GEARS To Hold Eggstravaganza BY CATHY MOLITORIS

EARS will hold its annual Eggstravaganza on Saturday, March 27, at Poplar Street Park, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. The event will begin at 9 a.m. Although the setup will be a little different than other years, the event will still feature all of the fun and holiday spirt of previous events, said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “This year we’re not doing all the activities we have done in the past,” she stated. “ We have really revamped the event to follow COVID guidelines.” The Eggstravaganza will feature an egg hunt with staggered start times for age groups. Children ages 2 and under will kick off the event, with hunts at 9 and 9:30 a.m. Children ages 3 to 6 will begin at 10 and 10:30 a.m. Those ages 7 to 9 will begin at 11 and 11:30 a.m., and those ages 10 to 12 will start at noon and 12:30 p.m. The event will wrap up with an adult egg hunt for

“It’s going to give that sense of normalcy ... It’s still going to be fun. There are still going to be great prizes, and, of course, there is going to be tons of candy. It’s something the community looks forward to every year, and we’re going to be doing it in a safe way.”

Mount Joy Township, West Donegal Township and Conoy Township. Eberly said a disc jockey will be on hand during the event to play music and add to the festivities. “We’re going to have groups wait in their socially distanced areas before they begin, and while they’re waiting, the DJ will play fun songs to get them ready to go,” she explained. The Easter Bunny will also be at the event, with a photo booth set up for free pictures. Nate Diegel, program coordinator for GEARS, said there was never any plan to cancel this year’s event, even though the structure will be a little different. “It’s going to give that sense of normalcy,” he remarked. “It’s still going to be fun. There are still going to be great prizes, and, of course, there is going to be tons of candy. It’s something the community looks forward to every year, and we’re going to be doing it in a safe way.” For more information on the Eggstravaganza or to register, readers may visit www.getintogears.org

“We’re asking people to register ahead of time for this event, and we’re limiting it to 40 people per time slot,” Eberly commented, noting that the new location for the event will also help control crowd size. “We are also limiting it to people who live in the areas GEARS serves.” Those areas are Elizabethtown Borough,

people ages 13 and up beginning at 1 p.m. All hunts are free, with the exception of the adult egg hunt, which has a nominal fee.

“We did the drive-through last year and that worked amazingly well, so we decided to do that again this year,” said Laurie Shepler, executive director of Cornerstone. The meal will feature Harvey’s Bar-B-Q stuffed chicken breast, green beans, mashed potatoes, applesauce, a roll and butter, a dessert from Pies Galore and a beverage. “People can stay in their cars, and we’ll put the meals in their trunk or back seat, and we’ll give them a link to the video presentation and to the silent auction,” Shepler noted. “For the video, Anne Beiler of Auntie Anne’s will be at our center earlier in the day for a tour to get to know us a little bit better, and then we’ll show her visit as well as updates about Cornerstone, interviews with some of the kids who come to Cornerstone and Anne speaking about her life story.”

Runner Up Best Roofer 2012

Following the presentation, the silent auction will open and will run through Saturday, April 3. “There will be lots of gift certificates to local events and experiences, food items, jewelry and lots more,” Shepler stated. The winning bid for each item will be matched by community donations. “So, if the top bid is $200, that means Cornerstone gets $400,” Shepler explained, adding that this event is taking the place of the organization’s typical fundraising banquet. “This special event is our largest annual fundraiser,” she remarked. “While we cannot come together at a banquet location, we know that our community knows how to come together in generous support of youths and the youth center.” Proceeds from

the event help Cornerstone continue to serve the Elizabethtown community. “We provide programming six days a week for students in grades seven through 12 at no cost to them,” Shepler said. “We are 100% supported by the community - businesses, individuals and churches.” In May, Cornerstone plans to add programming for fifthand sixth-grade students. “We provide a safe place for kids to come, where they’re making good choices and they are feeling loved and cared for,” Shepler noted. “ We work with them on homework, and we provide opportunities for building skills like cooking. We offer things like basketball and rock climbing, and we focus on things like building healthy relationships.” Shepler emphasized that Cornerstone could not do what it does without community support for events like this benefit. “The support of the community allows us to provide a safe, loving environment for teens who desperately need that in their lives,” she stated. “It really is making a difference in the lives of kids in our community.” For more information on A Dinner and a Movie and to register, readers may visit www.cornerstoneetown.org/ benefit2021.

Bears Hold Off Palmyra in District Opener

BY ERIC PYLES

The smell of high school playoff basketball was in the air March 3rd as E-town welcomed Palmyra for a District 3-5A first round clash. The two sides needed all 36 minutes to decide the outcome with the Lady Bears surviving Palmyra’s last second three-point heave for a 35-34 victory. As with any low scoring game, defense played a big roll in determining the winner. E-town held that advantage by holding the visitors to single digits in three of four quarters. That started in the first where E-town used an 11-0 run, capped by an Emma Blyler threeball at the buzzer, to post a 13-6 edge. The Lady Cougars were able to flip the game around in the second with 13-3 run. That run ballooned to 22-6 as it extended into the third and pushed the E-town deficit to nine, 28-19. The Lady Bears fought back with a 12-0 run, split into matching 6-0 spurts that closed out

the third and opened the fourth. The result was a slim 31-28 lead that E-town nursed to the 35-34 win. Jade Love-Morris led all scorers with 14 while Ainsley Raybold chipped in with eight. In a year of oddities, the E-town girls’ basketball team experienced a rare one, finishing the regular season after kicking off the postseason. Despite playing in a L-L play-in game on February 22nd and a L-L quarterfinal tilt one day later the Lady Bears closed out their regular season slate on February 24th with a 60-39 demolition of McCaskey. Elizabethtown used monster first and third quarters to leave Lancaster with an easy 21-point win where four of six scorers finished in double-digits. Love-Morris led that quartet with 15-points but it was the work of Raybold and Blyler that helped produce a 23-9 opening quarter run. The duo combined for 16 of Elizabethtown’s 23 first quarter points with Raybold’s eight putting her on the way to a 12-point game while

Blyler’s eight paved the way for her 11-point affair. Love-Morris fronted the 20-9 third quarter charge, collecting nine of her 15 points in the frame. Carly Sedun was the final double-digit scorer, matching Blyler’s 11-point effort with Elise Hassinger (seven points) and Taryn Hummer (four points) rounding out the offensive output. BOWLING Keep on rolling is a generic catch all phrase used by many, but it has a much different meaning for the Elizabethtown bowling team. The Bears kicked off their postseason journey on February 17th with the L-L Team Championship, had some winter weather delay the singles tournament to the 24th (boy’s) and 25th (girl’s) before heading right back out for the District 3 Championship on February 27th. Just three Bear bowlers made the trek to Hiester Lanes in Reading for the District 3 showdown. Eryn Moore repped the Lady Bears while Zach Wentzel and Zach Deardorff did the same on the boy’s side. “The

kids did well, I think they struggled with spares, but improved from last year,” said head coach Frank Telenko of his trio that posted just two combined games over 200 in 18 total qualifying games “We’re hoping we can put it all together and qualify for States!!” Wentzel and Deardorff split those two 200 games with Wentzel’s 242 serving as the high mark for Elizabethtown. Despite posting the team’s high score for the day, the sophomore still found himself outside the finals cut line. His 1146, put together with games of 165, 242, 186, 196, 182 and 175, slotted Wentzel into seventh place, one spot or 40 pins, outside the finals. Deardorff’s 200 game came in his final qualifying go-round, capping his run to 20th place. The senior posted scores of 171, 167, 160, 166 and 165 in his other five games for a 1029 total. Moore flirted with 200, posting scores of 195 and 190 in her middle two qualifying games. A slow start

gave her a 145-172 opening stretch which was followed by the 195-190 stretch. Moore closed out with games of 164 and 163. Add it all up and the senior posted a 13th place tally of 1029 in her final district battle. Moore, along with the rest of the Lady Bears, had a more enjoyable time in Palmyra on February 25th. Alaina Telenko, Hannah Griffie and Ally Evans joined Moore at Palmyra Bowling for the Lancaster-Lebanon League Girls Singles Tournament with all four Lady Bears placing inside the top 10. Moore led the charge by bringing home L-L silver after falling to Aliza Shirk of Northern Lebanon in the finals. After posting a 911 in the opening qualifying round, Moore worked her way to third in the stepladder finals with a 698 in round two qualifying. That meant a matchup and 184-140 win over Garden Spot’s Emily See in Moore’s first finals match. Up next were backto-back wins over a pair of Penn

Manor bowlers. Moore slipped by Lacey Slaymaker 169-162 in the second round before cruising by Delaney Reitnauer in the quarterfinals. Those two wins setup an all-Elizabethtown semifinal with Moore opposite Telenko, who earned her semifinal spot with a 1654 in qualifying. Moore continued her march to the finals by dispatching her teammate 170124 but could not carry that momentum into her finals match which went to Shirk by a mere eight pins, 200-192. Griffie was the next Lady Bear in the final standings, finishing fifth after a 254-209 second-round loss to Penn Manor’s Reitnauer. Griffie’s 207-144 opening round win in the stepladder finals came at the expense of Evans, setting up Griffie’s battle with Reitnauer and slotting Evans ninth in the final standings. Griffie used a 1580 in the qualifying rounds to start the stepladder finals as the fifth seed while Evans started eighth after her 1503 qualifying tally.

rounds for overall tournament champion. Treese, who began playing golf in high school and has been playing for more than 50 years, said the tournament offers a fun day for golfers. “This is different from a standard charity golf event,” he stated. “If someone enjoys match play, which I consider to be the ultimate game of golf, this incorporates match play into a charity event. It’s entirely different than what people are used to, but they love it once they try it.” The tournament is supported by the Pinnacle Foundation, a nonprofit that provides assistance and support to special-needs and critically ill people. The Pinnacle Cup benefits the Elizabethtownbased Camp Ladybug, a summer program for children and adults with mental or physical challenges. “I’m excited to mark our 20th year of this tournament,” Treese said. “We have had a number of sponsors and players stay with us throughout the years, and we’ve been able to contribute $89,000 to charity. I’m hoping this year we’ll get the participation to eclipse $100,000.” For more information on the Pinnacle Cup, readers may contact Treese at 717367-9144 or cdtreese@ centurylink.net.

The SPARKS Foundation will award $1,000 college scholarships to high school seniors whose intended college major is in the sciences. The scholarships are open to students who can demonstrate the need for financial assistance.

I developed this tournament to be a match play tournament with teams of two people.” The field is limited to 64 teams overall, with two divisions available for teams to choose from. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and under, and the Senior Division is for teams with players ages 55 and older. “In the Tournament Division, each team will play three nine-hole matches against different teams,” Treese explained. “Each hole is like its own mini tournament, and it’s a scramble format that takes the best score of the two players and compares it to the opposing team. Whoever has the lower score wins the hole.” Up to 14 teams will be eligible for the championship match play rounds to determine the overall tournament champions. Women’s Group Meeting Mock Trial Championships Slated To Feature Music

Daybreak will perform at the March 16 meeting of Neighbors Sharing and Caring.

The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition will be held virtually this year, with 233 teams from 199 high schools across Pennsylvania set to compete in the district and regional levels. Sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division, Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 38th year and is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors and sometimes judges for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and

March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 16 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will take place on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held virtually from Thursday, May 13, through Saturday, May 15. This year’s hypothetical case, Estate of George Romero v. Ashley Williams, is a criminal trial to determine whether the defendant is guilty of murdering George Romero with a chemical the defendant prepared. For more information and to read this year’s case, readers may visit www.pabar.org and click on “2021 PBA Statewide Mock Trial Competition turns virtual.” Interested volunteers may contact Maria Engles at 800-9320311, ext. 2223.

Kreider Farms Is Now American Humane Certified Kreider Farms recently announced that it is an American Humane Certified dairy. American Humane Certified program is an independent animal welfare program dedicated to the humane treatment of farm animals. The status is awarded by American Humane, a national humane organization, after farms undergo stringent inspections from independent auditors and pass more than 200 multi-pronged, science-based

welfare standards developed in collaboration with, and regularly reviewed by, a Scientific Advisory Committee. Kreider Farms officially received the American Humane Certification for its dairy farm in November 2020, although its cage-free hen-laying operation, under the brand Noah’s Pride, has been certified American Humane since 2016. For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus. An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also features a virtual option for participation. “The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.” For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year, Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from

the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated. She encourages anyone to participate in the Move for Life, whether virtually or in person. “If you’re looking for ways to put your life-affirming beliefs into action and truly help your local community, please join us,” she remarked. “The funds you raise - whether it’s $50 or $5,000 - all are used to meet the immediate needs of the pregnant, parenting and postabortive clients we serve. Your efforts help point people to Jesus. Plus, you get to enjoy a big celebration party with others who share your values in honoring God’s gift of life.” To learn more about Move for Life: Walk Run Plus or to register, readers may visit www.AlignLifeMinistries.org, contact hmuncy@alignlife ministries.org or call 717-2745128, ext. 315.

GRASP (Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing) will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 13 and May 11. This group is for individuals who have had a loved one die as a result of substance abuse or addiction. Preregistration is required for new attendees. For more information or to register, readers may contact Marjorie Paradise at mparadise810@comcast.net or 717-951-2720. Growing Through Grief, a 6week series, will be held on Wednesdays, April 21 to May 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. This series is for people age 18 or older who are grieving a death that occurred at least nine months ago. Space is limited. Interested individuals will first meet with a bereavement counselor to determine if the group will

meet their needs. Remembering Our Mothers will be held on Saturday, May 8, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. This free annual Mother’s Day commemorative event provides women whose mothers have died the opportunity to remember, honor, and celebrate their mothers’ lives. Participants will hear virtually from Debbie Miley, Hospice & Community Care chaplain and ordained pastor in the United Church of Christ, who will present “Still My Mother.” There will be opportunities for discussion with other participants. Space is limited. Readers must call the Pathways Center for Grief & Loss by Friday, April 30, to speak with a bereavement counselor who will provide the login information.

Open House To Feature Artwork Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host an open house for the “Forest Fable” art installation on Sunday, March 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. Community members may drop by to view the new clay art display in the Environmental

Center and meet the artist-inresidence. The program is free, but preregistration is required. To register, readers may contact 717964-3808 or governordick@hot mail.com and leave a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
