The organization will host A Dinner and a Movie on Friday, March 26. The event will feature a drive-through meal available from 5 to 7 p.m. at the center, 95 S. GEARS To Hold Eggstravaganza BY CATHY MOLITORIS

EARS will hold its annual Eggstravaganza on Saturday, March 27, at Poplar Street Park, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The event will begin at 9 a.m. Although the setup will be a little different than other years, the event will still feature all of the fun and holiday spirt of previous events, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “This year we’re not doing all the activities we have done in the past,” she stated. “ We have really revamped the event to follow COVID guidelines.” The Eggstravaganza will feature an egg hunt with staggered start times for age groups. Children ages 2 and under will kick off the event, with hunts at 9 and 9:30 a.m. Children ages 3 to 6 will begin at 10 and 10:30 a.m. Those ages 7 to 9 will begin at 11 and 11:30 a.m., and those ages 10 to 12 will start at noon and 12:30 p.m. The event will

“This year we’re not doing all the activities we have done in the past,” she stated. “We have really revamped the event to follow COVID guidelines.”

Eberly said a disc jockey will be on hand during the event to play music and add to the festivities. “We’re going to have groups wait in their socially distanced areas before they begin, and while they’re waiting, the DJ will play fun songs to get them ready to go,” she explained. The Easter Bunny will also be at the event, with a photo booth set up for free pictures. Nate Diegel, program coordinator for GEARS, said there was never any plan to cancel this year’s event, even though the structure will be a little different. “It’s going to give that sense of normalcy,” he remarked. “It’s still going to be fun. There are still going to be great prizes, and, of course, there is going to be tons of candy. It’s something the community looks forward to every year, and we’re going to be doing it in a safe way.” For more information on the Eggstravaganza or to register, readers may visit www.getintogears.org.

HARTZ Physical Therapy Creates Charitable Arm BY ANN MEAD ASH

At the end of 2020, HARTZ Physical Therapy, with five locations in Lancaster County, formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit called HARTZ Physical Therapy Charitable Fund. The mission for the new organization is “to strengthen our community through philanthropic support for essential charitable organizations in Lancaster County.” That goal provides only a glimpse into the HARTZ story, which began more than 20 years ago when Brian Hartz, a Lititz native, and his wife,

noting that the new location for the event will also help control crowd size. “We are also limiting it to people who live in the areas GEARS serves.” Those areas are Elizabethtown Borough, Mount Joy Township, West Donegal Township and Conoy Township.

decided to do that again this year,” said Laurie Shepler, executive director of Cornerstone. The meal will feature Harvey’s Bar-B-Q stuffed chicken breast, green beans, mashed potatoes, applesauce, a roll and butter, a dessert from Pies Galore and a beverage. “People can stay in their cars, and we’ll put the meals in their trunk or back seat, and we’ll give them a link to the video presentation and to the silent auction,” Shepler noted. “For the video, Anne Beiler of Auntie Anne’s will be at our center earlier in the day for a tour to get to know us a little bit better, and then we’ll show her visit as well as updates about Cornerstone, interviews with some of the kids who come to Cornerstone and Anne speaking about her life story.” Following the presentation, the silent auction will open and will run through Saturday, April 3. “There will be lots of gift certificates to local events and experiences, food items, jewelry and lots more,” Shepler stated.

The winning bid for each item will be matched by community donations. “So, if the top bid is $200, that means Cornerstone gets $400,” Shepler explained, adding that this event is taking the place of the organization’s typical fundraising banquet. “This special event is our largest annual fundraiser,” she remarked.

“While we cannot come together at a banquet location, we know that our community knows how to come together in generous support of youths and the youth center.” Proceeds from the event help Cornerstone continue to serve the Elizabethtown community. “We provide programming six

We offer things like basketball and rock climbing, and we focus on things like building healthy relationships.” Shepler emphasized that Cornerstone could not do what it does without community support for events like this benefit. “The support of the community allows us to provide a safe, loving environment for teens who desperately need that in their lives,” she stated. “It really is making a difference in the lives of kids in our community.” For more information on A Dinner and a Movie and to register, readers may visit www.cornerstoneetown .org/benefit2021.

Brian Hartz (left) and Amy Hartz (center) of HARTZ Physical Therapy drop off a food donation to Amy Bartholomew (right), partner ambassador at Water Street Mission, as part of the April 2019 Feed the Need Food Drive. The donation is one of many that prompted the Hartzes to found a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Amy, originally from Mechanicsburg, met while attending Rider University in New Jersey. In 2000, they opened HARTZ Physical Therapy in downtown Lititz with a vision of creating a work atmosphere that could make a difference. “We wanted to empower our employees and give back to our community,” noted Brian. “(The idea was to) put the focus on employees first to mentor them professionally and personally.” The couple also wanted to impact the area. “There is much need in Lancaster County,” said Brian. “We started early on trying to incentivize our staff and promote community engagement.” One employee who was inspired was physical therapy assistant Wendy Enck, who has been with the practice for 19 years. Enck recalled how Brian would encourage employees to participate in area 5K running events. “The more (5Ks) we did, we thought, ‘We could hold this ourselves,’” said Enck, who researched how to organize a 5K and then became the race director for the first HARTZ Physical Therapy Fall Blast held at John Bonfield Elementary School in the fall of 2004. “The course is great for beginners,” said Enck. “It’s not very hilly.” In the years since the first 5K was held, the run has raised more than $240,000 for local charities. Local organizations that have benefited include Aaron’s Acres, Girls on the Run, and Power Packs Project. Brian noted that organizations that benefit from the Fall Blast are chosen based on applications received from the charities. “We narrow it down to three (applicants), and then we present those to our entire staff (for a vote),” said Brian. “Amy and I don’t make these decisions. Our entire staff is engaged.”

In addition to the Fall Blast, HARTZ has partnered with Water Street Mission (WSM) and matched employee contributions to the Lancaster County Foundation Extraordinary Give, in addition to other fundraisers. According to Amy, one idea behind founding the organization was to consolidate efforts. “The 501(c)(3) is to bring all our community engagement ideas under one umbrella,” she said, noting that it is important to be able to support charities that staff members feel

Manheim Central’s Rocco Daugherty. Walters’ lone setback came in the semifinals opposite Central Dauphin’s Ethan Pea. The senior rebounded with wins over Solanco’s Blaine Plastino and Donegal’s Joel Grillo to grab third. Robinson followed a similar path in the 145-pound bracket. He started with a 15-0 tech fall win over Lampeter-Strasburg’s Alex Cardwell. A semifinal loss to Reagan Lefevre (Hempfield) pushed Robinson into the consolation bracket. There he took out Solanco’s Justin McCauley before falling to Andrew McClune of Warwick in the consolation finals, securing fourth place in the process. Also qualifying for the tournament was Austin Reitmeyer (106), Nathan Thomas (126), Ryan Findley (132), Nick Smith (138), Jake Rudy (152), Wyatt Mummau and Hayden Haver (160) all bowed out after back-to-back losses. BOWLING The Elizabethtown bowling team opened their postseason journey on February 17th with a trip to Rocky Springs Entertainment Center for the Lancaster-Lebanon League team championship. The Bears stay was quick as they dropped their opening match opposite Penn Manor by a 4-3 final. E-town, paced by strong opening games from Alaina Telenko (228) and Daniel Eberle (222) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Comets stormed back to take games two and three and lock up the victory. Buoyed by their 1012-914 game one win, the Bears claimed the overall pin count 2808-2744, picking up the final team point and setting the 4-3 final. Telenko was the lone 600bowler, adding games of 187 and 196 for a 611 series. Eberle followed with a 578 series while Zach Wentzel (558), Eryn Moore (537) and Zach Deardorff (558) rounded out five scorers. There is an old saying about second place being first loser, but that phrase isn’t used in Elizabethtown, especially on the bowling team. The reason, Eberle picked up his second straight runner-up finish at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Boys Singles Championships on February 24th. The junior fell short against Warwick’s Tyler Miller 269-187 in the championship match. Eberle advanced with stepladder final wins over Wentzel (244-194), Conestoga Valley’s Robbie Jack (197-191) and Cedar Crest’s Darren Zombro III (269-200). He earned his place in the stepladder finals largely on his work in the six-game opening round where his 1014 was good enough for fourth. Eberle struggled a bit in the second round, slipping a few spots to seventh but still well inside the stepladder final cut, setting up his run to silver. Wentzel finished ninth in the opening round with a 961 but a came on in the second round, finishing sixth. That finish combined with Eberle’s second round slide set up the all-Elizabethtown match that went to Eberle. Deardorff’s opening round 885 had him just inside the top 20, in 17th place while a strong second round pushed him to 14th in the final standings, a mere 84 pins outside the finals.
