hen someone considers joining the bowling team at Elizabethtown Area High School, coach Frank Telenko tells them three things: They’ll become a better bowler than when they started, they’ll make new friends and they will have fun. This year, the team members can add a fourth item to that list: They’ll compete in the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship. Eight bowlers will be going to the competition, which will be held from Saturday to Monday, June 18 to 20, in Louisville, Ky. The team qualified when five of the bowlers scored a total of 3,617 points during a section title competition, breaking the state record by more than 100 pins. Those five students - Alaina Telenko, Derek Deardorff, Daniel Eberle, Zack Wentzel and Ayden Pope - will be joined by three additional bowlers. Hannah Griffie, Connor Alleman and Eric Barnes will round out the group going to nationals. The team is looking for sponsorships and donations to make the

Daniel noted that Frank, whom the bowlers call “T,” supports all of the team members, no matter how skilled they are. “You don’t have to be a superstar,” he commented. “When I started on the team, I was horrible. I worked hard, and he supported me because I wanted to get better.” His teammates echo his sentiment that winning is important but working together as a team matters more. “We’re all competitive, but we also want to help each other out, and it’s really awesome to be able to have each other by our side to support us,” said Ayden. “I like the bonds we have.” Connor agreed, adding, “Even if we don’t do that great, we still enjoy it. As long as we have a good time and we get to be together, we’re happy.” To donate to support the team, contact Mackenzie Deardorff at 717-475-0290, Beci Pope at 717-989-2774 or Frank Telenko at frank_telenko@etownschools.org. trip financially affordable for the students. “We’ve sent letters to businesses asking for sponsorships,” Frank noted, adding that the team has also been holding fundraisers such as a whoopie pie sale. The team will host a car wash at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Frank said watching the students on the team grow in their bowling skills has been a privilege, especially as the seniors prepare to graduate. “It’s going to be tough to see them go,” he remarked. “They all have become great leaders, fantastic bowlers and just great kids.” For Frank’s daughter, Alaina, being coached by her dad has been extra special. “Bowling is my second sport,” she said, noting that she also plays field hockey. “There’s a different atmosphere with the bowling team. The chemistry we all have together, I really value that.” Eric said his coach has made all the difference for the team. “He always drives me to do my best,” he remarked. “He’s probably the best coach I’ll ever have.”

There is power in a pair of pants, strength in a shirt and joy in a jacket. Over the past 50 years, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has provided financial support around the world through its MCC Thrift shop network. To date, MCC Thrift shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 85 stores across Canada and the United States. In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. stores raised more than $1.6 million for MCC’s ministries. “The first MCC Thrift shop to open in Lancaster County was the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland in 1976,” said Roland Anye, thrift shop coordinator for MCC East Coast. “Mount Joy Gift & Thrift and Columbia ReUzit Shop have been operational since 1977 and 1978 respectively.” As Anye explained, shopping at an MCC Thrift store benefits both the buyer and the recipient of MCC funds. Shoppers can pick up clothing, housewares and furniture for a bargain, while their purchases provide support on a global scale. After a minimal portion of the proceeds is used to keep the stores in operation, most of the money raised is donated to MCC. “Donations from the thrift shops are designated to ‘ where needed most,’” Anye said, explaining that the funds are used to support domestic and international work of MCC. MCC partners with other organizations to provide care kits to prisoners, agriculture education to farmers and peaceful conflict resolution education, as well as many other initiatives in the more than 40 countries where MCC works, Anye noted. Deb King, national thrift shop coordinator for MCC U.S., emphasized that shopping at MCC Thrift shops can also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and supporting climate sustainability. “By reducing the number of new items they purchase, shoppers can have a positive impact on the environment, keep clothing out of landfills and reduce the excess use of resources needed to make new clothing,” she said.

To help celebrate MCC Thrift’s 50th anniversary, the organization is holding the Thifty 50 Challenge, said Laura Pauls-Thomas, communications and donor relations associate for MCC East Coast. “Sign up to receive a weekly sustainability challenge that helps our planet,” she explained, adding that participants will also have a chance to win an MCC Thrift gift card each week. Visit

https://thrift.mcc.org/50 /challenge to sign up. “When I had small children, I frequented thrift shops and yard sales because it was the only option that fit into our budget,” said King. “While that is still the case for many families, I am encouraged to see individuals who have disposable income choosing to shop at thrift shops. … Thrifting is now practiced by people of all ages and income levels.”

Come Out To The Community House For more than a century, the building at 264 W. Market St. in Marietta has served as a community hub. First a private home, it became a sanitarium at the turn of the 19th century and a soup kitchen during the Great Depression. Today, it’s the location of the Marietta Community House, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and supporting Marietta through community events. To support its mission, the organization will host A May Evening in the Studio on Saturday, May 14. The event will be held in the building behind the house, which the organization has named Studio 264. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will feature food, drinks, entertainment and silent and live auctions. “The auction is a means for us to raise money above and beyond our basic needs,” explained board member Kathy Leaman. The last auction was held in 2019, and it raised money to make Studio 264 handicapped-accessible.

Kathy Leaman in Studio 264

Potential upcoming projects at the house include replacing the furnace in the studio, completing exterior painting on the house and updating furniture. The evening will kick off with a cocktail hour, followed by a live auction at 6:30 p.m. During the cocktail hour, Leo DiSanto will entertain on acoustic guitar. Food will be provided by chef Christopher Panas of Comfortably Yum. “He and his team will have food stations set up,” Leaman stated. “He’s doing some really unique food to make this a

standout event.” The live auction will be conducted by Karl Boltz of Boltz Auction Company. “He is so personable and very entertaining,” Leaman noted. “He’s got a great sense of humor.” Auction items will include works from local artists, as well as jewelry from Koser Jewelers, a photography session, a golf outing for four at the Country Club of Harrisburg and more. “Our 2019 auction was very successful,” Leaman noted. “Seventy to 75% of the income came from donations

from local small businesses. This is a true community event.” This will be the fifth auction held by the Marietta Community House, and Leaman said it not only provides a way to raise funds, but it also brings neighbors together. “We have so much fun. It’s kind of like a block party,” she remarked. “It’s not an intimidating event. It’s an event to support a community building that’s here for everyone in the community.” She emphasized that attending the event is a way to continue the mission of the Marietta Community House. “How many organizations have lasted more than 100 years?” she said. “We’re here for the community and we’ve survived by the support of the community. This is your community house.” The reservation deadline for tickets is Wednesday, May 4. For more information on the auction or to purchase tickets, visit https://marietta communityhouse.org or search for “The Marietta Community House” on Facebook.

Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown, will hold its 13th annual Mini-THON on Friday, April 22, to benefit Four Diamonds. Mini-THON is a student-run organization that plans fundraising events during the school year, culminating with a dance marathon at the high school patterned after Penn State University’s THON. Due to COVID-19, this year’s marathon will be seven hours instead of the traditional 12. The theme for this year is “Groovin’ for a Cure.” Starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, student dancers will participate in competitions, dance, sing, and play games while they remain standing all evening. The fundraising total will be revealed at 10 p.m. In 2020, EAHS raised more than $85,000 with 100% of the money donated to Four Diamonds to support pediatric cancer research and help families of children with cancer to pay medical bills. This year’s fundraising goal for EAHS is $90,000. Family members and community members are invited to witness the Mini-THON from 6 to 10 p.m. on April 22. There is an admission fee, with a discount for students and no fee for children age 5 and under. Many of the activities will be included in the admission fee, and some activities will require an additional donation. Attendees are encouraged to dress in disco attire. Members of the community may also commemorate or honor someone they know who has been affected by cancer by purchasing a lantern. A Lights of Hope luminaria ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. To purchase a lantern, go to https://fourdiamonds.donordrive.co m/event/lightofhopelanternsales. For more information, visit https://fourdiamonds.donordrive.com /event/elizabethtownhsminithon or contact Ken Boland at ken_boland@etownschools.org or 717-367-1533.

The Pinnacle Cup will benefit Camp Ladybug.

Regular registration must be postmarked by Wednesday, May 25. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the GEARS Camp Ladybug summer program. “When I set up this tournament, I wanted to do something that would stand out,” said organizer Dale Treese, who started the event more than 20 years ago. “I’m a big fan of match play. Most charity golf events are based on what you call a scramble format, with four people playing together.” The Pinnacle Cup will feature teams of two. The field is limited to 64 teams, with two divisions. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and younger, and the Senior Division is for teams with players age 55 and older. Teams in the Tournament Division will play three nine-hole matches, with up to 14 teams eligible for the championship match play rounds to determine the

overall winner of the tournament. Teams in the Senior Division will play two matches of nine holes each, with up to four teams eligible for the division playoff championship to determine the team or teams that will play in the championship match play rounds. “Each hole is a mini tournament of its own,” Treese stated. “Players play against each other, and the best score wins the hole. The beauty of match play is maybe you don’t play as well as someone else, but you can still win. It only takes one hole to make a difference.” The Pinnacle Cup is supported by the Pinnacle Foundation, a nonprofit that assists and supports specialneeds and critically ill people. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Camp Ladybug, an Elizabethtown-based summer program for children and adults with mental or physical challenges. “The people who participate

in Camp Ladybug do not have to pay for anything,” Treese noted. “The camp needs financial support to be able to provide its programming.” Treese, who has been playing golf for more than 50 years, said he loves the sport because he’s competing against himself. “I liked team sports, but I found by playing golf, I couldn’t blame anybody else if something went wrong,” he explained. “With golf, you have to prove things to yourself.” He said he’s gotten great feedback over the years for the Pinnacle Cup, which has attracted players from nine states. “I’ve had a number of teams tell me they really enjoy the format,” he remarked. “They have a fun time meeting other people and enjoying a great day of golf.” For more information on the Pinnacle Cup, contact Treese at 717-367-9144 or cdtreese@centurylink.net.

Sunday station, washing each other’s hands by pouring water or using wipes, sharing food at the Passover station, and lighting candles and writing prayer requests in the “garden.” At the cross, attendees can post some of the things that hold them prisoner. At the Communion station, the sacrament will be served to anyone who wishes to partake. The church will celebrate Easter with an outdoor service under a canopy on the front lawn on Sunday, April 17, at 10 a.m. The service will include traditional hymns, newer worship music and the sacrament of Communion. Weather permitting, a photo booth will be set up for families to take Easter photos. For more information, visit www.facebook .com/ConnectStMarks or call 717-653-5493, ext. 222. Information about the church is also available at www.connectstmarks.com.

GEARS staff members are excited to return to a full celebration after scaling the event back last year due to COVID, said Lee Eckert, program coordinator. “There is no preregistration this year. You just show up on the day of the event,” he noted, adding that the festivities will include a variety of activities. “We’ll have an inflatable slide, a barrel train, an inflatable soccer kick, and we’ll have a balloon artist onsite making balloon animals.” The Easter Bunny will also be on hand for free selfies at a photo station. Eckert noted that all of the egg hunts feature prizes. Eggs are filled with candy, which is donated by Mars Wrigley; small toys; or a grand prize including Laserdome passes and Dutch Wonderland tickets. In the senior and adult egg hunts, prizes include a variety of gift cards to local restaurants and attractions. “Our grand prize for the adult egg hunt is a pair of AirPods Pro,” Eckert said. He emphasized that the event offers a fun way to spend time in the park, whether it’s just for a few minutes or for several hours. “This is a busy time of year

as he said.

for families, so people can pop in and stay just for an egg hunt, or they can hang out and do all the activities and spend the day in the park,” he explained. “And it’s definitely an all-ages event, with opportunities for people from babies to senior citizens to participate.” The Elizabethtown Rotary Club and students from Elizabethtown Area High School’s Student Council will be volunteering during the Eggstravaganza, Eckert said, noting that several thousand people have participated in the activities in past years. He added that the event is just one more way for GEARS to connect with residents. “As a nonprofit, our first priority is to give back to the community,” he said. “ We love to do events like this where we can show our appreciation to our community.” The Eggstravaganza will be held rain or shine. ET Tennis Opens With Six Wins, Four Via Shutout

BY ERIC PYLES

The obnoxious winter weather still hanging around has not prevented the boy’s tennis team from reaching flaming hot status. The Bears claimed victory in their first six matches with four of them coming via 7-0 sweeps. The lone exceptions were both 6-1 wins, one opposite Donegal in the opener on March 15th and the other on March 21st over Cocalico. E-town broke up that pair with a 7-0 win over Lebanon on the 18th and followed with backto-back-to-back shutouts over Warwick on the 23rd, Garden Spot on the 25th and McCaskey on the 30th. VOLLEYBALL Boys’ volleyball has also come roaring out of the gate thanks to a 3-0 win over Ephrata on the 29th and a title showing performance at the Buckskin Classic on the 26th. Elizabethtown opened that title run

by knocking off Wyomissing 25-18, 25-18 and 25-17 before outlasting the host Buckskins in the championship match. E-town needed to outlast CV after dropping the first two games 21-25 and 18-25. The Bears were able to get on the board with a 25-15 game three win and evened the match with a 25-17 game four victory. Elizabethtown secured the title with a 15-13 game five win. The Bears opened regular season action on the 29th, rolling over Ephrata by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16. William O’Connell tallied 14 assists and three blocks while Damian Tobias finished with seven kills. Joshua McCoy matched O’Connell’s three blocks as did Seth Rajnic who added four aces while Bryan Murray added 13 digs. TRACK The track teams stumbled out of the gate with both sides falling to

Manheim Central on the 29th. The Lady Bears dropped a 90-60 final while the boy’s lost a 93-56 decision. Two of the six wins on the girl’s side came in relays. Sierra Kapcsos, Liah Drager, Ali Fink, and Jordan DiRisio picked up the 3200m relay win while Jadea Pinkerton, Lily Heistand, Genna McDonald and Addy Haak took the 400m relay. McDonald added solo wins in the 100m and 200m while Fink tacked on a 1600m win to her day. Anna Rank accounted for the final win after topping the pole vault field. The boy’s managed five event wins against Central with just one coming from a relay. It was Juan Lopez, Owen Dommel, Nate Johnson and Taidou N’Dikwe picking up that relay win with a 3:53 in the 1600m relay. N’Dikwe also picked up a solo win, taking Photo by Cheri Sine the 400m in 54.9. Maxwell Gerhart E-town’s Trent McBride blanked Garden Spot’s Will Culbert, 6-0, (800m) and Jaycen Conrad (3200m) 6-0, at number one singles to help the Bears to a 7-0, nonleague accounted for the final two wins on win over the visiting Spartans on March 25.

the track while Carlton Wise won the pole vault. SOFTBALL The softball team made the most of their light opening stretch, knocking off Palmyra 6-1 on March 25th. Brooke Bryan tossed all seven innings, allowing one run on five hits to go with eight strikeouts, on the way to the win. Jess Zimmerman paced the offense with a three-hit, three-RBI day but received help from Sydney Stewart, Astyn Calaman and Carli Zerphey who enjoyed one RBI each. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The season opening stretch has been rough for the girl’s lacrosse team. The Lady Bears dropped their season opener to Carlisle on the 25th by a 14-6 final and followed with a 19-0 loss to Manheim Township on the 29th. Sydney Pope was in goal for both games, finishing with 15 total saves. Moira Shott, Aiesha Rios,

Charley Lengel-Kramer, and Emma Coolbaugh netted one goal each against Carlisle with Danielle Bruno picking up the remaining two. BOYS’ LACROSSE The going has been just as tough for the boy’s lacrosse team with the Bears sitting at 0-3 after losses to Lampeter-Strasburg, South Western and Manheim Township. E-town opened with a 20-2 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg on the 25th, followed by a 17-0 loss to the Mustangs one day later and capped the trifecta with a 17-1 loss to Township on the 29th. Elijah Poulos scored both goals against the Pioneers while Holden Haver netted the lone score opposite Manheim Township. Joe Zink stopped a total of 15 shots in two games, 12 against South Western with Grant Gunther recording seven saves against L-S.

BASEBALL A slow first week of action has left the baseball team to enjoy their season opening win over Palmyra a bit longer than expected. The 2-0 win came on March 25th with Isaiah Shayter tossing a one-hit complete game while adding 10 strikeouts for good measure. The Bears plated their runs in the fifth and sixth innings with Elijah Macfarlane driving in the fifth inning run and Mitchell Garber the sixth inning run. For both, it was their lone hit on the day. The enjoyment finally ended on the 30th with a 3-1 setback to Ephrata. Shayter tossed another gem, covering all six innings racking up 10 strikeouts and one walk with none of the three Mountaineer runs counting as earned. Jonathan Hinkle drove in the lone Bear run in the fourth, making it a 2-1 game, but Ephrata tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for the 3-1 final.

Lancaster County-based nonprofit Iron-Leg Corp announced that it raised $9,609 for children with disabilities at a “‘70s and ‘80s” themed dance party held on Feb 11 at The Village nightclub in Lancaster. An estimated 200 attendees gathered to raise funds through ticket sales, a silent auction and general donations. The music, costumes and decorations reflected the “‘70s and ‘80s” theme. Prizes were awarded for best male and female costume and best couple’s costumes. Funds raised through this event will go toward paying for prosthetics for local children in need. Iron-Leg Corp was founded in 2020 and has the mission to provide funds to help cover gaps in insurance for medical bills or the costs of prosthetic limbs for children. The organization has already provided a prosthetic hand for a York County child. Co-founder and board president Matthew Millhouse cofounded the organization with his lifelong friend Sean Laukhuff, board vice president, after Millhouse’s son Parker was born missing his right leg. The group was named Iron-Leg in honor of Parker. For more information, visit www.ironleg.org.

LSF Opens New Exhibit The Lancaster Science Factory (LSF) recently welcomed a new exhibit, Earthwalk Explorer. The exhibit will be on display through Memorial Day, Monday, May 22. This immersive experience allows visitors of all ages to kick off their shoes and walk onto a 3D map of the Eastern United States as projectors illuminate landmarks, cities, mountain ranges, and more. Special Geoshows also highlight the stories of indigenous people like the Lanape. Outside of the map, visitors can learn more about petroglyphs with hands-on activities. They can see a replica of the famous Jennings Rock, a petroglyph in the Delaware River. Earthwalk Explorer is included in general admission to the Lancaster Science Factory, which is located at 454 New Holland Ave., Lancaster.
