Building champions on and off the field

The Rheems Athletic Association’s mission is to support youth sports programs, but the benefits of the nonprofit go much deeper.

“We’re trying to create a place for children and youth to be able to participate in athletics; be safe; have fun; and have something to do that ultimately builds teamwork, resilience and confidence,” said Jon Norman, president of the group. “All the things kids do in sports are the things that translate to real life: communication, how to work together and especially resilience. Sometimes in life, you lose. How can you handle that? And on the other side, how can you handle success gracefully?”

The association has been around for decades, and it offers sports programs for children from kindergarten through 12th grade. Sports include soccer, softball, volleyball, field hockey, rugby and lacrosse.

“We want to help kids make friends, boost their self-confidence and learn to be part of a team.”

Norman estimates that about 500 youths participate in association programs, and players come from across the county. Soccer and softball are the most popular

sports in the organization.

“This organization is run 100% by volunteers,” said Norman, who noted that his three children have all participated in the programs offered by the Rheems Athletic Association. “Every sport could use help from volunteers. Every sport could use some extra coaching and field help. Anybody who has a sport they like and care about should reach out to us and let us know.”

Along with volunteers for specific sports, the organization also relies on sponsorships for teams and donations, which cover the cost of insurance as well as maintenance of fields and equipment.

“We do our best to keep our costs as low as possible for our families who participate,” Norman said. “We’re not

For just over two years, community organization Advoz worked with middle and high school students in the Elizabethtown Area School District to reduce conflicts and promote restorative practices.

Although the Lancaster-based organization’s participation in the district ended after grant funding ran out, Advoz saw positive results from collaborating with the students, and it’s now looking to expand Advoz partnerships with other districts in the county.

From Elizabethtown, Advoz staff members worked with ninth-grade students in the School District of Lancaster to highlight mitigation of classroom conflict and improve communication skills.

“Most people don’t understand taxes,” said Cliff Mast, site coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Paradise location at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East. “We as a group (of volunteers) work on de-mystifying them or just being a calming presence.”

Mast explained that many clients who come to VITA for free tax preparation services feel a lot of anxiety about completing their taxes. “Our goal is to say,

“We focused on an introduction of conflict skills, ‘I’ messages, and the various conflict styles of different people,”

‘It’s alright. We will take care of this. We will help walk you through it.’”

Mast, who has been a volunteer with VITA for nearly a decade, said that the Paradise site, which opened at the end of January, is one of 15 sites located throughout the county that are staffed with volunteer tax preparers. Locally, free tax preparation through VITA is available at two locations in Elizabethtown: Alliance Church, 425 Cloverleaf Road, as well as Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive.

The Rheems Athletic Association offers programs in a variety of sports, including softball.

shared Krista Rittenhouse, interim executive director and director of restorative practices for the organization. “We worked on community building. We believe if we don’t trust each other and we don’t care about each other, we’re not going to engage well with each other.”

Advoz also supports the peer mediation program in the School District of Lancaster, providing a facilitator in the school to oversee student mediators who have been trained by Advoz.

“Students are really seeing the value of this program,” Rittenhouse said. “It’s mitigating violence in the hallways, streets and after school, even on social media. Students are learning that if they handle conflict in the supportive environment of mediation, that spills out into how they handle conflict when they aren’t being supervised.”

Advoz also works with Sacred Heart School in Lancaster, providing services one day a week for the small private school.

The goal of Advoz’s collaboration with school districts is to reduce the need for low-level offenders to be referred out to authorities such as district judges.

“They can report to our embedded school resource officers, and

they still have consequences for their actions, but we are focused on repairing and maintaining relationships,” Rittenhouse explained.

“Our students are going to absorb their education, and engagement is best when they feel supportive, they feel safe, and their brain is not in an activated state.”

In other words, she noted, restorative practices help students stay in their “learning brain,” not in their “survival brain.”

“We are all about turning conflict into conversation,” she said. “All of the programs we have are intended to create structures to remove barriers to having hard conversations, to empower collaboration and inclusive conversation so everyone has a voice in determining a solution that works for everyone.”

Formed in 2017, Advoz was created from a merger of Lancaster Mediation Center and the Center for Community Peacemaking. Those organizations have roots that go back 40 years, so the depth of knowledge and resources is strong, Rittenhouse said.

Advoz concentrates on restorative practices, an umbrella term for the values and guiding principles that include collaborating, inclusive learning, community

School District of Lancaster students participate in a peer

building and response to harm. Restorative justice comes into play when harm has been caused.

“Now we’re in a subset of restorative practices that requires accountability, making things right,” she said.

According to statistics provided by Advoz, schools that employ restorative practices see positive results. Graduation rates increase, truancy decreases and suspensions also decline. Teachers report that restorative justice practices help them build caring relationships with their students and make a positive impact on school climate, ultimately leading to an increase in safety.

“Change comes when students have a sense of feeling connected and invested in their community,” she said, adding that it’s not a quick fix. “Restorative practices often get misrepresented because it takes

three to five years of intentionality to see a culture shift and to see skills change.”

Schools that choose to work with Advoz should be prepared to put in work up front to see big results.

“It takes more time on the front end to get a program going,” she said. “You have to give up instruction time in the beginning, but you gain it back when students are engaged, inclusive and collaborative. When students are actively being invited to engage in their learning, they are less likely to be disruptive in the classroom.”

If a school is interested in working with Advoz, Rittenhouse suggests reaching out for an initial consultation.

“We offer multiple ways to support schools,” she said. “We have training for individual staff, for teams, for direct facilitation.”

The organization also works with businesses on conflict resolution and team building.

“We want our organization to be connected to the community and community owned,” Rittenhouse said. “We believe if people are using these strategies in their own lives, in their work and their homes, that has a trickle effect into the community.”

More information about hours or making an appointment, which is recommended, is available at www.uwlanc .org/vita. Individuals may also schedule by dialing 211. Services at the college are provided by contacting the location directly at 717-361-3752. Pop-up sites may be available as well. In Lancaster County, VITA services are provided through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the United Way. “(VITA services) are available to anyone with a household income under $70,000,” said Mast, who explained that further parameters exclude taxes for rental properties and S corporations. “We don’t do business returns,” he said, but then added that Schedule C taxes for a side business would fall within VITA’s wheelhouse. VITA will complete federal, state, and local tax forms as well as the PA-1000 form for those who qualify. “That is an extra rebate up to $1,000,” he said.

According to Mast, the service starts with an intake form, which can be filled out online or may be sent ahead of the appointment by email. “We have everyone fill out an intake name, address, who is in the house, W-2, 1099, retirement income, etc.,” he explained. “That helps us to interview and be sure we have all the correct information.” Mast explained that taxes are done in person during a session that generally lasts less than an hour. “We enter information into software, and (documentation) goes back to (the client),” he said.

All VITA tax preparers are volunteers who are trained by the IRS to complete basic returns and are tested yearly. Mast recently received his enrolled agent certification,

which he noted is the highest certification that the IRS bestows on a tax preparer. “It means I have learned about personal tax and business tax returns and repre senting people in front of the IRS,” he stated. “I got a lot of training this last year to earn that.” Mast recently opened Masterpiece Tax in Leola.

Mast said that in 2024, volunteers at the Paradise site completed 400 returns. “That’s a huge amount of volunteer time,” said Ellie Green, communications director with The Factory. “That’s at least 400 hours, not to mention the time spent to get the certifications,” she said. “It’s an incredible gift to the community.”

Readers who would like to volunteer with VITA may visit the aforementioned website and click on the “Volunteer” tab.

He emphasized that any youth who wants to participate in a sport should not let financial barriers get in the way.

“We have some financial help if necessary for any kids who want to play,” he stated. “We want to find a way to get them to play sports, and we’ll get you set up. Just reach out to us.”

The organization practices on fields and courts throughout the area, Norman said, adding, “Every piece of grass, every turf - we find it, and we will use it.”

The Rheems Athletic Association has a 10-member board, and each sport is led by a commissioner.

“We’re a team,” Norman said. “We’re all a group of folks that care a ton about this, and we all work together well.”

He also noted that the Rheems Athletic Association complements

other sports programs in the area.

“We don’t do sports like wrestling, football or cheerleading, but we work together with the Etown Bears Club, who provides those sports,” he said.

Joining a sport through the Rheems Athletic Association provides a chance to learn new skills, have fun and gain some playing experience before students get to high school, Norman remarked. But above all, the organization’s vision is to help youths develop character through participation in sports.

“Our focus is youth sports, but our goal is for the kids to safely have fun and to grow to become good humans who contribute to society,” Norman said. “We want to help kids make friends, boost their self-confidence and learn to be part of a team.”

Men of Iron will host inaugural 5K

“The mission of Men of Iron is to change a culture one man at a time through one-on-one mentorship, which focuses on the Core Five: faith, family, friends, fitness and finances,” said Josh Henson, vice president of generosity for the Manheim-based organization.

To help people meet the fitness goal, as well as provide opportunities for fellowship, the nonprofit will host its first Men of Iron 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, March 15. The event will be held at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Day-of registration will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the race will start at 9 a.m.

“We wanted to create an event for the community that would give people an opportunity to learn more about Men of Iron and what we do,” said Steve Glick, director of marketing, explaining the impetus for this inaugural race. “We spent some time brainstorming and decided a 5K is great because we hope to not only have runners and walkers participate, but also hope they bring their families along to cheer them on. This would give us the opportunity to connect with families in Manheim and the surrounding community.”

The race will offer opportunities for anyone who is interested in

participating, Henson said.

“This is an accessible event for every fitness level,” he shared. “Come out and meet some great people, get some exercise or scratch your competitive itch and hear about an organization that is changing lives and impacting families.”

After the race, people are encouraged to stick around for food and fellowship.

“We are working hard to secure post-race vendors, but we will definitely have both coffee and food available to purchase for post-race runners and spectators too,” said Christine Lehman, events coordinator. “We will also have fruit and additional water available for our runners once they finish the course.”

Men of Iron began in 2006 at Victory Church in Lancaster. At the time, the organization had 20 members - 10 proteges and 10 mentors. The organization’s focus from day one has been on mentorship, with proteges and mentors meeting face-to-face to encourage accountability and promote spiritual growth.

Now headquartered in Manheim, Men of Iron has impacted 3,500 men in southcentral Pennsylvania, as well as in North Carolina and Florida.

“Many of our resources have

been used across the country,” shared Lehman, “from our free online devotionals to our smallgroup-based men’s ministry materials.”

Glick encourages men who are interested to learn more about the organization.

“Men of Iron is for any man who wants to grow as a husband, father and leader,” he said. “Through free resources, small groups and one-to-one mentorship, we equip men to know God and know their purpose. We would love to help any man out there take their next step.”

An easy first step, said Henson, is registering for the 5K.

“Men of Iron is a nonprofit faithbased organization that relies on the support of like-minded partners,” he said. “Proceeds from the event will help us operationally

Swim team posts registration

The Mount Joy Lions Swim Team has opened registration for another summer of competitive swimming.

The team is open to swimmers from the Donegal and Elizabethtown communities and surrounding areas. The team seeks to provide opportunities for children to partici-

pate in competitive swimming while cultivating lifelong friendships, individual growth, and teamwork.

For more than 30 years, the team has been a part of the Lancaster Summer Swim League.

The swim team season runs from mid-May through the end of

July. The regular season consists of seven dual meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and a few optional invitational swim meets.

expand our impact.” Lehman hopes for a good turnout for the race and is excited about the opportunity to share the organization’s mission.

“Men of Iron is committed to changing a culture, one man at a time,” she said. “It’s our mission, and we take that responsibility seriously. We work hard to intentionally create products and services to equip men to become godly leaders in their homes, their place of employment and their communities. We look forward to making connections with more families in our community and invite everyone to join us for our inaugural 5K.”

Preregistration for the race will end on Wednesday, March 12. For more information, visit https:// menofiron.org/5k.

The regular season concludes with a divisional championship meet, and then all Lancaster Summer Swim League teams gather for the league championship meet. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards without assistance before joining the team. For more information and to register between Sunday, March 2, and Saturday, May 3, visit www .mountjoyswim.com.
