“Made For This” Events To Support kindHuman Foundation By Chelsea Peifer

Humankind Water sells bottled water, organic tea, and lemonade with a greater purpose in mind: funding clean water projects for people around the world. “We exist to get people clean drinking water,” stated Meg Foltz. She serves as vice president of marketing for Humankind and as director of missions for the kindHuman Foundation, the nonprofit organization set up in conjunction with the company specifically to provide wells or water filtration or rain catchment systems to communities where people desperately need it. One hundred percent of net profits from Humankind sales goes toward funding clean water projects. Foltz explained that every bottle of Humankind Water that is purchased helps make it possible to get clean

water to one person for 100 days. “Similarly, every gallon of our lemonade and tea that is sold gets 50 gallons of clean drinking water to people in need,” Foltz noted. Based in Manheim, Humankind is actively involved in projects in Uganda and the Dominican Republic and has worked in Malawi, Tanzania, India, and Haiti in the past. Humankind has also provided clean water as part of disaster relief efforts in locations including Nepal, Texas, and Flint, Mich. “While our focus is primarily in meeting international needs, we are more than happy to help locally as needed,” commented Foltz. For the past four years, the kindHuman Foundation has hosted a fundraising event for the public, but this year organizers have upped the ante and are hosting not one, but two See Humankind pg 4

People are invited to learn more about the life-changing work being funded by Humankind at the kindHuman Foundation “Made For This” fundraisers at SUPPLY in Manheim on March 13 and at Merion Tribute House in Philadelphia on March 12. More than 200 students from school districts and independent schools throughout the region converged on the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s (LCCTC) Brownstown, Mount Joy, and Willow Street campuses on Feb. 14 to compete in the District 4 SkillsUSA Competitions. Career and Technology Education students brought their skills, experience, and techniques to take part in dozens of different competition categories from Automotive Skills Technology to Criminal Justice and from Job Interview Skills to Dental Assisting. The day of competitions culminated at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, where winners were announced and awards were conferred. Many LCCTC students competed in the district-level competitions at Franklin

County Career and Technology Center on Jan. 17; students from a SkillsUSA-hosting CTC often compete at an adjacent CTC in order to avoid home team bias and due to the fact that not all CTCs offer every SkillsUSA competition category. LCCTC District results from the Feb. 14 competitions are as follows: Advertising Design, Mackenzie Smith, Brownstown (BT), Commercial Art, Elizabethtown, third place; Architectural Drafting, Luke Gehlert, BT, Architectural CAD/Design, Cocalico, second place; Architectural Drafting, Jared Martin, BT, Architectural CAD/Design, Cocalico, first place; Cabinet Making, Dylan Zimmerman, BT, Cabinet Making, ELANCO, fourth place; Cabinet Making, Tyler Stauffer, BT, Cabinet Making, ELANCO, second place; Collision Repair, Andrew Bedwell, Willow Street (WS), Collision Repair, Donegal, second place; Crime Scene Investigation, Brianna Barnes/Leah Matthews/Amy Nguyen,

DSAA from pg 1 recovery to come, but we also want people in the community to come. Our goal is to bring people together.” In 2014, Emminger’s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23. Emminger and other Donegal-area residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities. DSAA, which also now stands for Delivering Supportive Approaches to Addiction to encompass the organization’s goal to reach people well beyond the Donegal area, moved into its new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, on Oct. 1, 2019, and began hosting weekly 12-step yoga sessions and other events for the public. DSAA is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Free computer access, coffee and snacks, hygiene products, and gently used clothing are available for people as needed. DSAA staff and trained volunteers are also available to listen and talk and to point people in the direction of helpful resources. “The goal here is to make recovery commonplace. Recovery should be expected, because anyone that is struggling with addiction can recover, and it’s becoming easier to find resources,” Emminger shared. Providing a space for connection is an important part of the recovery process, she added, so that people have aftercare when leaving a treatment facility. DSAA aims to offer that as well as consistent support for people with loved ones facing an addiction. Programs centered on education, prevention, and awareness are also offered. Ongoing programs include a Moms in Recovery Coffee Hour from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and 12-step yoga from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Children are welcome to join mothers at the coffee hour; however, separate child care is not provided. At yoga, mats are provided. Both programs are free of charge. The 12step yoga is led by instructor Kim Stoltzfus, who is registered in Yoga and the 12 Steps of Recovery (Y12SR). A Family Support Group, open to people of all ages who have a loved one at any stage of addiction, is offered at 1 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month and at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Depending on scheduling needs of those interested in attending, times and dates may be adjusted. People age 16 and up are invited to attend a wellness breakfast from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, to learn about mindfulness and self-care. DSAA plans to continue offering a wellness breakfast focused on various topics for the public on the first Saturday of each month. Additional programming from 10 to 11:30 a.m. will include Art Heals on second Saturdays, board games on third Saturdays, and craft days on fourth Saturdays. Registration is required. To sign up, interested individuals may email lexi.dsaa@gmail.com. To stay informed about DSAA events, readers may visit www.facebook.com/DonegalSubstance AbuseAlliance. moved into in 1957. Tragically, John died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at age 56 in 1958. Mary continued living in the schoolhouse-turned-home until 1985, when she moved to a retirement community. “The deed to my parents said that if they wanted to sell it at any time, the church would have the first chance to buy it,” explained Melvin. Erisman Mennonite Church bought the schoolhouse in 1985, and since that time it has been used for youth group and small group activities of the congregation. Elder Rich Nolt shared that in recent years, church members developed a vision for remodeling the structure back to its original glory - and then some. Nolt said the purpose for the renovated space is to foster connections and provide a cozy, welcoming meeting place beyond the typical church setting. Project coordinator Dennis Nissley said work will begin in mid-March and should be completed by August. Exterior renovation plans include replacing the current windows with larger windows resembling those that would have been part of the original schoolhouse and installing a bell tower. Interior renovations are planned to convert the main floor into an open space that will be used for events. The space will also include a handicapped-accessible restroom and entrances, as well as a small kitchen. Readers with questions about the project or open house may call the church at 717-653-4791. Erisman Mennonite Church holds weekly worship services on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. All are welcome.

Schoolhouse from pg 1 1939 to 1947. His ties to the building do not end there: His father, John Eby, went to school there before him and became ordained as a minister at Erisman Mennonite Church in 1945. Melvin can recall being dismissed from school on a Wednesday morning with his classmates to cross the dirt road - now South Erisman Road - to attend the meeting at the church where it was announced that his father would become the minister. At that time, the minister at Erisman was responsible for preaching on three Sundays each month. The fourth Sunday service only included Sunday school, Melvin said. Mennonite ministers were unsalaried in those days, so John also worked on the family farm and operated a plumbing business. Melvin and his siblings walked approximately 1 mile to the Lincoln School. “Our school was one of three schools in Rapho Township named for presidents who were killed in office: Lincoln, McKinley, and Garfield,” noted Melvin. He has good memories of teacher C. Emerson Rohrer instructing the group of 30 to 40 students and of recesses spent playing baseball. When the local grade schools consolidated in 1951, Melvin said, the Lincoln School building became available to purchase. For one year, the schoolhouse served as the home of Manheim Christian Day School, before the private school moved to its Lebanon Road location. Erisman Mennonite Church purchased the schoolhouse in 1952. The structure remained vacant until Melvin’s father and mother, Mary Eby, purchased it in 1955 and converted it into a dwelling that they

Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA), 120 College Ave., Mountville, will host former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee at its next Remember America Speaker Series event on Friday, April 17. The doors to the event venue, the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, will open at 6 p.m., with the premeal program beginning at 6:30 p.m. Gallery seating, for those who will attend only the featured presentation, will open at about 7:20 p.m. A VIP reception with Huckabee will be held prior to the evening’s festivities, with attendance by invitation only. Tickets to the reception are included with event sponsorship packages starting at the $2,500 level.

The theme for the event is “Living Stones of Liberty … for Such a Time as This.” During the program, DCA fifth-grader Jessie Krieger will give her Headmaster’s Oration Competition-winning oration, titled “Liberty Outdated?” “Jessie’s title matched well with the Remember America Speaker Series mission,” commented DCA marketing director Lisa Becker. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 1,600 attendees, certainly the largest audience Jessie has ever faced. “I’m really excited and really nervous all at the same time,” she said. DCA headmaster Michael Myers is looking forward to hosting Huckabee. “He is a great example of a Christian who took his Christian faith seriously, even to the point of

taking it to the political realm,” Myers commented. He described Huckabee as warm and welcoming, noting that those characteristics serve Huckabee well in his role as a pastor. “He’s a great exemplar of (passing on our faith to the next generation), and he can challenge us with credibility,” Myers added. “People tend to listen to him respectfully because he’s respectful.” The program will also include performances by DCA choral groups led by Lindsey Stauffer. While the singers are primarily in the upper grades, 15 members of the lower school’s Joyful Noise group will join them on stage. Additionally, a display of artifacts and media from the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center will be available for attendees to view. The center is opening on Independence Mall in Philadelphia this year and is sponsored by the American Bible Society. As the April 17 event is marking the 10th anniversary of the Remember America Speaker Series, a special video presentation that includes clips of previous speakers will be part of the program. Becker related that DCA has hosted more than 18,000 people at series events. “We completely credit God with the ability to walk with the community,” Becker said. “We’re blessed and grateful that Lancaster has embraced this event and the school,” Myers added. Tickets and sponsorships for the Remember America Speaker Series event are available at www.dayspringchristian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000.

Bears Top L-S, Fall to Milton Hershey in 5A Play by Eric Pyles

One week, seven days, 168 hours or 10,080 minutes, regardless of how you break it down it was the length of time needed before the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team could seek revenge for their L-L quarterfinal loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. The Pioneers bounced E-town from the league tournament, ending the Bears bid for an L-L title on February

10th and as fate would have it the two squads found themselves paired up for a rematch in the opening round of the District 3-5A tournament that got underway on February 17th. As round two between the two L-L squads unfolded, this one in Elizabethtown, the Pioneers appeared to be headed for a second straight win. The reason, L-S’s 15-13 first quarter edge coupled with a 13-12 second quarter advantage gave the

visitors a 28-25 lead at the break. Elizabethtown, going iron man with just the five starters seeing action, made adjustments at the half. The result was a 16-16 draw in the third that left E-town trailing by three heading into the final eight minutes. The Bears made their decisive move in the fourth thanks to the work of Elijah Eberly and Luke Pierson. The duo combined to score 14 of Elizabethtown’s 21 fourth quarter points which helped the Bears post a 21-12 edge in the frame. That run erased Lampeter-Strasburg’s threepoint advantage and gave the Bears a six-point, 62-56 win that not only exorcised the demons of the L-L loss but also secured a PIAA-5A playoff berth for Elizabethtown. Eberly capped his game high 24points with that seven-point fourth quarter and added 12 rebounds and three steals to his stellar game. Pierson also enjoyed a seven-point fourth quarter to finish with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Ryan Parise (five assists) and Patrick Gilhool chipped in with 10 points apiece while Alex O’Shea finished the scoring with the final five points. Elizabethtown’s opening round win gave the Bears another opportunity to seek revenge. This time the opponent was Milton Hershey with the Bears looking to avenge an 81-70 regular season loss to the Spartans that took place back on January 15th. Fate was not on the Bears side this time around as Milton Hershey took control early on their way to a 69-55 victory. That early control was slow to develop with the Spartans up just four

after the opening quarter. Things changed in the second as Milton Hershey used runs of 10-0, 7-0 and 50 to post a 22-9 edge in the frame taking a 38-21 lead into halftime. “They hit shots. We had the guys shooting the ball we wanted to shoot the ball, but they hit them,” said head coach Ricky Parise. “We executed our game plan. We took away Josh (Parra) in the first half and just give those guys credit for stepping up and hitting threes.” Milton Hershey remained in control throughout most of the third as well, pushing their lead to 54-26 just past the midway point of the quarter. Elizabethtown did not wilt despite the large Spartan lead, instead closing out the third on a 9-2 run that shrank the gap down to 21-points. The Bears continued their push over opening minutes of the fourth, ripping off a 90 run that was highlighted by Ryan Parise eclipsing the 1000-point barrier. The run put Milton Hershey on their heels and made it a 58-44 game but that was as close as Elizabethtown could get. The Spartans closed out the game with an 11-8 spurt for the 69-55 final. “I can’t tell you how proud I am that we fought back. We could have laid over and lost by 40 and we had it almost under 10 at one point and had Milton Hershey panicking a little bit. I couldn’t be more proud of my guys,” said Parise. “When you lose a district game its tough to celebrate, but obviously I couldn’t be more proud with how much effort and work he’s put in to get to that mark,” said Parise when asked about his son surpassing the 1000-point barrier.

Ryan Parise led the Bears in defeat with 16 points while Eberly added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. BOWLING The Bears’ bowling team continued their postseason journey with another visit to Clearview Lanes for the District 3 Championship on February 22nd. Seven different Bears, four on the boy’s side and three on the girl’s, took part in the qualifying round of the district festivities that included six qualifying games for each of the 72 entrants. “Kids did great, especially Eryn. I was proud of their efforts” said head coach Frank Telenko. “We are focused on the Regional team event

next weekend and looking to make a run at qualifying for States!!” The Eryn that Telenko was referring to was junior Eryn Moore who posted the third highest qualifying score among the 36 female bowlers thanks to games of 181, 193, 205, 216, 230 and 212. The 1237 series dropped Moore into the quarterfinals opposite Penn Manor’s Katelyn Welsh with Moore posting a 248-239 win. Moore’s title run was cut short with a 224-183 loss to Governor Mifflin’s Alyssa Breidegam. Alaina Telenko and Hannah Griffie joined Moore in the qualifying round See Bears pg 8

Chargers Stomp West Shore in District Quarters by Leah Sintic

With the CCAC Championship banner secured, the Mount Calvary club turned their attention to PIAA District III playoffs last week and embarked on a quest for the District crown; starting out strong with a resounding 77-40 triumph over the West Shore Bobcats in their quarterfinal faceoff. The contest took place on the Mount Calvary court last Thursday after the Chargers experienced a short reprieve due to a first-round bye. Those few days off, coupled with it being the third meeting against the Bobcats this season, could have been a detriment to the Chargers’ game, but the squad looked sharp

as ever opening up a 27-8 lead in the initial quarter. Chip Stambaugh led the initial offensive surge, putting in a dozen points in the first eight minutes, collecting a total of 15 before the half and adding seven rebounds to his resume. Defense played a major role in the lopsided outcome, as the Chargers’ intensity halted the Bobcats from the get-go. “We focused on two main things, pressuring their guards full court and passing the ball to score quickly,” noted head coach Kory Pruner. Hunter Stewart was the night’s high scorer accruing a total of 16, including a 100 percent effort from the line going three-for-three. Aidan Masters tallied 12 points.

Harrison Crick and Brett Taylor led the team in assists, dishing out three apiece, and Hyo Sugita extended the Bobcat defense as an outside threat, netting a pair of three-point buckets. Eleven different Charger players put points on the scoreboard in the runaway win, and the team took the time to focus on some key aspects of the game as they expect the caliber of competition to increase heading deeper into the post season. “We wanted to put together a complete game defensively and refine our offensive possessions so that we continued to improve and not regress,” emphasized Pruner. “At this point in the season it’s all

about getting better even as the level of competition also improves.” The hunt for a District championship continues with a semifinal matchup against Lancaster County Christian, again hosted by the Chargers, with the victor advancing to the District Championship game slated for Friday, February 28th at the Giant Center in Hershey. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Chargers hit a wall in their first conflict of the District III tournament on Friday February 21st, falling behind Lebanon Catholic by a final score of 56-29, rerouting their District tournament track, but keeping their PIAA tournament hopes alive. “We didn’t play as well as we

needed to on either side of the ball,” noted head coach Phil Ferrari. “They are a well-coached team that has several good players that can hurt you, and we didn’t do enough to take away their strengths.” Seventeen points from Kenzie

Baughman kept the Chargers in contention, but with three Lebanon Catholic players notching double digits, the MC club wasn’t able to keep pace. Baughman took 11 trips to the See Chargers pg 8

with Telenko finishing 24th and Griffie 36th. Telenko posted rounds of 176, 180, 145, 159, 171 and 160 while Griffie bowled games of 204, 124, 164, 147, 112 and 173. Andrew Telenko posted the highest qualifying total on the boy’s side with games of 203, 184, 213, 205, 173 and 195 leading to a 1173 total and a 15th place finish. Daniel Eberle finished 40-pins off Telenko’s pace with games of 246, 168, 159, 167, 193 and 199 putting the sophomore in 20th place one week after finishing second at the L-L tournament. Zach Wentzel put together the 25th best qualifying score with games of 171, 185, 185, 182, 151 and 204 for a 1078 total. Ben Davis was the final Bear to take part in the district championships, finishing 32nd after bowling games of 167, 190, 147, 194, 135 and 175 for a 1008 series. Up next for the Bears is the Eastern PA Regional Championships on February 28th and 29th with action at both Leisure Lanes and 222 Dutch Lanes. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL A simple trip to York on February 18th brought a quick end to the girls’ 2019-2020 basketball season thanks to a 45-21 loss to York Suburban in a District 3-5A opening round battle. The Lady Trojans held Elizabethtown to single digit scoring in all four quarters with the bulk of the damage coming in the opening half. It was

line and converted nine of them to shoot 82 percent. The early round loss to the Beavers will bump the Mount Calvary girls out of the running for the District Championship, but puts them into the 3A consolation bracket this week with hopes of working their way to a top five finish that would still qualify them for a berth in state playoffs. Seven Sorrows School and Parish in Middletown participated in the annual national Catholic Schools Week celebration, which ended in early February. In her remarks to the school families and parish, principal Rebecca Harvey outlined the school’s philosophy of education and highlighted its Catholic identity. Catholic schools aim to address formation of the intellect, character, and spirituality. Following a kickoff Mass and spaghetti dinner, students were provided many opportunities throughout the week to live the week’s theme: “Catholic Schools. Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Students contributed to collections for missions and Scholastic’s All for Books campaign as well as the Middletown Food Bank through an effort sponsored by the National Junior Honor Society. The student body was visited by local emergency services personnel and Critter Connection. Other highlights throughout the week included the school spelling bee, a book fair, a literacy night, a student vs. faculty volleyball match, and a Roller Skate Night. The school also announced this year’s spring drama, “The Enchanted Bookshop.” Seven Sorrows School offers two-, three-, and five-day prekindergarten half days as well as three- and five-day prekindergarten full days. The Principle Approach is America’s historic, classical Christian method of education that seeks to prepare young people to be servants, scholars, and statesmen in the constitutional federal republic.

The school’s Principle Approach curriculum includes many in-depth field study experiences, including time in Plymouth, Mass., to study the Pilgrims; Boston to study John Adams’ family; Gettysburg; the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; and New York City. As a culmination to the Principle Approach education, seniors travel to Israel for a nearly two-week field study. Dayspring offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Lower School and Upper School sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, track, cross-country, and golf. A partnership with McCaskey High School in Lancaster permits

Since 1986, more than 50 members of Palm have undertaken 50 hours of training to become Stephen Ministers. Palm usually has an average three to five active Stephen Ministers at any given time. Each meets weekly with someone who is experiencing a life crisis or challenge, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, hospitalization, the loss of a job, loneliness, or relocation.

through the power of Lions International, the world. The Lions place a special emphasis on providing vision services locally to those who cannot afford it and providing support to young people through educational and sports award programs. The club also supports the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, as well as the Elizabethtown and Rheems fire departments. Locally, nationally and internationally, Lions Club members are advocates for people who are blind or vision impaired and those who have disablities. They also strive to strengthen their community through teamwork, partnership, and fellowship. Each year, the Elizabethtown Lions Club performs several service projects and holds fundraising activities to enable those projects. In May, the club awards scholarships to several outstanding high school seniors at EAHS. The Elizabethtown Lions Club meets at 6:15 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at the Elizabethtown Fire Department.

Jesus promised to bring peace into our lives. Through His suffering, death and resurrection, we can enter into a new realm of calmness and peace that the world does not understand. May we learn to trust Him in a very unsettling time in our world.

I am leaving you with a gift --- peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give you is a gift the world cannot give you. Passage – John 14: 27-29

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) anticipates granting two $2,000 scholarships to Lancaster County high school seniors in 2020. Applications will be accepted from students continuing their education in the 2020-21 school year with the intent of majoring in a curriculum that focuses on natural resources and/or conservation. Examples of acceptable programs of study include environmental sciences, wildlife and/or fisheries biology, environmental resource management, or other related programs. Acceptable programs should lead to an advanced degree (two-year associate degree or four-year baccalaureate degree). The completed application must be received in the LCCD office by Tuesday, March 31. The scholarship committee of LCCD will conduct a review of the applicants. The basis for selection will be determined on past performance and activities, current school and community involvement, future purpose and direction, and communication skills. The scholarship committee, prior to the final selection, will interview the top candidates. An announcement of the successful candidates will be made by Friday, May 15. The scholarships are made possible through an initial Ann Brown bequest, an annual fundraiser at the district banquet, and contributions from individuals. For more information and to obtain a scholarship application, readers may visit www.lancasterconservation.org or call the office at 717874-2559.

Sandi Bush, a volunteer with the Community Cupboard, submitted the donation request to Wegmans, and Ann Sturm, service/merchandising manager, arranged the donation. The Elizabethtown Community Cupboard serves an average of 155 families a month. Instead of handing out boxes or bags of food, the organization offers a shopping experience through which clients are able to choose products in each food category. According to director Melissa Rhoads, the new carts will replace carts that have been in use for years. In 2019, Wegmans provided more than $3.4 million in
