Elizabethtown

Set sail for fun with “The Pirates of Penzance”

Describing Elizabethtown Area High School’s spring musical, cast member Josie Sirinides said, “It’s a pirate opera, a pirate musical, which is so fun. ‘Pirates’ and ‘opera’ are two things you wouldn’t think go together, but it works.”

The school will present “The Pirates of Penzance” at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 27 and 28, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. The show will be performed at the high school, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

Written by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan in 1879, “The Pirates of Penzance” follows Frederic, a young man on the verge of discovering life.

“Frederic is very young, very naïve, and I wouldn’t say he’s dumb, but he’s very earnest,” said Brendan Fritz, a senior who plays the character. “At a young age, he was indentured to a band of pirates. Now he’s 21 years old, and he’s out of his apprenticeship and he goes off into the world, which he has never seen before. That’s where he meets a bunch of other characters.”

Frederic is the ward of The Pirate King, portrayed by senior Scott Creason.

“He was indentured to me as a small child, and I’ve raised him in the ways of piracy,” Scott shared. “Now he wants to leave, and I don’t like that, but I have to let him go.”

The Pirate King discovers a loophole in Frederic’s contract and decides to exploit that, knowing Frederic is a man who takes his duty very seriously and won’t be able to say no.

“One thing that sets this musical apart from others is there is very little actual dialogue. It’s

almost all singing,” said Brendan. “A lot of the songs are very fast paced, patter songs.”

The most well-known song in the show, “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” is performed by freshman Stephan Fasick, who plays Major-General Stanley.

Other big numbers in the show include “With Cat-Like Tread,” a song that reflects the irony of the musical.

“It’s a song about how quiet they are being, but it’s a very loud, huge song,” shared Josie, who plays Ruth, a nurse who has helped to raise Frederic.

Although the musical is technically an operetta, it’s still accessible, she noted.

“It’s very entertaining to watch and listen to,” she said. “It’s a fresh style of storytelling that isn’t seen in a lot of contemporary musicals.”

Junior Makayla Weaver plays

Frederic’s love interest, Mabel, the youngest daughter of Major-General Stanley. She agreed that the word “opera” may cause audiences to hesitate about seeing the show, but they shouldn’t.

“It’s a really fun and spontaneous show,” she explained.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen next. It’s not classical opera; there are a lot of fun jokes.”

The musical features a cast and crew of about 130 students under the direction of Christy Blaisdell, Lauren Ritter and Aaron Oliver.

Natalie Ott portrays another lead character, the Sergeant of Police. The sound managers are senior Andrew Stoner and junior Dia Gilleland, and the light managers are juniors Connor Dellinger and Ryan Siler.

Seniors Adrienne Crick, Katie Lowell and Emma Griffith are the stage managers.

“We help to plan the set, and we plan and arrange all of the

building, as well as organize the people who are helping backstage,” Adrienne said.

Emma encourages audiences to come to the show, noting it’s full of surprises.

“If you are familiar with this show, you may think it’s an older show, but we put a fresh new twist on it,” she said. “There are little bits throughout the show for all ages to enjoy.”

From swordfighting to slapstick, there’s something for everyone in this musical, said Scott.

“It’s a typical pirate adventure, except it has music added to it,” he commented. “If you’re expecting to come here and have an amazing time, we’re not going to disappoint you.”

Tickets for the production may be purchased at https://tinyurl .com/EAHSPirateTix or at the door one hour before performances by cash or check only.

In 2023, looking to launch a social media campaign called “Letters to Letterkenny,” a pen pal program between Elizabethtown and its Irish sister city, located in County Donegal, Kim Winey found a robust Facebook page, Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter. She connected with a man named Donnan Harvey through the page and proposed the concept. Harvey’s response, however, revealed a surprise: The two towns are no longer sister cities.

“He let me know that the Letterkenny town council that signed the 2002 memorandum had dissolved in 2014, due to an economic collapse, making the agreement null and void,” Winey shared. “However, they were excited to hear from Elizabethtown and expressed an interest in establishing our partnership again.”

Harvey continued talking with various leaders in Letterkenny, while Winey communicated with leaders in Elizabethtown to see if a reunification could take place.

Winey and Harvey chatted regularly through Facebook and, in 2024, a plan came together.

Winey had been hired for a job in Europe. ”I noticed that the Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter page didn’t have many professional photos representing the area,” she recalled. She reached out to Harvey to propose an idea: She’d come to Ireland to take photos for the page if he’d put her up somewhere and provide an itinerary of things to do in the Letterkenny area.

Church plans chocolate egg sale

Seven Sorrows Catholic Church in Middletown has announced its chocolate egg sale. The eggs will be sold through Easter Sunday, April 20, or as long as supplies last. Customers may purchase peanut butter, coconut, or butter cream eggs coated in either milk chocolate or dark chocolate. The hand-dipped eggs will be sold for a fee per egg.

The 2.4-ounce eggs have received regional recognition through various media outlets. In 2024, 50,000 eggs were sold through businesses, through direct orders, and at Seven Sorrows Parish. Roughly 5,000 pounds

of peanut butter, 600 pounds of butter/margarine, and 3,000 pounds of chocolate were used. This year, more than 100 volunteers will be called on to prepare and distribute the eggs.

All eggs will be sold on a firstcome, first-served basis while quantities last. Eggs will be sold at the Egg Store, located in the church parking lot at 280 N. Race St., Middletown. The Egg Store will be open on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fridays

from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., weather permitting, and while supplies last. Visitors should enter via Race Street for the safety of the school children.

Eggs may also be purchased at the parish’s fish fry, as well as at several local businesses. The fish frys will be held at 5 p.m. on Fridays from March 7 to April 11. Eggs will not be sold at either the parish or the school office this year. For more information, visit www.ssbvm.org.

Hunt for treasures at an indoor yard sale

Walk through the doors of the fellowship hall in Ruhl’s Church on Saturday, March 1, and you never know what you might find.

The church’s annual indoor yard sale will be held that day from 7 to 11 a.m., featuring antiques, collectibles, household items, toys, books, tools and a food stand. The church is located at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

More than 30 stand holders will participate in the event, said Kris Gray, a church member who coordinates the yard sale.

“There is always a wide variety of items for sale at good prices and a chance to chat with friends and neighbors,” she shared. “We normally have a great turnout because folks are eager to get out and enjoy one of

the first yard sales of the spring.”

A wide variety of food will also be for sale, including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and assorted beverages.

Again this year, a table will be set up offering new and used Bibles and devotional books for people of all ages, offered free of charge. One of the yard-sale tables will feature items donated by church members. All proceeds from the sale of those items will directly benefit the church and its missions.

There’s also a chance to win a door prize, Gray said.

“When attendees sign up to be added to our email list to receive notifications about upcoming events, they are registered for the

door prize,” she explained. Proceeds from stand holder donations and the food stand, as well as the donation table, help to fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine adult Sunday School class. This class organizes and distributes food boxes for local families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter; supports the church’s participation in Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse; and hosts a special banquet for senior citizens. The class also sends cards to homebound individuals and supports four local ministries as well as an overseas missionary.

Gray noted that the yard sale, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, would not be possible without the support of a team.

The indoor yard sale at Ruhl’s Church will feature a host of treasures. See Treasures pg 5

Exploring Marietta’s founding families

The presentation, “Public History and the Founding Families of Marietta,” will be held on Wednesday, March 12, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The program will be held in the Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House, 123 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

The evening will feature a journey through local history accompanied by heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

Eric Schubert, a public historian and forensic genetic genealogist, will present the program.

A graduate student at Millersville University, Schubert has gained national attention for his research expertise. As a student at Elizabethtown College, he collaborated with professor Jean-Paul Benowitz on a variety of public history projects.

“During this presentation, the stories behind Marietta’s founding families and influential business leaders, including the Duffys, Mehaffeys, Groshes, Hiestands, Stibgens and Spanglers will be discussed,”Schubert shared. “These movers and shakers had extensive personal stories and business endeavors that contributed to the economic development of Front Street, the Susquehanna River and the Pennsylvania Canal in the 19th century.”

He noted that not only is the topic an important part of Marietta’s history, but now is also the perfect time to share more with the community as students of the Elizabethtown College Public Heritage Studies Program are currently conducting historical research.

Schubert said people who attend the program can expect to learn more about the role Marietta played in the region’s past.

“Marietta has a vast history that is tied to other parts of Lancaster County, larger families and Pennsylvania as a whole,” he stated. “Some of these stories, personal narratives and connections have not been shared often publicly, and they offer fascinating insight into 19th-century Marietta and Lancaster County. Fresh research by Public Heritage Studies students has continued to bring up new finds. Find out if your family name or relatives are connected!”

The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County is dedicated to preserving the county’s historic sites and architecture through education and advocacy. As a nonprofit, the Trust collaborates with individuals, businesses and government

agencies to protect the integrity of local historic properties. Relying on membership, events and grants for support, the organization minimizes costs by using volunteers. Its mission is to ensure Lancaster’s architectural heritage remains a vital part of the community for future generations.

Schubert’s program will be held in the historic Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House, which serves as the headquarters for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County. The 18th-century Georgian-style home, built in 1780, was once home to Andrew Ellicott, who taught Meriwether Lewis navigation techniques used for the Lewis and Clark expedition of the western territories.

At Saint Luke Episcopal Church in Mount Joy, one Tuesday stands out from the rest.

The church, located at 209 S. Market St., will hold its annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, March 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. The meal will celebrate Mardi Gras and mark the beginning of the Lenten season.

The menu will include all-youcan-eat pancakes, link sausages, a fresh fruit cup and beverages. Shrimp and grits will be served as an a la carte option.

As Lynn McCleary, senior warden at the church, explained, the Southern appeal of the a la carte choice has been popular with guests in previous years - and she should know.

“The shrimp and grits bring flavors and textures you won’t soon forget, made lovingly by (me),” she said.

Along with the meal, visitors are invited to tour the historic church building.

“Saint Luke has a rich history and the sanctuary is beautiful and welcoming,” McCleary shared. “The tour can be guided or self-guided.”

The Rev. Martha Harris will also be available to offer private prayers for anyone seeking spiritual reflection.

Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as Mardi Gras, marks the final day of Ordinary Time before the Christian season of Lent begins the next day, Ash Wednesday. Observed worldwide under various names - including Fastnacht in Switzerland and parts of Germany and Sprengidagur in Iceland - the tradition often includes feasting and emptying the larders before the solemnity of Lent, a period of fasting and reflection leading up to Easter.

The Shrove Tuesday meal at Saint Luke has been popular in the

past, and McCleary expects a good crowd this year as well.

“We welcomed 100 guests last year, and it was a festive and filling experience for all involved,” she said.

Holding the meal allows the church to interact with the wider community and raise funds for on-site projects.

“We are a small congregation looking to raise money for our stained-glass window repair project,” she shared. “We strive to make a positive impact on our community, and good food has a way of

bringing people together. Come hungry, bring friends and enjoy an evening of food, fellowship, fun and festivity.”

The social hall and church sanctuary are fully handicapped-accessible via an elevator, and on-street parking is available. Tickets for the supper may be reserved by calling or texting Gail Fridy at 717-5380810. Reservations are preferred, but walks-ins are welcome. For more information, visit https://saintlukemountjoy.org or search for “St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (Mt. Joy, PA)” on Facebook.

Brieanna and her husband, Tyler, live in Lititz and attend White Oak Church. They enjoy traveling and exploring new places. Brieanna worked as a sixth-grade teacher for 13 years. “We have an amazing team of volunteers who advertise the event; set up all the tables; help the vendors find their stands; make the soup, egg sandwiches and other food items; run the food stand; and clean up after the event,” she said.

Ruhl’s Church holds community events throughout the year, and the indoor yard sale plays an important part in the church’s mission.

“We like to reach out to the

community to provide fellowship opportunities that also support the Lord’s work,” Gray said. Free parking is available for the indoor yard sale in a large lot on the church property, and the church is handicapped-accessible. Pets are prohibited in the building as is smoking.

Ireland

from pg 1

Winey told him she’d be coming only as a representative of herself and her business, not in any official Elizabethtown capacity, but Harvey and the Letterkenny leaders rolled out the red carpet for Winey and her sister, Dana Smith.

“Donnan’s a visionary and a doer,” Winey said. “While we were there, I was given an official greeting and handshake on the square from the mayor and several Letterkenny leaders. I wasn’t in a position to sign anything, of course, but it felt like we were giving new life to the cause. After the meeting, I shared a video of greetings from a few Elizabethtown leaders, including Mayor Mummert, who was also one of the original memorandum signers.”

While in Ireland, Winey noticed the striking similarities between Lancaster County and County Donegal. “We flew from Paris to Dublin, then took a bus to Letterkenny. As we were riding along, I thought, ‘No wonder people from Ireland settled in our area of Pennsylvania.’ The similarities in the landscapes were uncanny,” she said. “It was just beautiful.”

the sister cityhood.

“Moving forward, I’ve proposed a twofold plan to keep things relevant and longer lasting this time around. Number one, we could make a yearly commitment instead of an openended agreement,” she said. “The new memorandum could start with a short list of what we want to accomplish and be amended and re-signed, each year.”

Second, Winey suggests having representatives paired up from each town. “Having individual people directly connected to their sister city counterparts would create so many cross-connecting points that would help to carry the initiative forward,” she said, emphasizing that she is a visionary of ideas but has no decision-making power when it comes to the memorandum.

Harvey to Elizabethtown to experience it firsthand. Several entities are working behind the scenes to create “An Irish Weekend with Letterkenny,” set for Thursday through Sunday, March 13 through 16. Donnan and Sean Cafferkey - a Letterkenny native who guided Winey and her sister through Ireland before relocating to Harrisburg in 2024will enjoy the same royal treatment that the sisters experienced abroad.

During their time in Letterkenny and the surrounding areas, the sisters enjoyed historical tours, visited museums and natural attractions, savored Irish cuisine and met people who are as passionate about reconnecting the two towns as Winey is.

Since her return, she has partnered with local organizations to continue the connection with Letterkenny. She has also kept the conversation going with the Elizabethtown Borough as the towns start a process to revive

Reconnecting the two towns is a passion project for Winey, who said she can see many benefits. ”We can gain so much from each other. My visit there was very inspiring,” she remarked. “The more I learn about Letterkenny, what it’s overcome, as well as what its future plans are, the more I’m impressed. Additionally, forming the partnership again will help to further establish E-town’s identity. Our origin story largely comes from County Donegal, given that many immigrants settled here. The oldest building in Elizabethtown was built by a Scots-Irishman. Our founding family, who laid out Elizabethtown, also has County Donegal roots. And one of our historical museum’s buildings is a Scots-Irish-built log cabin.”

As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, Winey is hard at work on a new aspect of the project: bringing

Several of the weekend’s events are open to the public. For more details visit http://etownsirish weekend2025.stickyfolios.com/.

“Elizabethtown is eager to revive this connection to Letterkenny, and we welcome all to be part of the journey,” Winey said. “Whether you have Irish roots, a love for cultural exchange, or simply want to experience the joy of this rekindled partnership, we invite everyone to join in the celebration!”

Women’s group sets meeting

The Elizabethtown/Mount Joy Christian Women’s Connection invites area ladies to attend its “Spring Into Sweetness” brunch on Thursday, March 6, at 9:30 a.m. at Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant, 1050 W. Main St., Mount Joy.

The feature will be a local chocolatier with premium chocolates and secret Pennsylvania

German recipes.

Nancy Williams from New Bremen, Ohio, will share a message titled “You Are Priceless.” Williams will also present special music.

Reservations and payment must be received by Friday, Feb. 28. For more information or to make a reservation, call Sandy at 717-580-5421.
