The Business Of Baking

Friday mornings are particularly sweet at Elizabethtown Area High School. That’s the day the E-town Bakers deliver their homemade muffins to teachers and staff throughout the building.

The E-town Bakers are members of Rebecca Booth’s Life Skills class at the high school. For 10 years, Booth has been guiding students in running the business, which not only offers breakfast for its customers, but also provides learning experiences for its employees.

“This is a student-run business, and I’m just the facilitator,” Booth said. “The students do everything.”

The bakers shop for muffin ingredients on Tuesdays and bake the treats on Thursdays. They prepare their muffins in the food lab and kitchen they share with the Family and Consumer Science classes. “We oversee the students in the kitchen, but they are doing the measuring and the baking,” Booth stated, noting that her teaching assistants - Angie Horn and Melisa Musser - supervise as well. The class members take a food safety class with the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, and they display their certificates on their delivery carts to indicate they’ve had the training, Booth noted. Each week, the E-town Bakers prepare blueberry muffins and a rotating feature muffin, which they select from a large recipe book in the classroom. Each customer also receives coffee, tea or juice. “We make about eight dozen muffins a week,” Booth commented, noting that the bakers get to eat a muffin of their choice, and leftovers are shared with the building’s custodians. There are currently 10 students in the class, and they deliver to 85 customers each week. The students bill the customers monthly. “On the first Friday of the month, they

Calling all superheroes - and their moms. GEARS will hold its annual Mother/Son Super Hero Bowling event on Saturday, March 4,from 1 to 3 p .m. at Clearview Lanes, 1990 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Preregistration is required and limited on a firstcome, first served-basis. The registration deadline is Sunday, Feb. 26.

“This is a fun and unique event, and it’s a really good opportunity for mothers and sons to bond,” said Erin Thomas, GEARS administrative assistant. “Sometimes, mothers and sons get left out, since we do things like our Daddy/Daughter Dance. This is a way to include them.”

Thomas noted that people come dressed up in a variety of superhero costumes. “We’ve had people who go all out and get their makeup done,” she stated.

collect the money and total it up, which is a huge life skill to work on,” Booth commented. The bakers are a self-sustaining business, with any extra proceeds used to help fund opportunities for community learning such as trips to the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster.

Booth remarked that the E-town Bakers are learning much more than how to make muffins. “When we grocery shop, we teach mini

lessons and talk about unit price and cost comparison,” she explained. “We talk about budgeting and how they need to spend within our means. … Even just knocking on doors, saying hello, greeting and talking to the teachers they deliver to is a life skill. It’s really great, because these students spend most of their day with me, and they don’t see a lot of other teachers, so this is a nice

way for them to say hello, to interact and to meet new people.”

The program has been so well received at Elizabethtown, it’s prompted other districts to consider similar classes, Booth said, adding that she’s seen so many benefits for her students. “Since I typically have these students for four years, it’s been great to see how they grow and evolve over those four years,” she shared. “Some wouldn’t even knock on the doors when they first started, because they were too nervous, but they end up growing in their leadership through this.”

was chosen from the 29 fairs in Zone 4 of PSACF, which comprises a total of 108 fairs across the state.

Another aspect of the State Convention was the Communications Competition, which featured a variety of categories for all fairs to enter. At the Communications Breakfast, PSACF announced that the Elizabethtown

ROMAINE SHAUD

Romaine Shaud, 92, entered life eternal peacefully on Sunday, January 15th, 2023. Alifelong resident of Elizabethtown, Romaine had spent the last few years living in Upland, California with her daughter, Sandy. She was the daughter of Cora and Joseph Eckinger, Sr., and the sister of Joseph Eckinger, Jr., and Helene Beck. She is survived by her son, Tom Shaud, and wife Cyndi of Elizabethtown, her daughter, Sandy Watts of Upland, California, granddaughters Aubrey Hochstuhl, Afton Shaud, and Lisa Nasif, three greatgrandsons, and many extended family members. Romaine graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1948 where she enjoyed being a majorette in the school band. After high school she obtained her cosmetology license and began working at Dot’s Beauty Shop on High Street. She spent the next chapter of her life actively raising her children, and even being a Den Mother with the Boy Scouts. She played an influential role in many of her children’s friends lives, as her home became the neighborhood hang out spot. After many years in the beauty industry, she built her own home and salon, Village House of Beauty. When Romaine became a grandmother, she found great joy in spending time with her granddaughters, and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on. In her later years, Romaine was very involved with her church, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown, and the Flower Club in Mt. Joy, where she enjoyed time with friends. Romaine will be remembered as a strong, independent, and loving mother, grandmother, and friend to many. Afuneral service will be held February 25th at 10am at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Operation Smile at www.operationsmile.org.

“I would call this play a dramedy,” said Jonah McDonald, describing “Brighton Beach Memoirs.” “Parts are very funny, but parts are sad, too.” “Brighton Beach Memoirs” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 26.

The boy’s basketball team was able to top Conestoga Valley 61-53 ton Tuesday, February 7 thanks to four double digits scorers. Caiden Zeager led that pack with 18 points while Braden Cummings added 15 with both Noah Locke and Brenden Lehman chipping in 13 points.

Locke paced the Bears in the

first and fourth quarters, splitting his 13 points between the two frames. The remaining trio helped control the middle two quarters which is where Elizabethtown took over thanks to a 37-19 run. Zeager scored 10 of his 18, Cummings 11 of his 15 and Lehman all 13 of his points during the crucial run.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

In the world of sports there are seasons you never want to

end, and others where the end cannot come fast enough. The girls’ basketball team has just about wrapped up the latter type of season where a 53-40 loss to Conestoga Valley on February 7th dropped the Lady Bears to 3-18 overall and 1-10 in league play.

Despite the final outcome, Elizabethtown opened strong with a 14-13 first quarter leading into a 26-23 halftime cushion. From there it was all CV with the Lady Buckskins holding a 30-14 edge in the second half, flipping E-town’s three point halftime lead into a 13-point CV victory. Chloe Wilkinson netted a team high 17 in the loss.

BOWLING

The bowling team wrapped up their regular season with wins over Lebanon and Spring Grove, both by 7-0 finals. Zach Wentzel went wild against Lebanon on the 2nd, posting a 749 series with Mason Moore adding a 686 series and Elle Eberle a 682 series. Add in a 610 series from Derek Deardorff and a 595 series for Declan Lentz and you get a 7-0 win.

One day later the Bears traveled to Spring Grove and returned a 7-0 winner over the Rockets. This time Moore stepped to the top of the leader board with a 650 series while Eberle moved up with a 617 match. Deardorff (578) and Lentz (576) finished just two pins apart while Wentzel rounded out the win with a 518 series.

RIFLE

The rifle team split their final two matches, settling at 8-6 on the season. Elizabethtown topped Conestoga Valley on the 2nd, using a 100 from

Parker Bryant as well as 99s from Luke Turner and Branden Rain to pick up the easy 494-487 victory. Adilynn Ginder and Calista Bryant rounded out the scoring five with matching 98s.

The Bears finished their season on the 7th with a trip to Neffsville where they fell to Manheim Township, 497-495. Rain and Parker notched a perfect match with Kylie Mummau just missing with her 99. Calista Bryant and Turner completed the top five with scores of 98.

WRESTLING

The wrestling team moved a few steps closer to the end of their regular season with a February 7th match opposite Governor Mifflin as well as a February 4th trip to Wrightsville for the Eastern York Duals.

The Bears were 4-0 in Wrightsville, collecting the team title as the lone undefeated team. Elizabethtown’s toughest match was against York Tech where they were a 46-27 winner. E-town had one forfeit winner, Kai Laszakovits at 145 but added the max team points with pinfall wins by Ryan Findley (152), Bradley Candy (215), Hayden Best (114), Francis Burke (121) and Nathan Thomas (139). Top things off with tech fall wins by Aiden Robins at 160 and Austin Reitmeyer at 127 and you get a runaway victory.

Against Harrisburg, E-town was able to withstand five straight Cougars wins from 152 through 215 by answering with six straight wins to close out the 46-25 victory. Best was the lone grappler in that six match stretch that

failed to record a pinfall, settling for a 13-3 major decision win at 114. Candy (285), Trent Smith (107), Burke (121), Reitmeyer (127) and Dakota Petrosky (133) completed the match winning stretch. The Bears opened the action with two more pinfall wins with Thomas (139) and Laszakovits (145) earning those two victories.

Against Eastern York the match was close in the beginning with Robinson’s pinfall

win at 160 the lone victory over the opening three matches. Candy quickly turned things around with a forfeit at 215 that kicked off nine straight wins for Elizabethtown. Smith (107), Best (114), Burke (121), Laszakovits (139) and Findley (145) all posted pinfall wins in that run while Andrew Kouyateh followed Candy’s forfeit with an old fashion decision at 285. Reitmeyer added a tech

fall at 127 and Thomas a major decision at 133 to cap the victory.

The Bears final win of the day was an easy 60-12 thrashing of Lancaster Catholic. Elizabethtown won 11 of the 13 matches with eight coming with the full six team points. Four of those were quick forfeit wins with Devin Forney (172), Collin Huggins (189), Smith (107) and Best (114) enjoying the easy points. Djemba N’Dikwe picked up the first pinfall win at 152 while Reitmeyer accounted for the final pinfall at 127. Candy at 285 and Robinson at 160 added the remaining two pinfall wins. Findley opened the match with

a major decision at 145 with Burke’s tech fall at 121 and Thomas’ decision at 133 cleaning up the team scoring.

February 7th sent Elizabethtown to Governor Mifflin with the Bears returning after a 39-36 setback. The match started well for E-town with wins in six of the first seven bouts, starting with four straight pinfalls. Best (114), Burke (121), Reitmeyer (127) and Thomas (133) were the winners of those four matches with Findley (145) and Robinson (152) picking up the final two wins. The Mustangs played spoiler by claiming the final six matches, stealing the win.

moments that will get audiences thinking. “A lot of heavy real-life issues come to the surface,” she explained. “It’s set in the 1930s, but the issues facing this family still ring true today.”

Medicare Seminar Posted

A Medicare seminar will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at Paramount Senior Living, 2760 Maytown Road, Maytown. A pasta buffet will be open from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for anyone needing dinner before the class.

The seminar will include information on the parts of Medicare, enrollment timelines, what to do if one is still working when he or she turns 65, the difference between a Medicare Advantage Plan and Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan, Part D Prescription Coverage, the doughnut hole, and more. There will be a time for general questions as well as individual conversations with the presenter, Stephanie Yarberough, after the seminar.

The seminar is free. To reserve a seat, call 717426-0033.

Lauri Lewis, who plays Eugene’s aunt, Blanche, agreed, noting that audiences will be able to relate to the characters on stage.

“Almost everyone in the audience is going to say, ‘I’ve had that fight before with my family members’ or ‘I’ve had that discussion,’” she stated, joking, “People will see this show and think, ‘My family isn’t so bad.’”

The play features of a cast of seven, four of whom are under the age of 18, noted director Michael Swanson. Rounding out the cast are Craig Copas, Elliot Evans, Carly Evans and Molly Weiler.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” is an autobiographical story, Swanson stated, adding that it’s the first in a trilogy of plays Simon wrote about his life. “It’s a depiction of Simon’s youth and members of his family, probably with a rosier glow than reality,” he

remarked. “It’s a sort of idealized version of his family.”

The show marks Swanson’s first time directing at Susquehanna Stage, although he has directed this play elsewhere. Themes of the show include not only family but also the idea of striking out on your own, McDonald said. “I think audiences will leave the play pondering what they maybe took for granted in their lives,” he shared. “Jerome is eager to get away from his family, but then he realizes that his life is not the same without this group of people.”

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 17 and 24; Saturdays, Feb. 18 and 25; and Thursday, Feb. 23. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 19 and 26. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https://susquehanna stage.com.

“We have people who come in store-bought costumes, and we have people who come in homemade outfits.”

The event will feature a variety of games and contests, including a costume contest with prizes. “We also have a prize train that runs a couple of times throughout the event and picks a random participant, and they are able to get a prize,” Thomas commented.

GEARS began offering a bowling event for mothers and sons in 2016, but added the superhero theme two years ago, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator. “We have done other mother/son events, like a safari, and we tried

mother/son roller-skating,” she recalled. “Bowling seemed to generate the most interest, so we’re sticking with that.” In the past, GEARS also held a mother/son fall ball, a more formal event similar to its Daddy/Daughter Dance, but it hasn’t been held since the pandemic began, although Eberly noted GEARS may bring it back at some point.

The mother/son bowling will feature unlimited games of bowling, along with pizza and drinks for participants. “We have a selfie booth we put up, and it’s really cool to see all the pictures on Facebook after an event like this,” Eberly said. “It’s just a lot of fun.”

There is a fee per mother/son couple for the event, with a discounted additional fee for additional sons. To register or for more information, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.
