The Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Order of DeMolay. The monthlong celebration, which will continue through Sunday, March 31, began when Master Councilor Holden Green and members of the chapter attended the the Mount Joy Township supervisors’ Feb. 18 meeting, and the supervisors approved a proclamation recognizing March as DeMolay Month. At the Feb. 21 meeting of the Elizabethtown Borough Council, Mayor Chuck Mummert read a similar proclamation, and he and the council members congratulated the DeMolay members for their community work. State and federal government officials have also issued proclamations recognizing Elizabethtown Chapter’s observance of March as DeMolay Month. During DeMolay Month, Elizabethtown Chapter will present a Sponsoring Body Recognition Program, a Senior DeMolay program; visit DeMolay chapters in Carlisle, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Reading and York; and hold a Prospect Party at the Carlisle Sports Emporium on Saturday, March 23, for young men interested in joining DeMolay. On March 17, members and advisers were scheduled to attend a church service at the Sell Chapel at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown in observance of the DeMolay International Devotional Day. The Order of DeMolay is a fraternal organization initially
started in Kansas City, Mo., in 1919 by Frank S. Land, for young men ages 12 to 21. Through its varied activities, the Order of DeMolay teaches the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership. The Elizabethtown DeMolay program also includes athletics, public speaking opportunities, community service projects, charitable outreach programs, and social activities. Elizabethtown Chapter currently has a membership of 40 young men from the Elizabethtown area and throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. The Elizabethtown Chapter is sponsored by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 Free and Accepted Masons, Corinthian Royal Arch Chapter No. 224, and Lancaster Commandery No. 13 Knights Templar. DeMolay activities are supervised by an Advisory Council of volunteer Masons, Senior DeMolays, and other adults. For more information about Elizabethtown DeMolay, readers may contact chapter adviser Jesse Spence at 717-209-0843 or etowndemolay@gmail.com. Pictured on front: At the

Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Sean Brown and Ryan Minnich have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) program. They now join the other finalists from across the country in vying for a 2019 National Merit Scholarship, to be awarded later this spring. Brown is the son of Frank and Caroline Brown of Elizabethtown. Minnich is the son of David Minnich of Lancaster and Sherri Minnich of Elizabethtown. Brown and Minnich entered the NMSC program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and by meeting the published program entry and participation requirements. The PSAT /NMSQT serves as an initial screen of students entering the competition, totaling
approximately 1.5 million each year. Brown and Minnich were named semifinalists in September 2018, as they had scored in the top 1 percent of all juniors who completed the PSAT in October 2017. They reached the finalist stage on the basis of their SAT scores, grades, essays and letters of recommendation. The nationwide pool of finalists represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. Scholarships awarded through the NMSC program are underwritten by NMSC’s funds and more than 500 business organizations and educational institutions. Pictured on front: Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Ryan Minnich (left) and Sean Brown were named National Merit Scholarship finalists.

Walking Tour from pg 1 The annual spring Iron Furnace Walking Tour sponsored by Rivertownes PA USA will be held on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. The tour, in its 17th year, will start at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center, 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, in the Lancaster County Chickies Day Use Park. The tour will begin with an overview of the role that the Susquehanna River played in the Industrial Revolution during the mid-1800s to early 1900s. The walk will include tours at the Henry Clay Furnace and the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The Musselman/Vesta was nominated and received the Com-
munity Initiative Award from the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards, which honor individuals and organizations that exhibited excellence in the field of historic preservation. The awards are presented by Preservation Pennsylvania, a statewide, private nonprofit membership organization dedicated to preserving Pennsylvania’s historic places through creative partnerships, targeted educational and advocacy programs, special projects, and technical assistance. Several changes have taken place recently at the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. The center has been given an
extension of its lease to include the furnace ruins. This will allow Rivertownes to clear more of the ruins. Also, Rivertownes has installed eight self-guided panels in the area. These panels will guide visitors through the ruins when the center is not open. The Dr. June Evans Henry Clay Furnace Exhibit is a new addition at the Iron Center. The exhibit houses many of the artifacts dug up during the 1989 to 1994 summer field studies conducted by Evans and students from Millersville University. The walking tour will be led by David Haneman, Rivertownes president, and Lenny Droege, director of the Musselman/Vesta Iron Furnace Center. With the calendar flipping through the days of March, any basketball fan will hear the phrase march madness used often. Typically, the reference is to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Championship but this year it also applies to both the girl’s and boys’ teams at Elizabethtown and their participation in their respective PIAA-5A tournaments. On the boy’s side that meant a firstround match-up with the champion from District 6, Greater Johnstown on Friday March 8th at Central Cambria High School. The Bears landed the first blow with a 21-10 blitz through the opening frame but the Trojans answered back. That answer came in the form of a 15-4 second quarter run that erased E-town’s 11-point lead and sent the teams into the break knotted at 25-25. Johnstown maintained momentum through the third quarter, posting a 13-8 edge in the frame to put Elizabethtown in a five-point hole with only eight minutes remaining in the game. Larry Locker and Elijah Eberly combined to score nine of the Bear’s 13 fourth quarter points while a defensive clampdown held the Trojans to just eight points. That five-point swing forced overtime with a deadlocked, 46-46, game. E-town’s offense stalled out in the extra session, netting just six points allowing Johnstown to steal the game with a 10-point run through OT. Locker led all scorers with 16 points, finishing with a boy’s record 1268 for his career. Luke Pierson added 13 points and Eberly 11 points to give E-town a trio of double-digit scorers. Amos Kollie (six points), Ryan Parise (four points) and Dylan Sweger (two points)
The Elizabethtown girls bowling team finished second in the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Championships at Dutch Lanes in Ephrata on March 2. Members of the team are: front row (from left), Hannah Griffie, Eryn Moore, Alaina Telenko; and back row, Coach Frank Telenko, Abby Chaffins, Katelyn Garman and Elizabeth Vuxta.
accounted for the remaining 12 points. For the Lady Bears, their March madness resulted in a 66-23 loss to District 1 champion, Villa Maria Academy, on Saturday March 9th at Spring Ford High School. The Lady Hurricanes landed what proved to be the knockout blow with a 25-6 run through the opening quarter. E-town never recovered, leading to a halftime deficit of 32 points as Villa Maria continued their charge in the second quarter to the tune of 17-4.
The second half saw Elizabethtown keep things closer but Villa Maria was still able to post a 24-13 edge for the 66-23 final. Marena Lonardi collected the final 17 points of her career, putting her tally at 1359, or seven more than 1993 grad Jen Williams. That moved Lonardi into first place on the school’s all-time list. Sydney Pierson (four points) and Jade Love-Morris (two points) were the only other Lady Bears to score.

Associated Builders and Contractors - Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) was recently awarded a $67,182 PASmart Pre-Apprenticeship Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry to create the Lancaster-Berks Construction PreApprenticeship Connection (P-A Connection). P-A Connection is a partnership between the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, Berks Connections/Pretrial Services (BCPS), and ABC Keystone. Through the P-A Connection partnership, PASmart Grant funds will help promote preapprenticeship in the construction trades, provide no-cost education for 20 individuals, and certify additional instructors at partnering organizations. P-A Connection seeks to increase the number of youths, returning citizens, and underemployed individuals in pre-apprenticeship pro-
grams in the two-county area and to provide the skilled trade and employability skills necessary to build the workforce pipeline needed to meet the increasing demand in the commercial/industrial construction trades. A portion of the grant funds will provide opportunities to promote the pre-apprenticeship program through open houses and awareness efforts, and funds will also be used to support Berks Connections/Pretrial Services. Berks Connections/ Pretrial Services is an organization focused on improving employment participation of returning citizens through the development of a career pathway in the construction trades and other similar organizations; expanding the number of secondary and postsecondary partnerships; and raising the number of youth pre-apprentices in the construction trades. Increased
articulation agreements with area schools, made possible by this grant, will allow additional area youths to more easily access the pre-apprenticeship programs. ABC Keystone will serve as the registered apprenticeship sponsor and is a registered preapprenticeship consortium. The Keystone Apprenticeship and Training Trust oversees the ABC Keystone apprenticeship programs in seven member-determined trades. Trades currently offered include carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, plumbing, HVAC, and sheet metal. Pre-apprenticeship application details for the 20 students to be served by this grant will be finalized in mid-March. To learn more, readers may visit www.abckeystone.org or contact stephanie@abckeystone.org.

Empower Hope has announced that Kellyne Njonge, one of the organization’s photographers, has been recognized as the recipient of the People’s Choice Award for a photo submitted to the Consultative Group to Assist the Poorest (CGAP) 2018 Photo Contest. Applicants were asked to show how financial services expand opportunities for people living in poverty in Africa and how these services enable people to build sustainable livelihoods. More than 600 entries were judged on technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. Njonge’s photo, titled “Seeing Our World Through the Lens of Hope,” shows a group of young boys looking through Njonge’s camera. Empower Hope exists to provide support to vulnerable children in slums and poverty-stricken areas of Kenya. Most of these children live with a single parent, with a grandparent or in an orphanage. Through its Generational Mentorship Model, Empower Hope trains, disciples and mentors indigenous young adults to come alongside children in their communities, to support, mentor and nurture them with the goal of giving them hope and purpose. The children are trained and guided to become mentors so that the model is perpetuated, and participants continue to receive mentorship through adulthood. Children are continually being added to the programs that Empower Hope offers. Donations provide long-term focus and have given most participants the ability to attend school, including primary and secondary schooling, and receive a university education. With a focus on sustainability, Empower
Hope also is establishing an entrepreneurial business model in Kenya, creating jobs and equipping new and existing businesses with tools to transform lives and revitalize communities. CGAP is a global partnership of more than 30 leading development organizations. Through financial inclusion, CGAP works to advance the lives of people living in poverty. The full list of winners in the CGAP 2018 Photo Contest is available at https://bit.ly/2SLkyjc. For more information on Empower Hope, readers may visit www.empowerhope.org.

Committee Attends Conference The Lancaster County volunteer committee attended the Fresh Air Fund’s annual Friendly Towns Leadership Conference from Feb. 1 to 3 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Over the course of three days, volunteers participated in interactive workshops with the Fresh Air Fund’s staff and community agency partners. Volunteers attended professional development workshops, with topics ranging from social media to community engagement. Fresh Air alumni delivered speeches, sharing how the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns
Program impacted their lives. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, nonprofit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Firsttime Fresh Air children are boys and girls ages 7 to 12. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with the Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. For more information about being a volunteer host family, readers may contact Marcia Weaver at 717951-8851 or visit www.freshair.org.
