Covering Veterans With Kindness BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“You are not forgotten.” That’s the message behind Blankets of Honor, an organization that works to recognize veterans and their supporters. Blankets of Honor began as a subcommittee of the Marietta Legion Riders Post 466 about a year ago, said David Chobanoff, chief marketing officer. “We give a blanket to a veteran, a Gold Star parent or a vet supporter, and we do a presentation,” he explained. “We hand
them a blanket depicting the branch they (or their loved one) served in.” The blankets not only represent comfort and warmth to the recipient, but also have a deeper meaning, he stated. “The threads of a blanket are intertwined, and that represents how we are holding the person up. We are supporting them,” he said. “We want to do everything we can do for the people who need us. Once they receive a blanket from us, they become part of our family.” See Blankets pg 4
The Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library will hold their spring book sale on March 24 through 27 to benefit the library.
Book Sale Will Benefit Library “We are going to have a great selection this year ... Everybody’s been cleaning out their houses during quarantine, and we have received lots of donations because of that. We’re really going to have something for everyone.” The tables will be more than six feet apart, so you don’t have to worry about browsing books near other people. You can look through the books and stay socially distanced.” Visitors to the sale will find affordably priced books on a variety
of topics. “There will be lots of regular paperback books as well as trades, which are the oversized, higher-quality paperbacks,” she stated. “We’ll also have children’s hardback and paperback books for sale.” Attendees must wear a mask and are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes. Customers will count and package their own purchases, while volunteers will calculate the cost and collect money. The sale will accept cash, check or credit cards. Proceeds will benefit the library and its programming “We are going to have a great selection this year,” Hench said. “Everybody’s been cleaning out their houses during quarantine, and we have received lots of donations because of that. We’re really going to have something for everyone.” Volunteers are needed to help with the sale. Looking for something new to read? Look no further than the Elizabethtown Public Library. The Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library will hold their annual Spring Paperback and Children’s Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24; from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27. The sale will be held in the lower level of the library, 10 S. Market St. The entrance is in the back of the building where the parking lot is located. “We started this sale about five or six years ago,” said Janet Hench, treasurer of the Friends group. “We used to have it upstairs in the library rotunda, and it was a smaller sale. A lot of people didn’t even know it was there.” Last year, the group planned to hold the sale downstairs, where there is more room for books, for the first time, but COVID caused
the sale to be canceled. “We’re excited to be able to do it this year,” Hench remarked. “It will be a much bigger space, and we’ll have plenty of room for social distancing. …

VanderMey And Team Win Competition and is pursuing a master’s degree in interactive design at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. This year’s Student Design Charette challenge asked teams to explore the potential for data about individuals to enhance global health and well-being. Participants were challenged to explore issues of global health and well-being, identify interesting or provocative use cases, and use transparent,
empowered participation with data to design for the outcomes needed in the 21st-century world. The 2021 competition took place online, giving students the opportunities to work together for a longer period. Participants received mentoring and a free ticket to the virtual Interaction21
conference. Finalists were selected from an international pool of graduate and undergraduate students, and each member of the winning team earned a cash prize. VanderMey’s team members were Liz Wang from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and Samantha Tung from Loughborough University.

Blankets from pg 1

Blankets of Honor began as a Facebook group, and the response has been overwhelming, Chobanoff said. “We now have over 1,200 people in the group,” he remarked. “We have given out more than 50 blankets. … The whole project has been very well received.” As a nonprofit organization, Blankets of Honor relies on donations from the community as well as proceeds from the sale of apparel and accessories at https://teespring.com/stores /blankets-of-honor. “We are always looking for donations,” Chobanoff said, noting that the blankets are costly since they are quality, queen-size blankets. The group also gives out challenge coins at presentations and often includes decals or other items depending on the recipient. “We are also looking for people to nominate a veteran or someone to receive a blanket,” he stated, adding that World War II vets and anyone who has deteriorating health is moved to the top of the list. “Anyone is eligible to receive a blanket as long as they served or are connected to someone who served. It doesn’t matter if they served in combat, in peace, overseas or on U.S. soil the whole time. They are a veteran to us, and they deserve our recognition.” Blanket presentations are open to the public, and Chobanoff added that participants are moved by the ceremony. “It’s very emotional,” he stated. “Sometimes, we try to surprise the vet with help from a family member, but even if the vet knows we’re doing this, it’s very moving and special.” Currently, Blankets of Honor has made presentations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Chester counties, but Chobanoff said the organization has lofty goals. “We’d love to have every veteran in the nation covered in a blanket,” he stated. “It’s a huge goal to set, but we’re trying to get there one county at a time.” For more information on Blankets of Honor, readers may visit https://blankets-of-honor.creator -spring.com.

5700 Board Road, Mount Wolf, and proceeds will benefit the GEARS Camp Ladybug summer program. “Most charity events have a fourperson scramble setup,” Treese said. “I wanted to come up with something unique. I developed this tournament to be a match play tournament with teams of two people.” The field is limited to 64 teams overall, with two divisions available for teams to choose from. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and under, and the Senior Division is for teams with players ages 55 and older. “In the Tournament Division, each team will play three nine-hole matches against different teams,” Treese explained. “Each hole is like its own mini tournament, and it’s a scramble format that takes the best score of the two players and compares it to the opposing team. Whoever has the lower score wins the hole.” Up to 14 teams will be eligible for the championship match play rounds to determine the overall tournament champions. Teams in the Senior Division will play two matches of nine holes each. Up to four teams in the division will be eligible for the division playoff championship, which will determine the teams to play in the championship match play rounds for overall tournament champion. Treese, who began playing golf in high school and has been playing for more than 50 years, said the tournament offers a fun day for golfers. “This is different from a standard charity golf event,” he stated. “If someone enjoys match play, which I consider to be the ultimate game of golf, this incorporates match play into a charity event. It’s entirely different than what people are used to, but they love it once they try it.” The tournament is supported by the Pinnacle Foundation, a nonprofit that provides assistance and support to special-needs and critically ill people. The Pinnacle Cup benefits the Elizabethtown-based Camp Ladybug, a summer program for children and adults with mental or physical challenges. “I’m excited to mark our 20th
MICK BULLER & SON ROOFING
year of this tournament,” Treese said. “We have had a number of sponsors and players stay with us throughout the years, and we’ve been able to contribute $89,000 to charity. I’m hoping this year we’ll get the participation to eclipse $100,000.” For more information on the Pinnacle Cup, readers may contact Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net.

Seven Sorrows Catholic Church in Middletown is again selling chocolate eggs through Easter Sunday, April 4, or as long as supplies last. This year’s sale is limited to the varieties that the church normally sells the most of: peanut butter milk chocolate, peanut butter dark chocolate, coconut dark chocolate, and butter cream milk chocolate. The hand-dipped eggs will be sold for a fee per egg. The eggs have received regional recognition through various media outlets. In 2019, nearly 81,000 eggs were sold through businesses, through direct orders, and at Seven Sorrows Parish. Roughly 6,000 pounds of peanut butter, 870 pounds of butter/margarine, and 4,320 pounds of chocolate were used by more than 80 volunteers working over four months. Orders may be placed by visiting www.ssbvm.org and clicking on “Eggs.” Those ordering eggs must select a pickup time and location, and choices will include the parish’s weekly drive-through fish fry. All eggs will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis while quantities last.

ond quarter, pushing the Lady Bear lead to 13-6. From there the Lady Falcons got hot and E-town was unable to keep pace. The result was a 16-0 LD run to close out the quarter. That flipped Elizabethtown’s 16-6 lead into a 22-13 halftime deficit. The Lady Bears appeared to regroup during the break, scoring the first five points of the third quarter, shrinking the deficit to 22-18 but another scoreless stretch squashed that momentum. With Elizabethtown unable to find their offense, Lower Dauphin dropped another run, this one 8-0, that pushed the lead back to 12 points at 30-18. A few buckets from both sides put LD on top 34-21 heading into the final eight minutes. Down 13 points with just one quarter remaining the Lady Bears dug in for one last push, this time using Ainsley Raybold’s 11 points as their fuel. The junior guard drilled three long range bombs, the last one

As for the team competition, Telenko used six different keglers to round out a scoring five that produced a score of 4186. That tally left E-town just 101 pins short of third place and the first team outside of the stepladder finals. Alaina Telenko and Gabe Berrier teamed up for one of the five slots with Telenko going 203-149 in games one and two while Berrier stepped in for a 153 game three and a 505 series.
