Promise Players To Present “Mobile Home Sweet Home” ECHOS Will Benefit From Show’s Proceeds By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“When I picked up the script (for a read-through), I laughed multiple times,” Promise Players community Christian theater group director Doreen Creighton said of choosing this spring’s play, “Mobile Home Sweet Home” by Pat Cook. “There’s a lot of sarcasm, and Tim (Strawser) pulls it off very well.” At the center of it all is Strawser’s character, Loff DuVall, who has run the Hampton Court trailer park with his wife, May June (Linda Ross), for more years than he can count. Loff is hoping to take May June on a vacation to escape the zaniness of the residents. Vonell Rafferty (Laura Scott-Wise) tries multiple income schemes, the latest of

which is searching for treasure with a metal detector. Lydia Spagway (Melody Risser) needs help removing her grandchild’s hand from where it is stuck in a toilet. Rhonda DeFalco (Wanda Jenkins) just wants to gossip, and Goose Halford (Ken Hess) tells long stories, such as how his grandpa has a metal plate in his head. “The kids used to catch him asleep and put ‘frigerator magnets on his forehead,” Goose relates to Loff. Compounding the stress is a request from Loff ’s future daughter-in-law, Anne (Christine Tedesco), who wants to film a reality television show in Hampton Court. And, to add insult to injury, Etta Frobisher (Creighton) has it in for Hampton Court. “She’s being nitpicky and trying to find anything to get this shut down,” Creighton said of her character. “She’s bossy and hungry for power. She’s just a bully.” See Promise Players pg 5

Promise Players community Christian theater group will present the comedy “Mobile Home Sweet Home” at Lampeter Church of the Brethren on March 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, and 31.

Members of the Pennsylvania FFA (PAFFA) will volunteer in the area while they are in Harrisburg for their annual FFA State Legislative Leadership Conference from Sunday, March 17, through Tuesday, March 19. Each year in conjunction with the leadership conference, members of the group participate in a community service day in which students and teachers from around the state volunteer at farms and other organizations. Hope Springs Farm in Hershey will again host a group of volunteers from the FFA. This year, the community service day will be

held on Monday, March 18, from about 1 to 5 p.m. The FFA group volunteering at Hope Springs Farm will prepare the flower and vegetable gardens, work on the five large compost bins, paint some pasture sheds, prepare the nature trail, and help with other assorted farm chores. Hope Springs Farm hosts a program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. Volunteer work on the farm is essential to the program, alongside the daily farm chores completed by participants of the day program called “Growers.”

Growers’ daily chores include horticulture activities and animal care. They grow and care for a wide variety of plants, including asparagus, raspberries, cabbage, carrots, and many other types of vegetables and fruit. The horticulture activities are intended to provide a connection between Growers’ efforts and the results of growing something. They gain a sense of accomplishment and pride when they grow something they can eat and share with their family and friends. Horticultural therapy is believed to help improve cognitive abilities, socialization, language skills, and

Limitless homemade chicken potpie will be on the menu at the Ruhl’s United Methodist Church Mission Outreach Team’s sixth annual fundraising dinner, to be held at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, March 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. Separate costs have been set for adults and for children ages 6 to 12; children age 5 and under may eat for free. In addition to all-you-can-eat potpie, meals will include green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, and a choice from a variety of homemade desserts. Assorted beverages will be available, as well. Attendees may eat on-site or take a meal to go. Quarts of potpie will be available for purchase to take home as well. According to organizer Gail Ruhl, mission team members get together in the morning before the event to cook up the potpie, which includes 150 pounds of roaster chicken, potatoes, and homemade noodles as part of the famous church recipe. The team knows that “many hands make light work,” and organizers help the process move along. “Curt Diffenderfer is our go-to guy,” Ruhl mentioned. “He is the one

who leads the kitchen and makes sure everything is running smoothly.” Funds raised from the event will help the mission work of the church in myriad ways. Ruhl noted that some monies are earmarked for local organizations such as food banks, while additional funds are sent to worldwide missions. A focus for this year’s fundraiser is the Mission Outreach Team’s upcoming trip to Clendenin, W.Va., from June 15 to 22. The team plans to travel to the town in the Appalachia area along the Elk River, where participants will help rebuild several homes and buildings affected by catastrophic flooding in 2016. “This is a more impoverished area that is still recovering and in need of help,” Ruhl shared. The team, consisting of teenagers and adults, plans to help with construction and other odd jobs as needed. Fundraisers like the potpie dinner are a key part of the Mission Outreach Team’s ability to serve locally, nationally, and internationally. While the events serve to offset the costs of travel and material assistance, the fundraiser gatherings are also a way for the local community to gather in fellowship and fun. “(The potpie dinner) really is a nice event where people can come and relax and just enjoy a good homemade meal and some fellowship with friends and family,” Ruhl said. “Folks can also get to know Ruhl’s Church and see what we’re about.” For additional details on the chicken potpie dinner, readers may visit www.ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400. Frobisher is not any kinder to her younger sister, Edith Maxwell, who is played by Creighton’s reallife older sister, Karen Ungemach. Ungemach is also a volunteer at the organization that will be benefited by the proceeds from the show’s performances. Formed in 2016 in response to a need to go beyond offering emergency shelter, Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) provides services to end the cycle of poverty while transforming the lives of families and individuals. Using the Housing First model, ECHOS assists individuals and families experiencing homelessness, at-risk of homelessness, or in need of services who are already connected with the Elizabethtown area, including Elizabethtown, Rheems, Bainbridge, Mount Joy, Marietta, and Maytown. “You have to be sympathetic (to the people we serve),” Ungemach commented. “I’m so fortunate to have a home, but in other circumstances I could be there (where our clients are).”

Compassion is key when interacting with folks in need, as well as with anyone in general, and that is a message that comes through in “Mobile Home Sweet Home.” “It’s about relationships and not judging people,” said musical director Nancy Snyder, who will also appear in the show as Jennifer Crown. “Mobile Home Sweet Home” will be presented at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 28; Fridays, March 22 and 29; and Saturdays, March 23 and 30. Matinees will start at 2:30 p.m. on March 23 and 30 and on Sundays, March 24 and 31. The doors will open one hour prior to show time. Child care for preschoolers will be offered during the shows. Bethany Christian Services of Central Pennsylvania will hold “Journey of Hope,” its annual fundraising dinner and silent auction, on Thursday, April 4, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Appetizers and the silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. Dinner and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dr. Christina Reese. She is a licensed clinical professional counselor and director of a mental health clinic. For more than 15 years, she has worked with children impacted by trauma. Reese recently published “Attachment: 60 TraumaInformed Assessments and Treatment Interventions Across the Lifespan.” She travels nationally, educating and training therapists and mental health professionals on how to work with children in therapy and traumainformed classrooms. Reese adopted her then-14year-old daughter from Albania through Bethany Christian Services. As a single mother, Reese found that beginning to parent a daughter who was already in her teenage years was challenging but also held many rewards as

their family developed. The family grew again when Reese married two years later. Reese shares both professionally and personally about the struggles and joys that adoption brings. The dinner is complimentary, and reservations are required. The deadline for reservations is Thursday, March 21. To register, readers may visit www.bethany.org/ Lancaster/Events, email Central PAEvents@bethany.org, or call Deb at 717-399-3213. Girls On The Run from pg 1 school district in Lancaster and Lebanon, and more than 90 teams will take part in the current session. But for Johnson, the impact goes beyond mere numbers. As the local organization celebrates its milestone anniversary, the staff is focused on a growth mindset that is about forging stronger bonds, not only with the girls who take part in the program, but also with their families, coaches, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and anyone involved with GOTR. “We want to deepen those relationships so that (all participants) are asking, ‘How can I be more involved? How can I be part of this mission?’” explained Johnson. GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has already reaped fruit from employing this mindset. In early 2019, the council was informed that the group had been chosen from more than 200 other GOTR locations as the recipient of the GOTR PaceSetters Award. The award was given in the Game-Changing Relationships category based on a number of examples of ways GOTR of Lancaster-Lebanon has built partnerships with community members and organizations. Among these are a two-year program involving nine Elizabethtown College students who have completed a service project with the program, and the production of the GOTR documentary “Run With Your Heart,” which was created in 2018. The program also worked with a local author on a book that is used to supplement the organization’s curriculum and has partnered with Penn Medicine/LG Health to showcase the GOTR participants in various presentations. The curriculum and training session culminates in the GOTR spring 5K, when the participants complete a local course with a buddy. This year’s run will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at SponaugleWilliamson Field, Franklin &

Marshall College, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster. “We encourage the community to join us,” said Johnson of the run, which is open to the public and offers a fairly flat course in Lancaster city. The run will start on College Avenue and turn left on West James Street and then right on North Water Street. Runners will then turn right on West Lemon Street, which becomes Buchanan Avenue. Participants will proceed right onto State Street and go right again on West James Street. The course will turn left on Race Avenue before taking a left on West Clay Street. Runners will then turn left on State Street and left again on West Frederick Street before returning to the Franklin & Marshall campus and ending on the school track. Funds raised by the event support scholarships for girls who need financial assistance to participate in the GOTR program. More than 6,000 girls have received this assistance from the Lancaster-Lebanon program. The atmosphere prior to a GOTR 5K is always unique because it includes pre-race primping for the girls, but this year, Johnson said that runners will see evidence of the 10-year celebration on T-shirts and through activities. The organization will also hold an Evening of Gratitude event on Friday, March 22, to celebrate those individuals who have contributed to the program’s success. “We just want to say thank you for making this possible,” said Johnson. Community members who wish to take part in the run may register at www.gotrlancaster.org. T-shirts will be available to those who register by Tuesday, April 23. Online registration will close on Thursday, May 16. On-site registration will be available on Friday, May 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Franklin & Marshall College and on the day of the event from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

The school collected 355 food items. The collection is timed to coincide each year with the NFL championship game and helps to restock the shelves of the local food pantry after the holiday season. The schoolwide community service project is intended to

In what has become as much a part of the tradition as the food drive itself, students could place their donation on a pile corresponding to their favored team playing in the big game. Eight partner community organizations will initially receive the training, including For the Love of a Veteran in Hanover,

the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, Warwick School District in Lititz, and the We Matter Coalition in Hershey. The grant-funded training will be offered in addition to WellSpan Philhaven’s ongoing Mental Health First Aid and QPR training, which is particularly geared toward suicide prevention. The Purimshpiel is a comic production with participants wearing costumes that depict the characters in the story in the Book of Esther, the central text and narrative that describes what transpired on Purim and why it has become an important Jewish holiday. Each year the Shpielers take the songs from a particular American musical, parody the lyrics of those songs, and merge

the themes of that musical with the story of Esther. This year the musical is “Mame.” The major roles are played by Elliot Sterenfeld (Mordechai), Josh Schwartz (King Achashveyrosh), Kevin Babione (Esther) and Melanie DeSantis (Haman). Other cast members include Ellie Blumenthal, Noa Blumenthal, Stu Blumenthal, Missy DePietro, Aron Dercher, Bobby Dickman, Michael Endy, Roni Jevens, Ryan Kareha, Elin Ketels, Kathy Levine, Lisa Miller, Rabbi Jack Paskoff, Janine Riben, Rachel Rosenzweig, Harvery Scolnick, Ronda Shiffrin, Judith Singer, Sharon Swanger,

Colleen Stameshkin, Carol Woodman, Ruth Wunderlich, and Alice Yerman. Carol Woodman and David Stameshkin are co-directors, Alan Levine is the musical director, and Aaron Zinner is technical and set director. The show is written and produced by David Stameshkin. “HAME-an” is intended for an adult audience and is not recommended for younger children. Admission will be free and open to the public. For more information, readers may call the Shaarai Shomayim office at 717-3975575 or email David Stameshkin at david.stameshkin@fandm.edu.

Azzalina Finishes 9th in District Swimming by Eric Pyles

The saying goes that all good things come to an end and for the Elizabethtown swimming team that end was the District 3-3A Championship meet on March 1st and 2nd. The Bears sent three swimmers to Cumberland Valley High School for the championship meet with Ben Azzalina the lone member of the boy’s team while Lexi Fink and Gabby Walsh represented the Lady Bears. Azzalina and Fink participated in two events with Azzalina collecting the top E-town finish. The sophomore trimmed 0.86 seconds from his seeded 100 backstroke time by clocking a 54.89 that landed him just off the podium in ninth place. Azzalina was not able to replicate that feat in his other event, the 50 freestyle. His season best 21.95 had him seeded ninth when the proceedings kicked off but a 22.08 at the district meet saw him slide to 11th in the final standings. Fink’s double included work in the 200 IM as well as the 100 breaststroke where she finished 18th. Her time of 1:10.19 in the 100 breaststroke was a bit slower than her seeding time but she was able to move up one spot to 18th regardless. Fink improved both her time and her finish in the 200 IM, turning a 31st seed into a 28th place finish thanks to a time of 2:21.04 which was 0.63 seconds faster than her seeding time. Walsh joined the fun by partaking in the 100 backstroke where she entered the competition with the 23rd fastest time, 1:02.03. She moved up four places in the final standing by turning in a 1:01.73 in the finals.

BOWLING The boy’s bowling team also closed out their 2018-2019 season with their participation in the Eastern PA Regional Championship on March 1st and 2nd. The Bears heptad combined for a team score of 3669, slotting them 26th in the team competition. Bradly Ruth and Patrick Hoffmaster were the only two Bears to compete in all three games with Ruth taking series high honors. The senior averaged 225 over his three-game run to post a 676 series. Hoffmaster settled on a 556 series after games of 189, 188 and 179. Ben Davis (166), Zach Deardorff (128) and Andrew Telenko (159) finished out game one while Davis (149), Telenko (148) and Daniel Eberle (194) claimed the final three spots in game two. Deardorff (173) stepped back into the starting lineup for game three with Eberle (193) and Gabe Berrier (110) joining him. Hoffmaster also took part in the boy’s single tournament, rolling his way to a 55th place finish. Only the top 12 in the 75-person field advanced to the stepladder finals and the senior Bear finished out his E-town career with games of 216, 211, 192, 199 and 198. That 1016 qualifying round score falling just 119 pins short of the finals. For the Lady Bears, the hexad of Alaina Telenko, Elizabeth Vuxta, Eryn Moore, Abby Chaffins, Katelyn Garman and Hannah Griffie posted a qualifying score of 3705 in the team competition, good enough for fifth place and a spot in the stepladder finals. Once there they swept Muhlenberg, 2-0, in the quarterfinals with wins of 158-150 and 188-141 dropping them into the semifinals opposite Governor Mifflin. E-town needed all

three games to topple the Lady Mustangs, rebounding for wins of 180-175 and 208-202 after a 181-176, opening game loss. The Lady Bears stumbled in the finals, falling to Shikellamy by a 2-0 count. The Lady Braves used wins of 177-143 and 149-132 to claim their third Eastern PA Regional title in the last four years. With the loss the Lady Bears missed out on their second championship, instead adding silver to the 2017 title that broke up Shikellamy’s chance at a four-peat. Garman paced the Lady Bears in the qualifying round with her threegame tally of 713 pushing her onto the Eastern PA Regional All-Star team. Chaffins posted games of 148, 215 and 173 for a 536 series while Moore and Vuxta finished seven pins apart. Moore used games of 136, 181 and 149 for a 466 series while Vuxta put her 459 series together with games of 139, 190 and 130. Telenko occupied the final spot in two of the three games with Griffie posting a 110 in the opening game. Telenko finished out the final spot with games of 159 and 190. Five of those six Lady Bears also took part in the singles tournament where Garman brought home the top finish. The senior worked her way to 21st place with games of 194, 164, 206, 199 and 212 for a qualifying score of 975. Chaffins followed with a 46th place tally of 897 while Moore claimed 68th place thanks to her 844. Vuxta was the final Lady Bear to crack the 800-pin plateau with games of 183, 169, 154, 158 and 157 giving her an 821, good enough for 76th place. Griffie rounded out the E-town contingent, finishing 100th with games of 176, 147, 192, 127 and 176 for a 768 series.

Individuals who have considered participating in a short-term mission trip are encouraged to join a team. People of all ages, from teenagers to seniors, are welcome to apply. The first trip, scheduled from Saturday, July 20, through Sunday, July 28, will be to Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota - home to one of the poorest counties in the United States. The program will work with the Cheyenne River Youth Project and Takini School to

reach the youths on the reservation. This trip will focus on workshops for children of all ages, introducing them to new ideas and combining fun with education. A trip to El Salvador will be held from Sunday, Aug. 4, to Saturday, Aug. 10, to conduct a children’s soccer camp, along with continuing last year’s Bible studies. The ministry also hopes to partner with a U.S.-based youth soccer program to obtain donations of used cleats, balls, goals, and other equipment. A two-week mission trip to Zambia, Africa, will be taken from Friday, Aug. 2, to Saturday, Aug. 17. WAGC has been working in Zambia since 2010 and has established strong ties with

the villages it serves there. Volunteers will get to work directly with residents in several small rural villages in areas including child evangelism, teacher and classroom support, a sports clinic, and installation of a clean water well. Additionally, several free vision clinics will be offered to examine villagers and provide them with free prescription eyeglasses, if needed. No experience is necessary. Training will be provided. IU 13 Posts ESY Summer Job Fair By Ann Mead Ash

According to Noel Johns, human resources recruiter for the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU 13) Extended School Year (ESY) program, the summer program offers employment not only for special education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists, and nurses, but also for high school graduates who are considering going into the social work or education field. “We need people who have an interest and a heart and a love for working with students with special needs,” said Johns. To help fill the job roster for the five-week program, which will run from Monday, June 24, through Thursday, July 25, IU 13 will hold an ESY Job Fair on Wednesday, March 20, at the Conference and Training Center,

1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, from 3 to 6 p.m. Most programs, which are based out of more than a dozen locations, run from 8 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Thursdays, but one location will hold a full-day program. Classes will not be held on Thursday, July 4. According to Katie Schultz, ESY program supervisor, the program is for students determined to be eligible based on their individualized education plans and their local school district’s team. Students who are matriculating within the IU 13 go through a similar process. “Students who are eligible are selected for referral based on regression and recoupment skills,” said Schultz. “(Eligible students) receive instruction in areas where their teams have determined they need to maintain to be successful in the next school

year,” she stated, adding that students in kindergarten through 12th grade and up to age 21 in certain circumstances will be served by the program. “We keep the (student’s) placement the same as during the school year, so if they’re in a self-contained classroom, we keep that the same and by grade level and location,” explained Schultz. In 2018, ESY served 600 students, but Schultz noted that this year more than 1,000 students may take part because districts that previously ran their own programs have decided to partner with the IU 13. Johns stated that the expanded program will mean that increased staff must be hired. “To support the number of classrooms and students, we will need more than 400 staff members,” said Johns, who added that although a number of IU 13 staff members will probably sign on, more employees will be needed. “It’s a nice summer job, and it’s an opportunity to get some experience,” shared Johns. “We provide a lot of training prior to the onset of ESY on working with students on the autism spectrum, those in multiple disabilities classrooms, first aid, and CPR,” she said, adding, “We make sure we have staff that is a mix of experienced with newer staff.” Readers who are interested in more information may visit www.iu13.org. For answers to specific questions, individuals may email hr@iu13.org or call 717-6061738. To complete an application for an on-site interview during the job fair, applicants may visit www.iu13.org/ESYapply.

Students from throughout the area covered by Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU 13) will benefit from the Extendend School Year program to be held this summer. To staff the program, IU 13 will hold a job fair at its Lancaster location on March 20 from 3 to 6 p.m.
