Jubilee Ministries might be most familiar to people who have driven by or shopped at its stores in Annville, Lebanon, Manheim, Myerstown, and Palmyra, but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes of the bustling thrift stores as the organization aims to fulfill its mission to rebuild, restore, and renew lives. Income from the stores, which sell a wide variety of quality used clothing, furniture, electronics, and housewares, support what chief executive officer Ryan Newswanger listed as Jubilee’s three core avenues of outreach: a prison chaplaincy ministry, a prison after-care program, and summer camp scholarships provided to local children and youths affected by incarceration. “Most people know us from the stores, and they don’t necessarily know there’s a significant ministry going on,”

remarked Newswanger. “Most of what we do happens behind bars and barbed wire, so no one sees it.” Seventeen chaplains are currently on staff with Jubilee and spend time with inmates at 10 prison facilities in Pennsylvania. That time is split between leading worship services and Bible studies and recovery groups, teaching life skills classes, and offering one-on-one counseling to men and women. “I often tell people our chaplains are very much like missionaries,” Newswanger said. “Prison is certainly a place where the Gospel is needed.” Taking the message of salvation and freedom available through Jesus Christ See Jubilee pg 2
Evoni (center) attended Kenbrook Bible Camp in Lebanon thanks to the camp scholarships that Jubilee Ministries provides for local children and youths who have a parent who is incarcerated or in another challenging situation. “Camp has been one of the biggest impacts in my life,” shared Evoni. Jubilee also offers a prison chaplaincy ministry and after-care program.

into prisons was how Jubilee got its start in 1972. “There was a revival, and a group of young people felt called to go into the Lebanon County Prison,” relayed Newswanger. What began at the prison with prayer and young adults boldly sharing testimonies of what God had done in their lives grew to include a thrift store in Lebanon to generate funds to support chaplains to go into area prisons. Several other store locations were launched as the entire ministry multiplied. The after-care program began in 1993 as a way to purposefully support people coming out of prison and transitioning back into society. “We’ve been doing reentry since before it was called re-entry,” Newswanger said with a smile. Men may apply to be part of the program, which offers group housing with faith-based and life skills classes to attend, as well as job training and work at the Lebanon thrift store. Newswanger described the program as very structured and designed to help each individual meet specific goals.

“The change can happen, and we see it all the time,” stated Newswanger. “The most fascinating thing about this ministry is how someone can go from committing whatever crime they did and being at a very low point and then seeing the transformation that can happen if they choose to follow Christ.” Newswanger considers it an honor to watch men who have completed the after-care program then go on to become a successful part of the workforce, own businesses, pastor churches, and raise healthy families. For children and youths who are or have been impacted by incarceration, Jubilee offers one-week summer camp scholarships to local faith-based camps every year. The scholarships - which are in the average amount of $400 - are available to any young person ages 8 to 17 whose parents are currently in a prison served by one of Jubilee’s chaplains or are being served through Jubilee’s after-care program. The idea is that each individual will be able to relax and have fun at camp and be exposed to the Gospel. “The tragedy for the kids (who have

ET Bears Fall to L-S in L-L Quarterfinals
by Eric Pyles
If revenge is a dish best served cold then the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team was dealt a large serving on February 10th courtesy of the Lampeter-Strasburg boys’ basketball team. Three-hundred and sixty-three days after E-town bounced L-S from the 2018-2019 LL tournament with a 47-45 quarterfinal victory, the Pioneers did the same to Elizabethtown with a 64-61 victory in the 2019-2020 edition of the L-L Championships. As this year’s quarterfinal battle got underway it looked as if the Bears would have little trouble with the Section Three champs. The reason was a Brody Beach fueled run that had Elizabethtown sporting a tidy 13-point lead after the opening frame. Beach picked up 10 of his 15points in the first eight minutes helping E-town post that 28-15 edge. The Pioneers had other ideas and used the second quarter to put together a 13-3 run that shrank Etown’s lead to three, making it a 31-28 game at halftime. Lampeter-Strasburg continued their strong push on the other side of the break, posting a 21-12 third quarter edge. That sent the teams into the final frame with the Pioneers on top 49-43. Elizabethtown recovered in the fourth behind the work of Elijah Eberly but it was not enough to overcome the shaky middle frames. The senior scored eight of his team high 21 points down the stretch, helping Elizabethtown to an 18-15 edge and shrinking the final margin to just three points. Patrick Gilhool added 11 points to give Elizabethtown three double
digit scorers. BOWLING The bowling team had a busy stretch with three separate Lancaster-Lebanon League events spread across last week. The initial action sent the Bears to Palmyra on Monday the 10th for the LancasterLebanon League Team Championship. Elizabethtown enjoyed a quarterfinal win over Lancaster Catholic before getting tripped up in the semifinals by eventual champion Cedar Crest. “They are the defending state champs,” said head coach Frank Telenko of the 2-0 loss to the Falcons. “They’re as good and maybe ever better then last year! We bowled well. They are just in a different league as far as talent and experience goes.” That experience led to wins of 1097-984 and 1143-945 for the Falcons with three Bears posting two game tallies just over the 400pin count. Andrew Telenko led the way with a 408 with Alaina Telenko (404) and Eryn Moore (403) finishing just off that pace. Zach Wentzel was the final Bear bowler to go in both games, finishing with a 367 total. Ben Davis and Gabe Berrier split the fifth and final spot with Davis rolling a 154 and Berrier a 193. Elizabethtown earned that semifinal spot with a sweep of their own in the quarterfinals where they topped Lancaster Catholic 972-805 and 814-790. Just two Bears bowled both games in the win with Moore posting a 402 and Davis a 351. Five other Bears all finished within 24pins of each other, led by Eberle and his 194. Wentzel (181) and Berrier (180) finished just one pin apart
while Alaina and Andrew Telenko did the same with their 171-170 scores. Deardorff rounded out the Bear bowlers with a 137. The boy’s took center stage on February 13th with the LancasterLebanon League holding the boy’s singles championships at Clearview Lanes. Elizabethtown had five keglers advance out of the first round with all five qualifying for the upcoming district and regional competition. Eberle led that group by posting the sixth best pin total with his 1007. Andrew Telenko and Wentzel finished their five qualifying rounds just two pins apart with Telenko (928) slotting in 15th and Wentzel (926) in 16th. Davis checked in with the 24th best qualifying tally of round one thanks to his 892 while Deardorff made the cut with his 854. Three of the five improved their
standing through the second round of qualifying with Eberle making the biggest move. The sophomore finished his nine qualifying rounds with an 1825 moving him from sixth all the way to the top spot heading into the step-ladder finals. That move dropped Eberle into the final match, guaranteeing no worse than a L-L silver. Eberle did end up with silver after dropping his finals battle to Cedar Crest’s Daren Zombro III by a 184-160 count. The four remaining Bear bowlers all missed the finals cut but two of them did improve their standing none the less. Davis jumped from 24th to 14th with his 1660 final while Deardorff also moved ten spots, from 30th to 20th, with his 1602. Telenko and Wentzel each dropped a few places in the final standings with Telenko (1635) taking 19th and Wentzel (1576) 22nd after all the qualifying rounds
were counted. The Lady Bears took center stage on February 14th, joining the rest of the L-L at Dutch Lanes for the girl’s singles tournament. Three of the five Elizabethtown bowlers advanced out of round one with all three, Moore, Alania Telenko and Hannah Griffie securing district and regional berths in the process. Moore and Telenko finished the opening five rounds of qualifying just a few pins apart with Telenko’s 894 topping Moore’s 889 by five pins. Griffie also eclipsed the 800pin barrier, earning her spot in round two with an 816. Ally Evans (707) and Makenna Locke (466) fell
short of the round two cut and saw their season come to a close. Moore and Telenko continued their impressive run in the second round with the pair both making the step-ladder finals. Griffie did not join her teammates in the finals after finishing qualifying with a 1463 that checked in as the 14th best tally. Telenko finished the second round with a 1619, good enough for fifth place and a spot in the finals opposite Penn Manor’s Katelyn Welsh. That is where Telenko’s title run stopped as she dropped that clash, 210-185. Moore’s qualifying total of 1603 See E-town pg 6

A slow first half for the Chargers resulted in a narrower lead than they had hoped for at the halftime break, holding just a four-point advantage over Lititz, 28-24. “We were very aware of what we were not doing well,” acknowledged Pruner regarding the first half. “The team had a determined focus in the second half to improve. I loved how they responded to adversity with a fighter’s mentality and kept each other accountable.” Masters led the offensive contributions, putting in 22 points with over half of them coming from beyond the arc, netting four three pointers and dishing out five assists. Lead scorer Aidan Masters was a major factor in the fourth quarter surge, netting 15 of his game high 27 points. “I struggled in the first half but focused on getting shots in the flow of our offense and getting to the hoop,” Masters reflected. The junior was quick to give credit to the team-wide effort and praise the Lord for their success. “We pulled together as a team and prevailed. al opportunities to convert, leading the way on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds. The post-season journey is far from over as the team now sets their sites on a District III playoff run, earning a firstround bye and facing their first District III opponent on Thursday. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The girls CCAC playoff run ended on a bittersweet note last Saturday. Despite two prior wins earning them a spot in the finals, the team fell 34-23 to Christian School of York in the title match. Fouls and a scoring drought in the first half put the Lady Chargers at a 25-8 deficit at the midway break, but, to their credit, the team refused to quit and rallied in the third, going on a 9-2 run to open the period. Despite their efforts, the squad came up just short of a full comeback. In order to punch their ticket to the finals, the Mount Calvary crew needed to take down Lititz Christian, and got the job done in overtime on Thursday night, 38-31. With neither team able hold onto the lead for long, the contest resulted in a knotted game at 27 apiece when regulation expired, but the overtime period turned out to be the Lady Chargers strongest on both ends of the court, going on an 11-4 run advance to the finals. A dozen points from Kara Locker kept the Chargers offense rolling, supported by eight from Julia Martin and seven from Naomi Ewing. Defensively, Ewing and Kenzie Baughman put the pressure on the Eagles coming up with five and four steals respectively. On Tuesday, the first round of the
tournament held a lack of points for Point Baptist, 27-22. High Point entered the week as the either opponent and turned the match into a defensive showdown in which the third seed in the CCAC East division, and See Chargers pg 6 Chargers managed to squeeze past High

Chargers from pg 5 being the teams’ first clash against each other this season, neither could be certain what to expect. “We felt like it was a good matchup for us defensively, that we could hold them to a number in the twenties,” noted Ferrari. “As it turns out, we absolutely had to hold them in order to win because we struggled so much on offense.” Utilizing their full court and man-toman defense the Lady Chargers used their speed and intensity to control the contest, and despite the slow-going on the offensive end, the strategy worked and was enough to advance the MC photo by Cheri Sine club. “Our game plan was to speed the game up and create the tempo that we felt comfortable playing, which is typically a lot faster than most teams are comfortable with,” Ferrari added. loss to Palmyra’s Jacob Myers. A pinfall win over Ian Brown of Donegal counted for Robinson’s second win while a 10-4 loss to Solanco’s Robbie Fulton was his second loss and ended the freshman’s season. Rudy ended his sophomore season with a 7-5 loss to Nick Salgado of Lampeter-Strasburg in the consolation round. He ended up in the consolation bracket after a quarterfinal loss to Warwick’s Hayden Shreiner which followed a 7-3 win over Milton Hershey’s Chase Usner in the Round of 16. Rudy’s second win came opposite Manheim Central’s Bryce Dombach by a 7-4 final which setup the showdown with Salgado. Elizabethtown had two wrestlers finish the weekend with just one win. had her one spot behind Telenko in sixth place, setting up a battle with Cedar Crest’s Rebecca Bridegan. The Lady Falcon finished on top 208-133 on her way to a second-place finish while Moore had to settle for making the finals. WRESTLING Ten Bear wrestlers made the short trip from Elizabethtown to Landisville to take part in the sectional round of the District 3 Championship help at Hempfield High School on February 14th and 15th. As the final bell sounded on Saturday evening none of those 10 Bears qualified for a trip to Hershey for the District 3-3A Tournament on February 21st and 22nd. Despite all 10 falling short of qualifying on the mat, one grappler did well enough to earn ‘first alternate’ status. That one was Bobby Walters who did his work in the 145-pound bracket and advanced all the way to the fifth-sixth place match. Walters posted a 15-1 major decision over Kam Fickers of Hempfield in that bout, earning redemption for Fickers’ quarterfinal victory that ended Walter’s run at gold. The fifth-place finish put Walters on the fringe of the district tournament as only the top four received an automatic spot in Hershey. Walters will get the nod if one of those four wrestlers is unable to go on February 21st. Walters opened his weekend with that loss to Fickers but responded with two straight consolation wins. The first was a 6-0 victory over Warwick’s Reese VanScoten while the second was a 7-4 final over Charlie Leidig of Manheim Township. Central Dauphin’s Wayde McClune broke up Walters’ run, setting up that rematch with Fickers. Three other Bears finished their time in Landisville with 2-2 records but still saw their seasons come to a close. Ryan Findlay was the first, doing his work in the 126-pound bracket where an opening round loss to Penn Manor’s Trevor Grassel put Findlay one loss away from elimination. Findlay rebounded with an 11-4 win over Palmyra’s Deacon Turner coupled with a forfeit win over Hershey’s Ayden Bertoldi before an 83 loss to Josh Minners of Milton Hershey ended things. Aiden Robinson and Jake Rudy followed the same path to their 2-2 mark with Robinson doing his work in the 138-pound bracket. Robinson opened with a win over LampeterStrasburg’s Logan Bonholtzer but saw his title hopes end with a quarterfinal

A for-profit and not-for-profit collaboration has been formed in an effort to ensure that the community work being done at Columbia Creative Factory (CCF), 247 Locust St., Columbia, will be able to continue. An offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory, the CCF has been offering low-cost and free art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. The building that housed the organization for four years on a donated basis was listed for sale in January 2019, explained CCF volunteer Andrea Campbell. At that time, Campbell and others at CCF organized a capital campaign with

hopes of purchasing the building. Approximately $185,000 has been raised of the $425,000 needed to buy the building and make necessary upgrades, including ADA accessibility. The final deadline for the campaign is Saturday, Feb. 29. Individuals interested in making a tax-deductible donation to support the Columbia Creative Factory may visit www.columbiacreativefactory.org. One supporter has offered to match the next $25,000 raised so that contributions will be doubled. If CCF purchases the building, The Pottery Works, a paint-your-own-pottery studio located at 16 W. Orange St., Lancaster, plans to launch a new location at the site of the current CCF in the spring. “We see so much potential in Columbia as we did in (downtown) Lancaster in

Campbell explained that with The Pottery Works as an anchor tenant in the building, the nonprofit-owned space will remain on the Columbia Borough tax rolls. Plus, the addition of The Pottery Works to the facility will guarantee the building is open to the public seven days a week. “The concentration of artists in this space, in a secure position to remain here for years to come, could be a huge economic driver,” noted Campbell. The CCF building was once home to Heineman’s Department Store. “People walk in and they love the space. They love remembering what happened here when they were kids and shopping here,” Campbell shared. “You’ve got the older generation coming in and having those memories that were here, and by reopening this iconic building on the main street to the public for creative processes, what we expect is that once we own the building it will be a secure space so that 20 years from now they can come back in with their kids and they’ll have those memories just like the grandparents have the memories of Heineman’s.” One CCF project that Campbell said received positive community feedback
