, ext. 215, or lmartin@lancaster conservancy.org.

We The People from pg 1 the Elizabethtown team will join the other 49 states’ winning teams in simulated congressional hearings on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The United States Congress will provide rooms on Capitol Hill to the top 10 teams on the third day of competition

to express its support for this civic exercise. At the national event, students will prepare and deliver brief opening statements on constitutional questions, and community scholars, such as professors, federal judges, and attorneys, will respond to the opening statements with follow-up questions. The competition judges will probe the students’ knowledge of the Constitution and the

Bill of Rights as the students defend their positions. The Elizabethtown team consists of 15 students in James Sostack’s Advanced Placement Government class. Students will devote time in evenings and on weekends to learning constitutional principles and practices. They will also develop team-building strategies as they work together in small groups when drafting the

required responses to prepare for the national competition. The students must raise $21,000 to cover the cost of the trip to Washington. While student contributions and district donations have subsidized some of the overall costs, funds are still needed. Donations are being accepted. Marietta Center of the Arts, the umbrella organization under which Susquehanna Stage operates, purchased the building in August 2018. Guests attending “Plaza Suite” and the other five shows planned this year may park at the rear of the building and on the streets around it. Due to the age of the building, the facility is not handicapped-accessible. Folks with special needs are invited to contact the box office at 717-426-1277 or tmoore@susquehannastageco.com, and the theater staff will make every effort to provide accommodations. “Plaza Suite” will open on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Additional evening performances will be offered at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21; Friday, Feb. 22; and Saturdays, Feb. 16 and 23. Matinees will begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 17 and 24. The theme of the production is couples and relationships, Johnson said. The three stories are connected only through the theme and the setting. There is a married couple whose anniversary celebration is interrupted by work and an attractive secretary; a Hollywood producer attempting to seduce his high school sweetheart, who makes the

rendezvous while her three children are in school; and two parents reasoning with their daughter, who has locked herself in the restroom to avoid her groom and their wedding. “Every other response is a laugh line,” commented Joel Persing of Brogue, who plays the father of the bride. “It’s a very funny show. I’m partial to the third act,” he said with a laugh. “There are some tragic roles. The challenge is in making it funny,” noted Kyle Dunbar of Mount Joy. He is the only actor who will appear in all three scenes, with varying roles as bellhop, waiter, and groom. Dunbar is embracing that challenge, along with those associated with making a stage debut. His only previous interaction with theater was in taking a Fundamentals of Acting class as a freshman at Donegal High School. “I have learned something new every time (we rehearse),” Dunbar remarked. “I’m thankful for having an awesome director and cast.” The positive reputation of Susquehanna Stage is renowned throughout the area, attracting audiences and actors from quite a distance. “ We have hobbies that

demand you go where you can get a part,” added Persing, whose commute from York County is more than a half-hour. Reading native Mikaela Krall, who plays the high school sweetheart, travels from Annville, where she is a student at Lebanon Valley College. Veteran actor Ron Nason makes the drive from Mechanicsburg to portray a workaholic husband. Like Persing and Krall, Nason is appearing with Susquehanna Stage for the first time. “I have seen productions here, and I recently retired, so I have more flexibility,” Nason said. “You go where the roles are.” “The community theater circuit in central Pennsylvania is tight,” said Niki Boyer Swatski of Marietta, who is the other half of the anniversary couple. “We borrow actors, as well as sets and costumes.” Other cast members who will appear in “Plaza Suite” are Chrissy Nickel, Wes Madara, and Georgie Reardon. Readers who would like to watch these folks in action may purchase tickets at http://susquehannastageco.com/ index.php/box-office or at the door before each performance. Separate prices have been set for adults and students in orchestra and balcony seating.

The Susquehanna Chorale recently released a studio recording featuring repertoire from its spring 2018 concert series, titled “Roots & Wings.” The Susquehanna Chorale, founded in 1981 by conductor Linda L. Tedford, is a nationally recognized adult chamber ensemble of 35 singers chosen by audition. “Roots & Wings” celebrates the breadth of human experience and how relationships that are rooted in faith, family, and friendship may inspire people to achieve their dreams.

Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine,” American spirituals, and Rhonda Sandberg’s modern arrangement of Bach’s “Come, Sweet Death” pay tribute to the historical roots of faith. The enduring roots of human relationships are the focus of “Jenny Rebecca,” Bob Chilcott’s setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem “Remember Me,” and Eriks E∫envald’s “Only in Sleep,” based on Sara Teasdale’s poem about childhood friends returning in her dreams. The roots of the United States’ musical heritage are honored

with songs from early America, including “Nelly Bly” and a men’s arrangement of “Aura Lee” as well as Copland’s “Long Time Ago” and “I Bought Me a Cat.” The program also includes Sean Kirchner’s “Unclouded Day.” “Roots & Wings” is the chorale’s eighth nationally distributed recording. Three of the chorale’s recordings were considered for Grammy nomination. “Roots & Wings” is available for purchase by calling 717-533-7859 or visiting www.susquehannachorale.org.

a part-time medical position for 24 months, along with purchasing materials to expand the CPR program, which is a family safety initiative A Woman’s Concern provides. Offering services in both Spanish and English has been an important goal for the organization. One paid and one volunteer staff member are bilingual, and Kline has reworked the website, www.pregnancylancaster.com, to include basic information in Spanish as well as English. Of course, more space means more opportunity to offer clients medical services as well. A room to conduct ultrasounds and space for client advocates, along with meeting and business space and offices, were all made possible by the larger, new facility. According to Hartman, the nonprofit has been available to local women facing unplanned pregnancies since 1972, when it opened as Birthright. As A Woman’s Concern outgrew its Duke Street location, an East Chestnut Street facility was opened, but in July 2017, Harvest Bible Chapel offered its administrative offices, including two buildings on Millersville Pike to the organization. A

successful 2018 capital campaign provided funds to renovate the main building. A grant from the High Foundation will help remodel the carriage house, called Hope House, which is located behind the building, for meetings and classes. Hope House also offers large items that clients may need, such as cribs and strollers. A boutique for smaller items is found in the front foyer of the main building. Hartman explained that as a “hand-up” organization, A Woman’s Concern allows clients to work with client advocates and receive points, which they can redeem for items they need for their babies. “Many of the items come from (area) church (members) who hold baby showers (for us),” explained Hartman. “ We have a wish list on our website.” The baby items are one more way A Woman’s Concern aims to create a welcoming and positive atmosphere for clients. “What we give here is knowledge and empowerment and love and compassion,” said Hartman. “ A Woman’s Concern will hold its annual banquet featuring Dr. Ron Archer at Calvary

whole day or weekend on chores. Wipe down the shower after each use to avoid the build-up of mold and mildew. Dust surfaces in the closet regularly to keep items and clothes clean longer, and wipe kitchen surfaces while cooking. Regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping a home tidy and ready for spurof-the-moment gatherings. Second, avoid shopping on weekends. People who work a typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule often do their shopping on weekends because that is when they have the most time on their hands. But since that is true for most people, long lines

and crowded spaces can be expected when shopping on weekends. People are encouraged to try to carve out some time on a weekday evening, especially a Monday or Tuesday, to free up precious weekend time and avoid long lines. Third, simplify meal prep. Eating healthy, nutritious food does not need to be sacrificed when pressed for time. Instead, look for low- or no-prep meal options at the grocery store that can serve as a standalone meal or as a base with a protein option. Time-Saving Suggestions Posted Whether it is to spend more time exploring the great outdoors or enjoying the company of family and friends, everyone wants to find more time in their busy schedules to do the things they love. While work at home and at the office always seems to be beckoning, no one wants to be tied down by housework and/or a to-do list. Though it is impossible to add more minutes to the day, several tips can help people save time. First, people should clean as they go. W hen it comes to keeping a home clean and organized, it pays to do a little bit at a time rather than spend a

A Christmas postcard sent out by A Woman’s Concern shows a photo of double purple doors decorated with holiday wreaths and an “open” sign. “Our purple doors mean ‘love, compassion, and support,’” said Jill Hartman, executive director of A Woman’s Concern, which relocated from Duke Street in Lancaster city to 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, in July 2018. “We painted the doors purple so our clients could find us.” These clients are the more than 600 women who benefit from A Woman’s Concern services each year. Those services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and education on healthy relationships, pregnancy, parenting, and more. “We create a loving, compassionate, nonjudgmental environment for clients, so they get all the support they need,” explained Hartman. The move nearly quadrupled the space that A Woman’s Concern could utilize, and staff and volunteers are planning to offer more services in the future by partnering and collaborating with other community organizations. Among those services are a program called Redefined, which will aid in healing for women, and a fatherhood mentoring program called The Fatherhood Journey. Matthew Neff of Family of Restoration Ministries has already run a fatherhood workshop, and Neff will soon become the first volunteer male client advocate for A Woman’s Concern. “I think that will make a huge difference in reaching the boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands,” added Laura Kline, marketing and communications director. Other services that the organization will offer will include working with a local market to provide dietitians to teach prenatal and postnatal nutrition to clients. In addition, a volunteer will help the organization expand lactation services, and the Knights of Columbus has funded

ET Swimmers Cap Seasons With Winning Records by Eric Pyles

The goal for most high school sports teams is to finish the regular season with a winning record and both of Elizabethtown’s swimming teams did just that. With a 127-39 win over Manheim Central on February 4, the boy’s team finished 6-5 while a 119-43 victory for the Lady Bears pushed their record to 8-3 on the season. “I’m really proud of the way our team finished this season,” said head coach Chad Houck, “It was really a great season for both squads, and I see a lot of potential for the future, especially on the girls’ side. It was

also really great to send our senior class off like that. They were all freshman when I started coaching, so this was a particularly emotional senior night for me.” The boy’s team cruised to their victory behind 11 wins in 11 events starting with the 200-medley relay. Ben Azzalina, Stuart Readinger, Kyle Welch and Jared Cochran posted 1:56.30, topping Central’s squad by 10 seconds. Welch, Readinger and Azzalina also took part in the 200freestyle relay with Riley Runnels taking the fourth spot to help post a winning 1:41.39. Azzalina picked up his third relay win by teaming with Runnels, Chase Shelly and his

brother Sam for a 3:42.26 in the 400-freestyle relay. Ben Azzalina’s final win came with a 50.35 in the 100 freestyle. Andrew Donahue was the lone Bear to nab two solo wins, taking the 100-backstroke and the 200-individual medley. Welch and Stuart Readinger managed one solo win each with Readinger taking the 50 freestyle and Welch the 100-butterfly. Ethan Hall, Reece Readinger and Wyatt Rachael picked up the final three Elizabethtown wins on the day. Hall claimed the 200freestyle (2:09.70), Readinger the 500 freestyle (5:51.55) and Rachael the 100-breaststroke (1:12.83). The Lady Bears nearly pulled off

the same first place sweep with only a Central win in the 50-freestyle standing in the way. Lexi Fink was the lone multiple event winner, taking the 100-breaststroke (1:15.9) and the 200-individual medley (2:31.66). Fink also helped kick off the meet on the right foot by joining forces with Gabby Walsh, Mackenzie Batche and Katie Locker to win the 200-medley relay in 2:25.48. Locker, Walsh and Batche also accounted for a combined three solo wins starting with Locker’s 100 freestyle win. Walsh took the 100backstroke (1:04.59) while Batche claimed the 100-butterfly (1:13.12). Gabi Dabbs also earned two wins, taking the 500 freestyle after helping win

Camille Donahue, Megan Handshew and Sierra Kapcsos swam the other three legs of the relay while Dabbs and Kapcsos joined forces with Rachel Handshew and Emily Kriner for a win in the 400freestyle relay. Abby Alsbaugh also turned in a 2:22.53 to win the 200 freestyle. BOWLING The bowling team capped another stellar season with back-to-back 7-0 wins over Conestoga Valley and Lebanon. Head coach Frank Telenko went with six keglers to top CV on February 1st with Patrick Hoffmaster just missing a perfect game on his way to a 729 series. The near miss came in the third game where Hoffmaster finished with a 299. Bradly Ruth rolled games of 222, 173 and 257 for his 652 series while Katelyn Garman also topped the 600-pin threshold with games of 147, 246 and 218. Abby Chaffins was the final Bear to bowl all three games, posting a 526 series. Elizabeth Vuxta filled the final spot for the first two games, posting scores of 178 and 179 while Eryn Moore added a 192 in the third game. A few days later Elizabethtown had little trouble with Lebanon, allowing Telenko to use 10 different bowlers. He went with Garman (214), Ruth (217), Vuxta (219), Hoffmaster (181) and Chaffins (165) in game one for an easy 996-823 win. Game two ended with E-town on top 1048-950 thanks to the work of Ruth (213), Hoffmaster (204), Gabe Berrier (231), Ben Davis (201) and Andrew Telenko (199). Garman (218), Vuxta (170) and Chaffins (191) returned for a 965-673 win in game three with help from Moore (203) and Alaina Telenko (183). RIFLE The rifle team is barreling toward the end of their season, knocking out their final three regular season matches as well as the L-L Pairs Tournament. All that remains for the Bears is the season ending L-L Individuals. As for what already took place, E-town surprisingly dropped their February 6th contest with Garden Spot, knocking the Bears out of their first-place tie with Manheim Township. The 491-490 loss, to a Spartan team that finished 2-12, dropped Eliz-

abethtown into second place in the LL standings. Matthew Risbon posted the team’s high score for the day with a 99. Taylor Chapman, Erin Weaver and Arabella Albino followed with a trio of 98s while Aaron Tetkoskie rounded out the scoring five with a 97. E-town managed to bounce back from the loss one day later, capping an 11-3 season that set a program mark for wins, with a 497-494 result over Manheim Central. Albino and Tetkoskie posted two of the three perfect scores for the day. Chapman, Risbon and Cole Ginder all finished with 99s, helping E-town close out the win. Elizabethtown picked up another win on February 5th, topping Wilson 494-486. Risbon posted the day’s lone perfect score with Evan Kready and Jagger Gilleland checking in just off that pace. Albino and Ginder finished out the top five with matching scores of 98. Elizabethtown, along with every other Lancaster Lebanon League Rifle team, descended on Palmyra’s Sportsmen Club February 2nd for the L-L’s annual Pairs Tournament. The Bears managed to get three different pairs in the top 10 of the 28 team ‘A’ bracket with the duo of Risbon and Ginder serving as the high point. The senior/sophomore combo was one of four pairs to post a score of 394 but finished 7th with a combined 30 centers. Risbon’s 198 and 17 centers checked in as team highs for the day while Ginder collected the remaining 13 centers on his way to a 196. Tetkoskie and Gilleland, slotted one spot behind their teammates, fell one short in the center count. E-town’s second pair collected a combined 29 centers with 17 going to Gilleland as he worked his way to a 198. Tetkoskie had the remaining 12 centers with a score of 196. Elizabethtown’s third top 10 pair, Chapman and Kready, finished with the same 394 and 26 centers as Garden Spot’s Tate Myers and Karlee Hartman but finished 10th after the tiebreakers were sorted out. Both Chapman and Kready posted the same 197 but Chapman held the edge in centers, 15-11. See Bears pg 14

Lady Chargers Take Harrisburg Christian to OT by Leah Sintic

Having already suffered a team setback due to injury to their point guard, the Lady Chargers were dealt another two blows this week, experiencing losses to both Harrisburg Christian and Covenant Christian. Last Monday, the team squared off against the Harrisburg Christian Knights, working their way into a first half lead of 15-11, before the Knights flipped the script and claimed the second half by the exact same differential, propelling the game into overtime knotted up at 26. Harrisburg came out strong in the extended minutes, outshooting the

Chargers 8-2 and taking the contest. Haley Witmer’s 10 points led the Charger offense, supplemented by seven from Naomi Ewing and five from Julia Martin. Several freshman players were called upon to make contributions with Marlie Niedwick pulling down five rebounds, snatching five steals, and dishing two assists. Elena Hatfield got in on the scoring action with a field goal. “The freshman in particular have really stepped up in their roles and have been playing some pretty significant minutes in recent games,” acknowledged head coach Phil Ferrari. “I’ve told all of the freshman

that we expect them to step in at a moment’s notice and contribute just as if the starters were still playing.” Twenty-four hours later, the MC team succumbed to Covenant Christian by a similar score of 38-28. The Chargers outscored Covenant 8-7 in the second period and matched them point-for-point in the fourth, but the Falcons built enough of an advantage in the first and third to claim the 10-point victory. “We learned from both losses,” noted Ferrari. “We didn’t execute enough down the stretch and saw the importance of playing four quarters of consistent basketball.” The double dose of defeat puts the Lady Chargers conference record at an even 6-6 and overall record of 9-10, leaving them in a state of flux for a District playoff berth, having to wait to see how other teams conclude their season run to learn their final ranking.

Though facing some tough obstacles in the latter half of the season, character growth and team-mentality are still on display as the team makes this journey together, with that example set by veteran players. “I continue to be impressed with our captains who are always working hard to go above and beyond, both on and off the court,” credited Ferrari. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Charger boys’ basketball blazed their way through two final CCAC competitors, picking up another two wins to wrap up their regular season conference record at a flawless 12-0. “Hustle, humble, and hardworking” has been the mantra the team has been attempting to put into practice both on and off the court. “We talk about what kind of team we want to be, and we cannot just say that’s what we are-but we must actually show it,” emphasized head coach Kory Pruner.

The back-to-back wins began on Monday with a home court victory over Harrisburg Christian, 77-30. “We are seeing an increase in the number of passes per possession, which has an impact on how well we shoot and how efficient we are,” noted Pruner.

The evening was also an opportunity to honor the contributions of the teams’ one senior member, Tyler Masters. Masters, a student of MCCS since kindergarten, has been involved in Media, Athletic Council, and Student Council in addition to his years See Chargers pg 14

Having had the opportunity to coach Masters from the JV level all the way through his senior year, Pruner took a moment to point out the senior’s strengths and contributions over his high school career. “His speed and sheer determination to get the ball have made him one of the best defenders I have ever coached,” elaborated Pruner. “His energy, effort, and hustle rubs off on his teammates, and will be his legacy as we look back on his career.” Fittingly, Masters had a big night for the Chargers, netting 15 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and three assists. The sophomores also had an impressive showing, demonstrating the building of future Charger potential. Hunter Stewart put in a dozen points, followed by eight apiece from Damian Rutt, Leighland Olson, and Evan Barnes. The following evening, the Chargers took down Covenant Christian by a margin of 59-27, rocketing out to an opening run of 16 unanswered points to begin the night.

but back-to-back losses to Hempfield and Lebanon caused a lot of head scratching in Elizabethtown. The 61-58 loss to the Black Knights happened on February 1 with the Bears second half rally falling just short. E-town’s rally was needed because Hempfield used the home crowd to carry a 35-22 lead into the break. The Bears chipped six points off that deficit with a 16-10 third quarter run leaving their 20-16 fourth quarter pace just short. Larry Locker inched closed to the top of the boy’s all-time scoring list with a team high 19 points. Amos Kollie and Ryan Parise both registered 12point games. Elizabethtown’s stumble continued on Feb. 4 with a 67-49 loss to Lebanon that dampened Locker, giving the program a new scoring leader for the first time in 48 years. The senior finished with a game high 19 points, putting his temporary total at 1099 or 12 points more than the previous record holder, Terry Parks, had in his career. With the loss fresh on his mind, Locker wasn’t overly excited for his new record, “It is a cool feeling, but it stinks because we lost and that’s the end of the day. We wanted to get the win, but I get that it will feel great in the future.” As for the team part of the game, Lebanon controlled nearly from the tip. “I’m disappointed in the way we performed. Give all the credit in the world to Lebanon, they hit a bunch of shots and they beat us,” said head coach Rocky Parise. The Cedars held E-town to just nine points in each of the first three quarters, allowing the home squad to build a 45-27 lead heading into the final frame. The Bears managed to cut the lead to single digits for a bit in the fourth but the Cedars regained control to pull away. Elijah Eberly was the only other Bear in double digits with 12 points. Elizabethtown closed out the season on a good note, defeating Ephrata 70-47 on February 5. Behind Locker’s 29 points and Eberly’s 17, the Bears controlled from the opening whistle. They held a 14-6 lead after one and were up 3016 at the midway point. Add in a 40-31 second half edge and you get the 70-47 final.

Aidan Masters was the night’s leading scorer with 14 points, shooting 86 percent from the field, and adding six steals and five assists to his resume. Jack Hilsher supplied another 11 points to the triumph. “We have been encouraging our guys to use the last few games as a way to build momentum as we prepare to play tougher competition and in more high-stakes situations,” explained Pruner as his team turns their attention to playoffs. Thursday, the Chargers extended their win streak with a 39-31 win over York Country Day, and while the victory does not affect conference standings, it will have post-season ramifications in

determining District III playoff rankings. Brothers T. Masters and A. Masters combined for 24 of the Chargers point tally, with T. Masters going 4-for-4 at the line. Stewart’s seven points combined with defensive intensity was another major factor in the low scoring triumph. Up next, the Chargers will enter the Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference playoffs as the number one seed in the West division of the CCAC. Their unmarred record earned them a first round bye, giving them a few days to prepare for the semi-final round to be held on February 14.

Students Receive Recognition Seven Elizabethtown Area School District students were recently recognized as Do the Right Thing recipients. Ashton Aipa, a seventh-grade student at Elizabethtown Area Middle School (EAMS), was recognized for helping a classmate collect a dropped binder and papers. Fallon Amick, a first-grade student at Rheems Elementary, was honored for collecting donations for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) in lieu of birthday presents. Rheems third-graders Gavin Bush and Quinn Dugan received recognition for encouraging their peers. Hannah Fitzwater, an Elizabethtown Area High School senior, was honored for calming younger students during the November snow storm, when bus transportation was delayed. Gwyneth Slade, a third-grade student at Bainbridge Elementary, was recognized for participating in a hurricane relief trip to Wilmington, N.C. Kierstan Swanger, a third-grade student at Bainbridge, received recognition for befriending a classmate who was sitting alone at lunch. The students’ good deeds were acknowledged at ceremonies held recently at their respective schools, where they received a certificate of recognition, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, and a gift certificate. Do the Right Thing is a national program that is offered locally as a collaborative effort between Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), the Elizabethtown local police departments, and the Elizabethtown Area School District. The program seeks to recognize students in the community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or outstanding efforts, and it emphasizes random acts of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a student. A volunteer committee reviews nominations and selects a winner or winners for each month. Nomination forms are available at www.eactc.org.
