10 - MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition - April 3, 2019
ET Girl’s Lax Tops CV, Bows to Township by Eric Pyles
With the 2019 lacrosse season underway, the Lady Bears experienced both the highs of victory and the lows of defeat. E-town kicked off their season on March 25th, rolling over Conrad Weiser by a 20-1 final. Corrie Baker just missed the shutout, allowing one goal while turning away seven shots on her way to the win. Kate Weissend paced the attack with six goals and three assists with Marena Lonardi (four goals) and Cyrose Contech (three goals, one assist) providing back up. Jaide Epler added five assists to her two-goal game while Samantha Shutt and Morgan Miller each posted two goal, one assist games. Abigail Dehmey picked up the final Elizabethtown score. The Lady Bears were back in action one day later with a trip to Neffsville to battle L-L power, Manheim Township. Elizabethtown found themselves on the opposite side of a 201 final, absorbing the loss to fall to 1-1. Contech accounted for the lone score while Baker registered another seven saves. BOY’S VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team is enjoying the early goings of the 2019 season. The Bears kicked off the season on March 23rd with a second-place finish at Conestoga Valley’s season opening tournament and followed with a 3-0 victory over Ephrata on March 26th. Nathan Seeger led Elizabethtown to wins of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-16 with a 24 assist and three block game. Jake Sevcik kept the Mountaineers from getting in an offensive rhythm with his 12 digs while Rudolf Woitas and Jacques Mortha led the offense with seven kills apiece. One day later the Bears suffered their first setback when Warwick paid a visit to Elizabethtown. The Warriors might have left town after collecting a 3-0 victory but E-town made the sweep difficult during a back-and-forth game three that ended with Warwick on top 31-29. The Warriors claimed the first two
games by 25-17 and 25-13 finals. Seeger led the way with a 21 assist and two ace night while Mortha enjoyed a nine-kill game. Sevcik added seven digs and Gavin Gilhool two blocks in the loss. TENNIS It took two weeks but the boys’ tennis team suffered their first loss of the 2019 season. The Bears followed their 7-0 season opening win over Manheim Township on March 12th with a rain shortened, 4-0, win over Susquehannock on the 15th and a 7-0 shutout of Garden Spot on the 20th. Trouble finally hit on the 26th as E-town fell to Cocalico by a 7-0 count. The Eagles won all three doubles matches and closed out the shutout with four straight set singles matches. The Bears bounced right back by blanking Manheim Central, 7-0, on the 27th. Ethan Lown took the top singles match, topping Silas Eldeen 6-3, 6-2 before joining forces with Trent McBride for an 8-4 doubles win over Eldeen and Andrew Rajaratnam in number one doubles. McBride enjoyed a second win over Rajaratnam, topping the Baron 6-2, 6-2 in number two singles. Elizabethtown’s other two singles players, Ignacio Bartolome and Evan Schneider, enjoyed the same double victories as Lown and McBride. Bartolome topped Hunter Winters 6-1, 6-2 in single action while Schneider got by Jacob Bidelman by a 6-3, 6-2 count. Bartolome and Schneider then teamed up to hand Winters and Bidelman an 8-5 loss. The Bears’ final win on the day came from Jon and Chris Gartley who posted an 8-2 win over Tony Stotzfus and D. Bertin. BOY’S LACROSSE Early season struggles have found the boy’s lacrosse team with the Bears coming out of the gate 0-2. E-town suffered their first loss on March 22nd, falling to Exeter by a 7-4 count. Chad Heisey accounted for half of the goals while Cam Poulos and Sam Azzalina split the remaining two scores. Sawyer Smith, Alex Hartman and Todd Hooper all hit the box score with one assist each. Duncan Keller turned away 12 shots
starter, Kristin Geesey early in the third after the staff ace surrendered her 10th run. Alyssa Hamilton took over from there, allowing three runs during her one-third of an inning. Brooke Bryan was finally able to stop the Wilson charge and finished the final four and onethird innings with just one run allowed. The trio combined for two strikeouts and three walks. Sadie Seaman and Hayden Calaman paced the offense with three hit games. Seaman picked up three RBI with her three hits while Calaman pushed two runs across with her three base knocks. Elizabethtown was able to right their ship one day later with a 13-2 shellacking of Solanco in Quarryville. Geesey returned to her dominating form, allowing just two runs on three hits and one walk to earn the win. Hamilton was the offensive star with a two RBI game with one run coming via a fourth inning sac fly and the other thanks to a fifth inning single. Jess Zimmerman, Hayden Calaman, Megan Gray, Makenzie Cummings and Erin Heffleger each finished the lopsided win with one RBI. TRACK The Elizabethtown track and field teams experienced an odd loss on March 26th with both the boy’s and girls’ team falling to Ephrata by a 97-53 final. The Lady Bears picked up all five of their wins on the track starting with the 3200m relay team. Cat Shontz, Sierra Kapcsos, Madeline Quinn and Katie Locker posted a 9:56.4 to nip the Lady Mountaineers in the meet’s opening event. The Lady Bears also closed out the track portion of the meet with a win in the 1600m relay. Locker anchored the team with Malayna Van Winkle,
in the loss. The Bears hosted defending state champion Manheim Township on March 26th and the result was an 18-1 Blue Streak victory. Azzalina picked up the lone goal while Keller was busy with a 24 save game. BASEBALL The baseball team sits at 1-1 two games into their 2019 campaign. The Bears kicked things off on March 26th with a 9-3 win over Reading. Nick Kreider covered the first five and one-third innings, surrendering three hits and three runs on his way to the win. Michael Baker finished things up for E-town on the mound adding three strikeouts to Kreider’s nine while allowing no runs and just one hit. Jake Black carried the big bat, rapping out two hits and driving in three runs. Two of those runs came from Black’s sixth inning, two run double while the third came via a fourth inning sac fly. Kyle Welch made his lone hit count, pushing two first inning runs across the plate, helping E-town open a 4-1 lead after the opening frame. Elizabethtown absorbed their first loss one day later with visiting Solanco leaving E-town a 12-1 victor. The Bears managed just four hits on the day with Hunter Murry’s fifth inning single plating the lone run. Javan Thomas scored that run after starting the inning with a single of his own. Cole Patrick and Jace Bock accounted for the remaining two hits, both singles. Patrick was also the pitcher of record for Elizabethtown, taking the loss for his three and one-third innings of work. During that time the senior surrendered seven hits and seven runs with only two of those runs earned. Josh Kreider closed the game out for E-town and was tagged for the final five Solanco runs. He did pick up two strikeouts or half of Patrick’s total to give the Bears a team total of six for the game. SOFTBALL The Elizabethtown softball team also finds themselves at 1-1 after an opening two-game stretch. The Lady Bears got the loss out of the way first, falling to Wilson by a 14-9 count on March 26th. The Lady Bulldogs chased E-town

Mt. Calvary Opens Season With Two Wins by Leah Sintic
"Baseball is ninety percent mental, and the other half is physical," Yogi Berra 15-time MLB All-Star and threetime MVP. Mount Calvary baseball took to the road to kickstart their 2019 season, picking up two wins in their opening week of competition, holding each of their opponents to a single run apiece. Last Tuesday, March 26, the Chargers headed to High Point Baptist and handed the Eagles a 6-1 loss. "This game was a great example of how we have grown as a team over this past year," pointed out head coach Jim Sintic. "We were able to combine quality pitching, good defense and timely hitting." Sophomore Aidan Masters wasted no time on the hill delivering a total of eight strikeouts over five innings and only surrendering a single hit, while picking up the win. Fellow sophomore Hunter Stewart pitched two innings in relief, firing off three strikeouts of his own and allowing zero hits to close the contest.
The fifth Charger run to cross the plate came two innings later when D. Lamb came home on a well-placed left field single provided by brother Wyatt Lamb. Masters completed the sixth rotation around the bases for MC, with heads up base running that allowed him to steal third and then score on a throwing error made by the Eagles catcher. High Point's lone run was scored on a wild pitch, followed by another Eagle batter reaching on an error, but the momentum surge was short lived for High Point as center fielder, Tyler Masters, nipped it with a snag in the outfield to put an end to the inning. "We showed good composer regaining control after making a few mistakes in the field," acknowledged Sintic. Thursday, the team headed to Antietam High School and once again got the job done, this time with an 81 differential. Noah Butler, a freshman, started on the mound for the Chargers and earned himself his first varsity win,
"Aidan and Hunter threw a great game," elaborated Sintic. "They both had command of the strike zone and their off-speed pitches were working. Their hard work over the off-season has really accelerated their growth as pitchers," he pointed out. Masters and Stewart didn't limit their contributions to the mound only, as each picked up two RBIs during their trips to the plate. The scoreboard remained unaltered after two innings, but the Charger bats were hot in the top of a game-changing third frame. Evan Barnes was the first to reach a base in the four-run inning, after he grounded ball that the Eagle shortstop misplayed. David Ellis sent a line drive into left field to advance Barnes, and Masters got the job done with a single that drove in both runners, giving the Chargers their first runs of the season. Dakota Lamb took his time at the plate, earning himself a walk to first, setting the stage for Stewart to make good on a ground ball error that propelled another two Charger runs.
throwing for three innings, giving up one earned run and striking out two. Tyler Masters pitched in relief for four innings, allowing zero runs and picking up three strikeouts. "Noah and Tyler stepped up in a big way for us tonight," commented Sintic. "When you play a full schedule, you need to get quality from your pitching staff, and that's what we've gotten so far." Damian Rutt had a huge impact on
the offensive trajectory of the game, going 3-for-3 and driving in one RBI. "Damian did a great job hitting the ball where it was pitched," Sintic pointed out. "His aggressive attitude is something that we have needed." MC got out to an early lead, crossing three runners over the plate in the first, and holding a 3-1 advantage through four innings. With the game still close, an offensive explosion in the top of the fifth provided four addi-
tional Charger runs and one further run in the sixth capped the night. Brothers Wyatt and Dakota Lamb were a big part of the four-run surge, W. Lamb led the team in with two RBIs and D. Lamb added another in his 2-for-4 appearance at the plate. "As a team we still have areas that need improvement, but we have combined good pitching and defense so far and it has translated into two solid wins," summarized Sintic.

HARTZ Physical Therapy (PT), which has four locations in Lancaster County, has opened a fifth office. The new clinic, located at 755 E. Main St., Mount Joy, was slated to open on April 1, and new patients are being accepted. The Mount Joy location is currently open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays while it builds a full caseload. It expects to increase to being open five days per week Mondays through Fridays - starting in July. Brian Hartz, founder of HARTZ PT, was born and raised in Lancaster County.
