Within has also partnered with HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, and Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, which both offer dental hygiene programs. General practitioner dentists and dental hygienists are needed to volunteer their time and services at the clinic. Nissly said that Hope Within Dental is also in need of specialists, such as oral surgeons, endodontists, and periodontists, who are willing to have
patients referred to their offices for treatment as needed. Dental professionals who are willing to volunteer in any capacity are encouraged to call Hope Within Ministries at 717-3679797, email tina.nissly@hopewithin .org, or visit www.hopewithin.org. Thanks to the generosity of numerous businesses and individuals who have donated finances, equipment, supplies, and time, McAlester and Nissly said the dental wing is ready to go. However, additional donations will be accepted as there are still a few “wish list” items, such as an autoclave, that the organization would like to purchase. “Dentistry is expensive to run. MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., will hold its 12th annual MiniTHON on Friday to Saturday, March 6 to 7, in the high school’s Daubert Gymnasium to benefit Four Diamonds. MiniTHON is a student-run organization that plans fundraising events during the school year that culminate with a 12-hour dance marathon at the high school patterned after Penn State’s THON. This year’s fundraising goal for EAHS is $90,000. Senior Erin Barton and junior Angelina Hemsch are cochairs of the student-led philanthropic initiative. The slogan for this year is “Make This Cancer’s Last Rodeo.” Starting at 7 p.m. on March 6, student dancers will participate in competitions, dance, sing, and play games all night while standing and patiently waiting for the final fundraising reveal at 7 a.m. on March 7. New this year, there will be a bunny room sponsored by the FFA. The local community is invited to support the cause by
making a donation, becoming a sponsor, purchasing a Light of Hope lantern, and/or attending community hours. Community hours have been set for 8 to 11 p.m. on March 6. During community hours, separate admission donation amounts have been set for adults and for students, with children age 5 and under admitted for free. Proceeds will go toward the fundraising goal. Four Diamonds families are invited to attend as honorary guests. Attendees may come dressed in cowboy attire and may purchase a lantern to commemorate someone they know affected by cancer. Community hours will conclude with a Lights of Hope Luminaria Ceremony at 10:30 p.m in the high school’s main lobby, where all the names on lanterns will be read. Last year, EAHS exceeded $85,000, with 100% of the money raised donated to Four Diamonds to support pediatric cancer research and help families of children with cancer take care of medical costs. Four Diamonds-sponsored families
never see a cancer-related medical bill during treatment through Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. Mini-THON has a special connection to Elizabethtown. Decades ago, 11-year-old Chris Millard, a student at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, was diagnosed with cancer. While battling, he wrote a story about a knight who had to use the four diamonds of Courage, Wisdom, Strength, and Honesty to help him overcome the evil sorceress. After Chris passed away, the Millard family shared his story and created Four Diamonds in 1973 to assist families with children battling cancer. The organization reports that 70% of all funds raised go to research and finding a cure for pediatric cancer. One of the first patients to benefit from Four Diamonds 40 years ago was from Elizabethtown and is now a physician. For more information, readers may visit the Mini-THON event page at www.etownschools.org or contact adviser Ken Boland at ken_boland@etownschools.org or 717-367-1533.

Every year, youths from towns across the country participate in 4-H clubs, including a club in Mount Joy. This local club is seeking volunteers, who are necessary to its operation. The 4-H youth organization aims to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility, and life skills in 8- to 18-year-olds
projects that youth members can select to complete. Topics include foods, sewing and beekeeping. These projects are led by volunteers from the community who specialize in their respective activity’s area. Project work is completed at meetings held separately from the club meetings, with dates and times dependent on the activity and the volunteer leader’s schedule. In Mount Joy, Jess Graybill is the calligraphy project leader. Graybill joined 4-H as a club member when she was 8 and became a volunteer when she became too old for club membership. She has taught the calligraphy project for 13 years. Joy Helsel became a leader for the first time last year after being involved in the Mount Joy 4-H Community Club for eight years because of her children’s membership. Her first activity as a project leader was to guide participants in the candy making project. Each year, new projects are added, and returning projects need new leaders. New volunteers may join at any time, and they may choose their level of involvement within the club. To learn more, readers may contact Katina Musser at katmusser @comcast.net.

Mt. Calvary Earns First District Crown
by Leah Sintic
Punching their ticket to the PIAA District III 1A finals for only the second time in school history, the Mount Calvary Chargers claimed the crown for the first time on Friday, February 28, fending off third-seeded Halifax High School, 71-56, at the Giant Center in Hershey to be named 2020 District III Champions. “It means so much, celebrated
senior captain Jack Hilsher. “We’ve been talking about winning in the Giant Center for years, and we finally did it. It was such a cool experience and one we won’t forget. The early minutes of the contest belied the eventual 15-point triumph as the Chargers struggled to find their rhythm and trailed Halifax, 11-7, after the first quarter. In fact, it wasn’t until a mere five minutes remained in the first half that

Mount Calvary held their first lead of the contest, when Aidan Masters pushed the ball up the court and found Hunter Stewart cutting into the paint to secure a layup and the lead, 16-14. Stewart’s first half contributions, both in scoring and rebounds, kept the Chargers in the contest during their early scoring drought, and he finished Photo by Cheri Sine the night as MC’s high scorer tallying Chip Stambaugh grabs a rebound in front of Halifax’ Nathan 19, and earned a double-double by Blasick in the Chargers’ 71-56, district-championship victory. adding 12 rebounds. “We needed momentum and points, and I saw opportunities so I took them, explained Stewart. “It felt great, but it wasn’t the main thing that I was focusing on, the junior went on to say referring to the overall team mentality that permeated the performance.

Damian Rutt’s second quarter efforts included eight of his total 13 points and were a major factor in narrowing the gap before heading to the midway break. Despite the glimpse of what was to come in the latter half, Halifax still had a bit more in the tank and managed to edge ahead, 29-26, with a buzzer beater at the half. The Wildcats’ first half success was due largely in part to their primary threat, Nathan Blasick, who finished the contest with 26 of Halifax’ points. “When we faced adversity, this team fought back, held each other up and pushed each other to play better, credited head coach Kory Pruner. “Guys off the bench stepped up in the first half
when we dealt with foul trouble, and we managed to survive a nervous start. A completely different Charger team seized the court in the third quarter and rocketed ahead, outscoring the Wildcats 25-9 in the period. “It was really just these boys focusing on playing our style of basketball: gritty defense, team-first offense and push the pace, Pruner went on to say. “Halifax was not going to quit because they are also a great team of fighters, so we knew we needed to stay focused and disciplined until the end. Contributions came from all over the MC squad; Masters and Hilsher each notched 11 points apiece joining Stewart and Rutt in double-digit figures.
When Halifax focused their defensive efforts on Masters, MC’s year-long high scorer, he created other opportunities, dishing out eight assists, resulting in key buckets from freshman Brett Taylor (nine points), and Harrison Crick (six points). In the fourth quarter, the concentrated Halifax defense didn’t allow Masters a field goal, but he capitalized his time at the line converting five-ofsix free throws. “I’m so proud of this team. God has blessed our team with a district championship and He has ultimately blessed these young men with a memory that lasts a lifetime. All year we have strived to be a team that puts God, team and others before ourselves, and I believe

Chargers from pg 10 that was on display,” concluded Pruner. In order to earn their way into the title match, the MC team took down the Lions of Lancaster County Christian in a resounding 49-29 triumph in the previous Monday’s semifinal showdown. The clash started out as a defensive one, registering a low-scoring 18-11 Charger advantage at the half, before the MC club opened up a more comfortable lead in the second half of play. “We focused on our defensive success to start the game and continued to ask them to have more ball movement on offense to get better shots,” explained Pruner. “LCCS was able to slow down our offense by forcing outside shots, but we also did not look to push the ball enough. Once we began to do those things, we were able to extend a lead.” Senior Chip Stambaugh continued his aggressive post-season performance, leading all scorers with 16, scoring in each of the four quarters,
netting six-of-nine from the line, and pulling down 11 rebounds. Stewart was the second Charger athlete to notch double digits, joining Stambaugh with a double-double, securing 11 points and 12 boards. Masters added eight points to the Charger tally, a quieter contribution from the junior who averages 18 points per game, but Masters’ influence on the outcome was also felt in a supply of nine rebounds, five assists, and two steals. With the Lions’ defense forcing the long-range shot, MCCS responded by sinking five momentum-boosting, three-point buckets, two apiece from Masters and Hilsher, and one from Evan Barnes. While the Chargers faced their share of missed shots, their tenacity on the boards gave them ample secondchance opportunities and they outrebounded the Lions 47-24 collectively. “We almost doubled their shot attempts due to great rebounding and forcing turnovers,” pointed out Pruner.
“But the story of the night was the defensive effort, as we shut down their two leading scorers.” That intense defense held the Lions biggest offensive threat, Charles Hall, to 10 points and the rest of the LCCS squad to single digit contributions. The two-win week brings the Chargers’ victory count to 25, winning their last 21 consecutive contests, sporting an overall 25-2 record and they’re not done yet. Systematically checking off their goals, the Chargers now possess the CCAC tournament and District III titles and have set their sights on the PIAA tournament, hunting for a win at the state level. Their first test will come on March 6 against District I opponent North Penn Liberty High School. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Last Tuesday’s District III consolation playoff match against Veritas Academy turned out to be the end of a successful season for the Lady Chargers, halting their post-season run with a loss at home, 34-28, capping the year with an overall record of 18-9. Kenzie Baughman’s 14 points and
composure at the line, shooting seven-of-nine, kept the Lady Chargers within reach during the contest, but despite a fourth quarter surge of 18 points that narrowed the gap, the squad came up just short. Defensively, Kara Locker and Julia
Martin picked off four steals apiece, trying to spark some MCCS momentum. Martin also led the team in rebounds with seven. The win for Veritas advanced them into a battle for fifth place against Halifax High School, with Halifax

prevailing to claim the final spot in the PIAA tournament, but for the Lady Chargers, last week closed the books on an eventful season which included an 11-1 CCAC conference record, an appearance in the CCAC championship contest, and a District III playoff run.

Bears Knock off Gettysburg, Qualify for States by Eric Pyles
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” may be the most famous quote from Charles Dickens’ novel A Tale of Two Cities but it also works as a description for how the past week played out for the Elizabethtown boys’ basketball team. The worst of times came on Monday the 24th when the Bears dropped their District 3-5A consolation semifinal contest to William Penn by a 61-49 final. “I don’t know what it was,” said head coach Rocky Parise. “It was definitely not our best game of the year and it was really disappointing because it was our last home game. I don’t know. I couldn’t really pinpoint what the issue was but obviously we needed to move past it.” Before the Bears could move past the game, they actually had to play the game. Unfortunately, when Elizabethtown did, they were unable to find their offensive rhythm which allowed the visiting Bearcats to outscore the hosts in all four quarters. It started with just a two-point, 12-10, deficit in the opening frame but York High was able to double that margin in the second frame. The 12-8 edge over the second eight-minute period stretched E-town’s halftime deficit to six-points at 24-18. Elizabethtown was finally able to put the ball through the hoop in the third quarter with their 16-point outburst nearly equaling their entire first half total. Sadly, the slow York High advance continued with a 20-point Bearcat frame
that put E-town in a 10-point hole with only eight minutes remaining. Elijah Eberly picked up 10 of his game high 27 points in the final frame but it was not enough as York High posted their fourth straight scoring edge courtesy of a 17-15 run that made it a 61-49 final. Eberly added 10 rebounds to his 27point night while Luke Pierson chipped in with five points and five rebounds. Ryan Parise and Patrick Gilhool each added six points with Parise tacking on five assists and three rebounds. Under coach Parise’s guidance the Bears did move past that 12-point loss to York High with an emphatic 71-41 victory over Gettysburg on February 27th. The Warriors had entered the 5A bracket as the top seed giving the 30-point blowout just a bit more juice. “We went from playing our worst game of the year on Monday to our best game of the year on Thursday, so we are really proud of that and really happy with the kids,” said Parise. “We won another district game and beat the number one seed in the district, pretty handily, at their place. We have to look at it from a positive standpoint.” This time it was the Bears holding the scoring advantage in all four quarters starting with an 18-12 opening stanza run. Elizabethtown clamped down on the defensive end during the second quarter, holding the Warriors to just six points. With their 16-point second frame the Bears entered the break sporting a comfy 16-point lead. E-town’s defensive effort in the third quarter did not lead to the same results as in the second quarter as Gettysburg managed 14 points coming out of the break. However, another 16-point frame from the Bear offense stretched the lead to 18-points heading into the last quarter. Elizabethtown hit their stride on both ends of the floor over the final eight minutes photo by Cheri Sine leading to a 21-9 game

E-town will play Regional Championships held at Leisure Mars, the second-place team out of Lanes and 222 Dutch Lanes on February District 7, at a site and time still to be 28th and 28th. Eight total keglers, five for the boy’s determined. “We’ll throw our hat in there and see if we can pull something and three for the girl’s, took part in the off,” said Parise of the PIAA bracket. “The singles championships on Friday the 28th but none were able to advance out guys are really focused and excited.” SWIMMING of the qualifying round. Four swimmers took part in the festivities, two from the boy’s team and two from the girl’s team. Ben Azzalina and Lexi Fink both qualified in two events with both opening the action on Friday, February 28th. For Azzalina that meant a quick trip into the pool for the 50-freestyle where the junior clocked a 22.07 to finish 11th in the 32-person field. Fink’s Friday work included a 30th place finish in the 100-butPhoto by Cheri Sine terfly thanks to a 1:04.09. 30th spot in girl’s qualifying thanks to her five-game tally of 898. That left Griffie 69 pins better than her closest teammate, Eryn Moore, but still 81 pins off the finals cut line. For Moore, her 829 qualifying series saw her finish 53rd while Elizabethtown’s third and final Lady Bear bowler, Alaina Telenko, finished 70th with a 797 series. While the girls were busy bowling at 222 Dutch Lanes, the boy’s quintet of Daniel Eberle, Zach Wentzel, Ben Davis, Andrew Telenko and Zach Deardorff were busy getting their qualifying rounds in at Leisure Lanes. Eberle posted the top Bear finish with games of 193, 214, 198, 188 and 198 putting the sophomore 45th with a qualifying total of 991. Wentzel was the only other Etown bowler to break the 900-series mark, taking 57th with his 965. Davis and his 893 series finished just outside the top 100, in 101st place, while Telenko and his 892 series finished 103rd despite being just one pin off his teammates tally. Deardorff finished 167th with a 791 series. Elizabethtown returned to action on the 29th for the team competition with Eberle, Alaina and Andrew Telenko, Moore and Wentzel making up the Etown five. Eberle and Alaina Telenko were the only two Bears to break the 600-series threshold with Eberle’s 229, 186 and 210 giving him a 625 series. Telenko checked in with games of 181, 235 and 196 for her 612 series. Andrew Telenko just missed joining his teammates but games of 178, 234 and 179 left the senior with a 591 series, just shy of the 600-series mark. Wentzel’s 572 series and Moore’s 521 series combined to give Elizabethtown a 2921 total heading into the two Baker sets. The Bears went 650 and 520 in those sets to finish team qualifying with a 4091. That dropped Elizabethtown into 7th place once all the team scores were tallied, leaving the Bears one spot and eight pins out of the six-team finals.
