Mitzvah Moms Give Back BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19.
“COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. Take A Pledge Against Underage Drinking BY CATHY MOLITORIS
y taking a pledge, parents can help put an end to underage drinking in Elizabethtown. That’s the mission behind No One’s House, a new initiative launched by Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). “No One’s House is a parentfocused campaign that is working to educate parents about the importance of not providing alcohol to teens, not even in your own house,” explained Allison Bridgeman, assistant director of EACTC. “A lot of parents think they want to provide a safe environment for teens to drink, or it’s not a big deal to let some teens drink at their home, but this program is working to change that mindset.” No One’s House is a parent-toparent campaign, meaning Bridgeman hopes parents will talk to each other about it and increase participation. “We want to encourage parents to talk to their teens about underage drinking and talk to each other,” she stated. “We want them to say, ‘It’s not OK for my teen to drink in my house. I know they are coming over to your house. Do you have conversations about underage drinking there?’”
“We all as parents want to help our kids be as healthy as possible, and that includes having those conversations about alcohol use.”
62% of sixth-grade students who have used alcohol said their parents gave it to them,” she said. “Parents think, ‘They’re going to try it anyway, so I should provide a safe environment to try it in my home.’ This campaign is about talking to your kids and saying, ‘I don’t think it’s OK for you to drink alcohol under the age of 21.’” Not only is underage drinking illegal, but it also can have devastating consequences, Bridgeman stated. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people a year, more than all illegal drugs combined. Nine out of 10 people with alcohol addiction started using before they were 18 years old. “What we really want parents to know is that providing teens with alcohol is not positive for teens. It’s not helping them in any way,” Bridgeman stated. “We all as parents want to help our kids be as healthy as possible, and that includes having those conversations about alcohol use.” To learn more about No One’s House or to sign the pledge, readers may visit https://eactc.org/programs -initiatives/nooneshouse.

We work to build up protective factors and decrease risk factors.” The organization has been serving the Elizabethtown community for more than 20 years and works to improve the lives of children, youths and families. Bridgeman was motivated to start No One’s House after learning about its effectiveness in other communities and after reviewing results of the Pennsylvania Youth Survey, which surveys students in sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th grades. “We know from this data that

Theater Plans Virtual Event Thousands of audience members did not get the opportunity to visit Mount Gretna last summer to enjoy professional theater performances. Now, after a year of dark stages, Gretna Theatre will kick off its 2021 season with a free livestreamed performance for the community. On Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., Gretna Theatre will present a program titled “Still Here.” Performances will highlight some of the theater’s past productions and feature prior Gretna Theatre actors. The theme touches on the idea that even though audiences cannot meet in person, Gretna Theatre is still present to entertain, engage, educate, and transform just in new and different ways. This evening serves as a fundraiser replacement for the canceled October gala and summer season, where the organization could not obtain its traditional revenue. The performance will be accompanied by a virtual
auction of unique experiences donated by local supporting businesses, and viewers can offer donations to help support Gretna Theatre begin its next season. The theater has had to furlough nearly all its employees and delay productions on a massive scale. It continues serving the community as a nonprofit through adapted arts education programs offered virtually to schools and community centers. Readers may visit www.gretna.givesmart.com to register for the event, preview auction items, and see which local businesses are supporting the future of Gretna Theatre. The one-hour performance will also be broadcast on Gretna Theatre’s Facebook page. As a way to upgrade the experience while offering support to Gretna Theatre’s education programs, viewers can purchase a VIP guest pass, which comes with a handcurated appetizer box from Graze Lancaster available for pickup.
Conversation E-town will feature Jean Boal on Zoom presenting “The Social Challenge of Global Warming.” The program will take place on Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. Participants will learn how they can combat climate change at the community level. To request access, readers may contact nancy@elizabethtownhistory.org. An Heirloom Seed Swap will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 6. Individuals are invited to share their heirloom seeds with other gardeners. A Garden Planning Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on March 13. Participants will learn how to develop an amazing garden for

ET Bears Work Through Crossover Games
Every year the LancasterLebanon League schedules crossover games, Section One and Section Two always tangle. Elizabethtown was able to kick off that crossover slate with a victory over Cedar Crest but losses to Hempfield and Manheim Township followed, snapping what had been a quick two game run for the Bears. Township used a monster, 24-7, opening frame as a springboard to a 59-47 victory on the 17th. The Bears
were a bit shell shock in the second, allowing Manheim an 11-5 edge but managed to hang with the Streaks over a 30-29 second half. Luke Pierson spread his team high 15 points over all four quarters while Patrick Gilhool picked up the bulk of his 10 points in the opening half. E-town’s first crossover loss came on the 13th via a 60-43 final at Hempfield. The first and fourth frames were the Bears undoing with the Knights holding a matching nine-point edge in each frame. Elizabethtown knocked two points off that deficit in the sec-

ond only to see Hempfield stretch their lead over the second half for the 60-43 final. Only four Bears scored led by Gilhool’s 17. Pierson added 14 and Techeal Gonquoi 10 with Matthew Gilhool picking up the final two points. Elizabethtown’s win over Cedar Crest came on the 11th with the Bears enjoying a 59-44 victory. Patrick Gilhool accounted for nearly half of Etown’s tally with a game high 26, including 11 of the Bear’s 13 first quarter points. Despite Gilhool’s outburst, the Bears trailed by one after one but managed to even the contest at 20-20 by intermission. An 18-8 third quarter run gave way to a 21-16 final frame and a 15-point win. Matthew Gilhool picked up eight of his 10 points in the fourth. WRESTLING The prevailing thought in the sports world is to finish strong and the E-town wresting team did just that. With lopsided wins over Middletown and Columbia, the Bears closed out their 2020-2021 campaign with a 9-3 mark. While both victories fall under the ‘lopsided’ category the Bears needed to only show up for their 63-9 February 16th win over Columbia. The reason, 11 of the 13 weight classes had forfeits with just two decided on the mat. Elizabethtown claimed one of them with Jake Rudy’s win at 152. Bears enjoying an easy victory included Kylie Mummau (106), Austin Reit-

Kyle Lloyd matched Shuck’s backto-back 99’s but was unable to collect any centers putting him in 14th. Allison Lowell, Nizaly Ortiz-Kreiner and Emily Bonsall rounded out the E-town shooters with Lowell posting a 196-1. Ortiz-Kreiner managed two centers in her opening relay but could not continue that shooting in her second, finishing with a 194-2. Bonsall wrapped things up for Elizabethtown with a 194-1 total. holding the 152-pound silver once all was said and done. Rudy earned his spot in the finals by pinning Northern Lebanon’s Cooper Gill 41-seconds into their semifinal bout. Rudy’s quarterfinal opponent, Jonah Gelbart of Hempfield had to bow out of their match in the second period due to injury. Walters was not as fortunate. The senior faced a brutal draw and ended up going 1-2 as a result. The draw saw Walters drop his opening match to the eventual 160-pound gold medal winner, Dylan Bard of Hempfield, and his consolation semifinal bout to the eventual bronze medalist, Jonathan Rathman of Cocalico. In between Walters was able to knock off Solanco’s Wade Adams by a 2-1 count. RIFLE The strangest season in Elizabethtown rifle history ended on February 13th when the Bears competed in the COVID version of the LancasterLebanon League Individual Tournament. Unable to meet in one location because of COVID, the L-L’s rifle teams were forced to improvise and the result was each school hosting their own six shooters. After all the scores were counted and sorted the Bears had one top 10 shooter in Emma Kreiser and one near miss in Aivery Shuck. Kreiser posted scores of 99 with one center and 100 with one center with her 199-2 total good enough for fourth place. Shuck posted back-to-back 99’s with one

The February 10th battle with Middletown did require actual wrestling but Elizabethtown still collected a lopsided 54-15 win. Once again, the Bears benefitted from forfeits but only three. Elizabethtown gave two forfeits back at 189 and 285 but the Bears eased the sting with six pinfall wins. Rudy posted the first pinfall, taking out Isaac Lupp in the second period of their 152-pound tangle. Walters followed with another second period pin. Reitmeyer (106), Wyatt Mummau (113) and Smith (138) all joined the second period pinfall fun. Reitmeyer took out Sam Miller, Mummau topped Chance Sweeny while Smith dispatched Dominic Corradi. Findley needed just 67 seconds to take care of Rhakye Wise at 132. Squeezed in the middle of the final two dual matches was the LancasterLebanon League Championship. The action took place on February 13th at Manheim Township but with the COVID restrictions only two Bears qualified for the tournament, Rudy at 152 and Walters at 160. Rudy made the most of his time in Neffsville, going 2-1 with his lone loss coming in the finals to Township’s Kevin Ollavaria. That left the junior

GOTR from pg 1
Sports from pg 4
In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization allows participants to connect with their friends in person or virtually. A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West. GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL COVID may have messed with the girls’ basketball team’s schedule, forcing the Lady Bears to go with no action for a week while not completing a game for a span of 22 days in January, but Elizabethtown is still able to stay focused. The Lady Bears came out of that hiatus and promptly extended their winning streak to five games. A loss to Ephrata on the 9th could have sent E-town spiraling, instead the Lady Bears responded by starting another winning streak. The first victory came by a 45-31
role model, be silly, and play fun games - that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and selfpaced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls are experiencing feelings of loneliness and depression as a result of the pandemic,” said Johnson. “We need our coaches to lead

E-town’s bid for a three-game run came to a halt on the 17th with a 4133 loss to Manheim Township. Two days later the Lady Bears continued their Section One-Two crossover tour by handing Hempfield a 46-36 loss. Elizabethtown had to climb out of another first quarter hole, this one 9-7. Moms from pg 1 “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19. “The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a
basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them. “It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the chal-

They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “We are looking at the longevity of Mitzvah Moms and continuing to give back.” The group is seeking both volunteers to help deliver baskets as well as nominations for recipients of baskets.
