It’s A “Hawaiian Hullabaloo!” At Camp Ladybug BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Drive by Elizabethtown Community Park this summer, and you may see people doing the hula. Pavilion No. 5 will be the site of Camp Ladybug, an annual summer program held for people who have mental and/or physical challenges. This year’s camp theme is “Hawaiian Hullabaloo!” The camp, which is a project of GEARS, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Fridays.

Camp will begin on Monday, June 14, and will run through Friday, July 23. Camp will not be held on Monday, July 5. “Camp Ladybug started in the summer of 1968,” said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “A group of parents wanted to keep their special needs children active and engaged over the summer.” The camp was originally run by the Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown, but GEARS took it over in 2003. ooking for something new to read? Look no further than the Elizabethtown Public Library. The Friends of the Elizabethtown Public Library will hold their annual Spring Paperback and Children’s Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24; from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27. The sale will be held in the lower level of the library, 10 S. Market St. The entrance is in the back of the building where the parking lot is located. “We started this sale about five or six years ago,” said Janet Hench, treasurer of the Friends group. “We used to have it upstairs in the library rotunda, and it was a smaller sale. A lot of people didn’t even know it was there.” Last year, the group planned to

of topics. “There will be lots of regular paperback books as well as trades, which are the oversized, higher-quality paperbacks,” she stated. “We’ll also have children’s hardback and paperback books for sale.” Attendees must wear a mask and are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes. Customers will count and package their own purchases, while volunteers will calculate the cost and collect money. The sale will accept cash, check or credit cards. Proceeds will benefit the library and its programming “We are going to have a great selection this year,” Hench said. “Everybody’s been cleaning out their houses during quarantine, and we have received lots of donations because of that. We’re really going to have something for everyone.” Volunteers are needed to help with the sale. Covering Veterans With Kindness BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“You are not forgotten.” That’s the message behind Blankets of Honor, an organization that works to recognize veterans and their supporters. Blankets of Honor began as a subcommittee of the Marietta Legion Riders Post 466 about a year ago, said David Chobanoff, chief marketing officer. “We give a blanket to a veteran, a Gold Star parent or a vet supporter, and we do a presentation,” he explained. “We hand them a blanket depicting the branch they (or their loved one) served in.”

Camp Ladybug campers, including Bennett H., are treated to games, crafts, activities and more.

The Atlantic League announced recently that it will open its 23rd official championship season on Friday, May 28. League officials will work with team executives on additional details of the 2021 season, including COVID-19related safety protocols. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with its Major League Baseball partners on test initiatives for the 2021 campaign. Mindful of government safety concerns, especially ballpark attendance allowances, the league felt it was critical to announce its intention to play a full season this year. Additional details regarding the full 2021 season are forthcoming. For more information, readers may visit www.atlanticleague.com.

Charity Seeks New Director BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Growing up, Randy Caldwell watched his father, Lloyd, go out of his way to help others. Inspired by his dad, Caldwell started an organization to give back to the community. Now, the Penryn man is the one who needs help. Caldwell created Lloyd’s Rides in 2016. The nonprofit organization gives rides on motorcycles, or in hot rods or other specialty vehicles to mentally challenged people and wounded warriors. Although the organization has been his focus for the past five years, Caldwell is facing mounting medical difficulties and is seeking someone to take over Lloyd’s Rides. “Right now, it’s just me in this organization,” he said. “My wife is a registered nurse, and she takes good care of me. I want to find somebody who will take care of this organization because it’s becoming too much for me.” Caldwell, 72, said Lloyd’s Rides offers a sense of freedom and joy to participants

and also lets them know they are not alone. “Lloyd’s Rides helps to build camaraderie and lets people know we care for them,” he explained. “I want to help.” Caldwell knows firsthand how it feels to ride, and he wants to pass that feeling on to others. “My dad used to take me for rides on his Harley when I was very little,” he recalled. “I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was 2 years old.” He emphasized that he will assist whoever takes over for him and will offer not only his knowledge of the organization, but also his connections to the community. “I have equipment. I have a banner and a tent to put up at motorcycle rallies,” he said, noting that he recruits for his organization at events. “I have been going to local motorcycle breakfasts, and I’ll help the person who takes over to keep everything going.” Along with helping mentally challenged people and veterans, Caldwell’s organization is

also focused on first responders. “A lot of first responders are veterans,” he stated. “I want to help the ones who are suffering and who are at risk for suicide.” Caldwell has a mission to combat post-traumatic stress disorder, he noted, and Lloyd’s Rides has expanded its services to offer computers for veterans who have this condition. Mary Caldwell, Randy’s wife of almost 50 years, noted that her husband has had a passion

to give back since his youth, when medical problems prevented him from serving his country. “He didn’t qualify for military service, and because of that, he’s always had a desire to help people who have served and who are suffering because of their service,” she explained. “Charity has always been important to him.” For more information on Lloyd’s Rides, readers may visit www.lloydsrides.org or email Randy Caldwell at lloyds rides@gmail.com.

Blankets of Honor works to acknowledge veterans and their supporters.

The blankets not only represent comfort and warmth to the recipient, but also have a deeper meaning, he stated. “The threads of a blanket are intertwined, and that represents how we are holding the person up. We are supporting them,” he said. “We want to do everything we can do for the people who need us. Once they receive a blanket from us, they become part of our family.”

Blankets of Honor began as a Facebook group, and the response has been overwhelming, Chobanoff said. “ We now have over 1,200 people in the group,” he remarked. “We have given out more than 50 blankets. … The whole project has been very well received.” As a nonprofit organization, Blankets of Honor relies on donations from the community as well as proceeds from the sale of apparel and

ipants are moved by the ceremony. “It’s very emotional,” he stated. “Sometimes, we try to surprise the vet with help from a family member, but even if the vet knows we’re doing this, it’s very moving and special.” Currently, Blankets of Honor has made presentations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Chester counties, but Chobanoff said the organization has lofty goals. “We’d love to have every veteran in the nation covered in a blanket,” he stated. “It’s a huge goal to set, but we’re trying to get there one county at a time.” For more information on Blankets of Honor, readers may visit www.blankets ofhonor.org.

The EIC awards honor every member of the construction team, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning projects, selected from entries across the nation, are judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. The group also gives out challenge coins at presentations and often includes decals or other items depending on the recipient. “We are also looking for people to nominate a veteran or someone to receive a blanket,” he stated, adding that World War II vets and anyone who has deteriorating health is moved to the top of the list. “Anyone is eligible to receive a blanket as long as they served or are connected to someone who served. It doesn’t matter if they served in combat, in peace, overseas or on U.S. soil the whole time. They are a veteran to us, and they deserve our recognition.” Blanket presentations are open to the public, and Chobanoff added that partic-

LDHL Celebrates 60th Anniversary February marked the 60year anniversary of Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL), a nonprofit that provides Lancaster County residents with interest-free student loans to help them obtain their higher education goals. As of Feb. 15, LDHL, which was formerly known as Dollars for Scholars of Lancaster County and Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Lancaster County, has provided more than $18 million to more than 13,000 students to help them attend more than 500 colleges and universities. Today, LDHL continues the mission established by its founders in 1961 to provide needs-based, interest-free loans

to eligible students for up to four years with affordable repayment terms. Loan recipients have faithfully repaid those loans - even during the challenging season of the COVID-19 pandemic - so that LDHL could recycle the money to provide loans for future students. LDHL has been able to continue to increase the number of loans it provides over its sixdecade history due to financial support from individuals and companies, including many past loan recipients and their parents who give back in gratitude. The organization has had a steadily growing number of Legacy-level donors - individuals, groups, or organizations that have donated at the

$10,000 level, either as a onetime donation or over several years. Of the 253 loans LDHL provided for the 2020-21 academic year, 30 were Legacy loans.

The Traditional Loan Program application period for the 2021-22 academic year will be open until Friday, April 30. To learn more, readers may visit www.lancdollars.org.

PA 211 Offers Resource Help On Feb. 11, the national 211 resource celebrated 211 Day, joining the United Way of Pennsylvania and the more than two hundred 211 call centers across the country to celebrate this resource and those who make it possible. The date 2/11 was chosen for 211 Day in connection with the three-digit number anyone in need can dial to connect to a call center to obtain local resources across the U.S. Help is also available at www.pa211.org, where readers may also find information about requesting help via text. PA 211 East, United Way of Lancaster County’s signature program, covers Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, and Schuylkill counties. The 12 employees work to assist countless residents year-round. PA 211 call centers have been working to meet the increased needs brought on

by the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, PA 211 East had 69,377 contacts with the community in 2020, which is an increase of 7,322 from 2019. PA 211 is the free, confidential, 24/7/365 service that connects Pennsylvanians with all the health and human services in their area that are available to help. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PA 211’s contact center staff shifted to remote operations and continued to provide trained resource navigators. PA 211 provided its statewide resource database as a backbone to deliver up-to-the minute information about available local services and volunteer opportunities. PA 211 uses the PA 211 Counts dashboard, available at https://pa.211counts.org, to understand the needs of individuals in counties, legislative districts, and regions.

Camp Ladybug features games, crafts and activities for anyone age 6 and older. “ We have a very creative camp director,” Eberly said of Beth Lynch, who also directed camp last summer. “She has really great ideas. … She comes up with wonderful activities, and really, the possibilities of what we can do at camp are endless.” Eberly said the camp has proven so popular that there are campers and volunteers who return year after year. “We have some campers in their 40s who have come for years,” she stated. “We have a lady in her 80s who has volunteered for years.” She noted that Camp Ladybug would not be possible without community sponsors who help fund the camp, which is free to Elizabethtown residents, and without volunteers who are dedicated to making the camp fun for everyone. “We try to achieve one-toone ratios of volunteers to campers, and we usually get that,” Eberly remarked. “We have wonderful support from the community.” She said the camp not only offers something fun to do over the summer, but also gives campers the chance to try new things. “You just have to take a look at our photos on Facebook to see all the things that camp provides,” she stated. “It’s amazing what we can accomplish with the campers. We’re able to offer them the chance to experience activities they may never have tried before. It’s really great to be able to introduce our campers to so much through this camp.”

Chargers Claim Third Straight CCAC Title

BY LEAH SINTIC

Mount Calvary boys’ basketball claimed the CCAC banner for the third consecutive year with their 73-47 triumph over the Conestoga Christian Cougars on Tuesday, March 2nd.

The championship matchup was a highly anticipated showdown and one that culminated in the Chargers’ 20th consecutive win. The Chargers rocketed out to a 19-9 first quarter lead and continued to build on that momentum. “We wanted to start fast and

keep the pressure up for the entire game while also executing at a high level on offense” pointed out head coach Kory Pruner. “I was so proud of every person on the team. We really played a complete game.” That high offensive level was bolstered by a game high 24 points from senior Aidan Masters, 15 from freshman Avery Kopcha, and 12 from Hunter Stewart. Prior to the CCAC title game, the Chargers took down Linville Hill, 79-49, in the semifinal round on February 17th. Masters (24 points) and Kopcha (21 points) again paced the offense, reinforced by 10 points from Wyatt Lamb while Stewarts’ eight rebounds and Brett Taylor’s seven assists and four steals made the Chargers a threat from all angles. The Chargers’ District run was cut short in the semi-final round after a 70-67 loss to La Academia Charter, a team that the Chargers had defeated in the regular season,

73-70, in early January. “Although we fell short of our goal of winning the District and returning to the state tournament, the season was still a success in every other measure,” reflected Pruner. “More important than the 21 straight wins was the ability of this team to play their hearts out in order to honor God and build each other up.” The club’s theme for the year was “Rise Up” an exhortation to grow in the authenticity of their faith. Prior to their eventful post-season was a flawless 18-0 regular season. This close-knit team learned to depend on each other as they faced obstacles unique to a season held during a pandemic as well as overcoming stiff competition from Hamburg (72-62), Delone Catholic (8257), Lancaster Country Day (73-55), and Millersburg (73-57). In each of their victories, the Chargers showcased balanced scoring and great defense, while demonstrating unselfish play and

unity. Four MC seniors were pivotal leaders both on and off the court and will be greatly missed. Aidan Masters, Evan Barnes, Damian Rutt, and Hunter Stewart will each graduate this spring and Coach Pruner had high praise for the unique talents of each one. Barnes has filled many a role on the Charger basketball team and will be remembered for his continued growth and efforts, as well as his three-point shot, netting 53 downtown buckets in his varsity career. “Evan is a wonderful teammate and has become a very coachable young man. His support for those who play more than him, and his respect of my coaching decisions shows that he has grown both spiritually and as a man,” noted Pruner. Masters has left no doubt to his impact on the game, accruing 1391 total points in his varsity career as well as dominating the stats with 249 steals and 391 assists. Masters was certainly a major contributor to the last three CCAC championship titles, but his influence went beyond just his on-court prowess. “Many will remember Aidan as a great athlete and one of the best players in program history. But I will also remember him for his incredible growth as a student and leader over the past four years. His light-hearted personality partnered with an unwavering determination to perform at a high level makes him a uniquely impactful leader,” described Pruner. Stewart’s energy on the hardwood was never in question, and his enthusiasm for anything he put his mind to is one of his key traits. Stewart finished his varsity career just shy of the 1,000-point milestone, at 976, and surpassed 700 career rebounds. “Hunter is a player after my own heart - intense, smart, willing to dive on the floor, loves to rebound and play in the post,” Pruner pointed out. “His passion for the game is only shadowed by his love for God and constant pursuit of doing what is right.” When describing Rutt, Pruner used the words ‘servant leader’ and emphasized Rutt’s unique ability to apply his skills in ways that were truly best for the team, reflected in his collection of 102 career assists. “Damian is a player who is unselfish yet undeterred; who has great perspective, and is willing to defer to his teammate. He works hard in every aspect of life, and typically does so with a quiet humility.” While not everything in the season went according to plan, the Chargers close the books on another season distinguished by accomplishment, character growth, and

motivation for the future. “Three titles in a row is something to cherish-something our seniors will take with them and that our underclassmen will use as fuel for next year,” concluded Pruner. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Chargers’ post-season run in the CCAC tournament started out with a win over High Point Baptist (40-33) but came to a halt in the semi-finals after a 46-36 loss to eventual conference champions Harrisburg Christian. Accumulating a 15-8 overall season record, the Lady Chargers showed their endurance and improvement, stringing together a seven-game winning streak to close the regular season and embark on their playoff journey. After their exit from the CCAC tournament, the Lady Chargers headed to PIAA District III playoffs and squared off against Greenwood High School, falling by a slim 41-38 margin. “I’m proud of the girls and their never quit attitude,” praised head coach Phil Ferrari. “We battled all year long regardless of the circumstances and we stayed together as a team.” The squad will bid farewell to senior athletes Kara Locker and Julia Martin. Locker finishes her four-year varsity career with 985 total points, averaging over 15 ppg this season. Her leadership on the court embodied the team theme of accountability and high standards taken from Proverbs 27:17. “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (NKJ). “Kara has been our leading scorer since her freshman year and we are obviously going to miss what she brings on the offensive end but more importantly we are going to miss her leadership and her desire to get better as a basketball player,” Ferrari said of Locker. “She has worked extremely hard to improve every year and as a result she has challenged her teammates to raise their level of play as well.” When describing Martin, Ferrari emphasized her hustle and determination, attributes easily confirmed by a glance at her career stats, as Martin holds the distinction of the program’s all-time leader in both steals (267) and deflections (233). “Julia’s contributions cannot simply be measured by how many points she has scored. She led the team in deflections, steals and allaround hustle plays. I’ve never seen a faster player on the court and I’ve received so many compliments from other players and coaches about how hard she plays and how she never gives up,” concluded Ferrari.

Several Elizabethtown Area School District students were recently recognized as Do the Right Thing honorees. Marley Leggett, a firstgrade student, was recognized for assisting her fellow students and a substitute teacher in navigating classroom technology. Another first-grader, Shelby Rios, ensured that a fellow student got onto the correct

bus. Katie Moore, a secondgrade student, was recognized for donating her hair to Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids. Grayson Marz, a seventhgrader, was honored for arranging a virtual student showcase intended to create a sense of community and togetherness for the student participants. The students’ good deeds were acknowledged at ceremonies held recently at

their respective schools, where each honoree received a certificate of recognition, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, and a gift certificate. Do the Right Thing is a national program, and locally it is a collaborative effort between Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care, the Elizabethtown police departments, and the Elizabethtown Area School Dis-

trict. The program emphasizes random acts of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed. Anyone over age 18 can nominate a student. Nomination forms are available at www.eactc.org.
